Mrs. Norma M. Paul

THOMSON, Ga. - Mrs. Norma M. Paul, 86, widow of Mr. Gibson Paul, Sr., died Wednesday, March 19, 2008, in the McDuffie Regional Medical Center. Graveside services were at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 22, in the Sweetwater Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Kenneth Garvin officiating.

Mrs. Paul was a native of McDuffie County. She was a homemaker and a member of Sweetwater Baptist Church.

Survivors include her son, Grover G. Paul, Jr., Thomson; a grandson, Dr. Travis Paul, Daphne, Al; and two granddaughters, Maggie Paul and Madeline Paul, both of Daphne, Al.

Mrs. Helen H. Driggers

THOMSON, Ga. - Mrs. Helen H. Driggers, 89, widow of Mr. William Herbert Driggers, died Friday, February 8, 2008, at the McDuffie Regional Medical Center.

Memorial services were held at 2 p.m., Sunday, February 17, 2008, at Dearing United Methodist Church with Rev. Allen Hamilton officiating.

Mrs. Driggers was a native of McDuffie County. She was retired civilian personnel at Fort Gordon. She was a member of Dearing United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. Ocran Howard and Mrs. Essie Wiley Howard.

She is survived by her son, Herbert H. Driggers, cousins, Bill and Vickie Howard, and many loving friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made to the Thomson McDuffie Relay for Life or the Dearing United Methodist Church.

Mr. Stan F. Morris

THOMSON, Ga. - Mr. Stan F. Morris, 27, died Sunday, January 27, 2008, at his residence.

Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 30, in the Curtis Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Ronnie Shelton officiating. Burial was in the Morris Family Cemetery.

Mr. Morris was a native of McDuffie County. He was a construction worker with Wiley Brothers. He was a member of Faith Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his mother, Mrs. Sandra Morris.

He is survived by his father, Mr. Stanton Morris, Thomson; a brother, Timmy (Judy) Usry, Wrens; a niece, Nicole Usry, North Folk, Va.; two nephews, Blake Usry, Jessie Usry, both of Thomson; two aunts, Jewell Phillips, Thomson, Bobbie Scott, Hephzibah.

Pallbearers were Blake Usry, Jessie Usry, Ricky Phillips, CJ Brown, Jut Hughes, Howard Lazenby, John Kitchens, Kevin Taylor, Brandon Story, Sam Christian.

Curtis Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. William "Bill" Kemp, Jr.

GIBSON, GA - Mr. William "Bill" Kemp, Jr., 48 of Gibson, entered into rest March 14, 2008.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, March 19, 2008 at the Beggs Funeral Home Chapel with Revs. Thomas Ghann and Wayne Ghann officiating. Interment followed in Faith Memorial Gardens in Madison.

Pallbearers were the Glascock County High School Coaches. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Glascock County High School football team.

Mr. Kemp was born in Kingsville, Tex., but lived in Glascock County for the past 25 years. He was a 1977 graduate of Southeast Bullock High School, former Glascock County Recreation Dept. Coach and was a Glascock County High School Assistant Football Coach. Mr. Kemp was a former Cub Scout Leader and a member of Faith Baptist Church in Madison.

Survivors include his wife: Angie Sturdivant Kemp - Gibson; two sons: William F. Kemp, III - Lakewood, NJ., and Andrew Chandler Kemp - Gibson; father: William F. Kemp, Sr. - Portal, Ga.; mother: Anne H. Kemp - Portal, Ga.; brothers: Bob Kemp (Sheila) - Portal, Ga., and SSGT Jeffrey T. Kemp (Tammy) - Ft. Riley, Kansas; sister- Ginny Kemp - Beaufort, SC; paternal grandmother: Anne Lee Kemp - Jacksonville, Fla.; sister-in-law: Gail Norris (Eugene) - Warrenton; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to the Bill Kemp Memorial Fund c/o Habersham Bank 189 Legion Dr. Warrenton, GA 30828

Mrs. Helen Welch Phillips
Retired Civil Service
DEARING, Ga. - Mrs. Helen Welch Phillips, 74, of Dearing, entered into rest January 25, 2008, at the University Hospital. She was the beloved wife of the late Howard Phillips.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, January 30, 2008, at 2 p.m. at the Beggs Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Mike Timmerman officiating.

Pallbearers were Kenneth Welch, Sonny Welch, Jeff Welch, Jimmy Hunt, Billy Neal, Billy Neal, Jr.

Mrs. Phillips was a lifelong resident of McDuffie County and was the daughter of the late Jim Earl Welch and the late Elizabeth Inglett Welch. She was retired as a clerical worker from Signal Towers at Fort Gordon with over 30 years of service. Mrs. Phillips also worked at Wal-Mart in Thomson for nine years as a door greeter. She was a member of Dearing Baptist Church.

Survivors: son, Dennis Phillips (Charlon), Dearing; daughter, Debra Phillips, Belfast, Ireland; sister, Shirley Carithers, Dearing; two grandchildren, Britney Holt and Taylor Phillips.

Mr. Percy E. Hammock

THOMSON, Ga. - Mr. Percy E. Hammock, 92, beloved husband of Mrs. Mabel Norris Hammock, died Wednesday, January 2, 2008, in the Cumming Nursing Home in Cumming, Ga.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, January 4, in the Curtis Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Jim Ramsey officiating. Burial was in the Savannah Valley Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Hammock was a native of McDuffie County. He was a decorated Veteran member of the 69th Fighter Squadron, U.S. Army Air Corps during W.W. II. He was a member of the Thomson First Baptist Church, where he was a member of the Men's Bible Class. He had retired from the Warner Robins Air Force Base.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mabel Norris Hammock and was preceded in death by his first wife, Margaret Appling. Additional survivors include a sister-in-law, Mrs. Alice Hammock; and several stepchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Donations may be made to the Thomson First Baptist Church Capital Campaign.

Mrs. Sara Reville Grider
Retired US Postal Service
HARLEM, Ga. - Mrs. Sara Reville Grider, 77, wife of Mr. Gene Grider, entered into rest on Monday, March 3, 2008, at her residence.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 6, 2008, at Old Union Baptist Church. Interment was in the Harlem Memorial Cemetery.

Mrs. Grider was born in Harlem to the late Jesse and Myrtice Reville. She was a 1947 graduate of Harlem High School. After 26 years of service with the U.S. Postal Service, "Miss Sara" retired in 1989 with 21 years as the Postmaster of the Harlem Post Office. She was a member of Old Union Baptist Church where she served on the finance team. Mrs. Grider was a Sunshine Girl with the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association Chapter 1634 in Thomson.

In addition to her husband, survivors include one son Galen E. Grider (Shelley), Greenville, Ala.; two daughters, Sheila G. Wahman (Chris), Evans, and Joletta G. Cason (John, Jr.), Appling; and one sister Mary Lois Burroughs, Harlem. She was affectionately known as 'NaNaw' to her nine grandchildren Kristina Cason, Anna Cason, Zachary Grider, Amelia Grider, Trey Hobbs, Alexandr Wahman, Joseph Wahman, Michael Wahman and Sarah Wahman.

If so desired, memorials may be made to the Ministry of Old Union Baptist Church, 6095 Old Union Road, Harlem, GA 30814, American Heart Association, PO Box 409410, Atlanta, GA 30384, or American Cancer Society, 2607 Commons Blvd. Augusta, GA 30909.

Mrs. Helen Brooks

THOMSON, Ga. - Mrs. Helen Brooks, 94, widow of Mr. Julian F. Brooks Sr., died Saturday, January 19, 2008, at Heartland Hospice in Macon, Ga.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, January 22, in the Curtis Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Charles Broome, Tom Kerr, and Liza Marler officiating. Burial was in Westview Cemetery.

Mrs. Brooks was a native of McDuffie County. She was a sales clerk and buyer for Clary, Goldman, Kunnes, and Abes Department stores. She was a member of the Thomson First United Methodist Church. She was active at the Senior Citizen Center, a member of the 205 American Legion Auxiliary, and a member of the LAVFW 6672 Thomson, where she was the Chaplain. She was preceded in death by her husband; and her son, Sonny Brooks.

She is survived by her two grandchildren, Julie Howell, Alcoa, Tenn. and Jay Brooks, Hendersonville, Tenn.; four great-grandchildren, Mike and his wife, Amanda Howell, Knoxville, Josh Howell, Gray, Tenn., Tailor Brooks and Jarrett Brooks, both of Hendersonville, Tenn.; her daughter-in-law, Barbara Sue Brooks, Hendersonville, Tenn.; her sister-in-law, Jewell Broome, Thomson; and many nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Helon Burge Knighton

HARLEM, Ga. - Mrs. Helon Burge Knighton, 82, beloved wife of the late William Knighton, entered into rest Tuesday, December 25, 2007, at her residence.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Friday, December 28, 2007, at the Harlem Baptist Church with the Reverend Robert J. Blankenship and Reverend Philip Vestal officiating. Interment was in Bellevue Memorial Gardens, near Grovetown.

Mrs. Knighton was born in Clinton, N.C., to the late Bynum Brady Burge and Katie Lee Herring Burge and graduated from Fayetteville High School in North Carolina. She worked at the Snack Shop at Fort Gordon for five years and was an Assistant Librarian for Harlem High School for ten years. She was member of the AARP, NARFE, Harlem Woman's Club, Walton Library Club, and the VSP Club of Harlem. She had served as Past Matron of the Frances Bell Chapter Order of the Eastern Star # 75 and was a member of the Past Patrons Club of District #26. She was also a member of the Supreme Assembly International Order of the Rainbow for Girls and Holder of the Grand Cross of Color. Mrs. Knighton was a member of the Harlem Baptist Church and the Fidelis Sunday School Class.

Survivors include one son Douglas (Faye) Knighton, Thomson; five daughters, Carolyn Ebersole, Harlem, Donna Knighton, Harlem, Gwynn (Scotty) Dent, Thomson, Yvette (Greg) Godbee, Harlem, and Teresa (Steve) Tudor, Harlem; one brother Victor Burge, Lumberton, North Carolina; nine grandchildren, Lisa (Shawn) Land, Thomson, Mark (Adelaide) Vescovo, Harlem, Shannon (Tom) Parsons, Rio Rancho, New Mexico, Brice Tudor and Trevor Tudor, of Harlem; six great-grandchildren, Levi Land, Logan Land, Byran Smith, Jackson Garrison, Macy Buffington, and Casey Tabor. She was preceded in death by a brother Billie Dixie Burge. Pallbearers were Brent Godbee, Brian Godbee, Andy Blair, Scott Dean, Gary Holley and Jimmy Lewis.

Mr. R. Freddie Goldman

THOMSON, Ga. - Mr. R. Freddie Goldman, 75, beloved husband of Mrs. Shirley Goldman, died Tuesday, March 11, 2008, in the McDuffie Regional Medical Center.

Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 14, in the Savannah Valley Memorial Gardens, with Dr. Ron Drawdy officiating.

Mr. Goldman was a native of Lincoln County, but had lived in McDuffie County for many years. He had worked at Thomson Tire and Retread and had retired from Kingsley Mill after over 30 years of service. He was a Marine veteran and a Baptist.

Survivors include his wife Shirley Goldman, Thomson; a daughter, Vicki Crookham, Lincolnton; three sons, Ronnie (Nancy) Goldman, Bobby (Cindy) Goldman, and Michael Goldman, all of Thomson; two sisters, Sadie Peek, Thomson, and Mary Christine Goldman, N. Augusta, S.C.; a brother, Milton Goldman, Thomson; and 12 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Jim Peters, Marvin Norman, Buzz Dent, Shelton West, Danny Hubbard, and Randy Beatty.

Curtis Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
