DOUGLASVILLE - Jerry Davis Dillard died Tuesday, June 8, 2004, following a brief illness. He was 53.

Survivors include his wife, Peggy Dillard, Douglasville; parents, C.L. and Marie Dillard, Stockbridge; brothers, Mark Dillard, McDonough, and Cecil Dillard, Stockbridge; area relatives, aunts, Janice Webb, Cornelia, Gail Brown, Toccoa; uncles, Curtis Alexander, Cleveland, and Kenneth Alexander, Cornelia.

Funeral services: 11 a.m. Saturday, June 12, at Vinings First Baptist Church. Dr. Ted Holley officiating. Burial following in Westview Cemetery.

Norma S. Edwards

Norma S. Edwards of Cleveland died Monday, Aug. 9, 2004, at the Northeast Georgia Medical Center Lanier Park Campus in Gainesville following an extended illness. She was 79.

Mrs. Edwards was born in Bridgeport, Conn., the daughter of the late Edward and Gunhill Spongeberg. She was preceded in death by her husband, George W. Edwards. She was a homemaker and retired real estate agent.

Survivors include her son, John G. Edwards, Cleveland; brother, Edward G. Spongeberg, California; and other relatives.

Mrs. Edwards was cremated, and no public services will be held.

Barrett Funeral Home, Cleveland, has charge of arrangements.

Charles Willie Edmondson

Charles Willie Edmondson of Cleveland died Friday, Aug. 6, 2004, at his residence following an extended illness. He was 59.

Mr. Edmondson was born in Lumpkin County and was a member of Cavenders Creek Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his father, C.W. Edmondson; daughter, Lisa Truelove; and son, Jeff Edmondson.

Survivors include his wife, Hazel Jean Edmondson, Cleveland; mother, Mae Abercrombie Edmonson, Clermont; son and daughter-in-law, Bobby and Mary Edmondson, Dahlonega; brother, Jimmy Edmondson, Clermont; sister and brother-in-law, Nellie and Tony Bracken, Cleveland; grandson, Colby Truelove, Alto; niece, Karen Lunsford, Cleveland; great-niece, Crystal Tench, Cleveland.

Funeral services were held Sunday in the chapel of Barrett Funeral Home. The Rev. Dean Bryant, the Rev. Ken Anderson and the Rev. Jim Gilstrap officiated. Burial was held Cavenders Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.

James William Taylor

HIAWASSEE - James William Taylor died Sunday, Aug. 8, 2004, following a period of declining health. He was 71.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Sue York.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth Taylor, Hiawassee; daughters, Connie Adams, Helen, and Vicki Jenkins, Young Harris; sons, Anthony Taylor and Bryant Taylor, both of Hiawassee; brothers, Bobby Taylor, Hiawassee, Jackie Taylor, Baldwin, and Jerel Taylor, Douglasville; sisters, Deana Fay Durham, Decatur, and Mattie Southland, Douglasville; seven grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services: 3 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 10, at Bell Scene Baptist Church with the Rev. Chris Anderson and the Rev. Tommy Jenkins officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

David Earl Williams

David Earl Williams of Sautee-Nacoochee died Friday, Aug. 6, 2004 at his residence following a brief illness. He was 55.

Born in Houston County on Aug. 17, 1948, he was the son of the late Thomas Newton and Elizabeth Beatrice Perdue Williams. He was the owner of Cleveland Heating & Air, a member of the Yonah Lodge No. 382 Free & Accepted Masons and a member of the Helen First Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his brother, Richard Williams.

Survivors include his son, Scott Williams, Cleveland; daughter, Tonya Dorsey, Cleveland; brothers, Bobby Williams, R.A. Williams, both of Perry, Fred Williams, Macon, Bo Williams, Warner Robins, James Williams, Fort Valley; sisters, Evelyn Rackley, Perry, Elizabeth Coldiron, Warner Robins, Susie Ann Williams, Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Jean Bass, Byron, Sarah Hunter, Bonaire, Karen Edwards, Flowery Branch; and grandchildren, Tyler Bennett and Samantha Williams.

Graveside services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 10, at the Bonaire Community Cemetery. The Rev. Doug Bennett officiating.

The family will receive friends from noon-2 p.m. Tuesday at Bonaire United Methodist Church in Bonaire.

Estelle Palmer Winkler

Estelle Palmer Winkler of Cleveland died Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2004, at Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville following an extended illness. She was 85.

Born in Union County on Jan. 28, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Luther and Rosie Gooch Palmer.

Mrs. Winkler was a homemaker and a member of Shoal Creek Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dan J. Ellis; former husband, Grady Winkler; and stepson, Douglas Grady Winkler.

Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Danny and Melinda Ellis, Richard and Mary Beth Ellis, all of Cleveland; daughter-in-law, Janie Ellis, Cleveland; grandchildren, Cindy Williams, Shane Ellis, Nikia Ellis, Rosie Ellis, Joseph Ellis, Shawn Ellis, Leah Ellis, all of Cleveland; great-grandchildren, Levi Williams, Ryan Williams, Chelsea Williams, Mason Ellis, Makayla Ellis, Madison Ellis, all of Cleveland; great-great-grandchild, Lance Tyler Brooks, Cleveland; and other relatives.

Funeral services were held Friday at Shoal Creek Baptist Church. The Rev. Chris Anderson, the Rev. Douglas Palmer and the Rev. Rainey Palmer officiated. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

George W. Williams

STOCKBRIDGE - Retired Master Sgt. George W. Williams died Sunday, Aug. 1, 2004. He was 69.

Born in Fulton County on March 30, 1935, he was the son of Cleo Grace Adams of Cleveland and the late William Elven Williams.

Mr. Williams was retired from the United States Marine Corps. He also retired from the Georgia State Farmers Market as a produce salesman.

Survivors, in addition to his mother, include his wife, Toshiko Williams; children, Warren Williams, Alto, Emiko Yonemori, Nina Williams, both of Stockbridge, Wade Williams, Cleveland; brother, Jerry Williams; sisters, Betty Patitt and Sue Turner, all of Stockbridge.

Funeral services: 3 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 4, in the chapel of Cannon-Cleveland Funeral Directors. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesday.

Toby Hestand III

CORNELIA - Toby Hestand III died Sunday, Aug. 1, 2004, at Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville from injuries he sustained in an automobile accident. He was 29.

Born in Phoenix on Oct. 9, 1974, he served in the U.S. Army and was a truck driver with APAC.

Survivors include his sons, Edgar Alex Boyles, Moonoville, Ala., and Dyvon Chandler Hestand, Cornelia; daughters, Danielle Samantha Hestand, Brynn Juliet Hestand, both of Gainesville; mother and stepfather, Susan and Robert Hesting, Alto; stepmothers, Janie Hestand, Douglas, Ariz., Debbie Van Dusen, Naples, Fla.; stepfather, Ralph Hesting, St. Petersburg, Fla.; sisters, Sabrina Hestand, Alto; Summer Hestand, Tuscon, Ariz.; Heather Hestand, Phoenix; brothers and sisters-in-law, Randy and Kathy Hesting, Barnesville, Jeremy and Jess Van Dusen, Cornelia; brothers, Matthew Hestand, Tuscon, Ariz.; Bradley Woodruff, Gainesville; fiancee, Kimberley Brookshire, Cornelia.

Linda Fortner

Linda Fortner of Cleveland died Saturday, July 31, 2004, at the Lanier Park Campus of Northeast Georgia Medical Center following an extended illness. She was 62.

Ms. Fortner was born in Stephens County and was preceded in death by her father, Leonard Fortner; sister, Beverly Fortner; and brother, Gary Fortner. She was a member of Blue Creek Baptist Church, Rainbow Girl of the Eastern Star, a graduate of North Habersham High School and Georgia Baptist Nursing School.

Ms. Fortner was a captain in the U.S. Air Force, a member of the Roy Head Post 16 of the American Legion and the Optimist Club of Cleveland.

Survivors include her mother, Dortha Stovall Fortner, Cleveland; uncles and aunts, Berman and Dolly Stovall, Ned and Beulah Satterfield, George and Judy Fortner, Tim and Edna Fortner, the Rev. Dave and Virginia Fortner, J.C. and Shirley Sutton, Johnny and Francis Sutton, all of Cleveland; many nieces, nephews and cousins; special family member, Jimmy Edmondson and family.

Funeral services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 3, at Blue Creek Baptist Church. The Rev. Darren Palmer, the Rev. Milton Harris and the Rev. Dave Fortner officiating. The body may be viewed at the church 1:30 until 2 p.m. Tuesday. Burial following in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends 2-5 and 7-9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Flowers are optional or contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

James Edward "Jim" Freeman

James Edward "Jim" Freeman of Cleveland died Thursday, July 29, 2004, at Gwinnett Medical Center in Lawrenceville following injuries sustained in an automobile accident. He was 37.

Mr. Freeman was born in LaGrange and was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Butler Freeman. He attended Shoal Creek Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Tania Freeman, Cleveland; son, Ryan Freeman, Cleveland; daughters, Alex Freeman, Chesnee Freeman, both of Cleveland; father, Sonny Freeman, LaGrange; sister, Amy Ward, LaGrange; brothers, Marc Freeman, LaGrange, Samuel Freeman, Tifton; several nieces and nephews and other relatives.

Funeral services: 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 1, at Shoal Creek Baptist Church. The Rev. Chris Anderson officiating. Burial following in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

George Thomas 'Tom' McGuire Sr.

George Thomas "Tom" McGuire Sr. of Cleveland, died Wednesday, July 28, 2004, at the New Horizons North Healthcare Center following an extended illness. He was 86.

Born in Fulton County on March 15, 1918, he was the son of the late Riley and Monteen Rictardson McGuire. Mr. McGuire served in the U.S. Army during World War II, was a retired auto mechanic, member of the Woodmen Of The World, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7720 and a member of Mt. View Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jane Alene Young.

Survivors include his son, George T. McGuire Jr., Cleveland; daughters and sons-in-law, Yvonne and Bill Rogers, Gainesville, Patricia and Rob Hartness, Blairsville; son and daughter-in-law, C.H. and Carrine Young, Blytheville, Ark.; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and special friends, the Myrtle West family.

Funeral services: 3 p.m. Friday, July 30, in the chapel of Barrett Funeral Home. The Rev. Dave Fortner and the Rev. Chris Anderson officiating. Burial following in Gateway Memory Park.

Mrs. Lovell was born in Union County, the daughter of Tommie and Willie Mae Franks Thomas of Cleveland. She attended Cleveland Congregational Holiness Church.

Survivors, in addition to her parents, include her husband, Gary Lovell; daughter and son-in-law, Melanie and Larry Partin; son, Chad Lovell; grandson, Josh Partin; sisters and brother-in-laws, Wanda and Charles Trotter, Vivian and Jerry Thomas, all of Cleveland; brother and sister-in-law, Danny and Debbie Thomas of Cornelia; brother, David Thomas of Cleveland; several nieces and nephews.

Amelia Ann (Midge) Cathey

Amelia Ann (Midge) Cathey of Cleveland died Sunday, July 25, 2004, at Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville following an extended illness. She was 59.

Mrs. Cathey was a native and lifetime resident of White County. She was retired from Regions Bank, where she worked for more than 30 years. A founder of the White County Relay for Life, she was a member of the Cleveland Optimist Club, a member of Mount Yonah Baptist Church and served White County in many different capacities.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Vanessa "Sissy" Palmer; mother, Francis Adams Allen; sister, Sally Chambers; and brother, Dale Allen.

Survivors include her husband, Glen Cathey; son, Edwin Frank Cathey; son and daughter-in-law, Joe and Lisa Cathey; father, William Allen; mother-in-law, Ethelene Hunter, all of Cleveland; grandchildren, Miranda Cathey, Lauren Cathey, Cierra Cathey and Joseph Cathey II; several aunts, uncles and other relatives.

Funeral services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 27, at Cleveland Church of God. The Rev. Chris Pierce, the Rev. Doug Merck and the Rev. Chris Anderson officiating. Burial following in the Mt. Yonah Baptist Church Cemetery.

Thomas Blaine Davis of Cleveland died Sunday, July 25, 2004, at his residence following a brief illness. He was 53.

Mr. Davis was a native and lifelong resident of White County. He attended Friendship Baptist Church. His was preceded in death by his father, Roy Nelson Davis.

Survivors include his daughter, Michelle Hayes; mother, Lurene Wheeler Davis; brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert and Darlene Davis, Burton and Bridget Davis, Boyd and Denise Davis, all of Cleveland, Barry and Diane Davis, Cornelia, Benny and Susan, Senaca, S.C., Bruce and Betty Davis, Cleveland; and grandchildren, Richard Hayes and Patrick Hayes.

Roy Davis of Cleveland died Thursday, July 22, 2004, at Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville following a brief illness. He was 70.

Mr. Davis was born in Gilmer County, the son of the late Elmer and Alice Totherow Davis. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Wayne Davis and Dwayne Davis, and sisters, Gaynell Hulsey and Floy Davis. Mr. Davis was a member of Fairview Baptist Church.

Survivors include his daughters, Robin Davis and Joan McClendon, both of Cleveland; son, William Elmer Davis, Cleveland; brother, Henry Davis, Orlando, Fla.; sisters, Trula Cantrell, Ellijay, Gladys Wheeler, Fay Payne, both of Cleveland; and three grandchildren.

Funeral services: 2 p.m. Saturday, July 24, in the Chapel of Barrett Funeral Home. The Rev. Allan Autry and the Rev. Donald Tritt officiating. Burial following in Sonlight Baptist Church Cemetery in Ellijay.
