Mary Schumaker

Mary Janette Schumaker, 98, of Fort Madison, died at 3:10 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2002, at Muscatine Care Center in Muscatine. She had been in failing health for the past year.

Born March 12, 1903, in Pacific Junction, she was the daughter of George and Pearl Stevens Kendall. She married William Martin Schumaker on April 13, 1921, in Fort Madison.
Mrs. Schumaker was a homemaker and had lived in Fort Madison since 1921. She helped her husband for 40 years at their family store, Bill's Grocery, in Fort Madison.

She was of the Methodist faith and a member of Fort Madison Senior Citizens.

Survivors include three daughters, Ida Sprenger and Nancy Hyhouse, both of Fort Madison, and Betty Rampy of Springfield, Va.; one daughter-in-law; one sister, Ida Newberry of Newton, Kan.; 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, two sons, two brothers, one sister and two grandsons.

Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. Sunday at Barr Memorial Chapel in Fort Madison, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m.

The funeral for Mrs. Schumaker will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the chapel, with the Rev. Elliott George officiating. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery in Fort Madison.

A memorial has been established for the Muscatine Care Center. Contributions may be made at the chapel.

Maurice Smith

Maurice A. Smith, 65, of Burlington, died Thursday, Jan. 31, 2002, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington. Arrangements are pending at Hass Funeral Home.

Randall Parrish

Randall W. Parrish, 53, of Burlington, died Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2002, at his home. Services are pending at Lunning Chapel.

Vernon Ayers Jr.

Vernon Ayers Jr., 58, of New London, died at 8:06 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2002, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born Jan. 16, 1944, in Anacortis, Wash., he was the son of Don Vernon Sr. and Mary E. McQuitty Ayers.
He married Deborah Snowden in February 1986, in New London.

Mr. Ayers was a tool and dye maker. He worked at Fruehauf for 15 years and at General Electric for four years.

He was of the Christian Science faith.

He enjoyed spending time with his family, restoring cars, shortwave radios, fishing, being outdoors and reading.

He was a certified minister with his church.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Cyrus and Ahban Ayers, both of New London; three daughters, Lynn Raue of Gerald, Mo., and Dora and Iris Ayers, both of New London; one grandson; and his mother, Mary Huff of New London.

He was preceded in death by his father and his stepfather.

His body has been cremated. There will be a private family inurnment at a later date.

The funeral for Mr. Ayers will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Christian Science Society, 206 N. Jefferson St., Mount Pleasant.

A memorial has been established.

Wesley Gillham

Wesley David "Doug" Gillham, 43, of Mendon, Ill., died at 8:35 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, 2002, in Lima, Ill. Funeral arrangements are pending at Lamporte Funeral Home in Warsaw, Ill.

Clayton Worley

Clayton Worley, 100, of Columbus Junction, died Wednesday, May 30, 2001, at Colonial Manor Care Center in Columbus Junction, after an extended illness.

Born Dec. 28, 1900, in Conesville, he was the son of Loran and Clara Robinson Worley. He first married Dorothy Beliel. She preceded him in death. He married Alice VanWinkle Arington on July 17, 1946, in Kahoka, Mo. She died May 23, 1984.
Mr. Worley farmed in the Columbus Junction area and worked for 14 years for the Rock Island Railroad.

Survivors include five sons, Verle and Lester, both of Washington, Iowa, Kenneth of Burlington, Rayford of Jefferson City, Mo., and Jim of Iowa City; one daughter, Doris Mineart of Fairfield; one stepdaughter, Donna Beason of Ankeny; one brother, Milton of Arcadia, Ind.; two sisters, Wilma Wilson of Gravois Mills, Mo., and Anita Truitt of Sallisaw, Okla.; 36 grandchildren; 54 great-grandchildren; and 17 great-great-grandchildren.

Besides his wives, he was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, four sisters and one son.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Stacy-Lewis Funeral Home in Columbus Junction.

The funeral for Mr. Worley will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Columbus City Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for Colonial Manor Care Center.

Harve Dodds

Harve Dodds, 86, of Stockport, died at 4:20 p.m. Thursday, May 31, 2001, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. Arrangements are pending at Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua.

Hazel Athey

Hazel Irene Athey, 94, a lifelong resident of Hamilton, Ill., died at 12:25 p.m. Wednesday, May 30, 2001, at Memorial Hospital in Carthage, Ill.

Born Aug. 6, 1906, in LaBelle, Mo., she was the daughter of Porter and Martha E. Allen McCracken. She married Lehman Campbell Athey on Dec. 27, 1930, in Hamilton.
Mrs. Athey was a 1925 graduate of Hamilton High School and of Gem City Business College in Quincy, Ill.

She was a lifelong member of the First Christian Church and Order of Eastern Star, Pocahontas Chapter, both of Hamilton. She was active with the Hamilton Senior Center and enjoyed keeping up with current events. She also enjoyed gardening and traveling with family and loved animals, especially dogs and horses.

Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. today at Lamporte Funeral Home in Hamilton.

The funeral for Mrs. Athey will be at 11 a.m. today at the funeral home, with the Rev. Jerald Bown officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery in Hamilton.

A memorial has been established for the First Christian Church's formal front entrance.

Mervil Eder

Mervil Ted Eder, 78, of Keokuk, died Tuesday, July 31, 2001, at his home. Arrangements are pending at Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk.

Ruth Lawson

Ruth S. Lawson, 76, of rural Carthage, Ill., died at 4:06 a.m. Tuesday, July 31, 2001, at her home.

Born May 9, 1925, in Hancock County, Ill., she was the daughter of Alfred L. and Abbie Koontz Wear. On Dec. 24, 1944, she married Dale "Red" Lawson.
Mrs. Lawson first worked for CIPS then for Marine Trust Co. of Carthage for more than 25 years.

She attended Franklin Middle School, graduated from Carthage High School and attended Gem City Business College.

She was active in Women's Club, United Methodist Church in Carthage, where she was a Stephen Minister, and served as a board member of Memorial Hospital in Carthage. She and her husband also were past recipients of Carthage High School Fans of the Year.

Survivors include her husband; one son, Randy Lawson of Burnside, Ill.; two daughters, Claudia Scott of Macomb, Ill., and Laurie Green of Burnside; three grandchildren; four brothers, Rolland, Ed and Ross Wear, all of Carthage, and Keith Wear of Fort Collins, Colo.; two sisters, Doris Belshaw of Carthage and Annice Neally of Oldsmar, Fla.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one infant sister and one granddaughter.

Visitation will begin at 3 p.m. Thursday at Neiser-Printy Funeral Home in Carthage, where the family will receive friends from 6 until 9 p.m.

The funeral for Mrs. Lawson will be at 10 a.m. Friday at United Methodist Church in Carthage, with Pastor William Pyatt officiating. Burial will be in Moss Ridge Cemetery in Carthage.

Memorials have been established for Hancock County Hospice and Carthage Senior Center.

Thomas Francis

Thomas Francis, 54, of Eagle Grove, died Tuesday, July 31, 2001, at his home. Arrangements are pending at Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk.

Margaret White

Margaret E. White, 91, of Danville Care Center in Danville, died at 4 a.m. Friday, Aug. 31, 2001, at the care center.

Born Sept. 1, 1909, in Fort Madison, she was the daughter of Edward and Etta Mae McKeever Simmons. She married Theodore F. White on Feb. 18, 1928, in Fort Madison. He died in February 1992.
Mrs. White worked as a desk clerk for many years at the Lincoln Hotel in Fort Madison.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Fort Madison. She loved cats, dancing and spending time with her grandchildren.

Survivors include one son, Gary F. White of West Burlington; three grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, one sister and one brother.

The funeral for Mrs. White will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Hass Funeral Home, with the Rev. Patrick J. Hilgendorf officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Fort Madison.

A memorial has been established for the Alzheimer's Association.

Denzil Poggemiller

Denzil E. Poggemiller, 72, of West Burlington, died Sunday evening, Sept. 30, 2001, at River Hills Village in Keokuk. Arrangements are pending at Lunning Chapel.

Iris Binnis

Iris M. Binnis, 97, of Danville, died Sunday, Sept. 30, 2001, at Danville Care Center. Arrangements are pending at Elliott Chapel in New London.

Bernard Bosley

Bernard W. Bosley, 85, of Donnellson, died Wednesday evening, Oct. 31, 2001, at Donnellson Health Center. Funeral arrangements are pending at Hofbauer Funeral Home in Donnellson.

Doris Schroeder

Doris Evelyn Schroeder, 90, of Great River Medical Center Klein Center, died at 4:51 p.m. Monday, Oct. 29, 2001, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born Nov. 6, 1910, in rural Augusta, she was the daughter of Archie Oral and Lena Amelia Peters Groth. She married Henry Bernard "Bud" Schroeder on Jan. 31, 1938, in Sioux City. He died July 16, 1972.
Mrs. Schroeder was a homemaker. She was a past resident of West Point and a long-time volunteer at Burlington Medical Center and the Klein Unit.

She was a member of Sts. John and Paul Catholic Church in Burlington and the most important thing in her life was her family.

Survivors include two daughters, Mary Ann Buettner of Monroe, Wis., and Betty Schroeder of Burlington; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and one granddaughter.

The rosary will be recited at 4 p.m. today in Prugh's Chapel and a Christian wake service will be at 7 p.m., with the Rev. Patrick Hilgendorf officiating. The family will receive friends following the wake service until 8:30 p.m.

The funeral for Mrs. Schroeder will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in West Point, with the Rev. David Wilkening officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in West Point.

A memorial has been established for Great River Medical Center Klein Unit.
