Keota- Francis Eugene Lyle, was born icon August 8, 1920, near Keota, Iowa, the son of Guy and Ruth (Rittenhouse) Lyle. He attended Kinross school and graduated from Keota High School in 1937. He served in the U.S. Army from 1944-1945. During his service time he was in the European Theater, he was wounded and then received the Purple Heart Award and the Good Combat Metal. He was united in marriage to Theola Waechter on September 19, 1945, at the Ss. Peter and Paul Rectory. They lived and farmed in the Keota area all of his life also working a number of years at the Kinross Elevator. They moved to Williamsburg in January 2008. He was a member of the VFW Post #4716 in Keota. He had a great love for God, his country and spending time with his grandchildren. Francis died on Monday, February 11, 2008, at the Highland Ridge Care Center in Williamsburg, after complications of age and health problems Francis lived 87 years, 6 months and 3 days. He is survived by his wife Theola of Williamsburg; 2 daughters: Brenda White of Ames and Franda Shorey of Council Bluffs; a son Dell Lyle of North English; 8 grandchildren; a brother Charles Lyle of Keota; 2 sisters: Reta Gullett of Indianapolis, IN and Shirley Bohr of Wellman. He was preceded in death by his parents and 2 brothers: Richard and James. Celebration of Life Services will be held 10:30 am on Friday, February 15, 2008 at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Keota. Pastor James Stout, Pastor James Bringman and Pastor Kirk Statler will officiate. Burial will be in the Keota Cemetery with military rites. Visitation will be from 4:00 - 7:00 pm on Thursday at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service. A general memorial fund has been established.

KEOTA - Dennis John Hammen was born icon January 3, 1928 at his Century Farm Home in Clear Creek Township near Harper, Iowa the son of Nicholas and Theresa (Redlinger) Hammen. He wa a lifelong resident of the Keota community. He received his education at rural East Pleasant Plain School, St. Mary’s Parochial School and graduated from Keota High School in 1945. He was a farmer and retired in 1960 moving to Keota with his family. He was a member of the Holy Trinity Parish St. Mary’s Catholic Church. He enjoyed reading, music, dancing and viewing TV keeping abreast of world events and horticulture. Dennis died on Monday, February 11, 2008 at Maplewood Manor in Keota following a lengthy illness at the age of 80 years. He is survived by several cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Vernetta Rogers, a brother-in-law Rex Rogers and a beloved aunt Clara Hammen. Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, February 14, 2008 at Holy Trinity Parish St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Keota. Rev. Charles Fladung will officiate. Burial will be at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery in rural Harper. Visitation will be held from 4-6 p.m. on Wednesday, February 13, 2008 at the Powell Funeral Home in Keota where a Christian Wake Service will be held at 4:00 p.m. Memorial’s may be given for Masses or to the American Cancer Society.

KEOTA - Edith Stoutner, age 93, of Keota, died Friday, February 8, 2008, at Maplewood Manor in Keota, following a brief illness. Edith was born icon on November 18, 1914, near Keota, to Henry and Myrtle (Reighard) Trier and graduated from Keota High School. On February 12, 1935, she married icon Carl Stoutner at the Christian Church in Washington, Iowa. Following marriage the couple lived and farmed in the Keota area, moving into Keota in 1993. Edith became a resident of Maplewood Manor on January 21, 2008. She was a member of the Christian Church in Keota and enjoyed making homemade noodles, crocheting, hand sewing, quilting, camping and wintering in Florida. Survivors include her husband: Carl of Keota; daughter: Sandra Sieren and husband Marvin of Keota; three grandchildren: Vickie Altenhofen of Keota, Tina Schmitt and husband Bob of Keota and Kurt Sieren and wife Angie of Johnston; eight great grandchildren; five great great grandchildren and sister: Esther See of Keota. She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers: Boyd, Gail and Dean Trier; two sisters-in-law: Emmaline Trier and Gloria Trier and one brother-in-law: Richard See. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm on Sunday, February 17, 2008, at the Powell Funeral Home in Keota, with Rev. Dennis Hopes officiating. Burial will be at Keota Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3:00 pm until 5:00 pm on Saturday, February 16, 2008, at the funeral home. A memorial fund has been established for the Keota Q.R.S. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Keota is handling the arrangements.

Dale Homan

SIGOURNEY - Dale E. Homan, age 77, of Sigourney, died Thursday, February 14, 2008, at Manor House Care Center in Sigourney Dale was born icon March 12, 1930 in Sigourney, to David and Jessie (Bensmiller) Homan. He served in the U. S. Army during the Korean Conflict. On April 19, 1963, he married icon Frances Knaak in Lancaster, Missouri. Dale lived in Keokuk County all of his life, where he was an electrician for 35 years, retiring in 1987. He was a past member of the American Legion in Keswick and enjoyed horses. Survivors include his wife: Frances Homan of Sigourney; two sons: Jerry Homan and wife Kristy of Plainfield, Illinois and Rick Homan and wife Marie of Ladora; six grandchildren: Jessica, Joe, Eric, Jenna, Elizabeth and Bobbi; two sisters: Maxine Lemley of Primghar and Marjie Thrasher of Park Rapids, Minnesota and one brother: Richard Homan of Keswick. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister in infancy and one brother: Edward Homan. Memorial graveside services will be held at a later date at Conner Cemetery in rural Sigourney. Interment will be at Conner Cemetery. There will be no visitation. A general memorial fund has been established. Reynolds-Powell Funeral Chapel and Cremation Service in Sigourney is handling the arrangements.

LeRoy Stephen Lillig, was born icon April 21, 1918, in Keota, the son of Peter and Anna (Meicher) Lillig. He attended St. Mary’s School in Keota. He served as a Corporal in the U.S. Marines 4th Division 6th Battalion, during WWII. He received 2 Purple Heart Awards, an American Campaign Award and a WWII Victory Medal. On July 11, 1947, he was united in marriage to Margaret A. McNurlen in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He worked as a scaleman for River Products Quarry for over 20 years, retiring in 1988. He lived in Keota all of his life, wintering in Texas the last 20 years. He was a member of Holy Trinity Parish- St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Keota. He was a lifetime member of the Keota V.F.W. Post #4716.He enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting, but most of all spending time with his family. LeRoy died Thursday, February 14, 2008, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City after an extended illness. He lived 89 years, 9 months and 24 days. He is survived by his wife Margaret Lillig of Keota; a daughter Susan (Bill) Messner of Sterling CO; a daughter-in-law Linda Lillig of Omaha, NE; 9 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren and 9 great, great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son Michael; and 11 brothers and sisters. Mass of the Resurrection will be 10:30 AM on Tuesday, February 19, 2008, at Holy Trinity Parish- St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Keota. Fr. Charles Fladung will officiate. Inunrnment will be at a later date. Visitation will be Monday from 4-7 PM, with a Wake Service at 7 PM at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Keota. Memorials may be given to the Keota QRS.

Mary Ann Ochs passed away February 17, 2008, at Kavanagh House on 56th Street. Funeral services will be held at 12:30 PM, Friday, February 22, 2008, at United Church of Faith in Keota, Iowa, with burial following at the Keota Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 11 AM, Friday until service time at the church. Mary Ann was born icon March 21, 1937, in Washington, Iowa, the daughter of Gerald M. and Mabel (Valenta) Ochs. She was raised in Keota, Iowa, and was a graduate of Keota High School in 1954. Mary Ann graduated from Stephens College and the University of Iowa. She taught in Rockwell, Garner and Tipton and retired after teaching 32 years at East High School in Des Moines. Mary Ann was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, P.E.O. Chapter GH, Delta Kappa Gamma and the University of Iowa Alumni Association. She enjoyed being with friends, pet sitting, spectator sports (especially the Iowa Hawkeyes), golf and traveling. Mary Ann was a true animal lover. Mary Ann was preceded in death by her father. She is survived by her mother, Mabel Ochs, of Keota, Iowa. Memorials may be made to Animal Lifeline of Iowa, P.O. Homestead - LaJune Katherine Wolter was born icon June 30, 1931, near Charter Oak, Iowa, the daughter of Adolph and Amelia (Bockelmann) Nemitz. She was baptized on July 19, 1931, and confirmed on March 25, 1945, at St. Paul Lutheran Church - Hanover, near Charter Oak. LaJune attended Concordia High School and College in Seward, NE. On June 10, 1954, she was united in marriage to Glenn F. Wolter, at St. Paul - Hanover, near Charter Oak. She received her first call to St. John’s in Homestead in 1954 teaching grades 1-4. Later she accepted a call to Trinity in Conroy, where she taught grades 5-8 and later grades 1-3. When the Lutheran Interparish School began in 1967, she became the first grade teacher and remained so until her retirement in 2007. LaJune was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Williamsburg, where she was very active teaching mid-week classes, Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. She was a member of numerous organizations such as: The Cedar Rapids Reading Council, Lutheran Education Association, Women’s Organization Delta Kappa Gamma, VFW #8797 Ladies Auxiliary and the Homestead Welfare Club. LaJune died Monday, February 18, 2008 at her home in Homestead after a battle with cancer at the age of 76 years. She is survived by her husband: Glenn of Homestead; two daughters: Jeanne Welsh of Williamsburg and Patti (David) Heitshusen of South Amana; 3 grandsons: William and Brett Heitshusen and Michael Welsh; a brother Edwin (Frances) Nemitz of Charter Oak; 2 sister-in-laws: Betty (Robert) Roemig and Mary Wolter all of Homestead; numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, a son-in-law, William Welsh and a brother-in-law, Jerry Wolter. Celebration of Life Service will be held 1:30 pm on Thursday, February 21, 2008, at the St. John’s Lutheran Church, rural Homestead. Rev. Carl Cloeter will officiate. Burial will be in the St. John’s Cemetery. Visitation will be form 4-7 pm on Wednesday, with a V.F.W. Auxiliary service at 4 pm, at the Uhlmann-Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Williamsburg. Memorials are for: the Lutheran Interparish School, St. Paul Lutheran Church, Essence of Life Hospice or the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Williamsburg - Sally Lupe Gallo, was born icon May 14, 1930, in Mason City, Iowa, the daughter of Cleofas and Mary (Rangle) Torres. She was a graduate of St. Joseph High School in Mason City and she attended Mason City Business College. On November 21, 1951, she was united in marriage to Dr. Julian J. Gallo, in Mason City, Iowa. They lived in Mason City, until moving to Williamsburg in 1960. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, in Williamsburg. Sally died on Monday, February 18, 2008, at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City, following a brief illness. She lived 77 years, 9 months and 4 days. She is survived by 3 daughters: Chris (Dr. Mike) Engel of Glen Allen, VA, Cindy Gallo of Coralville, Rita Gallo of North Liberty; 4 sons: Tom (Susan) Gallo of Grinnell, Rick Gallo of San Antonio TX, Tony (Karla) Gallo of Grinnell and Andy (Susan) Gallo of Iowa City; 10 grandchildren: Jason Engel, Sean Engel, Jonathan Gallo, Christopher Gallo, Ben Gallo, Alex Gallo, Brianna Gallo, Julian Gallo, Olivia Gallo and Madison Gallo; a brother: Isop Torres of Mason City; and a sister: Minnie Gonzales of San Josa, CA. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband in 1992; 2 brothers: Jessie and Joe; and 4 sisters Carmen, Anita, Inez and Isabel. Funeral Mass will be held 10:30 AM on Friday, February 22, 2008, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, in Williamsburg. Presider will be Fr. Joseph Roost. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-8 PM on Thursday, at the Uhlmann-Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Williamsburg. Memorials are for the Williamsburg Public Library.
