Claude Harry Krumm was born icon March 26,1938 in Grinnell, IA, to Marion and Thelma Gillespie Krumm. Claude graduated from Tri-County High School in 1957. He married icon Mary Clarene Johnston on September 13, 1958 at Immaculate Conception Church of Armah. Claude operated keswick Oil Co. for 14 years, and Krumm Construction for 26 years. He was a volunteer firefighter in Keswick for over 35 yrs years, a member of the Keswick Commercial Club, Keswick Lions Club, Opera House Board, Church Council for Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, and past mayor of Keswick. Claude enjoyed woodworking and carving, making stained glass crafts, square dancing and spending time with friends and family. He also enjoyed lending a helping hand to anyone who needed it. Claude died of cancer at his home in Keswick on Sunday, September 21, 2008. He lived 70 years, 5 months and 26 days. Survivors include his wife of 50 years Mary Clarene: his children, Christine (Kim) Jahlas of Victor; Doug (Laurie) Krumm of Swisher; Kaye (Scott) Gettings of Ottumwa; Holly (Dale) Fry of Keswick; Andy (Mary) Krumm of Louisville, Ky; David (Penny) Krumm of Keswick; and Matt Krumm of Chicago, Il; 18 grandchildren: Erin, Shawn, and Nathen Jahlas; Dustin, Colton, and Kenton Krumm; Elizabeth, Courtney, and Madelyn Gettings; Joel, Tina and Melody Fry; Ashley, Tommy, and Caroline Krumm; and Katie, Kristin, and Cameron Krumm; sisters Elizabeth McIntosh of Spotsylvania, PA; Virginia Van Patten of Madera, CA; and Barbara Buckley of Chillicothe, MO; brothers Lawrence Krumm of Turlock, CA; Harvey Krumm of Foley, AL; Wesley Krumm of Killduff, IA, and Keith Krumm of Murfreesboro, TN. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Margareta Irene, his father-in-law Cloyd Johnston and a brother-in-law Ray Clubb. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, September 24, 2008 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in North English with the Rev. Pat Lumsden officiating. Visitation will be from 5 PM to 8 PM on Tuesday, September 23, 2008 at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North English with a Wake Service at 7:30 PM. Burial will be in the Sorden Cemetery., near Keswick. A memorial fund has been established for Keokuk County Hospice and Keswick First Responders.

Williamsburg - Mary A. Spratt was born icon on June 11, 1912, in Green Township, Iowa County, Iowa, the daughter of James J. and Catherine D. (Murphy) Spratt. She lived in the Parnell area until moving to Hillside Estates in 1964 and later moved to the Williamsburg Care Center in 2000. Mary died on Sunday, October 26, 2008, at the Highland Ridge Care Center in Williamsburg, following a brief illness at the age of 96 years. She was preceded in death by her parents and 3 brothers: Harold (Bill) Spratt, Joe Spratt and John Spratt. Celebration of Life Service will be held on 10:30 am on Tuesday, October 28, 2008, at the Uhlmann-Powell Funeral Home in Williamsburg. Pastor Kirk Statler will officiate. Burial will in the St. Joseph Cemetery in Parnell. Visitation will be on Tuesday, from 9:30 am until service time at the Uhmann-Powell Funeral Home. A general memorial fund has been established.

Lawrence E. Whetstine was born icon on October 8, 1912 near Wellman, Iowa, a son of Melvin and Anna Steiner Whetstine. He attended Smith Creek country school and graduated from Wellman High School in 1931. Lawrence was a life long farmer in the Wellman area. On February 29, 1936, he was united in marriage to Margaret Aileen Riddle in Oskaloosa, Iowa.. She preceded him in death in May 1967. Lawrence married icon H. Louise Hayes at her home in Washington on December 14, 1968. He was a 50 year member of the Masonic Lodge, a member of the Asbury United Methodist Church for 84 years and served on numerous church committies. Lawrence sold Washington County Farmer’s Mutual Insurance for many years. He was a 4-H leader and had a great fondness for horses. Lawrence’s hobby and love was for his family and working in his wood shop. He died suddenly at his home near Wellman on Sunday, March 9, 2008. He lived 95 years, 5 months and 1 day. He is survived by his wife H. Louise of Wellman; four children: Angelene Ornduff (Ron) of Ainsworth; Edward Whetstine ( Sally) of Wellman; Larry Whetstine ( Mildred) of Wellman; Carol Hough (Jay) of West Chester; two step children: Sandy Greiner (Terry) of Keota and Douglas Hayes (Margaret) of Normal, Il. He has 12 grandchildren, 6 step grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, and 12 step great grandchildren. Lawrence was preceded in death by his parents, wife Margaret, an infant brother and brother Gerald Whetstine. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:30 AM on Wednesday, March 12, 2008 at the Asbury United Methodist Church in Wellman, with the Rev. Rich Pippert officiating. Visitation will be held from 4 PM to 7 PM with Masonic Rites at 7 PM, at Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Wellman on Tuesday, March 11, 2008. Burial will be in the Wellman Cemetery. A memorial fund has been established for the Asbury United Methodist Church.

Lora L. Shetler was born icon September 14, 1935 near Kalona, Iowa the daughter of Edward and Fannie (Miller) Doolin. She attended Center rural school. On June 7, 1953 she was united in marriage to Marland J. Shetler at the East Union Mennonite Church. They were in I-W service in Des Moines for two years and then returned to Kalona to farm. Lora sold Avon, worked at the Post Office, and along with her husband they owned and operated the Kalonial Townhouse Restaurant from 1976 - 2003. She was currently working at the Kalona Cheese Factory. She was a charter member of the Kalona Mennonite Church, WMSC, and she enjoyed her Bible study group. She volunteered at the Crowded Closet, Crooked Creek Christian Camp and she was a MOPS mentor. Lora died peacefully on Friday, March 7, 2008 at her home in Kalona from complications of cancer at the age of 72 years. Lora is survived by 3 daughters - Cindy Litwiller and husband Merlin of Fort Dodge; Carla Slaubaugh and husband Doug of Parnell; Carol Gingerich and husband Maynard of Riverside; a son Jim Shetler and wife Jessica of Dubuque; 14 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; 2 sisters - Arlene White of Las Vegas, Nevada; Aletha Smithson and husband Tom of Fort Wayne, Indiana; and a brother - Morris Doolin and wife Rozetta of Salem, Oregon. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband Marland on May 21, 2002.

In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established for Crooked Creek Christian Camp and Washington County Hospice.

Vincent R. Finnegan, 81, Williamsburg, died Thursday, March 6, 2008, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, following a sudden illness. Funeral mass will be held at 10:00 AM, Monday March 10, 2008, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Williamsburg, Father Joseph Roost presiding. Burial will be at St. Joseph's Cemetery, Parnell, with Military rites by the Iburg Poulson VFW Post #8797. Visitation will be on Sunday, March 9th, from 2-7 PM with a Rosary at 7 PM, at the Uhlmann-Powell Funeral and Cremation Service in Williamsburg. A general memorial fund has been established. Vincent was born icon December 4, 1926, in Keswick, Iowa, to John and Ellen (Lenaghan) Finnegan. After attending Parnell High School, he farmed and then entered the service. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII from 1945 to 1946 in the 98th Bomb Squadron. On October 6, 1951, he was united in marriage to Rose Koenighain, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Holbrook. Vincent was an independent truck driver for many years. In 1967, he went to work for for L. L. Pelling and continued through his retirement. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and a member of the Iburg Poulson VFW Post #8797, Williamsburg. Vince is survived by his wife, Rose of Williamsburg, and 10 children: Diane (Mark) Portwood of Homestead, Jan Finnegan of Williamsburg, Chuck (Jean) Finnegan of Oxford, Darlene Finnegan of Williamsburg, Tammy (Chuck) Cochran of Oxford, Joe (Liz) Finnegan of Iowa City, Brian ( Melody) Finnegan of Parnell, Brett (Amy) Finnegan of Oxford, Angie (George) Jensen of Williamsburg and Jodi ( Matt) Donohoe of Parnell, 27 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. In addition, he is survived by 2 sisters: Sister Marie Finnegan of Davenport and Ione Lawrence of Cedar Rapids; 1 brother: Terry Finnegan of Parnell; 2 sister-in-laws: Alice Finnegan of Iowa City and Ginny Dougherty of Williamsburg; a brother-in-law: Bud South of Williamsburg and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents: John & Ellen Finnegan, 2 children: Shawn and Karen Finnegan, 3 brothers: John, Leo and Tom Finnegan, 4 sisters: Mary Kempf, Eileen South, Irene Bergen and Margaret Swick, and his father & mother-in-law: Don and Leona Koenighain. Vince will always be remembered for his love for his family and his dog, Toby, his quick wit and keen sense of humor. He was a Green Bay Packer and Fighting Irish of Notre Dame fan and always enjoyed a good John Wayne movie. Vince was very proud of his Irish heritage. He will be missed more than words can express.

Gilbert Von Ahsen

Williamsburg – Gilbert Henry Von Ahsen was born icon March 26, 1918 at home in York Township, Iowa County, the son of William and Anna (Newkirk) Von Ahsen. He attended Immanuel Lutheran School. He sang as a youth in the Walther League where he sang in a talent quest in the Chicago Opera House. Gilbert served in the U.S. Army during WWII, serving from 1941-1945. His tour included the Pacific Theater. Gilbert returned home and was united in marriage to Geneva Zuber on November 15, 1945 at St. John’s Lutheran Church near Homestead. The couple lived and farmed near Williamsburg until moving to Williamsburg in 1980. In 2006 they made their home at the Highland Ridge Senior Living Community in Williamsburg. Gilbert was an active member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church, serving as an elder, singing in the church choir for 65 years and a member of the school board. He also was a member of the Iowa County Cattlemen, Farm Bureau and the VFW Iburg Poulson Post #8797 in Williamsburg. Gilbert died Sunday, March 2, 2008 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City after a sudden illness at the age of 89 years. Gilbert is survived by his wife: Geneva; a son: Gerald Von Ahsen both of Williamsburg; a daughter: Gail (Joe) Ruzeck of Waterloo; 4 grandchildren: Tara Ridgeway, Miranda Von Ahsen, Alex Von Ahsen and Michael Von Ahsen; 5 great grandchildren: Ashlyn, Elle, Cole, Aaron and Delanie; a brother: Virgil Von Ahsen of Rio, Wisconsin. He was preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers: Orville Von Ahsen, Loren Von Ahsen and Wayne Von Ahsen; 3 sisters: Erva Schwarting, Flora Bailey and Gladys Maas. Celebration of Life Service will be 10:30 am Friday, March 7, 2008 at Immanuel Lutheran Church near Williamsburg. Rev. Richard Meyer will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be on Thursday from 3-7 pm, with a VFW service at 7 pm, at the Uhlmann-Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Williamsburg. Memorials are for Immanuel Lutheran Church and the Lutheran Interparish School.

WILLIAMSBURG - Ida Marie Witte was born icon July 3, 1910 near Homestead, Iowa the daughter of George and Gesina (Steinke) Sandersfeld. On September 19, 1929 she was united in marriage to Martin F. Witte at St. John’s Lutheran Church near Homestead. She has lived in the Williamsburg community all of her life where she was a homemaker. She was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church, and was a charter member of the Immanuel Ladies Aide. She enjoyed quilting and growing roses. Ida died on Sunday, March 2, 2008, at the English Valley Care Center in North English following a brief illness at the age of 97 years. Ida is survived by 2 sons - Harlan Witte and wife Shirley of North English; Don Witte of Logan, Iowa; 2 daughters - Janet Maschmann and husband Ed of Victor; Joann Strang of Fairfax; 6 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; a sister - Gertrude Vogt of Williamsburg; and a brother - Vernon Sandersfeld of Homestead; and a sister-in-law - Ruth Sandersfeld of Williamsburg. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband on September 14, 1994; a granddaughter Debra Stewart; a grandson Scott Maschmann; a son-in-law Terry Strang; 3 sisters Irna Maas, Alma Mueller and an infant sister; and 3 brothers - Martin, Elmer and Wayne Sandersfeld. Celebration of Life Service will be on 10:30 AM Thursday, March 6, 2008, at Immanuel Lutheran Church. Rev. Richard Meyer will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. She attended Trinity Lutheran School in Conroy. On February 13, 1938 she was united in marriage to Paul Brockshus at Trinity Lutheran Parsonage in Conroy. She lived in rural Homestead all of her life where she was a homemaker. She enjoyed playing cards, cooking, baking and most of all spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Adella died on Sunday, March 2, 2008, at the Rose Haven Nursing Home in Marengo after a brief illness. She lived. 94 years, 1 month and 3 days. She is survived by 2 daughters: LaVonne Brockshus of Coralville and Janice (Jim) Cerveny of Swisher; 2 grandchildren: Ann (Dan) Parsons of Wilton and Darren (Kristy) Cerveny of Moscow, Iowa; 4 great grandchildren: Karen & Corey Parsons and Ryan & Amira Cerveny; 2 sisters-in-law: Luella Brockshus and Vera Brockshus both of Williamsburg. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband; 3 sisters: Ida Halverson, Esther Stanerson and Edna Brockshus; 4 brothers: Vernon, Edmond, Bill and an infant Arnold; and a step sister Adele Maas. Celebration of Life Service will be 10:30 AM on Wednesday, March 5, 2008, at St. John Lutheran Church, rural Homestead. Pastor Wayne Woolery will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Phyllis Marie Jones was born icon on May 10, 1922 in Iowa City, IA, the daughter of Lester and Hazel Stoner Jordan. She grew up near Millersburg and attended rural Hillside School. She was united in marriage to William Dale Jones on July 26, 1940 at her parents home near Millersburg. They farmed between Millersburg and Deep River until moving to North English in 1986. Dale preceded her in death in January 1992. Phyllis moved to Mayflower Homes in Grinnell in April 2000. Phyllis was a member of the North English United Methodist Church and later attended the United Church of Christ in Grinnell. She was also a member of the Heritage Society, the Community Club, the Grinnell Chamber of Commerce and had been an active volunteer at the North English Community Center. She loved to play cards and was an excellent cook. She also enjoyed the activities and playing games at Mayflower. Phyllis died on Saturday, March 1, 2008 at the Grinnell Regional Medical Center in Grinnell following a short illness. She lived 85 years, 9 months and 20 days. Phyllis is survived by a son Ronald (Jean) Jones of Grinnell, IA; a daughter Janice (Dr. Donald) Roller of Grinnell, IA; 12 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a daughter Virginia Koehn and husband Edwin, and a half brother Clarence Jordan. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North English at 10:00 AM on Thursday, March 6, 2008. The Rev. John Epperson will officiate. Burial will be in the Bailey Cemetery near Keswick, IA. Visitation will be from 5 PM to 7 PM at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North English on Wednesday, March 5, 2008.. A memorial fund has been established for the American Heart Association.
