Melvin Brady, 86

KITE--Funeral for Melvin Brady, 86, will be held Thursday, March 18, 2004 at 2 p.m. at Williams Chapel Baptist Church with Rev. Lamar Kersey and Rev. Allen Meeks officiating. Burial will be in Sardis Cemetery. He died Tuesday, March 16, 2004 at Johnson County Nursing Home.
Mr. Brady was a retired welder with Thermo King and was the oldest member of Williams Chapel Baptist Church. He was the son of the late John A. Brady and Kitzie Wheeler. He was the husband of the late Alice Rowland Brady.
Survivors include Mrs. Geraldine (Geri) Brady Shirey of Perry; two grandsons and one great-grandson.
Pallbearers will be Johnny Claxton, Jimmy Claxton, Ira Price, Billy Price, Larry Price and Kevin McDaniel.
Southern Heritage Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Mary Elizabeth Rosser

DULUTH--Funeral for Mary Elizabeth Rosser, 94, as held Tuesday, March 16, 2004 at Crowell Brothers Peachtree Chapel Funeral Home in Norcross. Burial was in Mt. Zion cemetery in Centre, Ala. She died March 14, 2004.
Mrs. Rosser was a homemaker and active member of Decatur First Baptist Church for over 50 years. She was a Red Cross volunteer at DeKalb General for 15 years. Her hobbies included gardening, cooking and ceramics. She was preceded in death by her husband, Isaac Vinson Rosser.
Survivors include three daughters, Marjorie Torrance of Swainsboro; Annette Lovelady of Duluth; and Jean Moody of Morganton; nine grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
Crowell Brothers Peachtree Chapel Funeral Home in Norcross had charge of arrangements.

Helen C. Kennedy, 72

MIDVILLE--Funeral for Helen C. Kennedy, 72, was held Tuesday, March 16, 2004 at Midville Baptist Church with Rev. M.F. Price officiating. Burial was in Midville City Cemetery. She died Sunday, March 14, 2004 at Jefferson County Hospital in Louisville after an extended illness.
Mrs. Kennedy was a native of Jefferson County and was retired with Creston Manufacturing in Swainsboro. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Kennedy Sr.
Survivors include a stepson, Mutt Kennedy of Midville; a stepdaughter, Dr. Sandra Kennedy of Augusta; and two brothers, James Lamar Clark of Michigan; and Jimmy Clark of Swainsboro.
Pallbearers were deacons of Midville Baptist Church.
Peebles-Curry-Durden Mortuary had charge of arrangements.

Oretha Y. Autry, 91

SWAINSBORO--Funeral for Oretha Y. Autry, 91, was held Monday, March 15, 2004 at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Tomlinson Funeral Home with Rev. Wayne DeFore officiating. Burial was in New Hope Cemetery. She died Saturday, March 13, 2004 at Glendale Nursing Home after a long illness.
Mrs. Autry was a native of Emanuel County and retired from Emanuel County School System. She was a member of Swainsboro First United Methodist Church.
Survivors include a son, Deron Autry of Swainsboro; a daughter, LaFaye Buchanan of Alpharetta; a sister, Willie Brown of Swainsboro; a brother, Ivey Youmans of Schnectady, N.Y.; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Tomlinson Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

Robert (Bob) Shaffiers, 81

CANOOCHEE--Funeral for Robert (Bob) Shaffiers, 81, was held Saturday, March 13, 2004 at Mt. Gilead Missionary Baptist Church at 1 p.m. with Rev. David Reddick officiating. Burial was in Mt. Gilead Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery. He died Friday, March 5, 2004.
Mr. Shaffiers was born Nov. 3, 1022 in Atlantic City, N.J. to the late Mr. and Mrs. Duncan Shaffiers. After he lost both parents, he was adopted by Ms. Katie Bowe and he moved to Miami, Fla. at an early age. He received a degree in business administration from Allen University. He worked with Boys Club of America, where he later became director. He worked at Broward County Sheriff's Department in Broward County, Fla. and Broward County School System.
He received a doctorate degree at Southern University and Man of the Year Award from Boys Club of America; Outstanding Service Award from the October Center; Outstanding Dedication and Service from Southern University Quarterback Club; Humanitarian Award and Appreciation for 30 years service from Children of the Community in 1997.
In 2001, he relocated to Garfield and joined Mt. Gilead Missionary Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Shaffiers of Garfield; children Tonya of Snellville; Cedric of Atlanta; Marie of Sandy Springs; Jayson, Otis and Rev. J.D. Polk of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; Sam of Garfield; a sister, Bernice of Miami, Fla.; two brothers, Emery and Floyd of Miami, Fla.; and 11 grandchildren.
Pallbearers were members of Emanuel County Institute ROTC. Honorary pallbearers were members of Mt. Gilead Missionary Baptist Church.
Mosley's Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

Sara Lydia Rich, 82

SWAINSBORO--Funeral for Sara Lydia Rich, 82, was held Saturday, March 13, 2004 at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Peebles-Curry-Durden Mortuary with Rev. Neil Stich officiating. Burial was in Swainsboro City Cemetery. She died Thursday, March 11, 2004 at her residence after an extended illness.
Mrs. Rich was a native of Emanuel County and a homemaker. She was a member of Hines Baptist Church and attended Hillcrest Baptist Church. She was the wife of the late Joe Rich.
Survivors include a daughter, Lucy Marsh Amerson of Swainsboro; a son, Bobby Gene Marsh of Swainsboro; a sister, Sindy Warfel of Lancaster, Pa.; a brother, John F. Rich Sr. of Tallahassee, Fla.; four grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Gary Rowland, Steve Powell, Terry Bell, Billy Cavanah, Ricky Conley, Julian Thigpen and Keith Claxton.
Peebles-Curry-Durden Mortuary had charge of arrangements.

Rufus Elliott Smith, 65

BOCA RATON, FLA.--Burial for Rufus Elliott Smith, 65, was held Friday, March 19, 2004 at 10 a.m. at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va. with full military honors. He died March 6, 2004 in Boca Raton, Fla. Preceding him in death was a son, Dale Smith.
Mr. Smith was a former resident of Swainsboro and graduated from Swainsboro High School in 1957. He resided in Boynton Beach, Fla. for the past seven years. He was born in Savannah, enlisted in the Navy in 1957 and retired in 1978 as an Operational Flights Weapons System instructor. Upon retiring from the military he worked as a systems analyst for Singer Link in Silver Spring, Md. and Aiken, S.C. for 10 years.
Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Smith of Boynton Beach, Fla.; a brother, Charles Ellis Smith and wife, Sue, of Macon; sons, Richard Elliott Smith and wife, Sherry, of Lexington, S.C.; Roger Collette of Sykesville, Md.; daughters, Elizabeth Crisp and husband, Michael, of Marriottsville, Md.; Linda Davis of Chincotoague Island, Va.; eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Northwood Funeral Home of West Palm Beach, Fla. had charge of arrangements.

Marie Hood, 86

KITE--Funeral for Marie Hood, 86, was held Friday, March 12, 2004 at 11 a.m. at Oak Chapel Baptist Church with Rev. Lamar Kersey, Rev. Fred Dunn and Rev. Bunny Hudson officiating. Burial was in Moxley Cemetery. She died Tuesday, March 9, 2004 at Emanuel Medial Center after a brief illness.
Mrs. Hood was born April 8, 1917 in Johnson County to the late James Alfred ad Bessie Harrell Jones. She was the wife of the late Joseph H. Hood. She was a homemaker and a member of Oak Chapel Baptist Church. She was a lifelong resident of Emanuel County.
Survivors include four sons, William Wadell Hood of Swainsboro; Charles E. Hood of Kite; Jerry Hood of Wrightsville; and Robert Hood of Kite; two daughters, Susie H. Coleman of Kite; and Frances Kitchens of Vidalia; a brother, Clifford Jones of N. Augusta; three sisters, Bernice Hood of Swainsboro; Virginia Blunt of Wrightsville; and Loretta Henry of Albany; 16 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were grandsons William Hood, Tim Hood, Lamar Coleman, Shannon Hood, Kevin Hood and Murray Kitchens.
Southern Heritage Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

Ammie Stroud Hudson, 85

SWAINSBORO--Funeral for Ammie Stroud Hudson, 85, will be held Wednesday, March 31, 2004 at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Peebles-Curry-Durden Mortuary with Elder Tommy Rountree officiating. Burial will be in Swainsboro City Cemetery. She died Sunday, March 28, 2004 at Emanuel County Nursing Home after an extended illness.
Mrs. Hudson was a native of Emanuel County and a homemaker. She was the wife of the late Wiliam Otis Hudson.
Survivors include a daughter, Vickie Bird of Stillmore; two sons, Sheldon Hudson and Charles Hudson of Swainsboro; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Bradley Singletary, Dwight Singletary, Roy Lin Stroud, Harold Claxton, Lewis Claxton, Allen Hudson, Kevin Bird and Pepper Fields.
Peebles-Curry-Durden Mortuary had charge of arrangements.

Luck Hendrix, 81

TWIN CITY--Funeral for Luck Hendrix was held Tuesday, March 30, 2004 at 5 p.m. at Bethel Primitive Baptist Church with Elder Tommy Rountree officiating. Burial was in Bethel Primitive Cemetery. She died Monday, March 29, 2004 at Statesboro Nursing Home.
Ms. Hendrix was born Oct. 17, 1922 in Emanuel County to the late Richard and Dora Ward Donaldson Jr. She was a member of Bethel Primitive Baptist Church.
Survivors include a son, Michael G. Hendrix of Red Oak, Texas; three sisters, Annie Laura Johnson and Era King of North Augusta, S.C.; and Mollie E. Barnett of Twin City; and four grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Louis Donaldson Sr., William Donaldson, Lewis Patrick, Elder Tommy Rountree, Don Rountree, Robert Harden, Bill Thornton and Mike Chestnut. Honorary pallbearers were Joe Deal, Jean Hart, Ron Iler, Larry Whitehead, Jason Whitehead, Bruce Jones, Perry Lee, Frank Schille and Buddy Whitehead.

Morris Shipes

GARFIELD--Graveside service for Morris Daniel Shipes will be held Wednesday, March 31, 2004 at 11 a.m. in Hebron Cemetery. He died Saturday, March 27, 2004.
Mr. Shipes was born in Columbia. S.C., was an inventory salesperson and a Baptist.
Survivors include his mother, Willie Vause Shipes of Garfield; a sister, Annie L. McCormack of Summerville, S.C.; and a brother, James Earl Thompson of Lynn Haven, Fla.
