Lloyd Rank was born icon on September 13, 1922 on the family farm, rural Deep River, Iowa, the son of Jacob and Sarah Pfiester Rank. He attended Bunker Hill country school and graduated from Keswick High School in 1940. Lloyd was united in marriage to Mary June Roberg on August 13, 1955 at St. Matthew Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids. They farmed near Deep River until moving to Highland Ridge in Williamsburg in 2005. Lloyd enjoyed working with his machinery and livestock, was well known for his horsemanship, loved traveling, reading and having a good conversation. He and Mary hosted many foreign exchange students over the years. He served on the DR-M School Board, the St. Joseph Catholic Church Parish Council, the Barnes City CO-OP Board, the FMHA Board, and was a charter member of the Iowa County Cattleman’s Association. Lloyd struggled the past year with Alzheimers and died of complications of pneumonia on Sunday, December 14, 2008 at Highland Ridge, at the age of 86 years, 3 months and 1 day. He is survived by his wife Mary of Williamsburg; sons Paul Rank and wife Gina of rural Deep River and Karl Rank and girlfriend Tressa Burch of Norway, Ia; daughter Sandra Cobb and husband Michael of North English; 2 granddaughters: Stephanie and Desta Rank; and a sister Pauline Icenbice of Deep River. Lloyd was preceded in death by his parents, and sisters: Mabel Cochran, Rene Schwer, Hazel Kron, Verna Myron, Mary Cogswell, Josephine Elick, Marvel Greiner and Doris Rank. A funeral mass will be held at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, December 17, 2008 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in North English with Rev. Pat Lumsden officiating. Burial will be in the Armah Cemetery, rural North English. Visitation will be from 3:00 PM to 6:30 PM with a wake service at 6:30 PM on Tuesday, December 16, 2008 at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North English. A memorial fund has been established for St. Joseph Catholic Church.

SIGOURNEY - Donna L. Hahn, age 69, of Sigourney, died of brain cancer Friday, December 12, 2008, at her home in rural Sigourney. Donna was born icon in Davenport, Iowa, to Wesley W. and Erna (Ihlefeld) Howe. She graduated from Ottumwa High School in 1957 and St. Luke’s School of Nursing in Davenport in 1960. On September 10, 1960, she married icon Errol Hahn at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ottumwa. Donna was the Keokuk County Public Health Nurse, Director of Nursing at Manor House Care Center, worked in Dr. Jutabha’s office, the Sigourney Care Center and Keokuk County Hospice, retiring in 2005. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Sigourney, the Altar and Rosary Society, Farm Bureau, Keokuk County Health Center Auxiliary, Keokuk County Hospice Auxiliary, Sigourney Music Boosters, was the Red Cross Disaster Nurse, Keokuk County First Responders and numerous other community volunteer activities. Donna enjoyed bird watching, gardening, cooking and canning. Survivors include three daughters: Margaret Hahn of Des Moines, Laura Hanna and husband Dale of Milford and Sarah Hahn and husband Carl Golightly of Burbank, Washington; her mother: Erna Logan of Ottumwa; three brothers: Dale Howe of Ottumwa, Darryl Howe of Naperville, Illinois and Dennis Howe of Rockford, Illinois; two step sisters: Judy Legnard of North Carolina and Kay Gray of New York and one step brother: Chris Logan of Ottumwa. She was preceded in death by her father and husband: Errol in 2007. A memorial mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, December 17, 2008, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Sigourney, with Rev. Charles Fladung officiating. Burial will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Sigourney. Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 16, 2008, at Reynolds-Powell Funeral Chapel, where the family will be present from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. There will be a wake service followed by a rosary at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral chapel. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established for the Keokuk County Health Center Auxiliary or Iowa Public Television. Reynolds-Powell Funeral Chapel and Cremation Service in Sigourney is caring for Donna and her family.

Enos Hugh Miller was born icon on March 11, 1910 in Reno County, Kansas the son of Harvey J. And Lizzie Yoder Miller. He was raised in Kansas and was baptized in his youth in Yoder, Kansas. Enos moved with his family to Iowa in 1927. He has since made his home in Johnson and Washington Counties. He was united in marriage to Erma Pauline Doolin in Wellman on June 1, 1932. He farmed many years northeast of Wellman. Enos also worked at various jobs and occupations, retiring in 1996. He was an active member of the Wellman Mennonite Church, serving as Sunday School teacher and Superintendent, as a church council member, and serving on the IMS Board. He became a resident of the Parkview Manor Complex in Wellman in September 2004. Enos died following a short illness at Parkview Manor on Saturday, December 13, 2008 at the age of 98 years, 9 months and 2 days. He is survived by his children: S. Duane Miller (Florence) of Iowa City, E. Gene Miller (Edna) of Kalona; Ermadine Boshart (Norman) of Wayland; L. Dale Miller (Carol) of Iowa City; 22 grandchildren; 32 great grandchildren; sisters:; Anna Mae Hartzler of Wellman, IA; Bertha Wenger of South Carolina; and Nora Dickel Of Kalona, IA. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Erma in February 2003, a son Dean Miller, daughters Janice Blosser and Elaine Earnest, sisters Elsie Miller, Fannie Doolin and Mattie Bontrager and brother Dan H. Miller. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at the Wellman Mennonite Church in Wellman, at 10:30 AM on Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2008 with the Rev. Marvin Hostetler officiating. Visitation will be at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Wellman on Monday, Dec. 15, 2008 from 2 PM to 8 PM with the family present from 5 PM. to 8 PM. Burial will be in the Wellman Mennonite Cemetery in Wellman. A memorial fund has been established for the Wellman Mennonite Church and Amity Hospice.

SIGOURNEY - Martha A. Green, age 95, of Sigourney, died Wednesday, December 10, 2008, at the Keokuk County Health Center in Sigourney, following a brief illness. Martha was born icon December 21, 1912, in Sigourney, to Charles H. and Phoebe (Hendricks) Elliott, who moved to Sigourney in June of 1907 to operate a produce farm and broom factory. Martha graduated from Sigourney High School in 1931. On March 19, 1932, she married icon Johnston Green in Sigourney. A homemaker, Martha was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church in Sigourney, where she served as Sunday School teacher and pianist. She was also a member of the Royal Neighbors Lodge, Rebekah Lodge and the Daughters of the American Revolution. Survivors include two sons: Robert and wife Mary of Dewey, Arizona and William and wife Virginia of Albuquerque, New Mexico; six grandchildren: Jeff, Tony, Lisa, Bill, Nathan and Tim; 10 great grandchildren: James, Jennifer, Margie, Amy, Christopher, Colleen, Nathan, Maya, Carissa and Megan; three great great grandchildren: Haley, Aryana and Steven; two brothers: Jim Elliott of Cedar Falls and Marion Elliott of Deep River and one sister: Lucille Rogers of Milan, Illinois. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband: Johnston in 1996; brothers: David and Charles Elliott; sisters: Bernice Martin and Margery VanPatten and step-sister: Dortha Dewberry. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, December 13, 2008, at the First Baptist Church in Sigourney, with Rev. Dirk Alspach officiating. Burial will be at Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Sigourney. Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Friday, December 12, 2008, at the Reynolds-Powell Funeral Chapel in Sigourney. A memorial fund has been established for Hospice of Keokuk County or the Sigourney First Baptist Church. Reynolds-Powell Funeral Chapel and Cremation Service in Sigourney is handling the arrangements.

Mary Miller

Mary Miller was born icon January 16, 1920 in Marshall County near Napanee, Indiana the daughter of Levi S. and Sarah (Yoder) Schrock. She moved to Iowa in 1945 with her family. Mary accepted Christ in her youth and was a faithful member of the Old Order Amish Church. On December 28, 1950 she was united in marriage to Rudy Miller near Kalona, Iowa. Mary died on Saturday, November 29, 2008 at her home in rural Kalona from complications of age. She was 88 years, 10 months and 13 days old. Mary is survived by her husband Rudy of Kalona; 2 sons - Marlin Dale (Edith) Miller of Kalona; Evan Eugene Miller of Kalona; 7 grandchildren - Lamar, Nita, Sharon, Twila, Gareth, Lonnie, and Rhonda; 3 brothers - Olen (Mary) Schrock of Iowa City; Edwin (Fannie) Schrock of Burlington Junction, Missouri; Leo (Nedra) Schrock of Kalona; 3 sisters - Judith (Perry) Miller of Hutchinson, Kansas; Sylvia Ropp of Kalona; Alma (Daniel) Nisly of Kalona; and a sister-in-law Pauline Schrock of Kalona. She was preceded in death by her parents; 2 brothers - Perry and Elmer; and a brother-in-law Elmer Ropp. Funeral Services will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, December 2, 2008 at the Rudy Miller Residence at 5665 Sharon Center Rd. S.W. in rural Kalona. Minister in charge is Milford Miller. Burial will be in the Peter Miller Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 1-9 p.m. on Sunday and from 9a.m. - 9 p.m. on Monday at the Rudy Miller residence. The Yoder-Powell Funeral Home in Kalona is in charge of the arrangements.

Richard Eckman

East Amana- Richard E. Eckman passed away peacefully Thursday, November 27, 2008 at his home surrounded by his family, after a courageous battle with cancer at the age of 81 years. Richard was born icon October 13, 1927 in Aurora, Illinois, the son of Realand and Eleanor (Waddell) Eckman. He grew up and attended school in Marshalltown, Iowa. Richard has lived in the Amanas since 1944. He was united in marriage to Bertina Trimpe on October 26, 1947 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids. Richard worked for Amana Refrigeration nearly 40 years, retiring in 1989. He also owned Eckman Signs, a local sign painting business. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church near Homestead, a charter member of the Amana Heritage Society and the Amana Sportsmen's Club, a member of the Amana Arts Guild, and was a volunteer fireman for 30 years. Richard had many interests, including hunting, fishing, Boy's Weekends, traveling, wood carving, cooking and fixing just about anything. However, his most important role was that of loving husband, father and grandfather, affectionately known as "Popper". > > He is survived by his wife Bertina of East Amana; three children: Charles (Patricia) Eckman of Nampa, Idaho, Cynthia (Roger) Gelinas of New Gloucester, Maine and Joel (Judy) Eckman of Iowa City, Iowa; five grandchildren: Nicholas, Alicia, Matthew, Kristin and Jody Eckman and a brother: Harold (Lucille) Eckman of Amana. Richard was preceded in death by his parents. > > Celebration of Life Service will be 10:30 am Monday, December 1, 2008 at St. John's Lutheran Church near Homestead. Pastor Wayne Woolery will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday from 2:00 to 6:00 pm at the Uhlmann-Powell Funeral Home in Williamsburg. HARPER - Marjorie M. Striegel, age 88, of Harper, died Sunday, November 23, 2008, at the Manor House Care Center in Sigourney, following a brief illness. Marjorie was born icon November 22, 1920, in rural Sigourney, to Zeno and Edna (Horras) Hammes. She grew up in the Clear Creek area and attended rural schools. On April 3, 1945, she married icon Cletus M. Striegel at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Clear Creek Township. Following marriage the couple lived in the Harper community, where Marjorie was a homemaker. She was a member of Holy Trinity Parish - St. Elizabeth Catholic Church and an active member of the Women’s Club for several years. Marjorie enjoyed sewing, gardening, reading and being with her family. Survivors include five children: Mary Jane Striegel of Marshall, Minnesota, Fr. Robert “Bob” Striegel of Iowa City, Dr. David Striegel and wife Terry of Sac City, Rita Ann Krueger and husband Jon of New Richmond, Wisconsin and Andrew Striegel and wife BeLinda of Harper; 10 grandchildren; one great grandson; two sisters: Isabelle Baker of Washington and Mary Hahn of Sigourney and one brother: Bernard Hammes of Sigourney. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband: Cletus in 2005 and brother: Donald Hammes. Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, November 26, 2008, at Holy Trinity Parish-St. Mary Catholic Church in Keota, with Rev. Charles Fladung and Rev. Robert Striegel officiating. Burial will be at Holy Trinity Cemeteries-St. Elizabeth Cemetery in Harper. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 25, 2008, at the Powell Funeral Home in Keota, where there will be a Rosary at 4:00 p.m. and a Christian Wake Service at 7:00 p.m. A memorial fund has been established for Manor House Care Center. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Keota is handling the arrangements.

Williamsburg - Robert M. Murphy, was born icon on May 16, 1923, in Atlantic, Iowa, the son of Martin L. and Anna B. (Gaulke) Murphy. He graduated from Atlantic Public School in 1941, he received his B.A. from Upper Iowa University and his M.A. from the University of Iowa. He was a Seaman 1st Class in the US Navy Amphibious Forces during WWII from 1942-1945. On August 14, 1949, he was united in marriage to Betty J. Starkweather in Greene, Iowa, they were blessed with a daughter Melinda. Betty passed away on January 6, 1981. He later married icon Marilyn E. (Ahrens) Rathjen on November 29, 1986 in Williamsburg, Iowa. He was the High School Principal for Williamsburg Community Schools for 36 years. He was a member of the St Paul Lutheran Church in Williamsburg. He was also a member of the Secondary Principal’s Association, and Lion’s Club. He served on the Representative Council of Iowa High School Athletic Association for 11 years, the Williamsburg City Council for 6 years, and the Williamsburg School Board of Directors for 6 years. He enjoyed golf, was an avid football fan and he loved the Williamsburg Community. Bob died on Sunday, November 23, 2008, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City following a lingering illness at the age of 85 years. He is survived by wife Marilyn of Williamsburg; a daughter Melinda (Nick) Driscoll of Williamsburg; 2 stepsons- Mark Rathjen and Roger Rathjen both of Williamsburg; 2 granddaughters- Beth Driscoll (fiancé Mark Augspurger) of Des Moines and Anne (Jamison) Moeller of West Des Moines; 4 step grandchildren- Tyler (Ashley) Rathjen, Troy Rathjen, Samantha Rathjen and Terra Rathjen-Baker; a step great grandson Aidan Rathjen. He is preceded in death by his parents; 1st wife Betty; a stepson David Rathjen; and 2 brothers Warren W. Murphy and Lester Murphy. Celebration of Life Service will be held 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, November 29, 2008, at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Williamsburg. Pastor Carl Cloeter will officiate. Burial will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Williamsburg. Visitation will be on Friday from 4-7 P.M. at the Uhlmann-Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Williamsburg. A memorial fund has been established for the Williamsburg Public Library and St. Paul Lutheran Church.

WASHINGTON-Pauline Ellen Crooks, age 86, of Washington, formerly of Harper, died Saturday, November 22, 2008, at the Washington Care Center in Washington, following a long battle with cancer. Pauline was born icon June 8, 1922, in Commerce, Iowa, the daughter of Latta and Lanora (Bertrand) Acheson. She attended St. Elizabeth elementary school and graduated from Sigourney High School and Parsons College in Fairfield with a degree in teaching. On May 27, 1944, Pauline married icon Cloyce I. Crooks at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Harper. Pauline taught in on one room elementary school in Harper and Talleyrand. She was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Washington, the Altar and Rosary Society in Harper the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Y Women. Pauline enjoyed quilting, gardening, bird watching, genealogy, the Cubs and her family, especially her grandchildren. Survivors include three sons: Bryan Crooks and fiancee Pam Brackin of Washington, Iowa, Gene Crooks and wife Diane of Des Moines and Todd Crooks and wife Jeanette of Seattle, Washington; one daughter: Bonita Crooks of Des Moines and nine grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband: Cloyce in 1990; three brothers and six sisters. Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 29, 2008, at Holy Trinity Parish-St. Mary Catholic Church in Keota with Rev. Charles Fladung officiating. Burial will be at Holy Trinity Cemeteries-St. Elizabeth Cemetery in Harper. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. on Friday, November 28, 2008, at the Powell Funeral Home in Keota, where there will be a wake service at 4:00 p.m. A memorial fund has been established for Hospice of Washington County. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Keota is handling the arrangements.
