Virginia M. Hochstedler was born icon December 30, 1938 the daughter of Velda Potter and Noble King. She graduated from Tiffin High School in 1957. On November 24, 1957 she was united in marriage to Kenneth D. Hochstedler at the Kalona United Methodist Church. They have lived their entire married icon life in the Kalona community where she was a homemaker. Virginia was a member of the Kalona United Methodist Church, a lifetime member of the National Miniature Horse Association, the Iowa Miniature Horse Association, and the Mercy Services Breath of Fresh Air Group. Virginia loved to do gardening and landscaping in her free time. Virginia died on Saturday, April 17, 2004 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City from complications of emphysema at the age of 65 years. Virginia is survived by her husband Kenneth D. Hochstedler of Kalona; 2 sons - Randy Hochstedler and wife Linda of Marion; Kevin D. Hochstedler and wife Beth of Iowa City; and a daughter Michelle Bates and partner Ann Camblin of Davenport; 6 grandchildren - Cory, Chelsie, and Bryce Hochstedler of Marion; Kennedy Hochstedler of Iowa City; Amanda and Meridyth Bates of Kalona; and a brother - Carson E. Potter of Oxford.
A Memorial Fund has been established for Mercy Services Breath of Fresh Air Group.

Sandersfeld, Reinhold (Reiny)

Williamsburg - Reinhold A. (Reiny) Sandersfeld was born icon April 12, 1915 near Homestead, Iowa, the son of J. Henry and Matilda Maas Sandersfeld. He attended St. John's Parochial School. Reiny was united in marriage to Paula Beer June 27, 1947 at St. John's Lutheran Church near Homestead. He was engaged in farming with his father and later was employed as a carpenter with Wetjen and Swartzendruber Construction in Amana until retiring in 1980. They lived on the farm near Homestead until moving to Williamsburg in 1966. He was a life long member of St. John's Church where he served in various capacities including the Men's Choir and as Benevolent Secretary for 23 years. Reiny also sang in the Amana Mens Chorus, Iowa County bicentennial Chorus and at many weddings. Reiny died Saturday, April 17, 2004 at the Williamsburg Care Center after an extended illness at the age of 89 years and 5 days. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Paula of Williamsburg; three children: Kathryn (Gerry) Barr of Marion, Susan (Robert) Wims of Knoxville, Iowa and Mark (Rosann) Sandersfeld of Solon; seven grandchildren: Emily (Shawn) Fritcher of Claremont, Minnesota, Molly Barr of San Francisco, CA, Mary Beth and Bob Wims both of Knoxville, Jennifer (George) Erwin of Cedar Falls and Lindsay and Natalie Sandersfeld of Solon; two great grandchildren: Izak and Nora Beth Fritcher of Claremont, MN. A sister Pauline Stohlmann of Williamsburg. Reiny was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Ernst Sandersfeld. The family extends its deepest gratitude to the staff at the Williamsburg Care Center for their love and support. A Celebration of Life Service will be Wednesday, April 21, 2004 at 10:30 a.m. in the St. John Lutheran Church near Homestead, Iowa. Rev. Wayne Woolery will officiate. Burial will be in the St. John's Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday, April 20, 2004 at the Uhlmann - Powell Funeral Home in Williamsburg from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m..

Dorothy A. Kerr was born icon on September 1, 1917, near Ollie, IA, a daughter of Charles and Maggie Glays Williams. She attended No. 10 Country School through the eighth grade and graduated from Ollie High School. She sang for school and church programs from age 5, and learned to play the violin while in grade school. She played in the Ollie High School Band and learned to play the tuba during this time. She played six instruments - the organ, accordion, violin, tuba, Hawaiian guitar and harmonica, several of which were self taught. Dorothy also played on the girls' basketball team. Dorothy became the wife of Homer S. Kerr on January 2, 1937, in Ottumwa, IA. She was a member of the English River Church of the Brethren. While Homer did custom farm work, Dorothy was the main chore girl - taking care of hogs, cows and the chickens. She was also an avid gardener and did a lot of canning and freezing of fruits and vegetables. Her main concern was always her family. She kept up with the family weekly by letters as well as writing often to extended family and friends. Dorothy was a clerk at the grocery store in South English for several years. Homer and Dorothy went on frequent trips - to Virginia, Kansas, Maryland, Florida, California, Mississippi, Minnesota, Canada, and Alaska visiting family and friends. Dorothy learned at an early age to embroider and in later years, crocheting. Any free time was spent doing embroidery and crocheting for gifts. She made over 100 baby afghans, most of which were gifts, and sent them all over the world. She also did embroidery on pillowcases and dish towels, made hooked rugs, did cross stitching on multiple items which included baby bibs and hand towels. Dorothy was also an avid reader and enjoyed crossword puzzles and other word puzzles. Dorothy died on Sunday, April 11, 2004, at the University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City, IA at the age of 86 years, 7 months, and 10 days. She is survived by her husband Homer S. Kerr of South English; 4 daughters: Phyllis (Willie) Coffman and husband Terry Greene of South English, IA; Jo Ann Horner and husband Bill of Larned, KS; Judith (Jude) Krehbiel and husband Doug of Newton, KS; Sarah Jane (Janie) Miller and husband Gary of North English, IA; and a son John S. Kerr and wife Nancy of Webster, IA. Also surviving are 14 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, a brother John Williams and 2 great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM Wednesday, April 14, 2004 at the English River Church of the Brethren near South English. Pastor Beth Miller will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation service in North English on Tuesday, April 13, 2004, from 4 PM to 8 PM. A memorial fund has been established for the English River Church of the Brethren, Keokuk County Ambulance and American Diabetes Association.

HARPER - William V. 'Bill' Besser, age 72, of Harper, died Thursday, April 8, 2004, at the University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City following a lengthy illness. Bill was born icon February 18, 1932, in Harper, to William T. and Madeleine (Striegel) Besser and graduated from St. Elizabeth High School. He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. On April 30, 1955, Bill married icon Jeanette M. Hammen at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Harper. A lifelong resident of Harper, Bill worked for the Natural Gas Pipeline for 31 years as a truck driver and large equipment operator. He was a member of Holy Trinity Parish - St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Harper and the Knights of Columbus, where he served as a Past Grand Knight. Bill enjoyed cars, fishing and his beloved family. Survivors include his wife: Jeanette of Harper; one daughter: Rebecca Sue Frederick and husband Craig; three grandchildren: Keary R. Quigley and wife Chantae, Kristi L. Quigley and Nicole D. Frederick; one step - grandson: Daniel J. Frederick; one sister: Mary Ann Lewis and special friends Paul and Lee Jaeger. He was preceded in death by his parents. Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, April 12, 2004, at Holy Trinity Parish - St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Harper with Rev. Marty Goetz officiating. Burial will be at St. Elizabeth Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Sunday, April 11, 2004, at the Powell Funeral Home in Keota, where there will be a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m, followed by a rosary. A general memorial fund has been established. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service is handling the arrangements.

SIGOURNEY - Gladys O. 'Westie' Utterback, age 97, of Sigourney, died Monday, April 5, 2004, at the Keokuk County Health Center in Sigourney. Westie was born icon April 2, 1907 in Knoxville, Iowa, to Harley C. and Bertha (Summy) West. She graduated from high school and the School of Cosmetology in 1925. On July 28, 1929 she married icon Hubert Utterback at her parents' home in Linden, Iowa. In 1927 Westie moved to Sigourney, where she operated a beauty shop until 1959. She and Hubert also operated a manufacturing company which made soft plastic items for sale to beauty shops. Westie was a member of the Sigourney Christian Church and T.T.T. She enjoyed playing golf and bridge and wintering in Tucson, Arizona. Survivors include her sister - in - law: Ruth West of Tucson, Arizona, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Hubert in 1973, one brother, N. Harold West and one sister, Veva White. Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 8, 2004, at the Sigourney Christian Church with Rev. Jim Bringman and Rev. Frances Baumert officiating. Burial will be at Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Sigourney A memorial fund has been established for the Keokuk County Health Center Activities Fund. Reynolds - Powell Funeral Chapel and Cremation Service in Sigourney is handling the arrangements.

Williamsburg - Ida Marie Halverson was born icon May 24, 1907, in York Township, Iowa County, Iowa, the daughter of John Henry and Maria “Mary” Dorothea Baack Schwarting. She was baptized June 23, 1907 by Rev. Barnovsky at Immanuel Lutheran Church. In March 1915, she moved with her parents to a farm east of Conroy, Iowa. Ida attended Trinity School in Conroy and was confirmed on March 28, 1920 by Rev. R. Kabelitz. Ida was united in marriage to Arnold Marvin Halverson on November 29, 1929 in Conroy by Rev. E. Hempel. She has worked at the Conroy Grocery Store, Conroy Telephone Company and in 1956 moved to Williamsburg and worked at the Me Too Grocery Store, Dr. Dougherty, Glandorf Appliances and Schanz Furniture. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Conroy. Ida became a resident at Colonial Manor in Amana in 1999. She died Tuesday, August 3, 2004 at Colonial Manor after short illness at the age of 97 years, 2 months and 10 days. Ida is survived by two daughters: Marjean (Norman) Glandorf and Joan Enochson all of Williamsburg; 7 grandchildren: Susan Glandorf, Steven (Rhonda) Glandorf, Brenda Glandorf, Linda (Orie) Yoder, Jerry Enochson, Julie (Ray) Herrick and Brian Enochson and 10 great grandchildren: Amy Herrick, Kate Herrick, Curtis Enochson, Molly Enochson, Anthony Enochson, Tia Glandorf, Tara Glandorf, Laura Glandorf, Kimberly Enochson and Jesse Yoder; a sister Adella Brockshus of Homestead and a step sister Adele Maas of Monticello. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Arnold; infant grandson Stuart James Glandorf; three brothers: Vernon, Edmund and Arnold Schwarting; two sisters: Edna Brockshus and Esther Stanerson and two step brothers: Allan and William Schwartin. and a son - in - law Keith Enochson. Celebration of Life Service will be10:30 a.m. Friday, August 6, 2004 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Conroy. Pastor Gary Sears will officiate. Burial will be in the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday at the Uhlmann - Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Williamsburg. Memorial are for the Trinity Lutheran Church or Lutheran Interparish School. Casket Bearers: Gerald Schwarting, Don Koch, James Cerveny, Richard Stanerson, Gary Hinrichs and Keith Halverson. Organist: Shirley Madoerin, Congregational Hymns: Rock of Ages, Abide O Dearest Jesus, O Savior Precious Savior and A Pilgrim and A Stranger.

WILLIAMSBURG - Lilly Eleanor Peirce was born icon Saturday, April 2, 1921 near South Amana, Iowa the daughter of Herman and Anna (Von Ahsen) Lorenz. She was baptized on May 2, 1921at Immanuel Lutheran Church and confirmed on March 25, 1934 at St. Paul Lutheran Church. She attended country school for a year, then Immanuel Lutheran and St. Paul Lutheran School in Williamsburg graduating from Williamsburg High School in 1939. Lilly attended Paris Beauty Academy in Cedar Rapids graduating in 1940. She then went to work for Lee’s Beauty and Barber Shop, until 1941 when she purchased Starlite Beauty Shop. Lilly was united in marriage to Leighton Walter Peirce on November 28, 1941 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Williamsburg. Lilly continued her business until Leighton returned home from the service in the U.S. Army in 1945. The couple lived on the farm thru out their married icon life, Leighton died December 1975 and in 1977 Lilly moved into Williamsburg. She was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church where she was active in the Women’s Guild and the Fellowship Club; taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. During WWII she was active with the American Red Cross. Lilly died on Sunday, August 1, 2004 at her home in Williamsburg following a sudden illness at the age of 83 years. Lilly is survived by 3 children - Sharon Peirce of Columbia, Missouri; Richard Peirce and wife Jeanette of Williamsburg; Phyllis Morrison and Dan Morrison of Sigourney; 5 grandchildren - Douglas Peirce and wife Melinda; Kristen Lane and husband Chad; Angela Putnum and husband Rob; Jamie Morrison and wife Bonnie and Jeremy Morrison; 5 great grandchildren - Garrett Peirce; Amanda Peirce; Payton Lane; Trenton Lane; and Riley Morrison; a sister - Leona Meyer of Urbana and two sister - in - laws: Florence Dietrich of Williamsburg and Ruth Stevens of Sumner. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and 2 brothers - Edwin Lorenz and Anton Lorenz a sister Elsie Teggatz.. A Celebration of Life Service will be 10:30 a.m.Wednesday, August 4, 2004 at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Williamsburg, Pastor Carl Cloeter will officiate. Burial will be in the St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 P.M. at the Uhlmann - Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Williamsburg. Memorials are for the St. Paul Lutheran Church or the American Cancer Society. Casket Bearers: Stan Teggatz, Dwight Lorenz, Steve Meyer, Loren Stevens, David Dietrich, Steve Dietrich, Todd Dietrich, Dale Kisling and Jim Simmons. Organist is Karin Winwood, Vocalist: Bill & Rita McDonald and Ed & Sandra Ficken will sing Go in Love and the congregational hymns are How Great Thou Art and I’m but a Stranger Here, Heaven is My Home.

Cloyce Arlan Neis was born icon on April 4, 1933 near South English, IA, a son of Cloyce Oral and Imo Price Dearing Neis. He moved to West Chester with his family and graduated from high school there in 1950. Cloyce served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was united in marriage to Mary Elizabeth Davis on April 15, 1956 near Sigourney, IA. They made their home in Cedar Rapids before moving back to South English in 1981. Cloyce worked 26 years as a buyer for Amana Refrigeration and for 14 years owned and operated Mary’s Place in South English. He was a member of the Scotland Presbyterian Church near South English, was on the South English volunteer fire department, served on the South English City Council for 6 years and served as Mayor of South English for over 5 years. Cloyce was also a member of the American Legion. Mary preceded him in death in December 1993. Cloyce has lived near Montezuma, IA since October. He died there of cancer on Saturday, July 31, 2004 at the age of 71 years, 3 months and 27 days. Cloyce is survived by a daughter Janice Genung of South English, IA; 4 grandchildren: Holly Brockert, Bethany Genung, Jesse Molyneux and Daryl Glydewell. And a brother, Ronald Neis of Cedar Rapids, IA. Also surviving is his companion Mary Awtry of Montezuma and her family: Jackie (Gary) Black, Janice (Ron) Haworth and Jim (Maureen) Awtry. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Mary and a sister Shirley Neis. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, August 4, 2004, at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North English with Rev. Jim Bringman officiating. Burial will be in the South English Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 3, 2004 from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. A memorial fund has been established for the South English Fire Department and the Q.R.S.

Whitmore, Irene

Irene L. Whitmore was born icon on December 20, 1915 in Corydon, IA, a daughter of George and Minnie Hixenbaugh Finley. She married icon Marion W. Conner Sr. On December 29, 1933. They were later divorced. Irene worked in Cedar Rapids, IA, and while there, met Walker H. Whitmore. They were married icon on July 25, 1954, in Las Vegas, NV. They made their home in California where Irene worked a number of years for Deluxe Check Printing. When walker retired in 1976, they moved to Millersburg, IA. Irene attended the Methodist Church and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and the American Legion Auxiliary. She became a resident of the English Valley Care Center in North English, IA in August 2000. Irene died following a long illness on Wednesday, July 28, 2004, at the English Valley Care Center. She lived 88 years, 7 months and 9 days. Irene is survived by two daughters: JoAnn Ronnenberg (Bill) of Cedar Rapids, IA; Joyce Stone (Bill) of Austin, TX; a son: Marion Conner (Shirley) of Millersburg, IA; a step - daughter Joyce Thompson (Richard) of Las Vegas, NV; a sister: Juanita Cox of Fraizer, Park, CA; many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren; Also surviving is a sister - in - law Lillian Finley of Coralville, IA. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Walker in September 2003; five brothers: Roy, Dean, Pearl, Charles and Lloyd Finley; and a step - son Jim Whitmore. Graveside services will be held at 3:00 PM Sunday, August 1, 2004 in the Millersburg Cemetery, Millersburg, IA. Hospice Chaplain Anna Bradshaw will officiate. There will be no visitation. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service, North English, is in charge of arrangements.

Johnston, Wade D.

Wade Dean Johnston was born icon on November 10, 1923 near North English, IA, a son of Charles Leroy and Bertha Maude Bair Johnston. He grew up in the North English community and attended North English High School. Wade was united in marriage to Marjorie Maxine Lockridge on December 20, 1941 in Kirksville, MO. They farmed in the Green Valley community until moving into town in 1954. Wade served as the Marshall for the city of North English for 4 years and as custodian at the North English High School for 28 years. He retired in 1986. Wade was baptized in 1947 and was a lifelong member of the Christian Church. He was also a member of the Odd Fellow Lodge from 1952 until it closed. Wade loved spending time with his family, hunting and fishing. He was an avid baseball fan, especially the Chicago Cubs. Wade died of cancer at his home in North English on Saturday, July 24, 2004. He lived 80 years, 8 months and 15 days. He is survived by his wife Marjorie of North English; daughters: Margo Redlinger (Cletus) of Iowa City, IA; Pamela Thodos of Iowa City, IA; sons Ronald Johnston of Atlanta, GA; Francis L. Johnston (Joan) of Washington, IA; 13 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; 4 step grandchildren and 8 step great grandchildren; sisters: Tressie Morrison and Elma Morrison, both of North English, IA; He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers: Eldon, Vern, Cloyd and Ward Johnston; sisters: Ila Lown, Grace Morrison, Vivian Bair and Treva Wilhite; and grandchildren Michael Johnston and Philip Knebel. Celebration of Life Services will be held 10:30 AM, Wednesday, July 28, 2004 at the North English Christian Church. Pastor Don Ridenour will officiate. Burial will be in the North English Cemetery. Visitation will be held at Powell Funeral Home in North English on Tuesday, July 27th from 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM, with the family being present from 4 PM to 8 PM. A memorial fund has been established for the North English Christian Church; Hospice of Iowa County and the North English First Responders.
