Pearl Ruth Jones Durrence, 84

Pearl Ruth Jones Durrence, 84, died Monday, October 6, 2008, at Glenvue Nursing Home under the care of Georgia Home Health Care Hospice. The Tattnall County native had lived in this area all of her life and was a homemaker and member of Watermelon Creek Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Horace Durrence.
She is survived by her children, Geraldine Kirkland of Hawkinsville, and Gary and Brenda Durrence of Claxton; eight grandchildren; 15 great - grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Thursday, October 9, 2008, at 3:00 p.m., at Watermelon Creek Baptist Church, with Reverend Steve Miller and Reverend Charles Fiveash officiating. The body will lie in state for one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers were Michael Kirkland, Jeff Kirkland, Brian Durrence, Kyle Kirkland, Andy Durrence and Tanner Fiveash.
Remembrances may be made to Watermelon Creek Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, Highway 144, Glennville, GA, 30427.

Diane Humphrey, 57

Diane Humphrey, 57, of Cobbtown died Tuesday, September 30, 2008, at Meadows Regional Medical Center in Vidalia. She was born in Baltimore, MD, and moved to Cobbtown in 1969. Diane was a cosmetologist and attended the Cobbtown United Methodist Church. She became disabled 10 years ago due to a stroke and was preceded in death by her father, George Humphrey
Survivors are her mother, Arlene Humphrey; a brother, Danny Humphrey; a sister, Karen Humphrey; a niece and two nephews, Lacey Humphrey, Jason Humphrey and Britt Humphrey, all of Cobbtown.
Funeral services were held Friday, October 3, at Kennedy Funeral Homes, Cobbtown Chapel, with Rev. Tony Smith officiating. Burial followed in the Sunlight Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Harry Martin, Kermit Martin, Tony Sewell, Stevie Sewell, Wesley Coley and Brian Kennedy.
Kennedy Funeral Homes, Cobbtown Chapel, was in charge of the arrangements.

John D. (Johnny) Kicklighter, 55

John D. (Johnny) Kicklighter, 55, passed away Thursday, October 2, 2008, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Savannah. Johnny was born in Savannah, August 29, 1953 to Jean D. and Doris Beasley Kicklighter. He was a graduate of Woodard Academy in Atlanta class of 1971 and Mercer University in Macon class of 1975 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in economics. He graduated from the Georgia Banking School in Athens in the class of 1979. Johnny entered the banking field immediately upon graduation from college and held various positions and served as President and CEO of First Citizens Bank for many years. He completed Georgia Banker Association School of Banking and Auditing School and American Institute of Banking Principles of Banking. He graduated form the School of Banking of the South at Louisiana State University in 1982. He was the grandson of the founder of First Citizens Bank and former State Superintendent of Banks, the late John C. Beasley and grandson of the late C.W. Kicklighter, former president and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Glennville Bank and Trust Company. Johnny’s parents held the positions of President and Chairman of the Board of First Citizens Bank for many years. He was a member of Glennville First Baptist Church, the Georgia Forestry Association, Glennville Boosters Club, Sigma Nu Fraternity, Glennville Jaycees and was an avid outdoorsman.
He is survived by his wife, Jeanette S. Kicklighter of Glennville; daughters, Tiffany Kicklighter of Glennville and Scarlett Livingston of Cobbtown; son Shannon Yarbrough of Glennville; sister, Jeanie Anderson of Glennville; grandchildren, Cheyanne Yarbrough, Chasity and Chase Dubberly; niece, Renee and Keith Dixon; nephew, Lt. Col. Ron and Julie Anderson and several other relatives.
Funeral services were held Sunday, October 5, 2008, at the Chapel of Brannen - Kennedy Funeral Home with Reverend Kenny Edwards officiating. Entombment was held in Glennville Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.
Pallbearers were Wayne Collins, Wayne Dasher, Larry McLeod, Lang Rogers, Dennis Strickland and Hugh McCullough. Honorary pallbearers were Directors of First Citizens Bank, Terry Barnard, Lawrence Durham, Bobby Collins, Quinton Rush, Walt Dasher, Billy Conley, Joe McGovern, Richard Philips, Richard Cheatham, Danny Key, Barry Clower, Howard Kaufold, Randy Wilson, Michael Dasher, Brent Walker and Robert Dasher.
Remembrances may be made to American Cancer Society, c/o Jeanette DeLoach, P.O. Box 188, Reidsville, GA 30453.

Ernest “Bill” Riner, 58

Mr. Ernest “Bill” Riner, age 58, passed away Saturday, October 4, 2008, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. The Emanuel County native had lived in Bryan County many years moving to Reidsville twenty - five years ago. He was employed with Claxton Poultry as a supervisor. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Riner.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley L. Riner of Reidsville; a daughter and son - in - law, Wendy and Rick Melton of Reidsville; a son and daughter - in - law, Trey and April Riner of Glennville; a step - daughter, Jeannie Herb of Reidsville; four step - sons, J.J. Herb and John Herb Jr., both of Hinesville, Scott Herb of Kansas and David Sheldon of Reidsville; three sisters, Pat Morris of Adrian, Ernestine Hodges of Pembroke, and Darlene Rogers of Reidsville; twenty - one grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 8, 2008, from the Chapel of Bradley Anderson Funeral Home with Rev. William Prince and Rev. Joe Wiggins officiating. Interment followed in the Union Baptist Church Cemetery near Swainsboro.
Pallbearers were William Teston, John Herb Jr., J.J. Herb, Jason Teston, Charlie Iddins, Rick Melton, Roland Yarbrough, and Justin Stanfield.
Bradley B. Anderson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Lawson Rudolph Smith, 80

Lawson Rudolph Smith, 80, died October 2, 2008, at his home in Glennville. He was born in Broxton, GA, on November 4, 1927, to Samuel Lawson and Lillie Mae Smith. At the age of 17, he joined the Merchant Marines to travel the world. He was commissioned in the Navy Reserves where he was a Lt. JG during World War II. Upon his honorable discharge from the Navy, he went to the University of Georgia and earned a degree in Agricultural Engineering and retired from Civil Service in October 1993. Lawson was an avid UGA football fan and spent many afternoons cheering their victory. He loved to ride the roads of the Deep South to see the countryside and visit places he had never been. He loved to fish and farm and spent many hours teaching his children and grandchildren to love his world. He felt he had the best girl in the world with his wife, Betty, and dearly loved her cooking and the loving ways she made his life special. He was a devout Christian and a member of Glennville First Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Betty Carol Day Smith of Glennville; children, Betty Dolph Solomon and Mike of Douglas, Jon Lawson Smith and Phyllis of Glennville, Wanda Lynn Quinn and Curtis of Fairhope, AL and Pamela Carol Berry of Douglas; brothers, James Olvin Smith of Broxton and Samuel Vyrlin Smith of Macon; seven grandchildren; one great - grandchild; several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Funeral services were held Sunday, October 5, 2008, at the Chapel of Sims Funeral Home in Douglas. Burial followed in Broxton City Cemetery.

Evelyn Conner Barrow, 86

Mrs. Evelyn Conner Barrow, 86, died Monday, September 29, 2008, at Community Hospice House in Vidalia. The Candler County native lived most of her life in Tattnall County. She was a homemaker and a member of the Claxton Primitive Baptist Church. She was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother who loved her friends and neighbors. When time permitted, she loved to fish. She was preceded in death by a son - in - law, Eugene Bryson.
She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Warnell Barrow of Collins; four daughters and sons - in - law, Sherry Jean Bryson of Lyons, Vera and Glen DeLoach of Mendes, Linda and Robert Colson, Melba and Jimmie Powell, all of Vidalia; seven grandchildren and their spouses, Wanda and Jimmy Gibbs, Barry and Melanie Bryson, Dane DeLoach, Daniel and Jessica DeLoach, Derrick and Iris DeLoach, Brian and Heather Colson and Heather Leigh Williams; six great - grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, October 1, 2008, at 2:00 p.m., at Kennedy Funeral Homes, Cobbtown Chapel, with Elder Jimmy Haire officiating. Burial followed in the Anderson Cemetery. Grandsons served as pallbearers.

Kathryn Durrence Baxter, 82

Kathryn Durrence Baxter, 82, passed away Friday, September 26, 2008, at her residence after a long illness. The Tattnall County native had lived in Tattnall and Long counties all of her life. She was a wonderful homemaker, loving mother, grandmother and a member of Ella Grove Baptist Church.
She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Hillis G. Baxter of Ludowici; daughter and son - in - law, Kay and Larry Lagasse of Ludowici; sons and daughters - in - law, Geral and Reba Baxter and Revis and Betty Baxter, all of Ludowici; sister, Joyce Todd of Claxton; grandchildren, Brittney and Clint Baxter and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Sunday, September 28, 2008, at 2:00 p.m., from the Chapel of Brannen - Kennedy Funeral Home, with Reverend Dempsy Golden officiating. Burial followed at Rye Patch Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Mike Swindell, Edward Rich, Larry Weathers, Reggie Todd, James Smith and David Golden.

Lois Wilson Durrence, 90

Lois Wilson Durrence, 90, passed away Sunday, September 28, 2008, at Glenvue Nursing Home under the care of Ogeechee Area Hospice. The Tattnall County native, along with her husband, owned and operated Durrence’s Texaco Service Station for many years. She was a homemaker and a member of Harmony United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hershel Durrence; brother, Earl Wilson and grandson, Ricky Durrence.
She is survived by her sons and daughters - in - law, Merriell and Dana Durrence and Mike and Faye Durrence, all of Glennville; daughters and sons - in - law, Dianne Cribbs of Glennville and Ruinette and Joe Williams of Waycross; sisters, Mildred (Midge) Durrence of Glennville and Reba Kennedy of Reidsville; grandchildren, Kim and Keith Anderson, Rita Sikes, Hershel Durrence, Robbie and Cheryl Durrence, Christy Jo and Shawn Jordan, Kelly and Jeff Odom, Brandi and Sammy Perkins and Robin and Adam Kirby; fourteen great - grandchildren; to great - great - grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, and a special caretaker, Racine Johnson.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, October 1, 2008, at 11:00 a.m., from the Chapel of Brannen - Kennedy Funeral Home, with Elder Jim Bowen officiating. Burial followed in Harmony United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Herschel Durrence, Robbie Durrence, Jesse Odom, Lawrence Durham, Shawn Jordan and Randy Wilson.

George Revis Knight, 72

George Revis Knight, 72, passed away Thursday, September 25, 2008, at Candler Hospital in Savannah. The Tattnall County native had lived in Glennville most of his life. He was retired from Claxton Poultry after 30 years of service. He was a Korean War Army Veteran and a member of Northside Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois Knight; parents, G.R. and Dooley Knight; brothers, Ellis and Cecil Knight.
He is survived by daughters and sons - in - law, Gina and David Cammack, Donna and David Smith, Michelle and Tim Meyer, Julie and Stan Elrod and Viniece and Steven Kirkland; sons and daughters - in - law, Earl “Tal” and Karla Kicklighter and Douglas Stubbs; nine grandchildren; niece, Paula Douthit and special cousin, Ann Speight.
Funeral services were held Saturday, September 27, 2008, at 10:30 a.m., from the chapel of Brannen - Kennedy Funeral Home, with Reverend Oscar Rowe, Jr., officiating. Burial followed in Beards Creek Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Joe Brewton, Billy DeLoach, Jackie Griner, Johnny Griner, Bill Harper and Don Kicklighter.
