Williamsburg - Anita Sue Von Ahsen was born icon on January 17, 1951, in Sigourney, the daughter of James and Zelda (Middlekauff) Collins. She was baptized on August 16, 1954 at the United Methodist Church in Keswick. She graduated from Tri-County High School and attended Iowa State University. Following college she was employed by Amana Refrigeration for five years. Anita was united in marriage to Keith R. Von Ahsen on August 28, 1976 at Immanuel Lutheran Church. The couple lived in rural Williamsburg where they raised their family. She was a full time homemaker for 21 years, while she cared for her six children. From 1999-2001 she was employed at Marengo Memorial Hospital and then went on to be a transcriptionist at Mercy Services in Williamsburg until 2008. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church where she has served on the Ladies Aid. Anita found joy in making crafts, quilting, cooking, gardening, canning, playing the organ and singing in the choir at church, attending her children’s sporting and musical activities and researching family genealogy. Anita’s true passion was watching her children grow in the love of Jesus Christ. Anita died Friday, November 21, 2008 at the English Valley Care Center in North English after a courageous battle with cancer at the age of 57 years.. She is survived by her husband Keith of Williamsburg; 6 children- Tracy (Aaron ) Moffett of Mechanicsville, Shelly (Donnie) Shaffer of Williamsburg, Christina Von Ahsen of North Liberty, Rachel Von Ahsen of Mount Vernon, Holly Von Ahsen and Aaron Von Ahsen both of Cedar Rapids; a grandson: Camden Shaffer; two brothers: Ronald (Janis) Collins of What Cheer and Alan (Deanna) Collins of Ames; two sisters: Barbara (Rick) Schwarting of Atkins and Cheryl (Tom) Smithson of Altoona. Anita was preceded in death by her daughter: Melissa Kay Von Ahsen in 1983, father: James in 1995 and mother: Zelda in 2007. Celebration on Life Service will be 10:30 am Wednesday, November 26, 2008 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church near Williamsburg. Pastor Richard Meyer will officiate. Burial will be in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4:00 to 8:00pm at the Uhlmann-Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Williamsburg. Memorials are for Immanuel Lutheran Church, Lutheran Interparish School or Iowa City Hospice.

Marjorie May Blum, was born icon on May 20, 1923, in Galva, Iowa, the daughter of Guy and Estelle (Bullock) Martin. She married icon Jack C. Rickerd on August 27, 1938. He was killed in a truck accident on September 27, 1943. She later married icon Marion Russel Blum on August 30, 1945. He passed away on July 29, 1979. Marjorie was a homemaker, and worked on the farm and dairy operation alongside her husband Marion until his death. She later worked for several local businesses in the Wellman and Kalona communities, where enjoyed meeting and talking with the many people that she met. Marjorie married icon Jim Blum on April 24, 1987 and they later divorced. She loved playing cards, collecting ceramic mushrooms, doing crafts and going to garage sales, but most important to her was spending time with her children and grandchildren. Marjorie passed away on November 20, 2008, at the Pioneer Park Care Center in Lone Tree, following an extended illness at the age of 85 years and 6 months. She is survived by 6 children- Dan (Nancy) Rickerd of Lone Tree, Jackie (Carroll Kenney) Blum of Kalona, Bill (Mickey) Blum of Crawfordsville, Bob (Sandy) Blum of Wellman, Nancy Baker of Woodbine and Terry (Danette) Blum of Wellman; 9 grandchildren- Bob (Robin) Schulty, Dawn (Pat) Cazin, Denise (Larry) Thurman, Jerri (Jim) Kron, Ruchel (Don) Hiller, Leslie (Nicholas) Duvall, David (Danalea) Blum, Steve Blum and Craig Blum; 13 great grandchildren; a brother Earl (Mae) Martin of Columbus Junction; Her extended family grandchildren- Christy and husband Mark, Kenny, Danny, Tami and fiancé Dave Edwards, and Derik Plank and wife Shelly. She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands Jack Rickerd and Marion Blum; sisters Hazel Shinn, and Fran Moyer; a brother Kenny Martin; brother-in-law Ray Moyer; son-in-law Dwight Baker; and a great granddaughter Chloe Plank.

A general memorial has been established.

HARPER - Norbert J. Weber, age 93, of Keota, formerly of Harper, died Wednesday, November 19, 2008, at Maplewood Manor in Keota, following a lengthy illness. Norbert was born icon September 26, 1915, in Hudson, Iowa, to John B. and Caecilia (Peiffer) Weber and attended Clear Creek School. He then worked for W.C. Gretter in Harper. Norbert joined the United States Navy in 1940, where he served on the USS Mississippi and USS Renville during World War II. He was discharged in 1946. In November of 1948, Norbert married icon Helen Steinhauer in Climbing Hill, Iowa. The couple lived and farmed in rural Harper, where they also owned and operated Weber Steak House until 1985. Norbert became a resident of Maplewood Manor in Keota in 2002. He was a member of Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, the Isaac Walton League and Keota V.F.W. Post # 4716 and enjoyed hunting and fishing. Survivors include four brothers: Wilfrid Weber of Chesapeake, Virginia, Paul Weber of Keota, Isidore "Doc" Weber of Kalona and J. Anthony Weber of Washington; three sisters: Rita Vogel of Keota, Martha Kleinmeyer of Iowa City and Celeste Woltering of Keota; many nieces and nephews and dear friend: Venita Stull of Sigourney. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife: Helen in 1985; sister: Bernadine Conklin; five brothers: Cletus, Clare, Luke, Edward and Mark; several nieces and nephews. Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 22, 2008, at the Holy Trinity Parish-St. Mary Catholic Church in Keota with Rev. Charles Fladung officiating. Burial will be at Holy Trinity Cemeteries-Ss. Peter & Paul Cemetery in Clear Creek Township. Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Friday, November 21, 2008, at the Powell Funeral Home in Keota, where there will be a wake service at 5:00 p.m. A memorial fund has been established for Hospice of Washington County or St. Mary Catholic Church. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Keota is handling the arrangements.

Frances Miller

Wellman-Frances J. Miller was born icon November 19, 1914 near West Liberty, Iowa, the daughter of Alfred Nixon and Emma Kate (Arnold) Rabe. She graduated from West Liberty High School. Frances was united in marriage to Ardell J. Miller on June 26, 1938 in Independence, Iowa. The couple has lived in Iowa City, Lone Tree, Washington and moved to Wellman in 1943. Frances enjoyed playing Bridge, Sequins, spending time with her family, caring for cats and playing the piano. She formerly was active in T.T.T., Eastern Star, Bridge Club and the Red Hats. She was a member of the Asbury United Methodist Church in Wellman. Frances died Thursday, November 13, 2008 at Parkview Manor in Wellman after a brief illness at the age of 93 years. She is survived by two sons: James (Linda) Miller of Tavernier, Florida, Don (Cindy) Miller of Kansas City, Missouri; two daughters: Kay (Pat) Langenberg of Iowa City and Janelle ( Robert) Brophy of Wellman; 15 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. Frances was preceded in death by her parents, husband in 1993, two sisters: Desda Lewis and Ardyce Buck and two brothers: Adrian Rabe and Arnold Rabe. Celebration of life Service will be 10:30 am Monday, November 17, 2008 at Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Wellman. Rev. Rich Pippert will officiate. Burial will be in the Wellman Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday, November, 16, 2008 from 2:00 to 6:00pm with the family present from 2-4pm. Memorials are for Wellman Ambulance or the Asbury United Methodist Church.

Magdalena Beachy age 84 of Edina, Missouri, formerly of Kalona died Thursday, November 13, 2008 at the Northeast Regional Medical Center in Kirksville, Missouri following a short illness. Magdalena was born icon Monday, June 2, 1924, in rural Kalona, Iowa the daughter of Edwin and Esther (Miller) Hershberger. On December 3, 1946 she was united in marriage to Jonas Beachy in rural Kalona. Jonas died on March 8, 1998. Magdalena moved to Edina, Missouri in March of 2007. She was a member of the Oak View Mennonite Church in Edina. Magdalena is survived by 11 children - Rhoda Mae (Daniel) Miller of Abbotsford, WI.; David (Joy) Beachy of Athens, WI.; Nelson (Kathy) Beachy of Kalona; Esther (Noah Jr.) Miller of Edina, MO.; Rachel (Menno) Miller of Grayson, KY.; John (Ruby) Beachy of Thorp, WI.; Marilyn (Andrew) Miller of Kalona; Gloria (Lamar) Steiner of West Liberty, KY.; Morris (Christine) Beachy of Tremonton, UT.; Norman (Marilyn) Beachy of Kalona; Myron (Amanda) Beachy of West Liberty, KY.; 99 grandchildren; 81 great grandchildren; 4 brothers - Paul, Joe, Mark and John Hershberger; and a sister Rhoda Hershberger. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; 3 infant grandsons - Lynn Beachy, David Miller, Gabriel Beachy; and a great grandson Darnell Beachy. Funeral Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, November 17, 2008 at the Sharon Bethel Church in rural Kalona. Ministers in charge are James Swartzentruber, Virgil Schrock, and John Miller. Burial will be in the Haven Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. on Saturday and from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Sunday at the Iowa Clothing Center Building in rural Kalona. The Yoder-Powell Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Ellen Edelman was born icon April 15, 1915 near Kalona, Iowa, the daughter of Chancy and Mary (Yoder) Hershberger. She attended rural Snake Hollow School. On December 31, 1937 she was united in marriage to Samuel Edelman at her parents home in rural Iowa City. She worked at the Kalona Egg Plant and Kalona Dry Cleaning and Laundry. In January of 1960 they moved to Hesston, Kansas, where she worked at the Turkey Plant in Hesston and at Hurst’s Egg breaking plant in Newton. In September of 1967 they returned to Kalona. She was a member of the Kalona Mennonite Church. Ellen died on Friday, November 7, 2008, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City from complications of a stroke at the age of 93 years. Ellen is survived by a son Clayton Edelman and wife Christy of Bella Vista, Arkansas; 3 grandchildren; 3 step grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; and 8 step great grandchildren; and a brother Walter Hershberger of Kalona. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Samuel on March 7, 1997; 3 sisters - Velma Swartzendruber, Mabel Yoder, Viola Bontrager; and a brother - Leo Hershberger.

A memorial fund has been established for the Kalona Mennonite Church.

SIGOURNEY - Dorothy M. Seibel, age 89, of Sigourney, died Tuesday, November 4, 2008, at the Sigourney Care Center, following a brief illness. Dorothy was born icon January 13, 1919, near Lancaster, Iowa, to Harry and Stella (Beasley) Ragan and graduated from Sigourney High School. On January 13, 1948, she married icon F. James Seibel in Kirksville, Missouri. Dorothy worked for many years at the Ford Garage, having worked for Madsen Motors, Utterback Ford, Arthur Goettsch and Wagler Motors. Survivors include her daughter-in-law: Jody Krier-Seibel of Sigourney and two nephews: Jack Clough of Gates Mills, Ohio and Robert Clough of Palatine, Illinois. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband: F. James Seibel, daughter: Cynthia Ann Seibel, son: James D. Seibel, sister: Ruth Ragan Clough and brother-in-law: John Clough. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, November 7, 2008, at Reynolds-Powell Funeral Chapel in Sigourney, with Rev. Julie Sterling officiating. Burial will be at Pennington Cemetery in rural Sigourney. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 6, 2008, at the funeral chapel. A memorial fund has been established for the Iowa Commission for the Blind. Reynolds-Powell Funeral Chapel and Cremation Service is handling the arrangements.

Eunice Lenore Marner, was born icon on July 3, 1915, at LaJunta, Colorado, the daughter of George and Sarah (Kreider) Reber. She moved to Iowa with her parents at 3 years of age and located in the Wellman area. She attended the rural Hickory Grove and Center High Schools after which she did housework for families. Accepting Christ as her Savior, she was baptized and remained a member of the Lower Deer Creek Church until death. On December 1, 1935, she was married icon to Ora Marner, at the home of John Y. Swartzendruber in Johnson County, IA. They settled on a farm and made that their occupation. They lived and worked together there for 49 years, leaving in 1984 to move to Wellman. She was active in teaching Sunday School at Lower Deer Creek Church, WMSC, Free Will and she volunteered at the Crowded Closet in Iowa City. Eunice died suddenly on Sunday, November 2, 2008, at the Silver Pond Assisted Living Center in Wellman, at the age of 93 years. She is survived by her husband Ora Marner of Wellman; a son James Marner and wife Charleen of St. Louis, MO; a daughter Loris Miller and husband Merle of Granger, IA; 8 grandchildren- Michelle Pashos, Kevin (Carol) Marner, Marta (Kevin) Guckes, Vonda (Chris) Briles, Lisa (John) Allen, Kimberly Roby, Krista (Brian) Kielty and Scott (Ann) Miller; 20 great grandchildren- Michael (Joanna), Nicholas, Zachary and Alexis Pashos, Megan (Matt) Viox, Kendra (Chad) Stearman, Brycen (Kacey) Marner, Aaron, Jessica and Carmen Briles, Emma and Amie Kielty, Allison and Benjamin Roby, Wilson, Samuel and Elliot Miller, Danielle, Audrey and Rachel Guckes; 5 great great grandchildren-Michael Pashos, Christopher and Drew Courtright, Brooke Viox and Chase Stearman; a sister-in-law Melda Reber and 2 nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents; 3 brothers- Virgil, Walter and William; a sister Mary Delila Reber, and 2 nephews.

A memorial fund has been established for the Lower Deer Creek Mennonite Church.

KALONA- Robert “Bob” Becker, was born icon December 12, 1927, in Sigourney, Iowa, the son of Vincent and Leona (Lutz) Becker. His parents died when he was young and he was raised by George and Clara Lutz. He was a Cpl in the US Army during the Korean War. On May 25, 1957, he was united in marriage to Mary Irene Flynn, at the St James Catholic Church in Washington, Iowa. He farmed throughout his lifetime between the Wellman and Keota communities. In August 1999, Bob and Irene moved to Kalona. He was a member of the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Wellman. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, American Legion and the Farm Bureau. He enjoyed antique tractors. In the 2004 Wellman parade he placed first in the antique tractors division. Bob died on Friday, October 31, 2008 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City, following complications of a stroke, at the age of 80 years. Bob is survived by his wife Irene of Kalona; 3 daughters- Jean Anne(Brian) Ripley of Webster City, IA, Julie Kay (Tom) Schnerre of East Moline, IL and Debra Sue (Roger) Williams of Cedar Rapids, IA; a son Douglas Robert (Lauri) Becker of Marion, IA; 8 grandchildren; 1 great grandchild; and a sister Delores Franzen of Washington, IA; He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother in infancy and his adopted family George and Clara lutz and Jim Lutz. Celebration of Life Service will be held 10:30 AM on Tuesday, November 4, 2008, at the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Wellman. Father Rich Adam will officiate. Burial will be in the Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington. Visitation will be on Monday from 4-7 PM with a prayer service at 7:00 pm at the Yoder-Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Kalona, IA. A memorial fund has been established for the Kalona First Responders.
