D. Max Miller was born icon Thursday, March 20, 1919 near Wellman, Iowa the son of Daniel and Fanny (Swartzendruber) Miller. He attended the Franklin rural school. On December 28, 1947 he was united in marriage to Ruth M. Gingerich at the Wellman Mennonite Church in Wellman. He has lived and farmed in the Wellman community all of his life. He took pride in farming, soil conservation and raising cattle. He was a member of the Wellman Mennonite Church. Max died on Monday, April 24, 2006 at his home in rural Wellman following a lengthy illness at the age of 87 years. Max is survived by his wife Ruth of Wellman; and his son - Rex Miller of Wellman. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother - Dan E. Miller Jr., and a sister - Olivia Blosser.

A Memorial Fund has been established for Washington County Hospice.

Paul “Dutch” Lewis Miller was born icon July 7, 1921 near Kalona, Iowa the son of Eli L. and Anna (Gingerich) Miller. He attended Boone rural School and Sharon Township #5. On January 4, 1949 he was united in marriage to Nina Brenneman at the West Union Mennonite Church near Parnell, Iowa. Paul has lived in the Kalona and Wellman communities all of his life where he farmed and and drove truck for Home Gas for 30 years before retiring in 1990. Paul and Nina wintered in Texas for many years. He was a member of the West Union Mennonite Church. He enjoyed spending time with his family and traveling. Paul died on Monday, May 1, 2006 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City following a brief illness at the age of 84 years. Paul is survived his wife Nina of Wellman; 2 daughters - Alice Theiler of Clinton, Missouri; Donna Steele and husband Dennis of Coralville; a granddaughter - Amanda Theiler; a sister - Cora Frey of Wellman; and a brother - Monroe Miller and wife Emma Jean of Kalona. He was preceded in death by his parents; 2 sisters - Ella Miller and Nettie Schrock; and 2 brothers - George and Eldon.

A memorial fund has been established for the West Union Mennonite Church, Wellman Senior Center or the donor's choice.

Ruby J. Cavanaugh

Ruby Jean Cavanaugh was born icon on February 27, 1927 in Washington, IA a daughter of Lee and Nita Bell Small. Nita was later married icon to Charles Hohenshell and Ruby was adopted by Charles. She grew up in the North English community and attended North English High School. She was a member of the North English Christian Church. Ruby married icon Ralph Earl Cavanaugh on December 27, 1946 in Cedar Rapids, IA. They made their home in North English where they loved to fish, play cards and enjoy their family. Ruby worked 15 years at Oral B in Iowa City, IA, retiring in 1983 because of health reasons. Ruby lived 79 years, 2 months and 8 days. She is survived by a daughter Pam Schiel (David) of Cedar Rapids, IA; three sons: Randy Cavanaugh of Sigourney, IA; Rick Cavanaugh(Anita) of North Liberty, IA; and Jody Cavanaugh (Tabitha) of Dunlap, TN; 14 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; and two sisters: Shirley Van Patten of Davenport, IA and Sharon Schwertfleger of Fairfax, IA. Ruby was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter Tanna Lee Losey, her husband in June 1985, a granddaughter Shari Lynn Wallerich, and a brother David Hohenshell. A memorial fund has been established for Iowa County Hospice..

James LeEdward Long, age 23, of South English, IA, died of injuries resulting from a one car accident near Deep River, IA on Monday, May 8, 2006. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:30 am Friday, May 12, 2006 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in North English. Rev. David Hitch will officiate. Burial with military rites will follow at St. Patrick Little Creek Cemetery near Kinross. Visitation will be at James’ parents home at 306 Clark St., South English, IA on Thursday May 11, 2006, from Noon until 8 PM with a wake service at 7:00 PM. Powell Funeral Home, North English is in charge of arrangements. James LeEdward Long was born icon on May 29, 1982 in Iowa City, IA, a son of James Walter and Mary Jean Patterson Long. He grew up and lived all of his life in the South English community. James graduated from English Valleys High School in 2001.He joined the Iowa National Guard 3654th Maintenance Co. (Oskaloosa) in December 1999. James was united in marriage to Samantha Margaret Thurman in Sigourney on January 22, 2002. They made their home in South English. James enjoyed his family and children, hunting, and working on vehicles. He especially enjoyed going to demolition derbies as a member of the “My Obsession” team. He is survived by his wife Samantha Long of South English; daughter Anna Marie and son Austin Dean Steven at home; his parents James and Mary Long of South English; two sisters Jennifer Garringer (Jody) of Williamsburg, IA; Mary Alice Long of Center Point, IA; 3 brothers: Dennis A. Long (Megan) of Williamsburg, IA; Anthony J. Long of South English, IA; Joseph W. Long of South English, IA; grandmothers Mary Joan Long of South English, IA and Alice R. Patterson of Keota, IA. He was preceded in death by a brother Steven J. Long and grandfathers Lyle Lee Long and Homer E. Patterson.

Wilma Donetta Mast

Wilma Donetta Mast was born icon February 22, 1924 in Jet, Oklahoma the daughter of Samuel and Iva (Miller) Troyer. She graduated from high school in Harper, Kansas. In the early 1950's she worked at a children’s home in Kansas City. She was married icon on November 3, 1956 to Alvin Mast and later divorced. She moved to rural Kinross in 1959 where she was a homemaker and baby sat for many years. She was a member of the Wellman Mennonite Church. Wilma died on Monday, January 14, 2008 at her daughter’s home in rural Keswick following a brief illness at the age of 83 years. Wilma is survived by three children - Rita Fowler and husband Terry of Keswick; Rollin Mast and wife Tammy of Kinross; Donna Mast of Littleton, Colorado; seven grandchildren - Trenton Fowler and wife Janae of Bettendorf; Ryan Fowler of Keswick; Amy Fowler of Chicago, IL.; Ben Mast, Chelsy Mast, Courtney Mast, Maleah Mast all of Kinross; a great granddaughter - Ambria Fowler of Bettendorf; two brothers - Mervin Troyer of Hesston, Kansas; her twin Wilbur Troyer of Harper, Kansas; and a sister - Maurine Zimmerman of Harper, Kansas. She was preceded in death by her parents.

A memorial fund has been established for Wellman Mennonite Church and Keokuk County Hospice.

Kenneth Gibson
October 23, 1932 - September 28, 2006

Williamsburg - -Kenneth Harry Gibson was born icon on October 23, 1932 in Clinton, Iowa the son of Kenneth H. and Mildred L (Turner) Gibson. He graduated from Clinton High School. Ken attended college in Bismark, North Dakota and is a graduate of Scott Community College were he recieved his Associate Degree in Nursing Home Administration. He served as an Army Private in the Korean War. Ken has lived in Clinton, IA, Davenport, IA, Carbon Cliff, IL Colona, IL, and Kewanee, IL before residing in Williamsburg, IA in the late 80's. Ken was a health care administrator for the Williamsburg Care Center for many years. He was a member of St Mary’s Catholic Church in Williamsburg. He held the position of Quarter Master for 11 years for the Iburg Poulson VFW Post #8797 in Williamsburg, he was a member of the 700 Bowling Club of America and he was the Iowa State All Events Bowling Champion in 1961. He was an active volunteer for the VA Medical Center in Iowa City. Ken’s creative skills created the character “Vincent Hedges” the vampire who starred in the 1970's era Acri Creature feature. This much loved character is still remembered by many throughout Iowa and Illinois. Ken’s life was a life lived for “the other”. A relentless volunteer, he spent much of his life volunteering and as a recruiter of resources for many charities. An estimate of the dollars generated through his efforts rise into the hundreds of thousands and the list of lives touched is in the tens of thousands. But more important to him, were not the impressive totals, but rather the inherent belief that his life, and all of our lives, is to be lived for “the other”. Self riches and self grandeur never entered this humbled servants thoughts. Ken firmly believed that all of us need to understand “that which you do to the least of these, you do unto me”. Even in his death, he continued this belief through the donation of his body to the University of Iowa so that still others might learn from his gift. Glory and thanks be to God for Ken’s life lived. Ken died Thursday, September 28, 2006 at the VA Medical Center in Iowa city after a short illness. He lived 73 years, 11 months and 5 days. Ken is survived by his children: Terry (Phillip) Mitro of Williamsburg, Kenneth (Jodi) Gibson of Dubuque, Iowa, Laurence (Jenny) Gibson of Mahomet, Illinois, and Joseph (Lisa) Gibson of Plymouth, Indiana; 10 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; and 2 brothers: Pete (Connie) Anderson of Bellevue, Iowa, and Carl (Sandy) Chase of Clinton, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents: Kenneth Gibson and Mildred Turner Anderson; step-parents: Carl Anderson and Winifred Anderson; and a sister Jaqueline Winoski. A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held at 1:00pm Saturday, September 30, 2006, at the Uhlmann-Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Williamsburg. Visitation will be from 11:00-1:00pm Saturday, September 30, 2006. Memorials are for the Volunteer Services at the VA Medical Center or Iburg Poulson VFW Post #8797.

Rhonda Sue Osweiler, was born icon on December 25, 1968, in Sigourney, Iowa, the daughter of Robert W. and Marilyn Lou (Bickford) Osweiler. She grew up in the South English / Webster area. Rhonda was a 1987 graduate of English Valley High School, attended the University of Northern Iowa and later graduated from the University of Iowa.She had a love for cats and Mickey Mouse. She enjoyed golfing and spending time with her family, especially her nieces and nephews. Rhonda died on Saturday, January 19, 2008, at her home in Iowa City, after a sudden illness. She lived 39 years and 25 days. She is survived by her father Robert Osweiler of Williamsburg; 5 brothers: Loras (Jane) of Conroy, Jeff (Margaret) of Webster, Tom of North Liberty, Kurt of Williamsburg and Scott of Pleasant Hill, Missouri; 3 sisters: Becky (David) Hott of Johnston, Mary (James) Gent of Wellman and Colleen (Nathan) Johnston of North Liberty; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her mother. A Celebration of Life Service will be 10:00 am on Thursday, January 24, 2008, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in North English. Father Pat Lumsden and Father David Wilkening will officiate. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Sigourney. Visitation will be from 4:00 - 8:00 pm on Wednesday, with a Wake Service at 7:00 pm at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North English. A memorial fund has been established for Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
