Edna Brenneman Niles was born icon February 9, 1914 in Johnson county near Kalona, Iowa the daughter of Irwin and Mattie (Miller) Brenneman. She graduated from the Hesston Academy in 1941 and from Goshen College in 1949. She taught at a country school for several years. On May 27, 1952 Edna was united in marriage to Eauve L. Niles in Kalona. They lived in Iowa City where she worked as a dietitian for the V.A. and Mercy Hospitals. After Eauve died on August 20, 1962, Edna moved to Muscatine and worked as a dietitian for Muscatine General Hospital. Edna returned to Kalona in 1967, where she owned and operated the Kalonial Fabric Shop until 1972. She was a member of the Kalona Mennonite Church, former member of the American Dietetic Association, and was a charter member of the Kalona Lioness Club. She was an excellent seamstress, and a perfectionist at quilting. Edna died on Saturday, June 26, 2004 at the Pleasantview Home in Kalona from complications of Alzheimer's at the age of 90 years. Edna is survived by a sister - Leona Yoder and husband L. David of Kalona; a brother - Harold H. Brenneman and wife Olive of Ephrata, Pennsylvania; a niece - Lucy Ann Conley and husband Ottis oc Crockett, Kentucky; and 2 nephews - Leon Yoder and wife Suzanne of Alpharetta, Georgia; and Keith Brenneman and wife Robin of Akron, Ohio. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and a nephew Lon Brenneman.
A memorial fund has been established for the Pleasantview Home Alzheimers unit.

SIGOURNEY - Lottie Smeaton, age 98, of Sigourney, died Friday, June 25, 2004, at the Keokuk County Health Center in Sigourney, following a lengthy illness. Lottie was born icon December 8, 1905, in Keokuk County, to Chris and Mary (Hens) Brothersen and received her education at Johnson country school and Sigourney High School. In 1927 she married icon Ferdinand Smeaton in Delta. The couple lived and farmed in Keokuk County. Lottie was a member of the Keswick United Methodist Church and enjoyed fanciwork, embroidery and tatting. Survivors include one son: Paul Smeaton of Sigourney and two sisters: Betty Heisdorffer of Sigourney and Twyla Stroud and husband Raymond of Longmont, Colorado. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband: Ferd in 1968 and one sister: Margaret Brothersen. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 29, 2004, at the Reynolds - Powell Funeral Chapel in Sigourney with Rev. Frances Baumert officiating. Burial will be at Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Sigourney. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Monday, June 28, 2004, at the Reynolds - Powell Funeral Chapel in Sigourney. A general memorial fund has been established. Reynolds - Powell Funeral Chapel and Cremation Service in Sigourney is handling the arrangements.

Grimm, Cecil F.

Cecil Franklin Grimm was born icon January 17, 1921, near Millersburg, Iowa, a son of Charles and Iva (Kearney) Grimm. He graduated from Millersburg High School in 1939. On September 4, 1945 he married icon Loretta Kiracofe in Cedar Rapids. The couple lived and farmed in the North English area. He was a member of the Community Church in rural Deep River and was a church trustee for several years. Cecil enjoyed playing baseball and softball in his younger years and watched baseball on television until his death. His other great interest and love was watching his two grandchildren in their athletic endeavors. Cecil died following a lengthy illness on Wednesday, June 23, 2004, at the English Valley Care Center in North English. He lived 83 years, five months, and six days. Survivors include his wife, Loretta Grimm of North English; two sons, Elmer Grimm and wife Dolores of North English, and Daryl Grimm and special friend Susie of Colfax; two grandchildren: Janel Grimm - Burgess and husband Timothy of Lansing, Michigan and Jeffrey Grimm of North English; one great grandson - Eddie Burgess of Lansing, Michigan and a sister, Dorothy Wiebold of Kansas City, Missouri. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters - Blanche Ross and Mildred Frazier. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, June 26, 2004, at the Community Church. Burial will be at Community Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Friday, June 25, 2004, at the Powell Funeral Home in North English.

Stohlmann, Pauline
July 18, 1912 - June 22, 2004

Williamsburg–Pauline Amalia Stohlmann was born icon July 18, 1912 near Homestead, Iowa, the daughter of J. Henry and Johanna Mathilda Maas Sandersfeld. She grew up in the Homestead community, and was baptized August 18, 1912 and confirmed March 28, 1926 at St. John's Lutheran Church near Homestead. Pauline was united in marriage to Clarence H.F. Stohlmann April 4, 1940 at St. John's Lutheran Church. After their marriage the couple moved to Williamsburg. Pauline was a home maker and helped on the farm with her husband. She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Williamsburg where she was very active in the Women's Guild, 50 years of service in the Altar Guild, sang in the choir, taught Sunday School and was in the Fellowship Club. Pauline also volunteered at the Lutheran Interparish School, was a Charter member of the 76ers Garden Club and a member of the Iowa County Histrical Society. In her spare time she enjoyed sewing, working with crafts, reading and quilting. Pauline died Tuesday, June 22, 2004 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City after a short illness at the age of 91 years. Pauline is survived by two daughters: Lois (David) Werner of Williamsburg and Gloria (Gregory) Misbach of Filer, Idaho; six grandchildren: Paul (Cari) Werner, Brenda Werner, Bethann Werner, Lyle (Andrea) Misbach, Neal Misbach and Kendra Misbach; two great grandchildren: Brady Werner and Logan Misbach ; a sister in law Paula Sandersfeld of Williamsburg. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband in 1989, two brothers: Ernst and Reinhold Sandersfeld. Celebration of Life Service will be Friday, June 25, 2004 at 10:30 a.m. in the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Williamsburg. Pastor Carl Cloeter will officiate.
Burial will be in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery near Williamsburg.
Visitition will be Thursday from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. At the Uhlmann - Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Williamsburg.
Memorials are for Lutheran Interparish School .

Riess, William H.

William Henry Riess was born icon on September 15, 1914, on a farm near North English, IA, the son of Henry and Letha Cheney Riess.
He attended Boltz country school through the eighth grade and graduated from North English High School in 1932. Bill was a lifelong farmer.
He lived in the same house 63 years until moving into North English in 1977.
Bill was united in marriage to Frances Wilson Gilmore on January 16, 1937 in Galesburg, IL.
He was a member of the North English Christian Church and had served as a member of the English Valleys School Board.
He worked as an electrician for many years and wired many homes in the North English community.
His greatest joy was his family and grandchildren.
Bill died of cancer at his home on Sunday, June 20, 2004. Bill lived 89 years, 9 months and 5 days.
He is survived by his wife Frances of North English; a son William H. Riess Jr.
And wife Beverly of Clive, IA; two daughters: Sandra Hyde and husband Dexter of Cedar Falls, IA; Ramona Hall and husband John of North English, IA; five grandchildren: Julie Creeden and husband Paul of Cedar Falls, IA; Michelle Swanson and husband Chad of Cedar Falls, IA; Jennifer Lundberg and husband Tim of Pasadena, CA; Sarah Dickson and husband Lance of Mt. Vernon, IA; Chris Hall and wife Jamie of North English; 9 great grandchildren; a brother Arnold Riess and wife Alyce of Cedar Rapids, IA; and a brother - in - law Sam Levy of San Diego, CA. William was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Ivan, Elmer, Layton, and Lloyd ( an infant); and sisters Carmen Levy and Eltje Riess (an infant). Memorial Celebration Of Life Services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, June 23, 2004 at the Powell Funeral Home in North English, with the Rev. Mary McAtee officiating.
Visitation will be held from 12:30 PM until service time at 2:00 PM on Wednesday.
Family graveside services will be held in the North English Cemetery.
A memorial fund has been established for Hospice of Iowa County.

Nicholls, Herbert

Interment: Wellman Cemetery
Herbert W. Nicholls was born icon December 2, 1919 in Macon County, near Decatur, Illinois to Earl O. And Myrtle Ellen (Leonard) Nicholls.
He grew up in Decatur, Illinois and graduated from high school there.
On February 16, 1941, he married icon Betty Ann Walther in St. Charles, Missouri.
The couple moved to Garner, Iowa in 1947.
Herbert served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
They then moved to Thornton, Iowa before making their home in Wellman in 1953.
Herbert raised turkeys for Baxter Freese at Rolling Acres for 24 years.
In 1977 they moved to Iowa City, retiring in 1982.
They returned to Wellman in 1987. Herb was a former Cub Scout leader, a member of Asbury United Methodist Church and the Bible Friends Sunday School class.
He was also a member and Past Master of the Dayton Masonic Lodge, Washington Consistory, Kaaba Shrine and Order of the Eastern Star where he served as Patron.
Herbert died Saturday, June 19, 2004, with complications of Alzheimers disease, at the University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City at the age of 84 years, 6 months and 17 days.
Survivors include his wife - Betty of Wellman; five children - Jerry W. Nicholls and wife Judy of Coralville, Anne L. Nicholls of Wellman, Donald E. Nicholls and wife Judy of Creston, Michael R. Nicholls and wife Priscilla of North Liberty and Julia E. Stephens of Buckner, Missouri; 19 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; three brothers: Edgar (Pete) Nicholls of Decatur, Illinois: Roger Zollars of Phoenix, Arizona and Jack Zollars of Lancaster, California.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers: Merville, Dean and Robert.
Celebration of life services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 23, 2004 at the Asbury United Methodist Church in Wellman with Rev. Richard Pippert officiating.
Burial is in the Wellman Cemetery.
Visitation is at the Powell Funeral Home from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday with a Masonic Service at 8:00 p.m.
A memorial fund has been established for Asbury United Methodist Church and the Wellman Senior Center.

Brubaker, Bernice M.
February 17, 1930 - June 18, 2004
South English, IA
Public visitation will be held at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North English on Sunday, June 20, 2004 from 5 PM until 8 PM.
Private family graveside services will be held at 10:30 AM on Monday, June 21, 2004 at the South English Cemetery.
A general memorial fund has been established.
Bernice was born icon on February 17, 1930 in Keswick, IA, a daughter of Elsworth James and Elsie Christina Glanz Hervey.
She attended Franklin Country School and graduated from South English High School in 1947.
Bernice was united in marriage to Verle E. Brubaker on January 16, 1952 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA.
They have made their home in South English community since their marriage.
Bernice was a member of the South English Union Church, the United Workers, the True Blue Club and the Twentieth Century Federated Womens Club in South English.
She had recently attended the English River Church of the Brethren.
Bernice volunteered many years for the American Cancer Society and loved attending sporting events.
Bernice died following a brief illness at her home in South English, on Friday, June 18, 2004.
She lived 74 years, 4 months and 1 day.
She is survived by her husband Verle Brubaker of South English; a daughter Connie Scanlon and husband Jim of South English; son Ron Brubaker of Sigourney; brothers Robert Hervey of Webster, IA; Donald Hervey and wife Thelma of Hedrick, IA; and grandsons Benjamin, Daniel & Travis Brubaker all of Sigourney.
Bernice was preceded in death by her parents.
