John Wendell White, 38

SWAINSBORO--Funeral for Mr. John Wendell White, 38 will be held Thursday, may 29, at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Southern Heritage Funeral Home. The Rev. Bunny Hudson will officiate. Burial will be Alamo Cemetery at 2 p.m.
He died Monday, May 26, in Medical College of Georgia.
Mr. White was born Jan. 30, 1965 in Jacksonville, Fla., the son of Harold Wendell and Beatrice Bozeman White. He was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church. He had resided in Swainsboro for the last 11 years moving from Eastman.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Judy Tanner White of Swainsboro; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Wendell White of Alamo; two brothers, Rickey White and Allen White, both of Alamo; three sisters, Mrs. Martha Breedlove of Alamo, Mrs. Kathy Harold of Milan and Judy White of Alamo; a number of nieces and nephews.
Southern Heritage has charge of arrangements.

Edna Lee Riner, 80

STATESBORO--Funeral for Edna Lee Riner, 80, will be held Thursday, May 29, 2003, at 3 p.m. at Sardis Primitive Baptist Church with Elder W.H. Durrence officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery with Elder Lavonne Anderson officiating.
She died Tuesday, May 27, 2003, at her residence.
A native of Chatham County, Mrs. Riner lived in several towns as she traveled with her husband during his ministry before retiring to Statesboro 10 years ago. She was a homemaker and member of Sardis Primitive Baptist Church of Emanuel County.
Survivors include her husband, Elder Ralph L. Riner Sr. of Statesboro; one daughter, Diane Groover of Statesboro; two sons, Ralph L. Riner Jr. of Lawrenceville and John W. "Bill" Riner of Albany; one sister, Margie Brigmond of Douglas; nine grandchildren and several great grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be grandsons and nephews.
Honorary pallbearers will be area Primitive Baptist Ministers and their wives.
Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home of Statesboro has charge of arrangements.

Barbara Ann Scott

SWAINSBORO--Funeral for Barbara Ann Scott was held Thursday, May 22, 2003, at 2:30 p.m. at Trinity Baptist Church with Dr. Charles Wiggins officiating. Burial was at Swainsboro City Cemetery.
She died Thursday, May 15, 2003, at St. Joseph Hospital in Savannah.
A native of Baxley, Miss Scott was the daughter of Carrie Scott and the late Willie Louis Cooke. She was formerly employed by City of Augusta as caretaker for 17 years. She joined Fort Grove Baptist Church after returning to Swainsboro.
Survivors include her mother, Carrie Scott, five sisters, Janice Jackson, Louise Johnson, Nettie Jordan, all of Swainsboro, Catherine Brown and Carolyn Brown, both of Bronson, Fla.; 10 brothers, Sammie Brown of Gainsville, Fla., Larry Brown of Pompano Beach, Fla., Willie Oliver Brown, Lamar Brown, both of Bronson, Fla. Willie J. Brown, James A. Brown, Randael Brown, Calvin Brown, Willie Albert Brown and Billy Jones, all of Swainsboro;
Pallbearers were family and friends.
Mosley's Funeral Home, Inc. had charge of arrangements.

Rev. Joseph Donald Way, 72

SALUDA, N.C.--Funeral for the Rev. Joseph Donald Way, 72, will be held Wednesday, May 28, 2003, at 2 p.m. at Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration of Saluda, N.C.
He died Sunday, May 25, 2003, at Lane Wing of Pardee Hospital of Hendersonville, N.C.
A native of Emanuel County, Rev. Way was the son of the late Josiah and Tempia Ocilla Walker Way.
Survivors include his wife, JoAnne Thompson Way; two sons, Peter Way of Saluda, N.C. and Arnold Medlock of Columbia, S.C.; one daughter, Justine Way of Chicago, Ill.; and five grandchildren.
McFarland Funeral Chapel of Tryon, N.C. has charge of arrangements.

Eschell E. Young, 77

EAST DUBLIN--Funeral for Eschell E. Young, 77, was held Tuesday, May 27, 2003, at 11 a.m. at Sammons Funeral Home Chapel of Soperton with Elder Jim Osborne and the Rev. Paul Douglas officiating. Burial with military honors was at Thigpen Cemetery in Rockledge.
He died Sunday, May 25, 2003.
A native of Laurens County, Mr. Young was son of the late James E. Young Sr. and Maggie Thigpen Young. He served in the Army during World War II and was a retired painter. He was also of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his wife, Mildred Jordan Young; two daughters, Ann McNeely of Swainsboro and Betty Sue Shaffer of Dublin; two sons, Gary Young of St. Augustine, Fla. and Jerry Young of Pasadena, Md.; three stepsons, J. A. Thomas of East Dublin, Bobby Thomas and Vic Thomas, both of Dublin; two stepdaughters, Melba Evans of Mt. Vernon and Gloria Keen of Lizella; two sisters, Ophelia Williford and Joyce Garner, both of Dublin; one brother; James Edward Young Jr. of East Dublin; 11 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, 10 step-grandchildren and 13 step-great-grandchildren.
Sammons Funeral Home of Soperton had charge arrangements.

Pauline Chapman Mason, 85

NEWNAN--Graveside services for Pauline Chapman Mason, 85, will be held Friday, June 6, 2003, at 2 p.m. at Swainsboro City Cemetery.
She died Tuesday, June 3, 2003, at her residence.
A native of Emanuel County, Mrs. Mason was a homemaker and lifelong resident of Swainsboro. She was preceded in death by her parents, Toomb and Elizabeth Chapman, brothers, Jay and Norman Chapman, sister, Ina Durden and husband, Harry Mason.
Survivors include one daughter, Linda Ambery of Newnan; one son, Mike Mason of Augusta; one sister, Bonnie Wimberly of Twin City; four grandchildren, one great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews.
Tomlinson Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Clarence Eugene "Gene" Black, 88

OAK PARK--Funeral for Clarence Eugene "Gene" Black, 88, was held Saturday, May 31, 2003, at 11 a.m. at Sammons Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Earl Warnock and the Rev. Glenn Purcell officiating. Burial was at Westview Cemetery of Soperton.
He died Wednesday, May 28, 2003.
A native of Johnson County, Mr. Black was the son of the late Benjamin Burton and Mary Frances Graham Black and lived in Jacksonville, Fla. 47 years before moving to Emanuel County four years ago. He was a retired automobile salesman and parts store owner/operator. He was of the Baptist faith. He is preceded in death by his son, Curtis Eugene Black.
Survivors include his wife, Audrey V. Atkins Black; one son, Jeff Black of Middleburg, Fla.; five daughters, Shirley Randall of North Augusta, S.C., Marilyn Roberts of Jacksonville, Fla., Debbie Cox of Yulee, Fla., Patty Coble and Judy Gay, both of Lyons; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren..

Rev. Elijah James Tann, 84

SWAINSBORO--Funeral for Rev. Elijah James Tann, 84, was held Friday, May 30, 2003, at 1 p.m. at Mt. Moriah A.M.E. Church with the Rev. James Day officiating.
He died Friday, May 23, 2003.
Born in Sycamore to the late Rev. John A. and Annie Nesmith Tann, Rev. Tann received his early education through Fitzgerald school system. He graduated high school in Tift County and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was ordained as a Methodist minister in 1947 and pastored several churches during his 56 year ministry. He is preceded in death by sisters, Mary Reynolds and Tiny Tann and brothers, Jim Tann, George Tann, Joseph Tann, John Tann and Samuel Tann.
Survivors include three daughters, Beatrice Woods of Atlanta, Laverne McCant of Moultrie and Linda Tann of Swainsboro; three sons, Ronald Tann of Atlanta, Earl Beck of Willingboro, N.J. and Timothy Tann of Swainsboro; two stepchildren, Christine Fluellen and Edward Thomas, both of Swainsboro; two sisters, Mamie Hood of Cleveland, Ohio and Lillie Bell Porter of Valdosta; one brother, Willie Tann of Dayton, Ohio; 17 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Mosley's Funeral Home, Inc. had charge of arrangements.

Malcolm "Mac" Lynch, 87

SWAINSBORO--Funeral for Malcolm "Mac" Lynch, 87, was held Saturday, May 31, 2003, at 11 a.m. at Piney Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. E.C. Clime officiating. Burial was at Green Cemetery.
He died Tuesday, May 27, 2003, at St. Joseph-Candler Hospital in Savannah after an extended illness.
A native of Emanuel County, Mr. Lynch was son of the late James and Lilly Green Lynch. He married Carrie Spann in March of 1940, was a farmer and school bus driver in Emanuel County for many years until his retirement. He was a member of Forts Grove Baptist Church and was a member of Piney Grove Gospel Chorus for several years. He was a member of Blue Lodge Sons Masonic Lodge of Wadley and served as Past Master for the Sons of Wadley #129, Past Assistant Deputy Grand Master of Louisville District #22, lifetime member of Swainsboro Consistory #312, Past Patron for the Daughters of Wadley Order of Eastern Star #487, Past High Priest of Holy Royal Arch #115 and District Inspector of Holy Royal Arch #115. He was also a member of Rountree Island Independent Benevolent Society, Johnson Grove Society and Piney Grove Fair and Honest Society.
Survivors include two sisters, Annie M. Ray and Pauline L. Cross, both of Savannah; and several other relatives.
Pallbearers were Sons of Wadley #129, deacons of Forts Grove, Piney Grove, Brinson Rock, Batts Grove and Rountree Island.

R. Frank Gay Sr., 91

HIGH POINT, N.C.--Funeral for R. Frank Gay Sr., 91, will be held Wednesday, June 4, 2003, at 11 a.m. at Lebanon United Methodist Church with the Rev. Roland Jones officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.
He died May 16, 2003, at High Point Regional Hospital after an extended illness.
A native of Emanuel County, Mr. Gay was the son of the late Ivey Diveger and Florrie Maybelle Gay. He graduated high school in Garfield and completed one year of college at Birmingham Southern University. He was employed 35 years with J.C. Penney Co. working in Knoxville, Tenn., Alexandria, Va., New York, Louisville, Ky. and Jacksonville, Fla. Upon retirement, he moved to High Point, N.C. and worked with real estate investment and the family's lumber companies, Hedgecock Builders and Supply. He was a member of Lebanon United Methodist Church serving on several advisory committees. He served as chair of High Point University's Board of Visitors, was a member of High Point Country Club and served on the board of the YMCA of Greater High Point. He was also an active Rotarian more than 40 years in Jacksonville, Fla. and High Point, N.C. He is preceded in death by his wife, Lois Estelle Hedgecock Gay.
Survivors include four children, R. Frank Gay Jr. of Kansas City, Mo., Patricia G. Nash of High Point, N.C., Dorothy Gay Darr of High Point, N.C. and J. Richardson Gay of Boston, Mass.; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild..
