Carl Hensley McElreath

Carl Hensley McElreath, 78, of Talladega, Ala., formerly of Seneca, S.C. died Monday, June 10, 2002.

He was born Oct. 5, 1923 in Jefferson County. He was a retired security officer with Duke Power Company and was of the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ida Olene Burke McElreath; parents, Andrew and Alice Greenway McElreath; brothers, Cicero, Julius and Paul McElreath; sisters, Maude Fortner, India Mae Ledford, Hassie Echols and Minnie Darnell.

Graveside services were held Wednesday, June 12, at the Oconee Memorial Park. The Rev. Bob Spearman officiated.

Survivors include sons, Kenneth C. McElreath of Gainesville, Dwayne S. McElreath of Talladega, Ala., Terry H. McElreath of Walhalla, S.C. and Tony M. McElreath of Toccoa; daughter, Mrs. James “Hilda” Gragg of Cornelia; sisters, Pearl Jones of Cleveland, Aileen Neisler and Florence Boswell, both of Commerce; 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Cancer Centers of the Carolinas, 131 Lila Doyle Drive, Seneca, S.C. 29672.

Sandifer Funeral Home, Westminster, S.C. was in charge of arrangements.

James B. Williams

James Benton Williams, 63, of Lavonia, died Wednesday, June 12, 2002.

Born in Franklin County, he was a son of the late Henry David and Julia Chappelear Williams. He was a retired truck driver with Road Way Express, was a United States Army veteran and was a Mason. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by the mother of his son, Linda Brock Williams.

Graveside services will be held today at 10 a.m. from the Lavonia City Cemetery. Dr. Larry Finger officiated.

Survivors include one son, James Todd Williams of Anderson, S.C.; one sister, Mary Lane Craven, Canton; two brothers, David Williams of Dunwoody and Douglas Williams of LaFayette.

Hamby Funeral Home of Lavonia is in charge of arrangements.

Fanneal Gailey Boling

Fanneal Gailey Boling, 89, of Homer, died Monday, June 10, 2002.

Born April 7, 1913 in Banks County, she was the daughter of the late Thomas B. and Lucy Lane Gailey. She was a teacher at the Rock Springs School and was a homemaker. She was a Sunday School teacher and a Bible School teacher and a member of the Charity Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Lee Boling; son, Dwayne Robert Boling; brother, Garland Gailey and sisters, Fay Gailey and Jeanette Samples.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 12 from the Charity Baptist Church, Homer. The Revs. Vaughn Howington and Billy Burrell officiated. Interment was in the Damascus Baptist Church Cemetery, Homer.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Judy and Ernest Rogers and Jane and Larry Maney, all of Baldwin; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry and Glenda Boling, Homer and Dan and Gail Boling of Baldwin; one sister, Vernell Wilbanks of Claxton; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Charity Baptist Church Building Fund, 1302 Highway 51 North, Homer, GA 30547.

Leona Chastain McCall

Leona “Lee” Chastain McCall, 67, of Spartanburg, S.C., died Monday, Sept. 30, 2002.

A native of Hartwell, she was the daughter of the late Johnnie B. and Annie Wilson Chastain. She attended South Spartanburg Baptist Church and was retired from the S&S; Manufacturing Company after more than 27 years of service. She was first married to the late Talmadge Carey and was preceded in death by a brother, Gordon B. Chastain and a step-daughter, Laura McCall.

Funeral services were held Thursday, Oct. 3 at the Lanford-Pollard Chapel. The Rev. Richard M. Thomas officiated. Interment was in Heritage Memorial Gardens.

Survivors include her husband of 27 years, Daniel Grady McCall; brother, Bryan McCall; sisters, Alva Chastain Cash of Toccoa and Ann Chastain Herring of Kennesaw; stepchildren, Daniel McCall Jr., Jeff McCall, Susan M. Minger and Cathy McCall all of Manchester, Tenn; step-grandchildren, Josh Killen and Brook Killen of Spartanburg.

Lanford-Pollard Funeral Home, Spartanburg, S.C., was in charge of arrangements.

J.B. Latham

John Brady “J.B.” Latham, 79, of Toccoa, died Monday, Sept. 30, 2002.

A son of the late Benjamin Callaway and Lillie Lou Queen Latham, he was born May 1, 1923 in Mt. Airy and lived most of his life in Chamblee and the last 27 years in Stephens County. He was retired from the Stephens County School System as a bus driver. He was a U.S. Navy World War II veteran, serving in the European and Pacific campaigns. He was also a member of Harrell Grove Baptist Church in Chamblee, the Masonic Lodge #444 in Chamblee and VFW 4346. He was preceded in death by three brothers, one sister and one grandchild.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, at the Hillcrest Chapel. The Rev. Jewell Gaines officiated. Interment was in Stephens Memorial Gardens.

Survivors include his wife Edith Marian Patterson Latham; daughter and son-in-law, Judy L. and Richard Hayes of Toccoa; daughter, Donna L. Patterson of Toccoa; son, Ronnie Latham of Toccoa; six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; five sisters, Dorothy Lee Latham of Doraville, Carrie Mae Loudermilk of Chamblee, Josephine Turpin of Flowery Branch, Barbara Jean Rainey and Gloria Cleo Hester, both of Suwanee.

Acree-Davis Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Fred Mullinax

Fred Mullinax, 79, of Broxton, died Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2002.

He was a well-known business man in the Coffee County area.

Funeral services will be held today at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Broxton. Interment will follow in the Providence Baptist Church Cemetery near their home.

Survivors include his wife, Ruby S. Mullinax of Broxton; daughters, Sue Mobley of Broxton, Cherra Culver of Hinesville, Fredna Hall of Augusta; son, Cliff Mobley of Broxton; brother, John Mullinax of Toccoa; sisters, Betty Bell and Polly Cooper, both of Mauldin, S.C.

Sims Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mildred Ann Moore Watson

Mildred Ann Moore Watson, 68, of Lakeside Trail, Martin, died Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2003 at Stephens County Hospital.

Born Jan. 11, 1935 in Chattanooga, Tenn., she was a daughter of the late William John and Minnie Mae Dudley Moore. She retired as a medical assistant for W. Baird Hudgins, MD, of Atlanta. She was an avid fisherman, bowler, and artist and was of the Baptist faith.

Funeral services were held Sat. Feb. 8, from the chapel of Whitlock Mortuary. The Rev. Jerrell Beatty officiated. Interment was at Roselane Cemetery.

Survivors include her husband, James R. Watson of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Elaine and Doug Lyon of Cumming; sons and daughter-in-law, Tim and Wendy Watson of Conyers, Louis Waine Watson of Dallas and Jonathan Eric Watson of Conyers and two granddaughters and five grandsons.

Pallbearers were Doug Lyon, Pat Smith, Brandon Lyon, Bradley Lyon, Chad Watson and Colin Watson.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society by calling 1-800-227-2345.

Betty Ruth Standridge Gilstrap

Betty Ruth Standridge Gilstrap, 62, of Owl Swamp Road, Toccoa, died Friday, Feb. 7, 2003 at Lanier Park Hospital in Gainesville.

The daughter of Ruth Turpin Standridge and the late Thomas Standridge, she was born June 18, 1940 in Stephens County where she lived her entire life. She was a homemaker and was a member of the Shiloh Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her father, Thomas Standridge and by her son, Danny Finley.

Funeral services were held Sunday, Feb. 9, at the Hillcrest Chapel of the Acree-Davis Funeral Home. The Revs. Ernest Hunter, Jimmy Maness and Ron Wilburn officiated. Interment was at Toccoa City Cemetery.

Survivors include her mother, Ruth Turpin Standridge of Toccoa; her husband, John Gilstrap of the home; five grandchildren; two step-daughters, Johnette Wilburn of Clarkesville and Teresa Key of Gainesville; sister and brother-in-law, Judy and J.B. White of Brent, Ala.; two brothers and sisters-in-law, W.W. “Red” and Ommie Standridge of Clarkesville and Roger and Ellane Standridge of Toccoa and a number of nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Claude Bingham, Dale Dockery, Jimmy Maness, Lloyd McDaniel, Dale Standridge and Brandon Walker.

Acree-Davis Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

John H. Scut Mauldin

John H. “Scut” Mauldin, 77, of Smith Road, Lavonia, died Thursday, Feb. 6, 2003 at Emory University Hospital, Decatur.

He was born in Franklin County, Feb. 27, 1925 to the late Guy Maudlin Sr. and Fannie Garland Mauldin. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Lavonia. He was a member of the Zack Daniel Sunday School class, American Legion, Lavonia VFW Post 5897 and a Mason. He was the retired co-owner of the Lavonia Roller Mills and a cattle farmer. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Kathryn Diane Mauldin; one sister, Mary Sue Thornton Musmacker and one brother, James Mauldin.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Feb. 8, at the First Baptist Church of Lavonia. Dr. Larry Finger and the Rev. Richard Bielski officiated. Interment was in the Lavonia City Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Etrulia Cotton Mauldin of the home; two daughters, Beverly Maudlin Smith of Daytona Beach, Fla. and Janet Maudlin Carey of Royston; one sister, Mildred Lankford of Lavonia and Guy Mauldin Jr. of Lavonia and six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Hamby Funeral Home, Lavonia was in charge of arrangements.

Virginia Verner Hunt

Virginia Verner Hunt, 79, of Rome, formerly of Toccoa died Friday, Feb. 7, 2003 at her home.

A daughter of the late Mary Verner, she was born Sept. 7, 1923 in Stephens County, having lived in Toccoa most of her life and in Rome since 1973. She was a member of the Armuchee Baptist Church in Rome and was a devoted housewife and mother. She was a graduate of Stephens County High School and was a former member of Hill Street Baptist Church in Toccoa. She was married to her husband, William Henry “Bill” Hunt on Sept. 5, 1942, who survives.

Funeral services were held Monday, Feb. 10, at the Parkview Chapel of Fred Talley’s Funeral Home. The Rev. Glenn Clonts officiated.

Funeral services will be held in Toccoa at the Hillcrest Chapel of the Acree-Davis Funeral Home today, Feb. 11 at 11 a.m. The Rev. Paul Garrison will officiate. Interment will be at the Toccoa City Cemetery.

Survivors include her husband, Bill Hunt of the home; two daughters, Sherri Hunt and Terri Billings, both of Rome; one son, Michael Hunt of Enola, Pa. and three grandchildren, Brandon Ledford, Michele Billings and Morgan Billings.

Pallbearers will be Jack Stovall, Danny Prewett, Charles Dooley, Vernon Ramsey, Gary Verner and Greg Holbrook.

Acree-Davis Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.
