Mr. James C. Utley

WRENS, Ga. - Funeral services for Mr. James C. Utley, 76, were held on Tuesday, April 1, 2008, at 1 p.m. at The House of God Church of God In Christ, Thomson, with the Bishop Mark Walden, Pastor, Officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.

Survivors are a devoted wife of 40 years, Mildred V. Utley, Wrens; son, Jerry Bradley, Brooklyn, N.Y.; sister, Helen Francois, Brooklyn; brother, Alonza Utley, Brooklyn and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, brothers and sisters-in law and other relatives and friends.

Mrs. Sarah Mae Collins

GROVETOWN, Ga. - Mrs. Sarah Mae Collins, 86, died Tuesday, January 29, 2008, at The Place at Augusta.

The funeral was held Friday, February 8, 2008, at 2:30 p.m. at New Appling Grove Baptist Church, with the Rev. James D. R. Avery officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Collins, a native of Columbia County, was sweet, loving and kind to all she knew. For many years, she was a member of New Appling Grove Baptist Church. She also attended Whole Life Ministries in Augusta faithfully.

Survivors are three daughters, Martha Ann Wideman, Grovetown, Brenda (Grayland) Joyner and Alleene Collins, all of Miami; two sons, Glen Collins and Randolph Collins, both of Harlem; one sister, Ethel Maude Green, Appling; one daughter-in-law, Sherri C. Collins, Harlem; a devoted adopted granddaughter, Durlyne Jones, Harlem; seven grandchildren, Tammie Griffin, Carl Gaston, Larry Gaston, Brandon Collins, Deangelo Coleman, Starmeika Gamble, Demonta Coleman; twenty-one great-grandchildren; and one great-great- grandchild.

Thomson Funeral System was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Lula Bell Jackson Mackey

THOMSON, Ga. - Funeral service for Mrs. Lula Bell Jackson Mackey, 77, of Thomson was held on Friday, December 28, 2007, at 1 p.m. at the Mt. Aldred C.M.E. Church, Warren County, with the Rev. J. H. Bush officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include one daughter, Minnie L. Jackson, Thomson; one son, Willie L. Jackson, Decatur; one brother, John (Nancy) Jackson, Thomson; three granddaughters, Sonya (Phillip) Williams, Thomson, Ta'Poris Jackson, Atlanta and Mykiah, Atlanta; three grandsons, Pedrick, Augusta, Shawn Jackson, Stone Mountain and Dwight Jackson, Buffalo, NY; a devoted great-grandson, Jerrell McNair, Thomson; two great-granddaughters, Shantell McNair and Pedricka Murray, both of Thomson; two great-grandsons, Phillip Williams and Donovan Williams, both of Thomson; two sisters-in-law; two aunts; one uncle; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Mr. Fred Ansley
THOMSON, Ga. - Mr. Fred Ansley, 77, died Wednesday, January 30, 2008, at his residence.

Memorial services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, February 2, 2008, in the Curtis Funeral Home Chapel with family officiating.

Mr. Ansley was a native of McDuffie County. He was retired from the National Guard, National Homes and Inglett Co. He was a Baptist by faith.

Survivors include his wife, Helen Ansley, Thomson; a daughter, Beth Ansley, Thomson; three sons, Steve Ansley, Thomson, Robbie Ansley, Dearing, Galen Ansley, Grovetown; a sister, Mildred Kent, Harlem; three brothers, Billy Ansley, Thomson, Bobby Ansley, Washington, Ronnie Ansley, Appling; seven grandchildren and three step-children.

Curtis Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. W.L. Turner
Retired Deputy Sheriff
DEARING, Ga. - Mr. W.L. Turner, 82, beloved husband of Mrs. Nancy Turner, died Sunday, December 30, at his residence.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Thursday, January 3, in the Curtis Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Eddie Renew officiating. Burial was in the Savannah Valley Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Turner was a native of Wilkes County, but had lived in Dearing many years. He was a retired Deputy Sheriff with McDuffie County. He was a World War II veteran and a member of Dearing Full Gospel Church.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Nancy Turner, Dearing; his two daughters, Catherine Alberson, Lexington S.C. and Brenda Tucker, Lake Sinclair, Ga.; a step-son, Ray Smith, Cope, S.C.; a sister, Mrs. Betty Martin, Conyers, Ga.; seven grandchildren and several great- grandchildren.

Pallbearers were McDuffie County Sheriff Deputies.

Curtis Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Charles "C.J." Joyner

DEARING, Ga. - Mr. Charles "C.J." Joyner, 69, husband of Mrs. Mary "Shara" Joyner, entered into rest March 7, 2008 at his residence.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 10, 2008, at 1 p.m. in the Thomas L. King Funeral Home Chapel with Fire Dept. Chaplain Capt. Tommy Cox officiating. Interment was at Bellevue Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Joyner was born in Augusta and was a former firefighter with the Augusta/Richmond County Fire Dept.

Survivors include wife, Mrs. Mary "Shara" Joyner, Dearing; three daughters, Deborah Jean Rowland, Augusta, Donna Lynn Moore, Hephzibah, and Lekeshia Shea Menendez, Dearing; three brothers, Bobby Joyner, Augusta, Moe Joyner, Augusta, and Ronnie Joyner, Belvedere, S.C.; grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Sam Partan, Harmon Brown, Tommy Pritchet, Herbert Terry, and Ricky Dudai. Honorary Pallbearers were members and retired firefighters with the Augusta/Richmond County Fire Deptartment.

Mrs. Frances Richards Jordan

NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. - Funeral services for Mrs. Frances Richards Jordan, 74, who entered into rest April 17, 2008, were conducted Monday at 11 a.m. from the Posey Funeral Chapel. Rev. Jimmy Coyle officiated. Entombment was in Pineview Memorial Park.

Mrs. Jordan was a native to Thomson, having made North Augusta her home for the past 51 years. She was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church, the Ruth Sunday School Class and 1950 graduate of Thomson High School. A loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother, Mrs. Jordan was the daughter of the late Gibson and Ruby Rabun Richards.

Survivors include her husband of 56 years, Joseph K. Jordan, Sr.; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Kelly & Penny Jordan and Richard Jordan, all of North Augusta; a daughter and son-in-law, Kathy & Vince Pedraza, Wilmington, NC; a sister, Camilla Benson, Greer, SC; two brothers, Jack Richards, North Augusta and Kent Richards, Thomson; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Honorary pallbearers were Robin Palmer, Jeff Spradley, Bill McCollum, Lowell Brown, James Skidmore and Raymond Deal. Active pallbearers were Robbie Jordan, Tim Hall, Steve Smith, Jack Jordan, Mike Potenski and Jimmy Chadwick.

Memorials may be made to the Immanuel Baptist Church, 615 Old Edgefield Road, North Augusta, SC.

Ms. Sarah Printup Smith

GREENSBORO, Ga. - Ms. Sarah Printup Smith, age 95, of Greensboro, died Tuesday, February 5, 2008, at Willow Run Retirement Home.

Born on April 3, 1912, in McDuffie County, she was the daughter of the late Billy Reuben Printup and Elizabeth Nichols Printup. She was procurement secretary for the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur D. Smith; her first husband Julian W. Phillips, Sr.; son, Michael Phillips; and siblings, Robert Printup, Mozelle Printup and Margaret Adams.

She is survived by daughters, Michaelle "Mickey" Skinner and husband, Donald, of the Liberty Community, and Martha Ann Whitaker and husband, Carlton E., of Appling; a son, Julian W. Phillips of El Cajon, Calif.; nine grandchildren, Mike Phillips, Rob Phillips, Carla Cato, Mark Whitaker, Lynn Facey, Alex Sanders, Pete Phillips, Scott Phillips and Buddy Phillips; nine great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; and a number of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, February 7, 2008, at 10 a.m. at Liberty United Methodist Church in White Plains, Ga., with Rev. Edward A. Swehla officiating. Interment followed at Dearing City Cemetery in Dearing at noon.

Serving as pallbearers were Stewart Lord, Ryan Cato, Jordan Whitaker, Mark Whitaker, Alex Sanders and Gary Cato.

The family requests that any memorials be made to Liberty United Methodist Church Building Fund, c/o Ann Smith, 2491 Shiloh Road, Greensboro, GA 30642.

Mr. John Willingham
"Bar-B-Que Man"
APPLING, Ga. - Mr. John "Bar-B-Que Man" Willingham, 88, of Appling, died February 5, 2008, at University Hospital.

Master Sgt. Willingham was a WWII Army Veteran and retired from the Milliken Co., in Thomson.

Services were held Saturday, February 16, 2008, at 1 p.m. at First Mt. Carmel Baptist Church in Appling, with Rev. Roscoe Perry officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Shirley J. Brenneman

THOMSON, Ga. - Mrs. Shirley J. Brenneman, 55, loving wife of 36 years of Mr. Dale Brenneman, entered into rest on Sunday, February 10, 2008, at her residence.

Memorial services were held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, February 12, 2008, at Starling Funeral Home in Harlem.

Mrs. Brenneman was born in Andalusia, Ala., to the late Johnnie and Annie Odom and was a Quality Assurance Technician. She was a loving wife, mother, and nanny and will be greatly missed by family and friends.

Additional survivors include one son, Shad (Mary) Brenneman, Thomson; one daughter, Shelia (Philip) Becht, Charlotte, N.C.; three brothers, George A. (Virginia) Odom, Pearson, Ralph R. (Judy) Odom, Lakeland, and Johnny W. (Pam) Odom, Douglas; one sister, Betty (Ben) Nobles, Pearson; and seven grandchildren, Austin, Alexis and Levi Becht, Charlotte, N.C., Bridget and Lea Brenneman, Savannah and Amber Husk, of Thomson; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Charlotte A. Fender; brother, Jimmie C. Odom; and nephew, Vernon B. Odom.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 2607 Commons Blvd., Augusta, GA 30909.

GROVETOWN, Ga. -Mr. David Hall, 51, entered into rest on Sunday, March 30, 2008, at Heartland Hospice in Augusta.

A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 5, 2008, at the residence.

Mr. Hall was born in McDuffie County to the late Leondus and Sarah Hall. He was a self-employed drywall hanger and finisher and loved fishing.

Survivors include his life-long companion, Mary Lee Taylor; one daughter, Kimberly Hall, Grovetown; four brothers, Joe Hall, Wrens, Louis Washington, Harlem, Charles Hall, Dearing, and Johnny Hall, Mississippi; two step-children, Joey Taylor and Michelle Oswald, of Alabama; four grandchildren, Sam Hall, Sarah Hall, Emily Oswald and Dylan Oswald.

Starling Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Johnny West, Jr.

APPLING, Ga. - Funeral services for Mr. Johnny West, Jr., 70, Appling, were held on Thursday, January 31, 2008, at 2 p.m. at the New Appling Grove Baptist Church in Appling with the Rev. James Avery officiating. Interment was in the churchyard cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Bernice R. West, Thomson; two stepdaughters, Agnes (Billy) Jones, Brooklyn, N.Y. and Diane (George) Brown, Thomson; one stepson, Flim Ramsey, Thomson; three sisters, devoted sister, Lillie B. West, Appling, Carolyn West, Appling and Rosia L. (Luther) Jones, Augusta; four brothers, John W. West, David West, Albert B. (Bessie) West and Sam West, Jr., all of Appling; one uncle, Johnnie T. West; one aunt, Willie M. Lampkin; one brother- in-law, William C. Jones, Sr.; 11 grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

THOMSON, Ga. - Funeral service for Deacon Eddie Lewis Collins, 68, of Thomson was held on Monday, March 10, 2008 at 1 p.m. at the William Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Frederick D. Favors presiding, and the Rev. Golden Lott serving as eulogist. Interment was in the churchyard cemetery.

Survivors: a wife, Verannette Collins, Thomson; three sons, Jimmy Collins, Austin, Texas, Eddie Lewis, Atlanta and Johnathan Carlton, Thomson; four daughters, Janice (Sterling) Walker, Kathleen (Tony) Boyer, Michelle Collins and Pamela Grant, all of Thomson; two brothers, Robert (Wilma) Collins and Willie B. Collins, all of Thomson; three sisters, Geneva Clay, Louise (Johnny) Murray and Wyvonia Collins, all of Thomson; 16 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three brothers-in-law; eight sisters-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and sorrowing friends.
