Leitha I. Spiess was born icon on June 21, 1912, in Hayesville, IA, to Cleve and Elsie Beasley. She married icon Fred Spiess on December 31, 1930 in Hayesville.. She worked various jobs in Iowa while married. She would travel to Estes Park, CO every summer to work with her husband at the Loveland Heights Cottages from 1960 to 1973. Fred preceded her in death in November 1974. She then went back alone in 1976 until 1979 to work at the Cottages, Letha moved from Iowa to Estes Park in 1982 with her daughter Dolores and son-in-law Gene Claypool. A that time shehe house doing what she loved, cooking, baking and making her “infamous” noodles along with a wide variety of breads and cookies. She lived in Estes Park until 2005 when she moved to Denver, CO. “Grandma” never met a stranger. She made friends no matter what the situation and enjoyed every bit of her 96 years. Letha died on Thursday, October 2, 2008 in Westminister, CO. She is survived by grandsons: Mark (Mary) Claypool of Arvada, CO and Mike (Kelly) Claypool of Estes Park, CO; great granddaughters Katharine Marie Claypool and Michelle Lee Claypool both of Estes Park, CO; as well as many nieces, nephews and terrific friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter Dolores Marie Claypool, brothers Ralph and Roy Beasley, and sisters Lela Kerkove and Lila Crane. “GOD BLESS YOU ALL AND I LOVE YOU” A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, October 8, 2008 at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North English with Rev. Cliff Haider officiating. Burial will be in the North English Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 PM to 7 PM on Tuesday, October 7, 2008 at the funeral home. In Lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Colorado Hospice, 3501 W. 23rd Ave., Denver, CO 80211 in the name of Letha Spiess.

Dale Evan Wright, age 77, of Wellman, formerly of Webster, died Tuesday, September 30, 2008, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City, following a lengthy illness. Dale was born icon December 23, 1930, near What Cheer, Iowa, to Alvin O. and Grace (Garrett) Wright and graduated from Keswick High School in 1949. On October 28, 1952, he married icon Doris Jean Moore in Sigourney. Dale operated heavy equipment for Keokuk County, farmed and drove semi trucks for many years before retiring in the early 1990s. He has been a resident of Parkview Manor in Wellman since February of 2001. Dale enjoyed collecting caps and miniature cars, playing pitch and he especially enjoyed teasing his grandchildren. Survivors include his wife Doris of Webster; three daughters: Janet Wright of North Liberty, Elizabeth Curl and husband Pat of Wellman, Sue Ann Harthoorn and husband John of Watkins; two sons: John Wright and wife Lavonne of Pella, Ernest Wright and wife Tammy of Knoxville; 12 grandchildren: Lindsay, Patrick Jr., Jennifer & husband Michael, Angela & husband Doug, Amy & husband Brian, Isaac, Maggie, Tricia, Kristen, Zachary, Tyson and Natasha; 5 great grandchildren: Sydney, Jackson, Evan, Bailey and Kerrigan; and two sisters: Phyllis DeYoung of Knoxville and Betty Hejda of Des Moines. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Orlo Wright in infancy, and two sisters: Dora Stanley and Laura Mae Hoover. Celebration of Life Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, October 5, 2008, at the Powell Funeral Home in North English with Rev. George W. Bishop officiating. Burial will be at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in rural South English. Memorial visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 4, 2008, at the funeral home. A memorial fund has been established for the Children’s Miracle Network. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North English is handling the arrangements.

Williamsburg - James A. Harl, was born icon on October 1, 1928, in Seymour, Iowa, the son of John T. and Louise (Walker) Harl. He attended Hayes Country School in Appanoose County and Graduated from Seymour High School in 1946. On August 14, 1949, he was united in marriage to Wilma Bettis in Seymour. He farmed and in 1953 he became a distributor for Standard Oil where he worked for 38 years. In 1955, Jim & Wilma established their home and business in Casey, Iowa, where they lived until 2004, when they moved to the Highland Ridge Senior Living Community in Williamsburg. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Casey. He was a 50 year member of the Purity Masonic Lodge in Casey, a 25 year member of the Casey Volunteer Fire Department, where he served as chief, he served as Mayor of Casey and on the Casey City Council. He was a member of the Scottish Rite, Za-Ga-Zig Shrine Temple in Des Moines and a 4-H Leader. He enjoyed camping, attending the State Fair, horse and cattle farming, and playing poker with his friends. Jim died on Wednesday, October 1, 2008, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa, following a brief illness at the age of 80 years. He is survived by his wife Wilma of Williamsburg; a son Eldon (Julie) Harl of Williamsburg; 2 daughters- Barbara (Bruce) Hutton of Mount Ayr, IA and Marilyn (Lee) Manning of Phoenix, AZ; 4 granddaughters; 1 great granddaughter; a sister- Julia Anne McGavran of Urbana, IL; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister Rose Marie Harl. Celebration of Life Service will be held 10:30 am on Saturday, October 4, 2008, at the Uhlmann-Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Williamsburg. Pastor James Parks will officiate. Graveside services will be 3:30 pm on Saturday, at the South Lawn Cemetery in Seymour, Iowa Visitation will be on Friday, from 4-8 pm at the Uhlmann-Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service. A memorial fund has been established for the Casey Volunteer Fire Department or the Williamsburg Volunteer Fire Department.

Marengo- Ralph Henry Schaefer, was born icon on July 28, 1917, in rural Iowa Township, Iowa County, Iowa, a son of William J. and Frieda Anna (Sandersfeld) Schaefer. He was baptized on September 2, 1917, and confirmed on April 5, 1931, at St. John’s Lutheran Church near Homestead. He attended St. John’s Parochial School. He was united in marriage to Esther Teggatz on August 20, 1940, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Williamsburg. They have lived in Sumner Township since 1941. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Williamsburg. Where he has served as an elder, trustee and was a member of the fellowship club. He enjoyed traveling, dancing and attending his grandchildren’s activities. Ralph died on Tuesday, September 30, 2008 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City, following a brief illness, at the age of 91 years, 2 months and 2 days. He is survived by his wife Esther of 68 years; 2 daughters: Pat (Larry) Dellamuth of Williamsburg; Connie (Chris) Slater of Iowa City; a son: Ken (Jolene) Schaefer of Marengo; 8 grandchildren: Mike (Sandy) Dellamuth, Dave (Joi) Dellamuth, Michelle (Mike) Piersol, Nick (Ann) Schaefer, Angie (Jason) Iburg, Jennifer (Brandon) Simpson, Melissa Slater and Lauren Slater; 10 great grandchildren; a brother: Vic Schaefer of Williamsburg and a sister: Alice Bier of Fresno, California. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother: Hilbert Schaefer; a sister-in-law: Myrta Schaefer; and a brother-in-law: Bob Bier. Celebration of Life Service will be held 10:30 am on Friday, October 3, 2008, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, in Williamsburg. Pastor Carl Cloeter will officiate. Burial will be in the St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery in Williamsburg. Visitation will be from 5:00 - 8:00 PM on Thursday, October 2, 2008, at the Uhlmann-Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Williamsburg. Raymond Loyd Cobb, was born icon on May 7, 1917, in Tipton, Missouri, a son of Samuel and Nona (Petty) Cobb. He attended Yankee Point Country School, near North English, Iowa. On June 4, 1939, he was united in marriage to Dorthy V. Snare, near North English. She passed away in November 1981. On September 3, 1983, he was united in marriage to Donna Faas, at the Kinross Christian Church, in Kinross. He has lived in the North English and Kinross areas all of his life. He farmed and worked at Amana Refrigeration for 17 years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, watching baseball, playing cards and most of all his family. Raymond died on Monday, September 29, 2008, at his home in Kinross after a long illness at the age of 91 years, 4 months and 22 days. He is survived by his wife Donna of Kinross; children: Treva ( Marvin) Middlekauff of Cedar Rapids, IA ; Tressa Slaubaugh of Cedar Rapids, IA; Milo (Mary) Cobb of Haslet, TX; Golda (Josh) Bringman of Kinross, IA; John Cobb of Cooper, TX; Ruth (Richard) Trier of Keota, IA; Kathy (Steve) Stoner of Kinross, IA; step-children: Kenneth Faas of North English, IA; Lewis (Kim) Faas of Batavia, IL ; 20 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; 2 half-brothers Milo (Nellie) Cobb of Vinton, IA and Glenn (Hazel) Cobb of North English, IA. He was preceded in death by his parents: wife Dorthy; brothers and sister: Estill Cobb, Edgar Cobb, Aline Wallace; a step-brother Harley “Pat” Carter: step-sister Viola Ballard; and a daughter-in-law Dianne Cobb. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:30 am on Saturday, October 4, 2008, at the Kinross Christian Church in Kinross with Rev. Jim Bringman and Pastor Kirk Statler officiating. Visitation will be from 4 pm to 8 pm on Friday, October 3, 2008 at Powell Funeral Home & Cremation Service in North English, IA. Burial will be in Piersol Cemetery near North English. A general memorial fund has been established.

Elaine Marjorie Cram, age 82 of North English, died following a long illness on Saturday, September 27, 2008 at the English Valley Care Center in North English. A Celebration of life Service will be held at 10:30 AM on Wednesday, October 1, 2008 at the Powell Funeral Home in North English with Pastor Edwin Jordan officiating. Burial will be in the Millersburg Cemetery in Millersburg, IA. Visitation will be from 5 PM to 8 PM on Tuesday, September 30th at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North English. She is survived by her husband Marion of North English, IA; Children: Marsha (Kelly) Newhouse of Robins, IA; David Cram of Iowa City, IA; Merna (Don) Sellers of Cedar Rapids, IA; 6 grandchildren: Todd & Chad Newhouse, Leah Lind-Cram, Brad Unkel, Tara Snyder and Lisa Michalec; 11 great grandchildren and a sister Shirley Steffen of Williamsburg, IA. She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers Donald and William Faas. Elaine was born icon on August 17, 1926 in Millersburg, IA, the daughter of Clare M. And Vena M. Pope Faas. She graduated from Millersburg High School and lived her entire life in the Millersburg and North English area. On June 5, 1947, she was united in marriage to Marion Cram at the Pleasant Grove Grace Brethren Church. Elaine worked 10 years as a distribution clerk at Amana Refrigeration. She was a member of the Pleasant Grove Grace Brethren Church of rural North English and served as a Sunday School teacher and church treasurer for many years. She loved sports, was an avid Hawkeye fan, was wonderful cook and a great farm wife. Elaine Struggled many years with Alzheimers and became a resident of the English Valley Care Center in January 2002. She died there on Saturday, September 27, 2008. She lived 82 years, 1 month and 10 days. A general memorial fund has been established.

John "Dick" Couch

John Richard “Dick” Couch was born icon March 11, 1920, in Piedmont, Missouri the son of John Leonard and Mayme (Tyrey) Couch. He graduated from high school in DeSoto, Missouri. On June 13, 1940, he was united in marriage to Ruth Moore in Normandy, Missouri. Dick served in the United States Navy during WWII. After returning from the war they lived in St. Louis County before moving to Bowling Green, Missouri, where they lived for 20 years and then moved to West Plains, Missouri where they lived for 25 years. Dick worked as a sales agent for Standard Oil for 12 years, a life insurance agent for Lincoln Mutual Insurance for 12 years, and for the State of Missouri Employment Security for 18 years before retiring in 1984. Dick and Ruth moved to Kalona in November of 2000. Dick was a member of the First Baptist Church in West Plains, Missouri where he was very active and held many offices and also sang in a men’s quartet. Since moving to Kalona, he attended the Kalona Mennonite Church. Dick died on Thursday, September 25, 2008, at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City following a sudden illness at the age of 88 years. Dick is survived by 2 daughters - Julie Griffith of St. Louis, Missouri; June Miller and husband Marlin of Kalona; 5 grandchildren - Darin Griffith, Kyle Griffith, Courtney Holycross, Jamie Trueblood, Shonda Hershberger, 5 great grandchildren - Alexis Holycross, Tristen Griffith, London Hershberger, Camden Hershberger and Tatum Trueblood; and a brother - George Couch of Olive Branch, Mississippi. Dick was preceded in death by his parents, his wife in March of 2007, 2 great grandsons - Kai and Boston Hershberger; and 3 brothers - Leonard Couch, Hubert Couch and Fred Couch.

A memorial fund has been established for Kalona Mennonite Church.

Neoma Ann Gott was born icon on August 25, 1940, near Ollie, IA, a daughter of Leslie and Margaret Wood Northup. She graduated from Ollie High School. On October 6, 1962, she was united in marriage to Thomas Gott in Missouri. They made their home in Sigourney until moving to North English in 1979. Neoma worked 20 years at Amana Refrigeration and retired in 1994. She enjoyed reading, doing word search puzzles, embroidery and being with her grandchildren. She became a resident of Colonial Manor of Amana in July 2008, and died there of cancer on Tuesday, September 23, 2008 at Colonial Manor of Amana. She lived 68 years and 29 days. She is survived by 3 daughters: Barbara Frese of North English, IA; Margaret (Mike) Earnest of Millersburg, IA; Leslie Gott of North English, IA; 8 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; 5 sisters: Betty Derby, Helen Follman and Mildred Follman all of Sigourney, IA; Louise Atchison of Oskaloosa, IA and Virginia Schmidt of Readlyn, IA. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son-in-law Kenny Frese Sr. and a brother William Northup. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:30 AM on Friday, September 26, 2008, at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North English with Chaplain Thomas Walsh officiating. Visitation will be from 8:30 AM until service time at 10:30 AM on Friday, September 26, 2008. Burial will be in Rock Creek Cemetery near Ollie, IA. . A general memorial fund has been established.

Homestead - Orville Adolph Wichmann, of Williamsburg formerly of Homestead, was born icon on February 24, 1921, near Homestead, Iowa, a son of John & Mathilda (Burgin) Wichmann Sr.. On March 8, 1942, he was united in marriage to Lillian Adella Huedepohl, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in York Township. After they were married icon they lived on the farm near Homestead for 63 years, until moving to Williamsburg in 2005. He was a life long farmer. Orville served as a Sergeant in the European Theater, in the US Army during WWII from 1942 - 1946. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, where he served as chairman of the congregation, trustee, elder, cemetery sexton and was in the church choir. He served on the LIS board, the ASCS board and was a member of Farm Bureau. He enjoyed talking about his experiences in WWII. Orville died on Monday, September 22, 2008, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City after a brief illness, at the age of 87 years, 6 months and 29 days. He is survived by 6 children- Carol (Mark) Nissen, Allen (Peggy) Wichmann all of Des Moines, Patricia (Bob) Lillis of Williamsburg, Mary (Bob) Hudson of Fairfax and Connie (Steve) Schmuecker of Cedar Rapids, and David (Barb) Wichmann of Homestead; 12 grandchildren- Brandi (Josh) Knopfel, Tyler Nissen, Brian (Monica) Lillis, Shelly (Ryan) Modracek, Marcy (Kurt) Weber, Jason (Julie) Lillis, Eric Hudson, Rachel Lillis, Katy Wichmann, Alissa Schmuecker, Andy Wichmann and Austin Schmuecker; 3 great grandsons- Owen Lillis, Rob Lillis and Evan Knopfel; and a sister-in-law Joanne Huedepohl of Williamsburg. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Lillian on August 18, 2008; his siblings- Adolph (Anna) Wichmann, Elsie (Rudolph) Hagen, Chris (Esther) Wichmann, Jack (Helen) Wichmann, Amanda (Art) Pundt, Rose (Bill) Wolter, Henry (Mabel) Wichmann, Minnie (Arnold) Werling, Martin (Jo) Wichmann and an infant Otto Wichmann. Celebration of Life Service will be held 10:30 am on Friday, September 26, 2008, at St. John Lutheran Church near Homestead. Pastor Wayne Woolery will officiate. Burial will be in the St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery with Military Rites. Visitation will be on Thursday from 4:00 to 8:00 pm at the Uhlmann-Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Williamsburg. Memorials are for St. John Lutheran Church and the Lutheran Interparish School.
