Mrs. Mary B. Evans

THOMSON, Ga.- Mrs. Mary B. Evans, 71, widow of Mr. Gather Evans, of Shiloh Road, died Thursday, April 8, 2004, at her residence.
Funeral services were held Saturday, April 10, in the Curtis Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Kenneth Garvin officiating. Burial was in Sweetwater Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Evans was a native of Nashville, Tenn., but had lived in Thomson for many years. She was a homemaker and a member of Sweetwater Baptist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Mary Evans Wells and Eva Evans, both of Thomson; a son, Houston Evans, Harlem; two sisters, Vera Wright and Martha L. Brown, both of Nashville, Tenn.; a brother, Hershel Brewer, Franklin, Tenn.; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were David Sturkey, Adam Sturkey, Tim Brown, Andrew Kirkland, Jeremy Evans and Houston Evans.

Curtis Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Corrine F. Hunter
Retired Homemaker
WAYNESBORO, Ga.- Mrs. Corrine F. Hunter, 81, entered into rest Tuesday, April 6, 2004, at the Burke Medical Center.
She was a life long resident of Burke County. Mrs. Hunter was a retired homemaker and enjoyed rearing her children and grandchildren, gardening and sewing. She was a member of the Bethel Baptist Church.

Funeral services were held Friday, April 9, 2004, at the DeLoach-Kennedy Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Wayne Dixon officiating. Interment was in the Bethel Baptist Cemetery, Alexander, Ga.

Mrs. Hunter was preceded in death by husband, John Henry Hunter (1961) and son Paul Henry Hunter. Survivors include three daughters, Sarah Nell Hunter Fail, Hephzibah; Lynda Diane Hunter Gay, Waynesboro; Grace Hunter Johnikin, Thomson; four sons, William Herbert Hunter, Grovetown; Floyd Junior Hunter, Waynesboro; Charles Edward Hunter, Keysville; Grady Hunter, Augusta; 2 brothers, Willie and Billy Flakes of Waynesboro. Also survived by half-sister Doris Flakes, Waynesboro and 24 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Michael Hunter, Charles Hunter, Jr., Grady Hunter, Jr., William Gay Jr., Ernest Fail and Randy Johnikin.

DeLoach-Kennedy Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Gertrude C. Jones
THOMSON, Ga.- Funeral services for Mrs. Gertrude C. Jones, age 93, of Mimosa Street, Thomson, were held on Saturday, April 10, 2004 at the Mt. Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church, Thomson, Ga., Rev. Anthoni D. McElrath, Pastor, officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.
Survivors include her husband, Deacon George Jones, Thomson, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Thomson Funeral System was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. William F. Peel
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- Mr. William F. Peel, age 75, of Myrtle Beach, S.C., entered into rest on April 9, 2004 at Grandstand Regional Hospital in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, April 14, 2004, from the Chapel of Elliott Sons Funeral Home with Dr. Bobby E. Coleman officiating. Interment was in Westview Cemetery in Augusta with full military honors.

A native of Coffee County, Ga., Mr. Peel had resided in Augusta for over 30 years, but most recently had lived in Myrtle Beach, S.C. He was a retired Master Sergeant in the United States Army where he served 20 years. He was a Baptist.

Survivors include: A son, Daniel A. Peel, of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; three daughters, Janis Helper, of Dallas, Ga., Sherry Harrell, of Thomson, and Paula Williams, of Cary, N.C.; one brother, Finley Peel, of Clearwater, S.C.; one sister, Virginia Cooper, of Evans; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Mr. Ira C. Zakarian
CHICAGO, Ill.- Mr. Ira Charles "Zak" Zakarian, 79, beloved husband of Frances Willoughby Zakarian, died Thursday March 25, 2004, in St, James Hospital, Chicago, Ill.
Mr. Zakarian was born in Chicago, Ill. To Mary and Garabed Zakarian, who preceded him in death, He was brother to Agnes Yeransian and Sarkis Zakarian, who are deceased.

Zak was a World War II veteran of the United States Army Air Force, serving his Country from 1943 to 1946.

Following the completion of his military duties, Zak returned to Chicago and his job with the Federal Reserve Bank, where he was employed for more than 40 years.

Survivors include his wife of 43 years, several nieces and nephews, all of Chicago area and three sisters in laws, Annie Laurie Caldewell, Lexington, Ga., Mabel Lowe and Edna Stewart of Thomson.

Zak spent many vacations in the Camellia City, and made a host of friends, who are grieved by his passing. He will be fondly remembered.

Mrs. Gertrude Broxton Amos
HEPHZIBAH, Ga.- Mrs. Gertrude Broxton Amos, beloved wife of the late Benjamin Francis Amos, entered into rest Monday, March 29, 2004 at her residence.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 31, 2004 at Bath Pentecostal Holiness Church in Bath, S.C., with Rev. Bill Branch officiating. Interment was in Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Survivors include her son, Benjamin F. Amos, Jr., Waynesboro; daughters, Deborah Raborn, Vidette, Ga., Connie Eubanks, Waynesboro, Tammy Amos, Augusta, and Alice Ware, North Augusta; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; two brothers, Louie Broxton, Alpharetta, Ga., and James Broxton, Dearing; three sisters, Donna Nagy, Bath, Corine Glinski, Aiken, S.C., and Annie Mae Cooper, Aiken, S.C.

Her husband, Benjamin Amos, precedes her in death.

Pallbearers were her grandchildren and relatives.

THOMSON, Ga.- Funeral services for Deacon Harry Benefield, 106, who died Sunday, March 28, 2004 were held held Friday, April 2, 2004 at Waysgrove Baptist Church, Stellaville, Ga. Rev. Jimmy McCullough officiating. Burial was in the Flat Rock Baptist Church Cemetery.
Thomson Funeral System was in charge of arrangements.

Ms. Etheleene Bolton
WARRENTON, Ga.- Funeral services for Ms. Etheleene Bolton, 63, of Pine St., Warrenton, were held on Saturday, April 3, 2004 at 1 p.m. at the Sardis Baptist Church, Sharon, Ga., Rev. W. R. Ferrell, Pastor, officiating. Interment was in church cemetery.
Survivors, one son, Eddie B. Cooper, Atlanta; three sisters, Nonie M. Ivey, Thomson, Carrie Costin, Lithonia and Mary M. Bolton of Hartford, Ct., other relatives and friends.

Thomson Funeral System was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Nellie Braswell

BONEVILLE, Ga.- Mrs. Nellie Braswell, 71, widow of Mr. Gordon Braswell, died Sunday, March 28, 2004, in the Warrenton Rehabilitation Center.
Graveside services were held Tuesday, March 30, in the Savannah Valley Memorial Gardens with Rev. Tim Ferrell officiating.

Mrs. Braswell was a native of Richmond County, but had lived in Warrenton for several years. She was a homemaker and was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include a niece, Debra Hester, Boneville; two brothers, Ralph Johnson and Clouse Johnson, both of Augusta; a sister, Betty Ansley, Boneville; two great-nieces, Samantha Vines, Dearing, Mitzi Kinnamon, Boneville; four great-nephews, Joseph Vines, Dearing, Tommy Holland, Kenny Holland, and Gene Holland, all of Harlem.

Curtis Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Mary Borders Crain
Retired Paralegal Secretary
THOMSON, Ga.- Mrs. Mary Borders Crain, 81, widow of Mr. Lewis Crain, died Thursday, April 1, 2004, in the McDuffie Regional Medical Center. Graveside services were held Sunday, April 4, 2004, in the Savannah Valley Memorial Gardens with Rev. Albert Huyck officiating.
Mrs. Crain was a native of Hancock County and attended schools in Hancock and Warren Counties. She graduated from Warren County High School and attended Tift College, Georgia Southern, and graduated from Athens Business College and Atlanta Law School. She retired from the Norfolk-Southern Railway in June of 1987.

She was preceded in death by E. Paul Borders and C. Reid Borders.

She is survived by Neil Crain, Taylors, S.C., James Borders, Lakemont, Ga., John Borders, Warrenton, Jack B. Borders, Louisville, Ethel B. Harris, Washington, Ga., Lucy B. McCorkle, Thomson and several nieces and nephews.

Curtis Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. W. Albert Land
THOMSON, Ga.- Mr. W. Albert Land, 71, beloved husband of Mrs. Mary Land of Morris Road, Thomson, died Thursday, April 1, 2004, in the McDuffie Regional Medical Center.
Funeral services were held Sunday, April 4, 2004, in Sweetwater Baptist Church with Rev. Kenneth Garvin, Rev. J.B. Redd and Mr. W.B. Cooper officiating. Burial was in Savannah Valley Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Land was a native of Glascock County, but had lived in Thomson for many years. He was retired from the Southern Roadbuilders Division of Apac of Georgia. He was a member of the Little River Cattlemen's Association. He was a member of Sweetwater Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by a son, Stan Land and his grandson, Adam McCorkle.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Land, Thomson; his daughter and son-in-law, Cindy and Rick McCorkle; his son and daughter-in-law, Tony and Lea Land, Ashburn; a sister, Judy Land McCreary, Lantana, Fla.; three brothers, Bobby Land, William Land, and Hubert Land, all of Thomson and four grandchildren, Dusty Land, Jo Jo Land, Kaycee Land, and Aaron McCorkle.

Pallbearers were Jarred Land, Parker Land, Keith Land, Hollis Land, Dennis Allen, Tony Stevenson, Pete Bales and Roger Burton. Honorary pallbearers will be workers at Southern Roadbuilders.

Curtis Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Barbara Burch Statham
Teacher
AUGUSTA, Ga. - Mrs. Barbara Burch Statham of Martinez died peacefully at home on Saturday, March 27, 2004 following a brief illness.
She was the devoted wife of Norman G. Statham for 53 years. Mrs. Statham, the daughter of the late John B. Burch and Louise L. Burch, was a native of Thomson.

She graduated from Thomson High School and received a Bachelor of Science degree from Georgia College and State University. After doing graduate work in the university system of California, she taught in the public schools of that state for a number of years. She ended her teaching career as an instructor of modern dance at Fairliegh-Dickenson College in New Jersey.

Having lived in various cities throughout the United States, Mrs. Statham moved to Martinez in 1980 when her husband retired. She was a member of West Lake Garden Club and the West Lake Lady Lakers and active in those organizations.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her sister, Jane Hawes of Augusta and her brother-in-law, Gordon Statham of Atlanta; her nieces, Christy Brown and her husband Tom of Thomson and Cindy Boyer and her husband Kirk of Spring Hill, Tenn., and her nephews, Rick Hawes and his wife Karen of Thomson and Ward Statham of Ellijay.

Memorial services were held Tuesday, March 30, 2004 at 2 p.m. in the Chapel of Thomas Poteet and Son with Rev. Brian Davis officiating.

Thomas Poteet & Son Funeral Directors was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Jerry Don Jones
Army retiree
THOMSON, Ga.- Entered into rest Tuesday, March 30, 2004, at McDuffie Regional Medical Center, Mr. Jerry Don Jones, 55, of Thomson.
Funeral services were held Friday, April 2, 2004, at Beaufort National Cemetery, Beaufort, S.C., with full military honors.

Mr. Jones, a native of Cherry Point, N.C., was retired from the U.S. Army.

Survivors include one son, Scott Jones, Appling; one daughter, Kim Jones, Evans; his mother, Sarah Elizabeth Jones, Beaufort; one brother, Rusty Jones, Beaufort; two sisters, Sharon LeGare and Kathy Dixon, both of Beaufort and three grandchildren.

Starling Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
