CONROY - Kenneth D. Roberts was born icon September 6, 1940 in Iowa Township of Iowa County near Williamsburg, Iowa, the son of Raymond H. And Mary Taylor Roberts. He attended Sumner #4 elementary school near Marengo, graduated from Iowa Valley High School in 1958 and attended Cornell College in Mt. Vernon. Kenneth was united in marriage to Diana L. Jurgens on January 30, 1971 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids. As a young man, he was a member of the Fairview Zippers 4 - H Club (1951 - 1959) where his projects were beef and light horse classes. Kenneth was leader of the Hilton Happy Hustlers 4 - H club for 9 years (1984 - 1992) and was named an Honorary 4 - H member in 1992. He served as Horse Superintendent with the Iowa County Fair for 25 years. Kenneth was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church of Williamsburg and the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed his family, especially his two grandsons, socializing over coffee at the Landmark and Colony Point and showing his beloved horse Dynasty's Major. Kenneth died on Saturday, May 29, 2004 at the University Hospital in Iowa City after a brief illness at the age of 63 years, 8 months and 25 days. He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Diana; two sons: Tim Roberts and wife Cara of Williamsburg and Kevin Roberts of Manhattan, Kansas; a daughter Kay Roberts of Conroy; two grandsons, Austin Roberts and Jacob Barnes; his mother Mary E. Roberts of Marengo; a brother Don Roberts and wife Karen of Cedar Falls; a brother - in - law LaVern Jurgen and wife Mary of Vista, California; five nephews and three nieces. Kenneth was preceded in death by his father Raymond in 1977; father - in - law and mother - in - law Kenneth(1980) and Gladys(2001) Jurgens; two nephews: Kenneth Jurgens (1980) and Leon Jurgens (1969) and a sister - in - law Donna Roberts in 1992. Funeral services are set for 10:30 am, Wednesday, June 2, 2004 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Williamsburg with Fr. Joseph Roost officiating. Burial is in the St. Mary Catholic Cemetery. Visitation is at the Uhlmann - Powell Funeral Home on Tuesday from 2:00 - 8:00 pm with a Wake Service at 6:00 pm followed by a Knights of Columbus Rosary. Memorial fund is for the American Diabetes Association and the Kidney Transplant Unit at the University of Iowa.

Helen Grace, Wiggins

Helen Grace Wiggins was born icon on October 7, 1902, west of North English, IA, a daughter of John Earl and Isabelle Jane Gilchrist Wiggins. When she was a year old she became a victim of Polio which left her crippled. She went through life not thinking she was handicapped. She attended Grant Country School and graduated from North English High School in 1920. Helen took Normal Training courses in high school and received her teachers certificate. She started her teaching career in 1921. She taught 10 years at Porter School in Keokuk County, 12 years at Gritter School in Iowa County, and 4 more years at other schools. Helen also worked a few summers while teaching at the English Valleys Creamery in North English. She later took a full time office position and worked there 22 years. She retired in 1969. Helen was a member of the North English Christian Church where she taught Sunday School classes and helped with Vacation Bible School for many years. She was also a life - time member of the Order Of The Eastern Star and served on committees and held many offices. Helen put forth an effort to succeed in whatever she attempted, felt she had lived a good life and followed the motto 'Life is what we make of it, it always has been, it always will be.' Helen became a resident of the English Valley Care Center in North English in May 2001. She died there on Monday, May 24, 2004 following a short illness. She lived 101 years, 7 months and 17 days. She is survived by 4 nieces: Shirley Tucker, Helen Marie Davis, Pam Fox & Frances Christian; and 3 nephews: Lynn Kolosik, Stanley Kolosik & Vance Kolosik. Helen was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Mildred Kolosik and Gladys Lockridge, a niece Merna Britten and a nephew Lyle Kolosik. Celebration of Life services will be held at the Powell Funeral Home in North English at 10:30 AM on Wednesday, May 26, 2004 with Pastor Don Ridenour officiating. Visitation will be held at the funeral home in North English on Tuesday, May 25th from 5 PM until 8 PM. An Order of the Eastern Star service may be held at 7:30 PM Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in the North English Cemetery.

Hopp, Earl

Williamsburg - Earl Herman Hopp was born icon November 17, 1920 near Williamsburg, Iowa, the son of William H. and Rose Wille Hopp. He attended Trinity Lutheran School in Conroy. He was baptized December 14, 1920 and confirmed in 1934 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Conroy. Earl served in the Army in WWII. He was united in marriage to Lillian Maas September 25, 1948 at the St. Paul Parsonage in Williamsburg. Earl has been a life long resident of the Iowa County area. He worked Roehrkasse Meat Locker for 29 years and at the Colony Haus Motor Inn at Little Amana for 6 years until retiring in 1985. He was an avid fisherman, enjoyed playing cards, caring for his granddaughters and tinkering around with carpentry. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and the Iburg Poulson VFW Post #8797 in Williamsburg. Earl died Saturday, May 22, 2004 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City after a brief illness at the age of 83 years, 6 months and 5 days. He is survived by his wife Lillian; two sons: Gary (Barb) Hopp and Randy ( Marcia) Hopp; a daughter: Carolyn Hopp all of Williamsburg; two granddaughters: Haley and Ashley Hopp; a brother: Herbert Hopp of Ladora and sister: Alice Kleinmeyer of Williamsburg. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Helen Hopp, brothers: Clarence, Wilfred, Alfred, Otto and Elmer. Celebration of Life Service will be Tuesday, May 25, 2004 at 10:30 a.m. in the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Williamsburg. Rev Carl Cloeter will officiate. Burial will be in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday from 5 to 8 P.M. at the Uhlmann - Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Williamsburg. With a VFW service at 7:00 p.m.

Dean Richard Vandenburg was born icon May 15, 1928 in Humeston, Iowa the son of Lester and Gladys (Tait) Vandenburg. He has lived his entire life in southeast Iowa, and has lived in Wellman since 1999. He worked as a truck driver and at Perfex. Dean died on Thursday, May 20, 2004 at Parkview Manor in Wellman following a long illness at the age of 76 years. Dean is survived by 5 children - Wanda Nau and fiance' Lee White of Kalona; Richard Dean Vandenburg and wife Melissa of Kalona; Kathy Gerdes and husband Steve of Ainsworth; Linda Adam and husband Nick of Wellman; Peggy Strickler and husband Ron of Kinross; 15 grandchildren; and 2 brothers - Gerald "Skip" Vandenburg of Cedar Rapids and David Vandenburg of Humeston. Dean was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son; a sister Margaret; and 3 brothers - Donald, Delbert and an infant.

Kathleen JoAnne Calvin was born icon on June 9, 1930, in Washington County, IA, a daughter of Harry and Bertha Emde Gardner. She graduated from North English High School and attended Ottumwa Heights College for 3 years. On June 22, 1957, Kathleen married icon Laurence L. Calvin in North English. She taught in rural schools for 2 years and in North English for 5 years. She also worked 8 years at Holden Foundation Seeds in Williamsburg and 16 years at Amana Refrigeration, retiring in 1994. Kathleen attended St. Joseph Catholic Church and was a member of the North English Community Club. She enjoyed reading, playing cards and spending time at the community center. Kathleen died following an extended illness at her home in North English, on Saturday, May 15, 2004. Kathleen lived 73 years, 11 months and 6 days. She is survived by sons Charles L. Calvin (Alana) of North English, IA; John W. Calvin (Jan) of North English, IA; and a daughter Patricia J. Lehrman ( Daren) of Stanwood, IA; a grandson Brady Lehrman; and brothers: Wayne Gardner of Iowa City, IA; Harry Gardner Jr. & Burrell Gardner both of Toledo, IA; and Francis Gardner of Stoughton, WI. Kathleen was preceded in death by her parents and husband Laurence in November 1996. Funeral services will be held at 10 AM, Wednesday May 19, 2004, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in North English with the Rev. David Hitch officiating. Burial will be in the North English Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 11, 2004, at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation service in North English from 4 PM to 8 PM, with a wake service at 7 PM. In lieu of flowers the family has requested that memorials be made in Kathleen's name to Hospice of Iowa County.

Heitshusen, Walter

Williamsburg - Walter Herman Heitshusen was born icon January 30, 1924 near Williamsburg, Iowa, the son of Herman F. and Anna Baack Heitshusen. He was baptized March 16, 1924 and confirmed April 10, 1938. He attended Immanuel Parochial School. Walter served in WWII in the Philippines Island where he was wounded and Honorable discharged receiving the Purple Heart Medal. He was united in marriage to Esther Schreiber April 11, 1948 at Grand Center Lutheran Church near Iowa Falls, Iowa. The couple lived and farmed near Williamsburg until 1987 when they moved to Williamsburg. Along with farming Walter also engaged in raising Turkeys. Walter was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, serving on various offices through out the years. He served many years on the District Church Extension Board and enjoyed the past years doing volunteer work. Walter died Thursday, May 13, 2004 at his home of complications of cancer at the age of 80 years, 3 months and 13 days. Walter is survived by his wife Esther of 56 years; five children: Dale (Karol) Heitshusen of Coppell, Texas, Donna (Phill) Hardin of De Soto, Texas, Carol (Ken) Maca of Staplehurst, Nebraska, James (Deb) Heitshusen of South Amana and Gary (Amy) Heitshusen of Sharpsburg, Georgia. 11 grandchildren: Erin Lange, Audra, Brian and Christie Hardin, Andy and Jeremy Maca, Breanne, Amanda and Josh Heitshusen, Eric and Matthew Heitshusen; a great grandchild Madison Lange; a brother: Edgar (Alice) Heitshusen of South Amana; two sisters: Ethel (Richard) Newkirk of Williamsburg and Luella (James) Stone of Des Moines, Iowa and a sister - in - law: Doris Heitshusen of Luzerne. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers: Erwin, Willard and Herbert. A Celebration of Life Service will be Monday, May 17, 2004 in the Immanuel Lutheran Church near Williamsburg with Rev. Richard Meyer officiating. Burial will be in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday, May 16, 2004 at the Uhlmann - Powell Funeral Home in Williamsburg from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Memorials are for Lutheran Bible Translators, Lutheran Interparish School and Concordia Seminary at St. Louis.

Elizabeth "Lizzy" Kempf was born icon Wednesday, July 1, 1908 the daughter of Lewis and Laura (Baker) Groff. She attended Greene Center rural school. On February 22, 1931 she was united in marriage to Harvey S. Kempf in rural Wellman. She has lived her entire life in the Wellman community where she was a homemaker. She was a member of the Franklin United Methodist Church. Lizzy died on Sunday, May 2, 2004 at Parkview Manor in Wellman following a brief illness at the age of 95 years. Lizzy is survived by a son - Marlin Kempf and wife Linda of Iowa City; a daughter - Laura Miller and husband Paul of Kalona; 5 grandchildren - Marla Johnson and husband Jeff of Iowa City; Monte Kempf of Colorado Springs, Colorado; Tom Miller of Kalona; Tim Miller and wife Dee of Kalona; Ann Miller of Itasca, Illinois; and 3 great grandchildren - Delaney and Campbell Johnson and Mya Miller. Lizzy was preceded in death by her parents; 4 brothers - William Groff, Harold Groff, Milford Groff, Donald Groff; and 2 sisters - her twin Mary Fisher and Loise Wade.
A memorial fund has been established for the Parkview Manor Chaplaincy Program.

Genevieve Rose Merck was born icon on October 13, 1928, in Sharon Center, IA, a daughter of George M. and Alice Heim Ludwig. She attended and graduated from Tiffin High School in 1947, and in 1949 graduated from Westmar College in LaMars, IA. Gen taught first grade for two years at the North English Elementary school in North English, IA. On June 16, 1951, Gen was married icon to Arthur L. Merck in Tiffin, IA. Since their marriage they have lived on a farm in the Deep River community. Gen was a member of the Community Church where she taught Sunday School and Bible studies, and was involved with the Women's Mission Circle. She was a godly wife, mother and grandmother, and loved to serve her family. Gen's passion was sewing and she was a very talented seamstress. She assisted with the farming and enjoyed operating the combine. She also enjoyed her flowers and gardening. Gen died from a sudden brain hemorrhage on on Friday, April 30, 2004 at University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City. She lived 75 years, 6 months and 17 days. She is survived by her husband Arthur Merck of Deep River, a son David Merck (Nedra) of Ada, MI; daughters, Diana Henderson (Bryan) of Simpsonville, SC; Joyce Wilkins (Brian) of Waverly, IA; Julie Holt (Jeff) of Urbandale, IA; and Jolene Biberstine (John) of Berne, IN. Also surviving are 14 grandchildren; 2 sisters: Nona Walker of Tiffin, IA and Phyllis Ludwig of Davenport, IA; and a brother George Ludwig of Winchester, VA. Gen was preceded in death by her parents, and brothers Dean and Robert Ludwig. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM Tuesday, May 4, 2004, at the Community Church near Deep River. Pastors David Merck and Brian Wilkins will officiate. Visitation will be held on Monday, May 3, 2004 at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North English from 4 PM to 8 PM. Burial will be in the Community Cemetery.

Shawn Lee Butterbaugh was born icon Thursday, February 3, 1983 in Iowa City, Iowa the son of Alice Yoder and Ronald Butterbaugh. He graduated from Mid - Prairie High School in 2001. He was currently employed by Lear Corporation in Iowa City. He enjoyed riding 4 wheelers, working on cars, shooting pool, and hunting. Shawn died from injuries suffered in an automobile accident on Friday, April 23, 2004 near Cosgrove at the age 21 years. Shawn is survived by his mother - Alice Yoder and husband Marvin of Wellman; his father - Ronald Butterbaugh of Wellman; special friend Charlene West of Wellman; a step brother - Travis Yoder of Wellman; a step sister - Missy Yoder of Keota; paternal grandfather - Dairld Butterbaugh of Wellman; step grandfather - Bud Crabell of Akron, Indiana; and step grandmother - Wilma Yoder of Wellman. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandmother - Yevonne Butterbaugh; maternal grandparents - Jessie Crabell and Everette Haines; and step grandfather - Pete Yoder.
A general memorial fund has been established.

Orson Keith Kirkpatrick was born icon near North English, IA, on January 29, 1926, a son of Orson Flory and Esther May Miller Kirkpatrick. He graduated from North English High School in 1943. Keith served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World war II. He was awarded the Purple Heart after being wounded in Iwo Jima. On September 10, 1949, he was united in marriage to Marilyn Darlene Ruegsegger at the United Methodist Church in Batavia, IA. Keith has been a lifelong resident of North English. He hauled cream for the North English Creamery for 10 years and worked at Amana Refrigeration for 16 years. Keith worked for 7 years in housekeeping and as a mail clerk at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Student Services, retiring in 1988. He was also co - owner of Kirkpatrick Variety in North English for over 30 years. Keith was a member of the North English United Methodist Church, the VFW, a former member of the IOOF and the Thrift Shop Board of Directors. Keith died on Tuesday, April 20, 2004 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City, IA, following a long illness. He lived 78 years, 2 months and 22 days. He is survived by his wife Marilyn of North English, IA; two daughters: Helen E. Grimes of Cedar Rapids, IA, and Mary K. Anders (Dennis) of Superior, WI; 4 grandchildren: Michele E. & Michael K. Grimes, Michael J. & Aaron W. Anders; 3 sisters: Evelyn Reynolds of Sigourney, IA; Fern Baugh of Hayden Lake, ID; and Dorothy McClellen of Wellman, IA. He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant son Robert A. Kirkpatrick, and sisters Maxine Baugh and Roxine Ruegsegger. Celebration of Life Services will be held at 10:30 AM Thursday, April 22, 2004, at the North English United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Mary McAtee officiating. Visitation will be from 5 pm until 7:30 PM Wednesday, April 21, 2004 at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North English. Burial with Military Rites will be in the Wellman Cemetery, Wellman, IA. A memorial fund has been established for the North English United Methodist Church.
