James Hale

James Alvyn Hale, 81, of Skyline Drive in Toccoa, died Wednesday, April 4, 2001.

Born Nov. 27, 1919 in Oconee County, Ga., he was a son of the late Frank E. and Blondine Phillips Hale. He retired from WABCO after more than 40 years of service, and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Toccoa, where he was a member of the Davis Vaughn Sunday School Class. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marion Christine Edmunds Hale, and by two sisters, Frances Hale and Nora Elizabeth Hale.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. tomorrow from the Toccoa First Baptist Church. The Revs. Dr. Henry Fields and Dr. Jim Nelson will be officiating. Interment will follow in Stephens Memorial Gardens.

Members of the Davis Vaughn Sunday School Class will serve as honorary escorts.

Survivors include two sons, Timothy W. Hale of Toccoa and Philip E. Hale of Athens; a sister, Rebecca Aycock of Toccoa; a brother, John Hale of Athens and five grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Toccoa at 601 East Tugalo Street, Toccoa, GA 30577.

Whitlock Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Julia Rudeseal

Julia Alberta Holbrook Rudeseal, 75, of Clayton, died Monday, April 2, 2001.

Born June 3, 1925 in Oconee County, S.C., she was a daughter of the late McKinley and Laura Hudson Holbrook. She had lived most of her life in Stephens County, and was retired from Trogdon Furniture Company in Toccoa. She was a member of Old Union Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Robert L. Rudeseal.

Funeral services were held Wednesday from the Hillcrest Chapel of Acree-Davis Funeral Home. The Rev. John McKnight officiated. Interment followed in the Old Union Baptist Church cemetery.

Survivors include two daughters, Elizabeth Young of Shaloute, N.C. and Bonnie Sue Hudson of Toccoa; four sons, Robert E. Rudeseal of Buchanan, William J. Rudeseal of Toccoa, Tony D. Rudeseal of Eastanollee and Thomas T. Rudeseal of Pickens, S.C.; five sisters, Thelma Welch of Mountain City, Clara Outz of Cleveland and Arzelia Pelfrey, Bertha Long and Lorenza Norris, all of Westminster, S.C.; two brothers, Joshua Holbrook of Westminster and Harold Holbrook of Eastanollee; 15 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Acree-Davis Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Kermit H. Carter

Kermit Hicks Carter, 85, of West Currahee Street in Toccoa, died Sunday, April 1, 2001.

Born Dec. 1, 1915 in Stephens County, he was a son of the late Farris and Nettie Bramlett Carter. A lifelong resident of Stephens County, he was a member of Zebulon Baptist Church, where he was active in the Benjamin Men's Sunday School Class. He retired from Patterson Pump Company after 23 years. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Clemmie Moore Carter, and by a brother, Zack Carter.

Funeral services were held Wednesday from Zebulon Baptist Church. The Revs. Ty Childers, Dr. Charles Carter and Kenneth Moon officiated. Interment followed in the Carnes Creek Baptist Church cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Lucille Segars Carter; two sons and daughters-in-law, Ed and Linda Carter of Conyers and Farris and Julia Carter of Marietta; two step-daughters and sons-in-law, Faye and James Adams of Toccoa and Jean and Mark Aldridge of Portland Ore.; two brothers, Hamp Carter of Warner Robbins and J.T.Carter of Toccoa; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Walter Moore, Jerry Moore, Vernon Cash, Bobby Jordan, Royce Carter and Roger Moore.

Memorials may be made to the Zebulon Baptist Church Building Fund at 1127 W. Currahee Street, Toccoa, GA 30577.

Bertha Collins

Bertha Vickery Collins, 72, of Vickery Road, Toccoa, died Monday, Jan. 7, 2002.

A daughter of the late Arthur and Lizzie Wheeler Vickery, she was born July 27, 1929 in Stephens County where she lived all of her life. She was a vocalist with the Collins Family music group. A member of Tugalo Baptist Church.

Funeral services were held Thursday at the Hillcrest Chapel of the Acree-Davis Funeral Home. The Revs. W.L. Anthony and Randall Roberson officiated. Interment was in Tugalo Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Kenneth Moon officiating.

Survivors include her husband, Curtis Collins; a daughter, Peggy Childers and a son, Randy Collins, both of Toccoa and four grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Jimmy Boyd, James Simmons, Rusty Mitchell, John Childers, Howard Bailey and Wendell Collins.

Acree-Davis Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

David Gilmer Ramsey

David Gilmer Ramsey, 62, of Clarkesville, died Friday, Jan. 4, 2002.

Born in Habersham County, he was the son of the late R.E. and Estelle Taylor Ramsey, was co-owner of Northeast Georgia Building and Home Center, Clarkesville, was a U.S. Army Veteran, was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Clarkesville and served as an elder at the church.

Memorial services were held Monday, Jan. 7, at First Presbyterian Church, Clarkesville. The Rev. Bruce Dodd officiated. Interment was at the Clarkesville Memorial Cemetery, Clarkesville.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Vesta A. Ramsey of Clarkesville; daughters and sons-in-law, Lisa and Tim Elliott of Gainesville, Robin and Al Newell of Homer and Jennifer and Todd Smith of Blairsville; son, Kevin Ramsey; step children and husbands, Angela and Pat Crellin of Huntington Beach, Calif., Michael and Kelli Withrow of Gainesville and Becki C. Withrow of Gainesville; brother and sister-in-law, Larry and Toni Ramsey of Clarkesville; sister and brother-in-law, Brenda and Ron Waters of Clarkesville and grandchildren, Blake Martin, Louise Elliott, Paul and Jessica Newell, Jessie, T.J. and Brian Smith, Brandon, Avery and Jayden Withrow and Katie and Ben Crellin.

Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church of Clarkesville.

Hillside Memorial Chapel, Clarkesville was in charge of arrangements.

Ronnie Jones

Ronnie Ray Jones, 54, of Lavonia, died Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2002.

Born in Wilkes County, he was the son of the late William J. Craft Sr. and Marion Lee Craft and the adopted son of Ray Hall Jones and Mary Adams Jones. He was an auto parts salesman and manager of Carquest Auto Parts of Toccoa and a member of the Cedar Creek Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by a brother James J. Craft and a sister, Beverly Craft.

Funeral services will be held Jan. 11 in the Chapel of the Strickland Funeral Home. The Rev. Leon Miller and Dr. Dan Vincent will officiate. Interment will be in the Sardis Baptist Church Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife: Mildred Woods Turner of Lavonia; three sons, Scott Jones of Toccoa, Brian Jones of Martin and Michael Jones of Lavonia; step son, Timmy Ramey of Pickens, S.C.; one daughter, Angela Jones Kastner of Cleveland; two step-daughters, Cindy Tallman of Eastanollee and Tammy Valdivia of Pickens; two brothers, Larry Craft of Lawrenceville and William J. Craft Jr. of Charleston, S.C.; two sisters, Brenda Angevine of Bethlehem and Sybil Sanders of Hartwell; nine grandchildren, Cordell Jones, Jansen Jones, Melia Jones, Chandler Jones, Shelby Jones, Adam Kastner, Amber Kastner, Kyle Kastner, Kaylee Kastner and eight step-grandchildren; Danny Valdivia, Sara Valdivia, Christopher Valdivia, Jimmy Ramey, Carmon Ramey, Hannah Tallman, Tara Tallman and Christopher Tallaman also survive.

Strickland Funeral Home of Hartwell is in charge of arrangements.

Shirley Sue LeCroy Ivester

Shirley Sue LeCroy Ivester, 55, of Whispering Woods Road, Martin, died Jan. 6, 2002.

Born July 24, 1946 in Franklin County, she was a daughter of Jimmie Sue DeFoor LeCroy and the late Jewell LeCroy and had lived most of her life in Stephens County. She was a member of New Franklin Christian Church and the Adult Sunday School Class. She was also a member of the AARP. She enjoyed catering weddings as a hobby.

Funeral services were held Jan. 9, from the New Franklin Christian Church. The Revs. Steven Platt and Kevin Clark officiated. Interment followed in Allens United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Survivors include her husband, Troy Ivester; her mother, Jimmie Sue DeFoor LeCroy; a step-daughter and son-in-law, Melanie Dawn and Ronnie King of Carnesville; a step-grandson, Rowan Andrew King of Carnesville; mother-in-law Bertie Mae Ivester of Toccoa and a special friend, Eola Owens of Toccoa.

Memorials may be made to the New Franklin Christian Church Building Fund, New Franklin Church Road, Canon, GA 30520 or the Mission Fund.

Pallbearers were Charles Cobb, Ken Ward, Ty Cawthon, Paul Milligan, Ron Hayes and Joe Thurmond.

George Lester Turpin

George Lester Turpin, 88, of Davis Road, Eastanollee, died Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2002.

Born in Baxley, he lived most of his life in Stephens County. He worked at Lullabyís, Trogdonís and retired from Singer Manufacturing Company. He was also a farmer and a carpenter. He was a member of the Eastanollee Baptist Church and the Senior Menís Sunday School Class. He was the oldest and last surviving son of the late William Wesley and Nancy Olivia Gibby Turpin. He was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Donna Turpin Williams, eight brothers and five sisters.

Funeral services will be held today at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of Whitlock Mortuary. The Revs. Richard Ivester and Charles Ivey will officiate. Interment will follow at Stephens Memorial Gardens.

Survivors include the widow, Prather Williams Turpin; a son and daughter-in-law, Fermon and Mary B. Turpin of Toccoa; daughters, Mickey Turpin of the home, Mary F. Turpin and Kathy Turpin Williams, both of Eastanollee, Rachel Turpin Walters Milford Morrison and a son-in-law, Jack Morrison of Lavonia; and six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; sisters, Sarah Turpin Standridge and Ruth Turpin Standridge of Toccoa, Alice Turpin Rice of Hartwell and Lula Turpin Ricketts of Belton, S.C.; sisters-in-law, Irene McCollum Turpin Brown of Hartwell and Ruby Nell Cole Turpin of Bowersville; brother-in-law, Ben Kay Sr. of Martin.

Pallbearers were Dale Wiggins, Keith Milford, Eddie Floyd, Seth Williams, Paul Kent and Billy Turpin.

Vera Smith Lindley

Vera Smith Lindley, 82, of Hayes Street, Toccoa, died Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2002.

Born Sept. 7, 1919 in Hall County, she was a daughter of the late Luther Howard and Rilla Williams Smith. She had lived in Alabama and Texas before moving to Toccoa in 1993 and was of the Methodist faith. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Lindley.

Funeral services will be held today at 3 p.m. from the graveside in Sunshine United Methodist Church Cemetery. The Rev. Walton McNeal will officiate.

Survivors include three sisters, Martha Terrell and Melba Williams of Toccoa and Clara Hambleton of Mt. Airy; a brother, Howard Smith of Greensboro, N.C.; two half sisters, Grace Purdy and Dot Bolmon, both of Toccoa and a step-daughter-in-law, Helga Lindley of Houston, Texas; one step grandchild; one step-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Pallbearers are Steve Williams, Ted Williams, Bud Graves, Greg Howard, Luther Terrell and David Terrell.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or to Sunshine United Methodist Church.
