Ms. Jean H. Johnson
LEXINGTON, S.C.- Ms. Jean Marie Hooper Johnson, 36, of the 400 block of South Church St., passed away March 8, 2004.
Born in Warwick, R.I., she was the daughter of Albert Henry Hooper Jr. and wife Cheryl of Chesapeake and mother, Deborah J. Brawn and husband Charles of Wiscasset, Maine.

She was predeceased by her paternal grandparents, Albert H. Hooper Sr. and Elizabeth A. Hopper.

She was a loving and devoted mother to her children. Jean was a very active and outgoing person, she loved flowers, traveling and antiques.

Besides her parents, Jean is survived by three children, Christopher Johnson Jr., Nathalle Johnson and Joseph Johnson of Lexington, S.C; her children's father, Christopher Johnson Sr. of Georgia; one brother, Albert H. Hooper III and wife Jennifer of Keller, Texas; as well as numerous family and friends from Rhode Island and Maine.

Memorial services were conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 11, 2004, at Oman Funeral Home and Crematory, Great Bridge Chapel, Chesapeake, Va., by the Rev. Jerry Mills.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Leukemia Society of America, Virginia Chapter, 2101 Executive Drive, Box 21 Hampton, Va. 23666-2404.

Mrs. Betty Jean Kendrick Winfrey

THOMSON, Ga. - Funeral services for Mrs. Betty Jean Kendrick Winfrey, 64, of Thomson were held Saturday, March 17, 2007 at 1 p.m. at the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, with the Rev. Darnell Brantley Sr., pastor, officiating. Interment was in Westview Cemetery.

Survivors include her husband, Billy Winfrey, Thomson; one daughter Diane Walton McNair, Thomson; one son, James Parker of Maryland; step-son, Billy Pete Winfrey, Atlanta; step-daughter, Gwen Huff, Thomson; three sisters, Hattie Surgeon and Mary McKenny, both of Philadelphia, PA, and Dorothy Butts, Thomson; a brother, Erwin Kendrick, Thomson, a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.

Thomson Funeral System was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. William Thomas (Bill) Whitaker

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Mr. William Thomas (Bill) Whitaker, 74 beloved husband of Catherine Whitaker of Charlotte, formally of Thomson, Ga., died Sunday, March 6, 2005 in Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte.
Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 9, 2005 in the Curtis Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Hal Hodges officiating. Burial followed in the Savannah Valley Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Robert W. Mayo Sr.
THOMSON, Ga.- Mr. Robert W. Mayo Sr., 69, is gone to be with the Lord and his loving wife, Ruth S. Mayo, of 50 years.
He died Monday, March 1, 2004, in Doctors Hospital. Graveside services were held Thursday, March 4, 2004, in Westview Cemetery with the Revs. Dan White and Mark Taylor officiating.

Mr. Mayo was a native of Columbia County. He was a retired Teamster Truck Driver and was currently employed at the Gordon Lakes Golf Course at Fort Gordon. He was a Navy Veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of the Shiloh United Methodist Church.

The family said he was a loving husband, father and grandfather.

Survivors include three daughters, Cindy Fuller, Thomson, Cheryl Loungeway, Grovetown and Debbie Taylor, Fayetteville; his son, Robert W. Mayo Jr., Newnan; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Shiloh United Methodist Church.

Curtis Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Lawrence E. Clark
International Paper Company retiree
DEARING, Ga.- Entered into rest Friday, March 5, 2004, at the St. Joseph Hospital, Augusta, Mr. Lawrence E. Clark, 73, husband of Jennell Kitchens Clark, of McCorkle Drive, Dearing.
Funeral Services were held Sunday, March 7, 2004 at 2 p.m., at Calvary Baptist Church, with the Rev. Todd Upchurch officiating. Interment was in Bellevue Memorial Gardens near Grovetown.

Mr. Clark, a native of McDuffie County, was an Army veteran of the Korean War, and had retired from International Paper Company. He was a faithful member of Calvary Baptist Church.

In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, Eddie and Sylvia Clark of Locust Grove, Ga.; a daughter, Kathy and Ray Quesenberry, Panama City, Fla.; one brother, Wyman Clark, Dearing; one sister, Ruth Clark, Dearing. Grandchildren are Steven Gabbard, Jim Clark, Melissa Gabbard, Kristi Clark, Casey Quesenberry, Kristy Quesenberry, Michelle Quesenberry.

Pallbearers were Jim Slaughter, Franklin Jones, Jack McCorkle, Mike Phillips, Darrell Treadwell and J.B. Key.

Starling Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Eva Louise Barksdale

NORWOOD, Ga. - Mrs. Eva Louise Barksdale, of Norwood, entered into rest on March 8, 2007, at the Warrenton Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Funeral services were held Sunday, March 11, 2007, at 2:30 p.m. at the Union Spring Missionary Baptist Church, Norwood. Interment was in the Gospel Aid Cemetery, Norwood, with Rev. G.L. Avery officiating.

Survivors include three devoted nieces, Hazel B. Lammie, Conyers, Ga., Nettie B. Owens, Jacksonville, N.C.,and Virginia B. Neal, Warrenton; three cousins, Lillie C. Hatney, Sharon, Ga., Joe Johnson and Gloria Mason, Taliaferro County, and devoted friend, Mary B. Williams.

Dawson's Mortuary was in charge of funeral services.

Mr. Detroit (Simp) Hobbs
DEARING, Ga. -- The funeral for Mr. Detroit (Simp) Hobbs, 81 of Dearing, was held on Friday, March 11, 2005 at 2 p.m. at the Poplar Head Baptist Church, Dearing, Rev. David Lowe, pastor, officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.
Survivors are wife, Mrs. Leona Hobbs, Dearing; seven children, Catherine Ivey, Thomson, TroyMcNair, Thomson, Mabel Robinson, Dearing, Jamie Hobbs, Dearing, Christine Hobbs, Dearing, Marie Hobbs, Dearing and Priscilla McNair, Glascock County; one sister, Lula Samuels, Augusta; 13 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.

Thomson Funeral System was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Charles "Chuck" O. Wells
DEARING, Ga.- Entered into rest Monday, March 15, 2004, Mr. Charles " Chuck" O. Wells, 57, husband of Billie Jean Cornelius Wells, of Neals Mill Road, Dearing.
Funeral Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 18, 2004, at Dearing Baptist Church, with the Rev. Michael Timmerman, Rev. David Harbeson, and Mr. Darrell Wells officiating. Interment will be in the Westview Cemetery, Thomson.

Mr. Wells, a native of Lithonia, Ga., was a mechanic for Fleming Tire and Wheel and an Army veteran of Korea. He was a deacon and member of Dearing Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Billie Jean Cornelius Wells; his mother Mary Wells, Thomson; two sons, David Wells, Dearing, and Ryan Wells, Arlington, Tx.; one brother, Bill Wells, Augusta; one sister, Sandy Kitchens, Augusta; and six grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Wayne Gheesling, Larry Zimmerman, George Holliman, Lem Brooks, Kristopher Wells, and Pete Bales.

Honorary pallbearers will be deacons of Dearing Baptist Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Relay For Life c/o Dearing Baptist Church, PO Box 278, Dearing, Ga., 30808

The body will lie in state one hour prior to the service.

Mr. Charles Edward Randall
Retired Truck Driver
THOMSON, Ga. - Mr. Charles Edward Randall of Thomson, entered into rest March 8, 2006.
Survivors include son, Charles Richard Randall, Atlanta; daughter, Amanda Dawn Randall, Atlanta; brother, David Randall, Atlanta and sister, Jean Smith, Atlanta.

Mr. Randall was a native of Atlanta, but lived in Thomson for the past 10 years. He retired as a truck driver.

Private memorial services will be held at a later date.

Beggs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. J. Lester Simons
AUGUSTA, Ga.- Mr. J. Lester Simons, age 79, entered into rest Sunday, March 7 at University Hospital.
Mr. Simons was the beloved husband of Margaret Hulsey Simons. He was from Jefferson County but had lived in the Augusta area since 1958. Mr. Simons had retired from Liquid Air as a Plant Operator and was currently employed with Budget Rental Car and was a member of First Primitive Baptist Church.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 10, at Elliott Sons Lumpkin Road Chapel with Elder Max Hicks officiating. Interment was at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

If so desired, donations may be made to First Primitive Baptist Church building fund.

Survivors include two sons, Ken Simons and wife Lisa, of Martinez, Jimmy Hulsey and wife Elaine, of Thomson; three daughters, Brenda Croft and husband Dale, of Barnwell, S.C., Debbie Davis of Martinez, and Marsha Hulsey of Martinez; 13 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; a brother, Elmer 'Bonnie' Simons of Charleston, S.C.; two sisters, Louise Ard of Charleston, S.C. and Vivian Newsome of Port Wentworth and numerous nieces and nephews.

Emma Kathryn (Kate) Emley
Infant
STATESBORO, Ga. - Emma Kathryn (Kate) Emley, of Statesboro, entered into rest March 9, 2006, at MCG. She was the beloved infant daughter of William and Amanda Williams Emley.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Sunday, March 12, 2006, at Little Briar Creek Baptist Church with Rev. Randy Dunaway officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Emma Kate Emley Memorial Fund at Sea Island Bank in Statesboro, The Ronald McDonald House, Charities of the Coastal Empire, MCG Childrens Medical Center and Shepeard Community Blood Center.

Mr. C. Daniel Kimbrel
AUGUSTA, Ga.- Mr. C. Daniel Kimbrel, age 54, died March 9, 2004 in Augusta.
Danny, as he was known to his friends, was a native of Thomson. He was the son of the late M. Monroe Kimbrel and Nita Matlock Kimbrel of Thomson. Mr. Kimbrel grew up in Thomson, achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, was educated in the public schools of Thomson and graduated from Wofford College and from the Rutgers School of Banking.

Following his graduation from college and military service in the United States Army, he entered the banking business. He held various management positions with Sarasota Bank & Trust Company, was president of American Bank of Sarasota, and became the youngest president of Ellis Banking Corporation, Sarasota, and later became executive vice president of NCNB for southwest Florida.

He left Florida in 1985 to return to Georgia, where he assumed the presidency of Thomson Oak Flooring Company, a leading manufacturer of oak flooring products, which he headed at the time of his death.

Mr. Kimbrel was a former chairman of American Savings & Loan Association of Miami, was a director of Rockdale Industries, Stone Mountain, of Manatee Fruit Company, Bradenton, Fla. He was also a director of the Georgia Forestry Association, the Georgia Carolina Council Boy Scouts of America. He was a member of the Young Presidents Organization, a member and past president of the Rotary Club of Thomson, and a Paul Harris Fellow in Rotary. He was a past chairman of the board of First Union National Bank of Augusta, and past president of the National Oak Flooring Manufacturers Association, of the Augusta Golf Association, and of Sacred Heart Cultural Center. He was an avid outdoorsman, a good friend to many, a devoted father.

Mr. Kimbrel is survived by his wife of 29 years, Mary Lane Preston Kimbrel, and two sons, Preston Monroe Kimbrel and Charles Daniel Kimbrel, Jr., all of Augusta, plus a sister, Jenny Wood Kimbrel Bunn of Winston-Salem, N.C., and two nieces, Kimbrel Bunn Morris of Charlotte, N.C., and Jane Stephens Bunn of Durham, N.C.

Graveside services were held at Westover Memorial Park, Augusta, on Thursday, March 11, 2004 at 2 p.m. with The Rev. P. James Costigan officiating.

Memorial gifts, if desired are suggested to the Community Foundation of the CSRA, P.O. Box 31358, Augusta, Ga., 30903, or to the University Health Care Foundation, Jernigan Cancer Center, 2100 Central Avenue, Suite D-1, Augusta, Ga., 30904.

Pallbearers were John J. Priester, G. John Carey, Whiting H. Preston, James A. Bunn, III, Thomas M. Blanchard, Jr., Clayton P. Boardman, III, Henry B. Garrett, III, Wyckliffe A. Knox, Jr., Robert A. Pattillo, John M. McCarty, and J. Douglas Engler. Honorary pallbearers were Matthew S. Cranford, Daniel A. Duggan, William H. Moretz, Jr., Richard B. Sasnett, Jr., Michael Shlaer, the staff of Thomson Oak Flooring Company, the members of the Augusta Golf Association, and the members of Mr. Kimbrel's business forum.

Platt's Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

EVANS, Ga. -- Mrs. Betty Jo Burnette, 75, of Evans went to be with the Lord on Thursday, March 10, 2005.
Survivors include her loving husband of 50 years, Jesse D. Burnette of Evans. Daughters; Debbie Williford and husband, Wayne of Gibson, Elaine Black and husband Robert (Noah) of Thomson, Kathy West and husband Dan of Fernandina Beach, Fla., seven grandchildren, four great grandchildren, one brother, Bob Dudley of Cocoa Beach, Fla.

Mrs. Burnette was a homemaker and a member of the Women's Christian Fellowship of Fleming Christian Church.

Funeral services were held on Monday, March 14, 2005 at 11 at Poteet Funeral Home Chapel with Marshal Bender officiating. Pallbearers were Charles Wylds, Deryl Owens, Stephen McMillen, Mark Owens, Mack Kitchens, and Carlos Quiles. Interment was at Hillcrest Memorial Park.
