Willie Mae Blake Mitchell

Willie Mae Blake Mitchell, 82, of Martin, died Friday, Feb. 7, 2003, at the Toccoa Nursing Center.

Born Nov. 20, 1920 in Union, S.C., she was the daughter of the late Arthur and Eunice Milwood Wyatt and had lived in Decatur before moving to Martin 17 years ago. She was a member of Mullins Ford Baptist church and The Order of Eastern Star. She formerly owned and operated Blake’s Beauty Shop in Decatur.

Funeral services were held Monday, Feb. 10, at Mullins Ford Baptist Church. The Revs. Truitt Brawner and Roger Elrod officiated. Interment was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include her husband, Thomas A. Mitchell of the home; a daughter, A. Ruth Horton of Toccoa; a son, A.R. Brown of Gainesville, Fla.; a step-daughter, Linda Mitchell Hall of Jesup; six grandchildren, Glenn C. Horton of Crawfordville, Fla., A. Michael Brown of Miami, Fla., Brandon Hall and Kacie Hall, both of Jesup, Terri H. Moore of Suwanee, April Brown Pera of Homestead, Fla.; three great-grandchildren, Jesse T. Horton of St. Augustine, Fla., Chance Jagger Moore and Morgan K. Walker, both of Suwanee.

Pallbearers were Jeff Moore, Pat Keller, William Hall and Brandon Hall.

Whitlock Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.

Dylan McIntyre

Dylan Todd McIntyre, infant son of Brandy K. Ramey and Casey McIntyre died Friday, Feb. 7, 2003 at Stephens County Hospital.

A private graveside service was held Sunday, Feb. 9, at the Zebulon Baptist Church Cemetery. The Rev. Brady Cleveland officiated.

Survivors include parents, Brandy Ramey and Casey McIntrye; sister, Alayna Smith; grandparents, Dale and Karen Ramey of Martin; Grady and Peggy McIntyre of Martin; great-grandparents, Bertha Ramey of Clayton; Grant and Winnie Crisp of Toccoa, “Dub” Sorrells of Eastanollee; great-great-grandmother, Ollie Sorrells of Eastanollee; uncles, Scott McIntyre of Martin, Eric McIntyre and Casey Ramey, all of Martin; aunt, Karie Ramey of Martin and maternal great-aunt, Marie Moore of Clarkesville.

Acree-Davis Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Virgle Edward Craig

Virgle Edward Craig, 87, of Colorado, died Feb. 7, 2003.

Born Dec. 23, 1915 in Otwell, Ind., he was the son of the late Clarence W. Craig and Alma D. Goode Craig. He graduated from Norcatur, Kansas High School in 1939. He also attended John Brown University in Siloam Springs, Ark. He married Virginia Johnson, Sept. 22, 1940 in Norcatur, Kansas. He has lived in Brighton area since 1965.

He owned and operated WLET AM & FM in Toccoa from 1946-1965, having managed it from 1940-1946. He owned and operated KBRN Radio Station in Bringhton, Colo. from 1965-1969. He also worked as an engineer for KBTR Radio in Denver, Colo. from 1969-1972. He was a dedicated Christian and taught an adult Bible class for 18 years and was a lay minister for the First United Methodist Church in Toccoa. He held worship services in various churches and accompanied R.G. LeTourneau to Liberia Africa where he trained native pastors for Bible teaching. He served on many religious and civic organization boards and was a public speaker for many occasions. He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Stella, Lucille and Luetta and brothers, Wayne and Doyle.

Funeral services were held Sunday, Feb. 9, at Tabor Funeral Home, Brighton, Colo. The Revs. Bobby Johnson and Claud Pettit officiated. Graveside services will be held today, Feb. 11 at Pea Ridge Cemetery, Pea Ridge, Ariz.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia J. Craig of Brighton, Colo.; son Douglas and his wife Virginia Terrell of Orlando, Fla.; daughter, Kathleen and her husband Glenn Glinsmann of Carrollton, Texas; daughter, Cynthia and her husband Reginald Roberson of Sarcoxie, Mont.; sisters, Imogene Alexander of Clarkesville, Genevieve Schuler of Salina, Kansas, Jeanetta Largen of Vancover, Wash.; grandchildren, Tara Williams, Dawn Petersen, Erin Craig, Wesley Glinsmann, Melanie Glinsmann, Jeremy Ostendorf, Mark Ostendorf, Eric Ostendorf and David Ostendorf and great-grandchild, Kaitlyn Williams.

Annie Estelle Giles Powell

Annie Estelle Giles Powell, 84, of Myrtle Street, Toccoa, died Thursday, Feb. 6, 2003 in Habersham Home East in Demorest.

The daughter of the late C.W. and Jessie Jenkins Giles, she was born June 25, 1918 in Dekalb County where she lived most of her life, having lived for the past six years in Toccoa. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. Prior to moving to Toccoa she served as church pianist for a long number of years. She retired in 1980 from the Dekalb County School System. She was preceded in death by her husband Milton R. Powell.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Feb. 8, at Calvary Baptist Church. The Revs. Dennis Petty and R.C. King officiated. Graveside services were held at the Melwood Cemetery located in Stone Mountain.

Survivors include her daughter Amelia Petty and son-in-law Rev. Dennis Petty of Toccoa; a daughter Ramona Cole and son-in-law Ken Cole of Vonore, Tenn.; a granddaughter, Kim Johnson and husband, Calvin Johnson of Covington; three great-grandsons, Matt, Caleb and Noah Johnson and a number of nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Ken Cole, Calvin Johnson, Matt Johnson, Caleb Johnson, Giles Hill and Johnny Hill.

Acree-Davis Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Lorayne R. Black

Lorayne R. Black, 85, of Paris, Texas, died Friday, Feb. 7, 2003 at Christus St. Joseph’s Hospital South.

She was born Feb. 11, 1917 in Brookston, Texas, the daughter of James Milton and Willie B. Hewgley Rives. She married James M. Black on Oct. 17, 1936 in Loneoak. He preceded her in death June 14, 1987. She was a seamstress, homemaker and a member of Oak Park United Methodist Church where she was in the Goodwill Sunday School class. She loved to cook.

Funeral services will be held today, Feb. 11 at 2:30 p.m. at Gene Roden’s Sons Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Steve Cook will officiate. Interment will follow in Meadowbrook Garden’s Cemetery under the direction of Gene Roden’s Sons Funeral Home.

Survivors include her daughters, Patricia Nell Mahan of Paris, Texas and Alice Ann Black of Santa Rosa, Calif.; sons, James M. “Jimmy” Black of Mabank, Texas, John R. Black of Toccoa, William G. “Jerry” Black of Pans, Texas and Michael Joe Black of Powderly, Texas; grandchildren Kyle Black of Garland, Texas, Kim Day of Garland, Texas, Sean Black of Toccoa, Shelley Denton of Athens, Pam Davis of Baytown, Texas, Keith Black of Blossom, Texas, Kevin Black of Blossom, Texas, Robert Mahan of Summer, Texas, Chad Ghiron of Santa Rosa, Calif., Kristen Brabant of Santa Rosa, Calif. and Autumn Black of Paris, Texas; nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Pallbearers will be Kyle Black, Keith Black, Kevin Black, Sean Black, Robert Mahan and Chad Ghiron.

Alisa J. Shirley

Alisa J. McKinney Shirley, 31, of Deer Chase, Toccoa, died Thursday, March 27, 2003 at Stephens County Hospital.

The daughter of Andy Joe and Judy Tincher McKinney, she was born June 21, 1971 in Oak Hill, West Va. She attended the University of Louisville in Louisville, Ky. She was a missiionary for a number of years with D.O.O.R. (Deaf Opportunity Out Reach) a mission group reaching out to deaf people for Christ. She was also a member of Hebron Baptist Church in Dacula.

Funeral services were held Sunday, March 30, at the Nazareth United Methodist Church, Winder. The Rev. Daniel Howard officiated. Interment was in the Nazareth United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Survivors include her parents Andy Joe and Judy McKinney of Wayne, West Va.; husband, the Rev. Christopher Shirley of the home; two daughters, Sara Rose Shirley and Marissa Shirley, both of the home; a son, Justin Shirely of the home; five step-children, Kara Shirley, Tyler Shirley, Casey Shirley, Ashely Shirley and Jennifer Shirley of the home; a brother, Jason McKinney of Lexington, S.C. and a sister Rebecca Moore of Lexington, S.C.

Bruce Wilbanks

Bruce Wilbanks, 67, of Queen Street, Toccoa, died Tuesday, April 1, 2003 at the Toccoa Nursing Center.

The son of the late John and Pearl Cobb Wilbanks, he was born Dec. 27, 1935 in Stephens County where he lived all his life. He was a construction worker and was of the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by brothers Clyde, Howard, Clarence, Robert and Fred Wilbanks; sisters, Mary Morgan, Bernice Wilbanks, Mammie Sue Deal and Emma Bragg.

Funeral services will be held today, April 4, at the Hillcrest Chapel of the Acree-Davis Funeral Home. The Revs. Ray Bohannon and Richard Ivester will officiate. Interment will be in Stephens Memorial Gardens.

Survivors include his wife, Flossie Wilbanks of the home; a daughter, Melissa Wilks of Lula; a son, Timothy Wilbanks of Elberton; two step-daughters reared in the home, Wanda Garrett of Toccoa and Tammi McCroskey of Clayton; a step-son reared in the home, Danny McCroskey of Dahlonega; a brother, Hershel Wilbanks of Morrow; three sisters, Ruby Collins of Spartanburg, S.C., Patsy Dilbert of Florida and Penny Nix of College Park and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Russell Brock, Roy Mans, James Deal, Robert Gailey, George Bohannon and Tim Smith.

Phillip Curtis

Phillip Jeffrey Curtis, 46, of Beuna Vista Drive, Toccoa, died Tuesday, April 1, 2003 at the Habersham Medical Center.

The son of Josephine Valentine Curtis Bearden and the late Riley Sanford Curtis, he was born April 11, 1956 in Florence, Ala., where he lived most of his life before moving to Toccoa 25 years ago. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and worked for Stephens County. He was a member of New Birth Revival Center where he played the bass guitar. He was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Jo Eller.

Funeral services were held Thursday, April 3, at the Hillcrest Chapel of the Acree-Davis Funeral Home. The Revs. Ray Strickland and Terry Yearwood officiated. Interment was at Stephens Memorial Gardens.

Survivors include his mother, Josephine Valentine Curtis Bearden and step-father Cecil Bearden of Toccoa; a brother, Charles Curtis and sister-in-law, Renea Curtis of Florence, Ala.; a nephew, Tony Curtis of Florence, Ala., a niece Tori Curtis of Florence, Ala.; three half-brothers, J.B. Curtis, Sandy Curtis, Ronald Curtis, all of Florence, Ala. and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Larry Hicks, Randy Keller, Jeff Dee, Bobby King Jr., Daniel Cantrell and Bobby King Sr.

Betty Burns Ashley

Betty Burns Ashley, 63, of Houston, Texas, formerly of Toccoa died Tuesday, April 1, 2003 at the Hospice of the Upstate, Anderson, S.C.

The daughter of the late James Woodrow and Tressie Honea Burns, she was born Nov. 8, 1939 in Oconee County, S.C. She lived in Stephens County for a number of years and for the past 30 years in Houston, Texas. She was employed with Delta Airlines for 37 years as a senior flight attendant, based in Houston, Texas and she was a charter member of Calvary Baptist Church in Toccoa.

Funeral servcies were held Thursday, April 3, at the Hillcrest Chapel of the Acree-Davis Funeral Home. The Rev. Don Fuller officiated. Interment was at Stephens Memorial Gardens.

Survivors include sister, Lynn Jewell and brother-in-law, Doug Jewell of Toccoa; sister Terry Massey and brother-in-law Joe Massey of Colbert; brother, Elvin Burns of Anderson, S.C.; brother Dudley Burns and sister-in-law, Mary Burns of Toccoa and a number of nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Derrick Jewell, Greg Jewell, Doug Jewell, Elvin Burns, Bob Willoughby and David Ferguson.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Upstate, 1835 Rogers Road, Anderson, S.C. 29621.

Johnnie Mae Hall Blanchard

Johnnie Mae Hall Blanchard, 82, of Rose Lane, Toccoa, formerly of Jacksonville, Fla., died Tuesday, April 1, 2003 at BJC Medical Center in Commerce.

She was born Jan. 31, 1921 in Hawthorne, Fla. and was the widow of Elmer Blanchard. She was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church of Jacksonville, Fla.

A graveside service was held Wednesday, April 2, at Roselane Cemetery. The Rev. Chad Thomas officiated.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Albert and Shirley Moore of Toccoa and a brother, Floyd Hall of Jacksonville and three grandchildren.

Whitlock Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.
