James William Hardin

Mr. James William Hardin, age 90, of Locust Grove, Georgia died July 7, 2008. Mr. Hardin was born in Locust Grove, the son of the late Annie Mathis Peeples and James Ira Hardin. He served his country in the Army-Air Force during WWII as an aircraft mechanic and returning to Ft. Gillem worked as an electrical mechanic. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Locust Grove. Mr. Hardin enjoyed his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren and gardening.

Survivors include his wife, Hazel Henderson Hardin of Locust Grove; sons, Kim, Mal and Bill Hardin all of Locust Grove; grandchildren, Kelly Dennis of Jersey, Luke Hardin and John Hardin of Locust Grove, Joe Hardin of Jackson, and Paul Hardin of Utah; Great grandchildren, Erin, Rebecca, Carson and Rhett; sister, Annie Jim (Bill) Copeland of Valley, Alabama; brother, Sage (Jesse) Hardin of Morrow; several nieces and nephews.

Services were held July 9 at the Locust Grove Cemetery with Pastor Dave Riley officiating. In lieu of flowers those who wish may make donations to Sacred Journey Hospice, 138 Peach Dr., McDonough, Georgia 30253. Haisten Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Rex C. Jones

Mr. Rex C. Jones, age 67, of McDonough, Georgia died June 24, 2008. He was born in Florida to the late Henry Carlton and Merle LeJune Thompson Jones. Rex was a member of the McDonough First United Methodist Church and retired in 1996 from the DeKalb School System. He volunteered with Skills USA on the Georgia and National levels, was an avid golfer; and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Ann Jones of McDonough; daughter, Kay (Mitchell) Hill of LaGrange; grandchildren, Avery and Kaitlyn Hill; brother, Billy (Diane) Jones of Dixonville, Florida.

Services were held June 27, from the Chapel of Haisten Funeral Home with Rev. Dana Everhart and Rev. John Jackson officiating. Interment Haisten at Eastlawn Memorial Park. Please make contributions to the McDonough First United Methodist Church Building Fund, 151 Macon Street, McDonough, Georgia 30253 or Vitas Hospice, 931 Rock Quarry Road, Stockbridge, Georgia 30281 in memory of Mr. Jones. Haisten Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Mary Lois Branch McSwain

Mrs. Mary Lois Branch McSwain, age 69, of Mc-Donough, Georgia died June 24, 2008. She was born in Castleberry, Alabama to the late Rev. James D. and Hazel Palmer Branch. She retired from the Birmingham Board of Education, Bank of America, and Wachovia Bank and was a member of the Golden Springs Baptist Church in Anniston, AL. She was preceded in death by a brother, Frederick Branch.

Survivors include her husband of 51 years, James Thurlon McSwain of McDonough; sons, Michael (Elizabeth) McSwain of Lakeland, Florida, Tony (Nana) McSwain of McDonough; grandchildren, Lindsey, Jenifer, Sean, and Tiffany; siblings, Mattie (Luther) Draughon of Wicks-burg, Alabama, Eddie (Annice) Branch of Semmes, Alabama, Virginia Hammack of Slocomb, Alabama, Cecil Branch of Taylor, Alabama; several nieces and nephews.

Services were held June 28, from the Chapel of Haisten Funeral Home with Brother Tom Miller officiating. Interment Haisten at Eastlawn Memorial Park. Contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society in memory of Mrs. McSwain. Haisten Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Dorothy Elizabeth Smith Allen

Dorothy Elizabeth Smith Allen of McDonough died June 26, 2008. She was born in Atlanta, Georgia to the late James Clifford Smith and Annie Mae Wingate Smith and the step-daughter of the late Minnie Tinsley Smith.

Dot graduated from Commercial High School. At the age of 16, she started the Zoraka Club. The group of 12 girlfriends met monthly for over 60 years. After graduation, Dot worked for Southern Railway until her marriage to Robert Stuart Allen on September 22, 1940 at Epworth Methodist Church. They began their married life in Tampa, Florida, later transferring to Charleston, South Carolina and eventually back to the Atlanta area.

For over 50 years, Dot was very active in the Hapeville United Methodist Church, especially WSCS, now United Methodist Women, the HUMS singing group, and the Jere Wells Class. She was a member of the Hapeville Book Club, Atlanta History Center, Hapeville Service Leagues, Hapeville Historical Society, the Alfred Holt Colquitt Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, later transferring to the McDonough UDC #2411, a volunteer at the voting polls in Hapeville, active PTA member for 25 years, and numerous bridge clubs. After moving to McDonough in 1996, she became a member of McDonough First United Methodist Church and the Ada Bertha Bunn Circle.

Dot was a true southern lady who loved life, friends, and family. She was a devoted, loving, and fun wife, mother, and grandmother. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren brought her much joy. She was always ready for a card game, an outing, or a musical show. Dot made every holiday a special occasion with her flair for decorating and entertaining. Being a native of Atlanta, Dot had great memories and stories of the old Atlanta train terminal where her father worked, climbing Stone Mountain, graduating from high school in the Fox Theater, trips to the Varsity, and growing up in Little Five Points. She had a love of music and always a song in her heart.

Survivors include her husband, Robert, and three daughters, Priscilla Smith (Bill), Phyllis Taylor (the late Dan Taylor), Dottie Green (Michael); six grandchildren, Dan Taylor, Michael Taylor (Silvia), Stephanie Gauthier (Bobby), Abigail Smith, Sarah Russell (Billy), and Emily Green; five great grandchildren, Madison and Matthew Taylor, Hannah Russell, Robert and Millie Gauthier; sisters, Julia Morris and Betty Spencer; niece, Julie Boone; and life-long Zoraka friends, Ray Barfield, Louise Mitchell, Doris Tatum, Muriel King, and Jean Jones.

Services were held June 30 at McDonough First United Methodist Church with Rev. Mack Riley and Mike Broome officiating. Interment Westview Cemetery. Donations may be made to the Alzheimer Association, Hapeville United Methodist Church, First United Methodist of McDonough, or Sacred Journey Hospice of McDonough. Cannon Cleveland Funeral Directors in charge of arrangements.

William Fred Whitaker

Mr. William Fred Whitaker, age 84, of McDonough, Georgia died June 29, 2008. Mr. Whitaker was born in Fayette County, the son of the late Clara Jane Jones and William Fred Whitaker, Sr. He served his country in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1946 receiving the Meritorious Unit Award, WWII Victory Medal and Asiatic Pacific Service Medal. He retired from Western Electric/AT&T. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Hapeville. Mr. Whitaker was a loving husband, father and grandfather who enjoyed camping, fishing, and the Braves. He was preceded in death by a brother, Franklin Whitaker.

Survivors include his wife, Helen Whitaker of McDonough; daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Benny Sturm of Sharpsburg; grandsons, Todd Sturm of Atlanta and Brent Sturm of Senoia; brothers, Maurice Whitaker of Charlotte, North Carolina, Robert Whitaker of Austell and Walter Whitaker of Euless, Texas; several nieces and nephews.

Services were held July 2 in the chapel of Haisten Funeral Home with Pastor David Ricks officiating. Interment College Park Cemetery. Haisten Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Vera Mae Rodes Haynes

Mrs. Vera Mae Rodes Haynes, age 98, of McDonough, Georgia, died June 29, 2008. Mrs. Haynes was born in Raleigh County, West Virginia, the daughter of the late Alice DeQuasie and David Lee Rodes. Mrs. Haynes retired with Appalachian Power Comp-any with 40 years of service. She was a dedicated member of Flippen United Methodist Church until moving into assisted living. Mrs. Haynes was preceded in death by her husband, William D. Haynes, her parents and siblings.

Survivors include her sister-in-law, Agnes Haynes of Rainelle, West Virginia; nieces, nephews, church family and friends.

Services will be held Saturday, July 5 at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of Haisten Funeral Home with Rev. Tim Emmett officiating. Interment Haisten at Eastlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service. For those who wish in lieu of flowers donations may be made to Flippen United Methodist Church Building Fund, 3707 Jodeco Rd. McDonough, GA 30253 Haisten Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Jackie Maloy McCormick

Mrs. Jackie Maloy McCor-mick, age 72, of McDonough, Georgia died June 7, 2008. She was born in Henry County, the daughter of the late Mary Ruth and Thomas Daniel Maloy. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and dear friend who enjoyed gardening and especially raising tomatoes, cooking and watching cooking shows. Mrs. McCormick was preceded in death by husband, Carl James Schaneman and several siblings.

Survivors include her children, Tonia and Mike Cline of McDonough, Carl Schaneman of Zebulon, Chris Schaneman of Rex and Caroline Schaneman of Kennesaw; nine grandchildren, three great grandchildren; brother, T. D. Maloy; numerous nieces and nephews.

Services were held June 11 in the chapel of Haisten Funeral Home with Rev. Alvie Rodgers officiating. Haisten Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
