Florria Roberts

SYLVANIA -- Florria Roberts, 99, died Oct. 7 at Syl-View Health Care Center.

She was a lifelong resident of Screven County and a homemaker. She was a member of Wesley Chapel and a past matron of Morning Light Chapter No. 284, Order of the Eastern Star.

SURVIVORS: two sons, Elder Wilbur Ealy of Richmond Hill and the Rev. L.T. Howell of Augusta; 22 grandchildren, including Guwan Tillman of Roosevelt, N.Y., and Doris Woodall of College Park; and several great-grandchildren.

WAKE: 7-8 p.m. today at Sylvania Funeral Home.

FUNERAL: 1 p.m. Wednesday at Wesley Chapel, burial in Big Oak Cemetery.

William Singleton

ST. HELENA ISLAND, S.C. -- William Singleton Sr., 52, died Oct. 8 at Beaufort Memorial Hospital.

He was born in Beaufort County and was a 1964 graduate of St. Helena High School. He was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War and a 17-year civil service employee.

He was affiliated with the Non-Stoppers Youth Association, where he coached Little League softball. He was a member of the Black Men United Organization and the Veterans Association.

SURVIVORS: his wife, Claretha Jenkins Singleton of St. Helena Island; two sons, William Singleton Jr. of St. Helena Island and Dwight Jefferson of Clarksville, Tenn.; a daughter, Alicia Mims of Bridgeport, Conn.; seven brothers, Edward T. Fell of Philadelphia, Admyer D. Fell Sr. of Burton, Herman Brown of Mississippi, Harold Brown of St. Helena Island, Henry Robinson of Port Royal, Lewis Robinson of Washington and Walter Ray Robinson of Apalachicola, Fla.; 12 sisters, Estelle Grady of Philadelphia, Mildred Francilleon of Stamford, Conn., Helen and Carolyn Brown, both of Boston, Theresa Lightburn, Virginia Robinson, Ella Robinson, Lula Burns and Janie Smith, all of Port Royal, Flora Robinson, Francis Aquah of Washington and Essie Mae Smalls of Coosaw Island; three grandchildren and other relatives.

WAKE SERVICE: 7-8 p.m. today at Marshel's Wright-Donaldson Home For Funerals, Beaufort.

GRAVESIDE SERVICE: 1 p.m. Wednesday in Beaufort National Cemetery.

Ronald J. Brown

Ronald J. Brown, 48, died Oct. 1 at Memorial Health University Medical Center.

He was born in Savannah and was an electrician with Savannah Electric. He was a member of St. James Baptist Church and served on Usher Board No. 1. He was a graduate of Tompkins High School.

SURVIVORS: his mother, Ora Lee Brown of Savannah; a sister, Bessie Brown Crawford of Savannah; and four brothers, Gussie E., Rubin L. and Raymond T. Brown, all of Savannah, and Harold J. Brown of Atlanta.

Ottis M. Alcorn Jr.

MIDWAY -- Ottis Madison Alcorn Jr., 80, died March 1 at Hospice Savannah.

He was born in Savannah and was an Air Force veteran of the Korean conflict. He was the owner and operator of Playland Nursery School for 37 years. He was a member of Flemington Baptist Church, AMBUCS Club and American Business Men's Association, where he served as the secretary and treasurer for six years.

SURVIVORS: his wife, Ann Reed Alcorn of Midway; a son and daughter-in-law, Ottis Madison Alcorn III and Sylvia C. Alcorn of Savannah; a daughter and son-in-law, Nancy A. Pinckard and Orie Pinckard of Waycross; a sister, Jule Joseph of Savannah; two granddaughters, Angela Ann Alcorn and Jessica Maria Alcorn, both of Savannah; and several nieces and nephews.

GRAVESIDE SERVICE: 3 p.m. Friday in Hillcrest Abbey Memorial Park.

Wanda Beasley

WAYNESVILLE -- Mrs. Wanda Beasley, 49, died Feb. 27 at Southeast Georgia Regional Medical Center in Brunswick.

She was born in Appling County and was a member of Northside Baptist Church in Brunswick. She was a 1968 graduate of Appling County High School and a 1994 graduate with an associate's degree in nursing from Brunswick College. She was a registered nurse employed by Gambro Health Care in Brunswick.

SURVIVORS: a daughter and son-in-law, Lisha Morgan and Todd Morgan of Waynesville; her father, Joseph G. Beasley of Baxley; a sister, Vicky Burns of Brunswick; two brothers, Joseph Terry Beasley of San Antonio and Steve Beasley of Baxley; and two grandchildren, Dallas Morgan and James Morgan, both of Waynesville.

FUNERAL: 11 a.m. today at Church of God, Waynesville, burial in Morgan Cemetery.

Katye W. Bolden

Katye Walker Bolden died Feb. 29.

She was born on Sapelo Island. At the age of eight, she joined the First African Baptist Church of Sapelo, and later joined St. John Baptist Church after arriving in Savannah. She served on the Deaconess Board, Chairperson of the Sick and Social Service Committee and as President of the June Birth Month Club. She was educated in the local schools of Sapelo and Savannah. She was a graduate of Culyer-Beach High School, Georgia State (Savannah State) and New York Universty with a master's degree in elementary education. She was employed for 33 years as a teacher in Chatham County. She was the widow of Leroy R. Bolden Sr.

SURVIVORS: sons, Leroy R. and Victor C. Bolden, both of Savannah; a daughter, Peggy Bolden of Savannah; a sister, Mary W. Lewis of Savannah; four grandchildren and nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Bessie B. Donahue

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Mrs. Bessie Lee Benton Donahue, 82, died Feb. 29.

She was born in Hampton County and was the widow of Joe David Donahue Jr. She was a member of Harrison Road Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School and helped with the Youth and GAs.

SURVIVORS: daughters, Jo Anne Eargle of West Columbia, Sara Glenn of Gaston, Dorothy Mills of Hopkins and Louise Donahue of West Columbia; sons, Joe David Donahue II of Gaston, David Manuel Donahue of Elgin, Jimmy Donahue of Hopkins, Albert Richard Donahue of Gilbert, Ronnie Donahue of Columbia and Charles Russell Donahue of Elgin; a sister, Adreen Elkins of Brunson; a brother, Phillip Benton of Brunson; 24 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Robert Duncan

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- Robert Duncan, 63, died Feb. 23 at Flagler Hospital.

He was born in Thunderbolt and lived in St. Augustine for 24 years. He worked as a commercial fisherman for Cracker Fishing Fleet Co., of Tampa, Fla., and Key West, Fla., and for Mike Cesaroni of Savannah.

SURVIVORS: his wife, Alice W. Duncan of St. Augustine; daughters, Michelle Duncan of Savannah and Nicole Johnson of Morrow; a son, Lawrence Duncan of Wright Town, N.Y.; his mother, Sally D. Grant of Savannah; sisters, Rose Lee Stoney, Anna Duncan and Rita Riley, all of Savannah; brothers, Arthur Duncan and Richard Mungin, both of Savannah; a godchild, Nikita Burns of St. Augustine; and a host of other relatives.

Milton R. Halbert

Milton Rayner Halbert, 72, died Feb. 28 at Memorial Health University Medical Center.

He was born in Crooksville, Ohio, and lived in Savannah for the past 21 years. He was an Army veteran of World War II and was employed with the U.S. Department of Labor, Wage and Hour Division for 35 years, retiring as area director in 1990. He was a communicant of St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church.

SURVIVORS: his wife, Rosemary Welsh Halbert of Savannah; four daughters and three sons-in-law, Rebecca and Thomas Oellerich of Atlanta, Susan and Richard Cooper and Rene Halbert, all of Savannah and Brenda and Edward Sitzman of Dahlonega; a brother, Roger Halbert of Jacksonville, N.C.; nine grandchildren, a niece and two nephews.

FUNERAL: will be private.

Henry A. Highland

Henry Arthur Highland, 75, died March 1 at home.

He earned a bachelor of science degree from Washington College, a master of science degree and a doctorate degree from the University of Maryland. He was a research entomologist with the United States Department of Agriculwre for 40 years and held a patent on an insect monitoring device. He was a charter member of the Chatham County Exchange Club and a member of the English Speaking Union, the Retired Officers Association and the Bluffron Historical Society. He was an Army veteran of World War II, retired as a lieutenant colonel.

SURVIVORS: his wife, Dolores Roche Highland of Savannah; a daughter, Victoria Highland Guenther of Savannah; three sons, Henry Brett Highland of Nokomis, Fla., Andrew Cory Highland of Peiham, N.Y., and Emmett Roche Highland of Cherry Hill, N.J.; a brother, John Davidson of Preston, Md.; a sister, Wilsie Arbeene of Medford, Mass.; seven grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

MEMORIAL SERVICE: 2 p.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Joseph J. Burke

Joseph James Burke, 92, died May 9 at Savannah Rehabilitation Center.

He was born in Plymouth, Pa., and lived in Savannah for many years. He attended LeHigh University in Scranton, Pa., and worked in the Pennsylvania coal mines before moving to Savannah. He worked with Union Camp Corp. for more than 30 years as a civil engineer.

He was a communicant of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and a former member of the Knights of Columbus.

SURVIVORS: his wife, June Kline Burke of Savannah; two sons, James J. Burke of Glennville and Joseph John Burke of Oxford, Ala.; two stepsons, Neal L. Blair of Raleigh, N.C., and William R. Blair of Savannah; five daughters, Dorothy Inglisa of Jacksonville, N.C., Patricia Williamson of Houston, Ruth Wellington of Montgomery, Ala., Jeannine Meredith of San Jose, Calif., and Mary Strane of Marietta; a brother, Walter Burke of Nanticoke, Pa.; 14 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

VISITATION: 6-8 p.m. today at Hubert C. Baker Funeral Home, Hodgson Memorial Chapel.

ROSARY SERVICE: 7 p.m. today at Hubert C. Baker Funeral Home, Hodgson Memorial Chapel.

GRAVESIDE SERVICE: 11 a.m. Friday in Greenwich section of Bonaventure Cemetery.
