CHARITON - Virgil Jacob Linnenkamp, age 94, of Chariton, died Wednesday, September 22, 2004, at the Chariton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Chariton. Virgil was born icon November 3, 1909, near Harper, Iowa, to Peter and Bertha (Gross) Linnenkamp. He grew up in the Harper area and graduated from St. Elizabeth High School in Harper in 1928. On May 21, 1932 he married icon Alice Jean Bratten in Rock Island, Illinois. The couple lived in Des Moines for 40 years where Virgil worked as a licensed elevator mechanic. They retired to a farm south of Chariton in 1978. Virgil later moved into Chariton. He was a member of the Moose Lodge in Des Moines and the Sacred Heart Parish in Chariton. Virgil enjoyed working on anything mechanical and building things, such as houses, airplanes and boats. Survivors include three sons: James S. Linnenkamp and wife Alice of Paso Robles, California, Gerald D. Linnenkamp and wife Marietta of Shawnee, Kansas and Dennis Linnenkamp and wife Marcia of Alto, New Mexico; three daughters: Carol Jeffries and husband Charles of Des Moines, Roberta Linnenkamp of Iowa City and Phyllis Linnenkamp of Iowa City; 23 grandchildren and 35 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife: Alice in 1992, sister: Lucille Miller and two daughters: Marilyn Jean Linnenkamp and Elizabeth Linnenkamp. Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, September 27, 2004, at Holy Trinity Parish-St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Harper with Rev. William Miller officiating. Burial will be at St. Elizabeth Cemetery in Harper. Visitation will be from 4:30 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Sunday, September 26, 2004, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Chariton, where there will be a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. There will also be visitation from 9:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Harper. A general memorial fund has been established. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Keota is handling the arrangements.

Helen Elizabeth Ihrig was born icon May 15, 1917 in Wellman, Iowa the daughter of Charles and Sarah (Pond) Ihrig. She graduated from Wellman High School and attended the Iowa State Teacher’s College. She lived in Wellman where she worked as a bookkeeper, and has lived Cedar Rapids for the last 20 years. She was a member of the First Church of Christ in Cedar Rapids. Helen died on Wednesday, November 3, 2004 at Evergreen Estates in Cedar Rapids following a long illness at the age of 87 years. Helen is survived by a brother-in-law Ray Wittrig of Cedar Rapids; a sister-in-law Bernice Ihrig of Hiawatha; and several nieces and nephews. She was prededed in death by her parents and 7 brothers and sisters.

A General Memorial Fund has been established.

Carol Ann Butterfield

Carol Ann Butterfield was born icon October 11, 1938 in Grinnell, Iowa the daughter of Lawrence Maxwell and Bertha (King) Snodgrass. She married icon Charles Butterfield Sr. on September 27, 1959 in Iowa City, Iowa. She was a homemaker and a mother. Carol died on Thursday, January 6, 2005 at the Pine Lane Health Care Facility in Mountain Home, Arkansas following a brief illness at the age of 66 years. Carol is survived by her husband Charles Butterfield Sr. of Mountain Home, Arkansas; 2 sons - Charles Butterfield Jr. of Bartonville, Illinois; Thomas Butterfield of Edelstein, Illinois; 2 daughters - Christine Mueller of Elk River, Minnesota; Beth McGee of Rea Valley, Arkansas; 5 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; a sister - Helen Snyder of Red Oak, Iowa; and a brother - Robert Snodgrass of Iowa City. She was preceded in death by one sister and two brothers.

KEOTA - Arleta G. Barnum, age 90, of Keota, died Saturday, January 22, 2005, at the McCreedy Home in Washington, following a brief illness. Arleta was born icon April 28, 1914, in Clayton County, Iowa, near St. Olaf, to Andrew O. and Nellie (Nelson) Wold. She grew up in St. Olaf, graduated from Elkader High School and received normal training. Arleta taught lower elementary school in St. Olaf for six years. On August 10, 1939, she married icon Verdine H. Barnum in St. Olaf. Following marriage the couple lived in Pomeroy until 1944, when they moved to Kalona. They settled in Keota in 1954. Arleta was a member of the United Church of Faith, Chapter CM P.E.O., Fortnightly Club and Women United and enjoyed making scrapbooks, sewing, quilting, playing bridge and camping in her younger years. Survivors include two children: Sandra Lawrence and husband Tom of Solon and Dean Barnum and wife Karla of Mishawaka, Indiana; two granddaughters: Nicole and Danielle and one brother: Burdette Wold of Monona, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband: Verdine in 1977. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 26, 2005, at the Powell Funeral Home in Keota with Pastor Sallie Graves officiating. Burial will be at Keota Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 25, 2005, at the funeral home. A general memorial fund has been established. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Keota is handling the arrangements.

Carmen Hoffman

SIGOURNEY - Carmen Glenn Hoffman, age 90, of Sigourney, went to be with her Lord Friday, March 25, 2005 at the Manor House Care Center in Sigourney. Carmen was born icon January 31, 1915, in Milford, Nebraska, to Archie and Maude (Morehead) Gemmell. On November 26, 1940, she married icon Rolland Hoffman in Lincoln, Nebraska. The couple moved to a farm in the Sigourney area shortly thereafter. Carmen worked as a waitress at Gilbert’s Café, was a clerk at Dick’s Corner and did bookkeeping at First Trust and Savings Bank, currently known as Central Valley Bank. She was a member of the Lancaster Christian Church. Carmen was very blessed. She loved reading her scripture and faithfully prayed for her family and friends. Survivors include her children: Ron and wife Phyllis and Tim and wife Teresa, both of Sigourney; four grandchildren: Chris, Clint, Jed and Ryan and six great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband: Rolland in 1997; her oldest son: Larry Joe in 1956; one brother and one sister. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Saturday, March 26, 2005, at the Reynolds-Powell Funeral Chapel in Sigourney. No memorial service is planned at this time. Consistent with her desire to help others, Carmen had arranged to donate her body to the School of Medicine at the University of Iowa in Iowa City. Memorial contributions may be made to Lancaster Christian Church or to Hospice. Reynolds-Powell Funeral Chapel and Cremation Service in Sigourney is handling the arrangements.

Tressie I. Morrison

Tressie Irene Morrison was born icon on November 28, 1911, near North English, IA, a middle child of Charles LeRoy (Roy) and Bertha Bair Johnston. Tressie was afflicted with severe asthma from the age of two but lived a long and full life. Her illness prevented her from attending high school, much to her chagrin. So as a young teen, she continued her education at home. She also stayed with others and worked as a “hired girl”, where she cared for their homes and children and she perfected the art of homemaking and motherhood. Her fondest memories as a young girl were chording on the piano and playing for dances with her family. Tressie was united in marriage to Dyle D. Morrison on August 22, 1932 in Aledo, IL. They made their home in the South English community. Dyle preceded her in death in February 1975. Sports became her hobby at home: tennis, basketball, football, baseball--- she loved them all. She enjoyed company yet was hard to get out of her home. Tressie lived three years with her daughter in Ackley and Greene, IA before moving to Keswick, IA, in 1979. She moved to North English in 1994, and became a resident of the English Valley Care Center in North English in April 2004. Tressie died at the Care Center on Tuesday, March 14, 2006 following a long illness at the age of 94 years, 3 months and 14 days. She is survived by 2 sons: Don Morrison (Marilyn) of South English, IA and Wayne Morrison (Ellen) of Keswick, IA; 3 daughters: Carolee Senger (Delmar) of Olathe, KS: Marsha Steinhart (Terry) of Sigourney, IA and Debra Bellinghausen (Jerry) of Britt, IA: 15 grandchildren; 37 great grandchildren; 6 great great grandchildren; and a sister Elma Morrison of North English, IA. Tressie was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brothers and sisters: Ila Lown, Eldon Johnston, Vern Johnston, Grace Morrison, Cloyd Johnston, Treva Wilhite, Vivian Bair, Ward Johnston and Wade Johnston. A Celebration of Life service will be held at the Christian Church in Kinross, IA, at 10:30 AM Friday, March 17, 2006 with Pastors James Stout and Don Ridenour officiating. Burial will be in the Brethren Cemetery, rural South English. Visitation will be from 4 pm to 8 pm Thursday, March 16, 2006, at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North English. A memorial fund has been established for the Kinross Christian Church or the English Valley Care Center.

HARPER - Robert L. “Bob” White, age 83, of Harper, died Tuesday, March 14, 2006, at the Maplewood Manor in Keota, following a lengthy illness. Bob was born icon February 26, 1923 in Fonda, Iowa, to Ernest and Blanche (Mullins) White and graduated from Fonda High School. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 until 1946. On April 20, 1948 he was united in marriage to Marcella Peiffer in Clear Creek Township. They lived in Milwaukee, Wisconsin for a while before relocating to Harper. Bob worked at the Natural Gas Pipeline in Harper for 35 years, retiring in March of 1986. He was a member of the Holy Trinity Parish - St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, Lagos Acres Country Club and was an active member of the Knights of Columbus as a 4th Degree Knight. Bob enjoyed golfing, building golf clubs, coaching little league baseball, traveling and working on home improvement projects. Survivors include nine children: Richard White of Keota; Donna Dempsey of Ronan, Montana; Cheryl Pauli and husband Pat of Cascade, Montana; Robert White and wife Jaymee of Ronan, Montana; Roger White and wife Sonja of Greece; Russell White and wife Kim of Oak Harbor, Washington; Randall White of Keota; Ronald White and wife Wendy of Coralville; Rodney White and wife Lisa of Keota; 22 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren and two brothers: Mert White of Sioux City and Delbert White of Anoka, Minnesota. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife: Marcella in 2005; brother: Lyle White and sister: Ethel VanSlyke. Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 18, 2006, at Holy Trinity Parish - St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Harper, with Rev. Marty Goetz officiating. Burial will be in the Holy Trinity Parish - St. Elizabeth Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Friday, March 17, 2006, at the Powell Funeral Home in Keota where the family will greet friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. A Knights of Columbus Rosary will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home. A memorial fund has been established for Maplewood Manor, Hospice of Washington County or the Knights of Columbus Scholarship Fund. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Keota is handling the arrangements.

W. Larry Coolman, 66, of Franklin, TN and formerly of Warren, IN died unexpectedly Friday morning March 17th, 2006 at his home in Franklin. Mr. Coolman had spent many successful years as manager of a paper mill and various automotive supply facilities. He was currently working for First Consulting Group in Nashville, TN. Mr. Coolman was a 1955 Eagle Scout, 1958 graduate of Warren High School, and 1963 graduate of Purdue University where he was a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. He was a member of Masonic Lodge, Warren, IN, and a U.S Army Veteran, honorably discharged. Mr. Coolman was born icon March 4th, 1940 in Huntington County, IN to W. Kenneth and Dorothy (Colbert) Coolman. He married icon Mildred (Midge Foubert) Hilgendorf on July 28th, 1967 in Wood River, IL. Mr. Coolman had lived in Wood River, IL; Toledo, OH; McComb, MI; Coshocton, OH; and Overland Park, KS before settling in Franklin, TN to be nearer to family. Survivors include his wife, Midge; a daughter, Jamie (Rob) Dreussi of Franklin, TN; daughter Kathleen (Timothy) Dwiggins of Yorktown, VA; and son Michael (Terri) Hilgendorf of Alton, IL. He was a loving grandfather to Joshua and Samantha Dreussi; Tricia (Jodi) Ander, Amy (Steve) Castagnola and Emi Leigh Dwiggins; and Michael Josef Hilgendorf; and great-grandfather to Rachael, Laura Beth and Mathew Ander; and Megan and Katelynn Castagnola. He was a father-figure to his two nieces, Carla Coolman of Washington, DC and Stephanie (Pablo) Santillana of Puebla, Mexico and great-uncle to Sara Santillana. He was preceded in death by a sister Nedra Lou and brother Matthew. Larry was a devoted husband, cherished father, and beloved grandfather, uncle, and friend to all he met. Larry loved being at their Kentucky Lake home, boating, fishing, traveling, reading, and just checking up on friends. He loved greatly, was greatly loved and will be greatly missed. There will be no calling. A graveside service will be conducted at Millersburg Cemetery in Millersburg, IA on Tuesday, March 21st. Military rites will be conducted by the American Legion; Powell Funeral Home in North English, IA is in charge of the service with Pastor Edwin Jordan presiding.
