SIGOURNEY - Ardith Joy Pence, was born icon October 23, 1940, in Delta, Iowa, a daughter of Garold and Letha (Roberts) Moore. She graduated from Delta High School in 1959. She was united in marriage to Donnie Lee Pence on March 27, 1959, at the Delta United Methodist Church, in Delta. She lived in the Delta and Sigourney area all of her life. She was a licensed agent for Farm Bureau and State Farm for a number of years. She was a member of the Delta United Methodist Church and a member of the Neighborhood Club. She enjoyed spending time with her kids and grand kids, doing puzzles, tying rugs, camping at the State Fair and playing with her dog Gizzy. Ardith died on Saturday, December 27, 2008, at her home after a courageous battle with cancer, at the age of 68 years. She is survived by her husband Donnie of Sigourney; 3 children- Leta Jean & Dale Tedrow of Douds, Betty Waechter of Sigourney and Larry & Lori Pence of Sigourney; 10 grandchildren- Matthew, Brandin, Tylor, Adam, Michael, Morgan, Mark, Bryce, Brooke and Brayden; a sister Carol & Dean Benson of Sigourney; stepsister Dixie Shipley of Delta; a stepbrother Roger & Kim Strong of Delta ; a half brother Greg Moore of Delta; a sister-in-law Helen Marie Kleinschmidt of Sigourney; and her step mother Wilma Moore. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother Howard Leroy Moore; and her grandparents- Burley & Ethel Roberts and Roy & Dell Moore. Celebration of Life Service will be held 10:30 am on Tuesday, December 30, 2008, at the Delta United Methodist Church in Delta. Pastor Vince Homan will officiate. Burial will be in the Garrett Cemetery, in Delta. Visitation will be on Monday, from 4-7 pm at the Reynolds-Powell Funeral Chapel in Sigourney. A general memorial fund has been established.

WELLMAN- Lewis E. Hohenshell, was born icon on March 14, 1919, in North English, Iowa, a son of Otha T. and Martha A. (Feldman) Hohenshell. He attended North English High School. On August 13, 1940, he was united in marriage to Wilma Jean Morrow, at the Christian Church in Cedar Rapids. He was a federal U.S.D.A. poultry inspector in Wellman, West Liberty, and later worked at custodial service U of I Children Hospitals. He lived in the North English area for over 20 years and Wellman for over 60 years before moving to the Halcyon House in Washington in 2004. He was a member of the Asbury United Methodist Church in Wellman and a member of the Moose Lodge. He enjoyed, fishing, visiting with friends and he loved his music. He loved playing the accordian, harmonica, singing and whistling. He was known as the “Whistler” at Halcyon House. Lewis died on Monday, December 29, 2008, at the Halcyon House in Washington, after a brief illness, at the age of 89 years. He is survived by his wife Wilma of Washington, IA; a son Larry (Linda) Hohenshell of Ankeny, IA; 2 daughters Connie (Lain) Messer and Patricia (Harry) Karnes all of Washington, IA; 8 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; 1 great great grandchild; and a sister Carlene Van Sant of Mesa, AZ. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother Don Hohenshell; and 2 step brothers R.G. Hohenshell and Turl Hohenshell.

A memorial fund has been established for Halcyon House and Washington County Hospice.

Edna Yoder
December 11, 1916 - December 30, 2008
Kalona, Iowa

Edna Yoder was born icon December 11, 1916 in Thomas, Oklahoma the daughter of Benedict and Mary Ann (Bontrager) Yoder. In her youth she was baptized and became a member of the Old Order Amish Church in which she remained a faithful member until her death. On November 28, 1935 she was united in marriage to Amos Yoder in Thomas, Oklahoma where they lived until moving to Garnett, Kansas and then to Kalona in 1955. Edna died on Tuesday, December 30, 2008 at her home in rural Kalona from declining health at the age of 92 years and 19 days. Edna is survived by a son Melvin Yoder and wife Lizzie of Kalona; a daughter Mary Susan Yoder and husband Simon of Keota; 13 grandchildren; 47 great grandchildren; two sisters Fannie Mast of Weatherford, Oklahoma; Bertha Yoder and husband John Jr. of Hutchinson, Kansas; and a brother Tobias Yoder of Kalona. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Amos Yoder; 2 stillborn twin granddaughters; 3 great grandchildren - Nancy Arlene Yoder 9 days old; Myron Lynn Miller 3 years and 3 days old; and Heidi Kauffman stillborn; and 2 sisters - Malinda Wingard and Clara Wingard both were from Montezuma, Georgia. The family would like to extend a sincere THANK YOU to everyone for the prayers and many acts of kindness during Edna’s later days and since her passing. Funeral Services will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, January 2, 2009 at the Melvin Yoder residence at 2605 560th St. S.W. in rural Kalona. Minister in charge is Rudy Miller. Burial will be in the Peter Miller cemetery. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday at the Melvin Yoder residence and will continue all day on Thursday. The Yoder-Powell Funeral Home of Kalona is in charge of the arrangements.

Gerald Eugene Mercer was born icon on November 9, 1924 in Packwood, IA, a son of Edward and Iva Ramsey Mercer. He grew up in the Packwood area and graduated from Packwood High School in 1942. He served in the US Army Air Corps during WW II. He was united in marriage to Helen Marie Oliver on June 16, 1946 in Packwood. Besides working in the Education Field, Gerald worked at Louden Machinery in Fairfield and at the Sears Farm Store in Ottumwa. Gerald received his BS Degree from Iowa Wesleyan College, his Masters Degree from Northeast Missouri State and his Specialist in Education Degree from the University of Missouri. He taught in Hedrick and was Principal at Ollie before moving to the Tri-County district in 1968, where he was Superintendent until his retirement in 1990. Gerald was a member of the Thornburg United` Methodist Church and the James Murphy American Legion Post # 319. He enjoyed vacationing and traveling with his family, pheasant hunting, fishing, golfing, bird watching and enjoyed the flowers from their flower bed. Gerald died following a brief illness on Saturday, January 10, 2009 at University Hospitals & Clinics in Iowa City. He lived 84 years, 2 months and 1 day. He is survived by his wife Helen Marie of Keswick; a daughter Deborah (John) Atwell of Rock Falls, IL; sons Gary (Terry) Mercer of Indianola,IA, Bryan (Renee) Mercer of Ashton, MD and Matt (Tinell) Mercer of San Antonio, TX; 10 Grandchildren: Chris Mercer, April (Andrew) Blackford, Gene Mercer, Clark Mercer, Greg Mercer, Zachary Mercer, Marissa Mercer, Drake Mercer, Danielle Mercer, and Chase Mercer; 4 great grandchildren: Shasta Mercer, Sam Mercer, Jessie Mercer, and MaKenzie Blackford; a brother Dale Mercer of Folsom, CA; sisters: Mary Huddleston of Burlington, IA, Arlene Nelson of Fairfield, IA and Jean Marshall of Packwood, IA. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Wayne, Richard, and Raymond Mercer, and a sister Reva Myers. A memorial fund has been established for the James Murphy American Legion Post # 319, The Keswick First Responders and The Thornburg United Methodist Church.

KEOTA - Marjorie M. Glider, age 90, of Keota, formerly of Wellman, died Wednesday, January 14, 2009, at Maplewood Manor in Keota, following a brief illness. Marjorie was born icon October 28, 1918, near 76 Center in Washington, County, to Alex and Hannah (Pulver) Moody and graduated from Keota High School in 1937. She then attended cosmetology school in Des Moines and worked as a beautician in Des Moines and Iowa City a few years. Marjorie then worked in the telephone office in Iowa City. On June 29, 1963 she married icon Carl Glider at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. Following marriage the couple made their home in Wellman. Marjorie entered Maplewood Manor in 2000. She was a member of the United Church of Faith in Keota and American Legion Auxiliary and was a former member of Asbury United Methodist Church in Wellman. Survivors include several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband: Carl in 1991; four brothers: Dale, Dwight, Ted and Keith Moody and five sisters: Ethel Meyers, Maude Moyer, Blanche Sparks, Bessie Snyder and Beatrice in infancy. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 17, 2009, at the Powell Funeral Home in Keota, with Rev. Dennis Hopes officiating. Burial will be at Wellman Cemetery in Wellman. Visitation will be from 12:00 p.m. until service time on Saturday, January 17, 2009, at the funeral home. A memorial fund has been established for Maplewood Manor or the United Church of Faith. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Keota is caring for Marjorie and her family.

SIGOURNEY - Thomas Jefferson Hardesty, age 67, of Sigourney, died Friday, October 29, 2004, at his home. Tom was born icon February 22, 1937, in Sigourney to Samuel and Mabel (Liechti) Hardesty. He grew up in Sigourney and graduated from Sigourney High School in 1955. After receiving his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1964 he lived in New York City, Washington D.C. and Augusta, West Virginia before moving back to Sigourney in 1986. He was a journalist for the Oskaloosa Herald, retiring in 1999. He brought joy and entertainment to many with his piano recitals at nursing homes and hospitals in Keokuk and Mahaska counties. Survivors include two sons: Max Hardesty and Jude Hardesty both of Portland, Oregon; two daughters: Ilana Hardesty of Watertown, Massachusetts and Tamara Hardesty of Manchester, Connecticut; two grandchildren: Trent Hardesty and Porshe Hardesty and one brother: Samuel Ray Hardesty of McKinney, Texas, and his good friend Carol Dillon of Sigourney.He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother: Michael William Hardesty and his sister Miriam Anne Holloway. A memorial gathering will be held at the Reynolds-Powell Funeral Chapel in Sigourney at 4:00 P.M. Wednesday, November 3, 2004, during which friends and family will be invited to share their stories and reminiscence of Tom Hardesty. There will be no visitation before the memorial. gathering. Donations may be made in Tom’s name to the Sigourney Public Library Building Fund, 203 N. Jefferson, Sigourney, IA 52591. Reynolds-Powell Funeral Chapel and Cremation Service is handling the arrangements.

WEBSTER- Ralph H. Schlicht, was born icon June 6, 1931, in Reinbeck, Iowa, the son of Herman J. And Vera (Willer) Schlicht Jr.. He graduated from Reinbeck High School and Iowa State University in Ames. He was in the US Navy from 1950-1954, where he was an airman on the USS Valley Forge. On June 3, 1954, he was united in marriage to Martha Jane Fry, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. He farmed and taught school for 2 years at English Valley High School, where he started the Vo-Ag program. He was a member of the Webster United Methodist Church, the Webb Lodge, Masons and Farm Bureau. He enjoyed model trains and woodworking. Ralph died on Wednesday, December 31, 2008, at the Sigourney Care Center, following an extended illness at the age of 77 years. He is survived by his wife Martha Jane of Webster; a brother Francis Schlicht of Cedar Rapids, IA; a stepsister Geneen Heinrich of Wellsburg, IA; 2 step brothers- Dennis Larsen of Cedar Rapids, IA and Dallas Larsen of Rogers, AR; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a half brother Claire Schlicht. Celebration of Life Service will be held 10:30 am on Saturday, January 3, 2009, at the Webster United Methodist Church in Webster. Rev. John Tunnicliff will officiate. Graveside services will be held 9:30 am on Saturday, at the Sorden Cemetery near Keswick, IA with military rites. Visitation will be on Friday, January 2, 2009, from 3- 7 pm with a Masons Service at 7:00 pm at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North English. A general memorial fund has been established.

L. Opal Mason
January 19, 1903 - December 31, 2008

North English–L. Opal Wymore, McNally Mason was born icon January 19, 1903 in Keokuk County, Iowa the daughter of Austin and Ida Marie Rebecca (Williams) Wymore. She grew up in the Blakesburg, Ottumwa and North English areas. Opal graduated from North English High School in 1921. Opal was united in marriage to James McNally on December 19, 1942 he later died on December 13, 1952. She later married icon Dow Mason on August 26, 1967. Opal worked many years as a bankteller for the Farmers Savings Bank in North English. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church were she served as a treasurer for the Altar and Rosary Society for many years. Opal enjoyed playing the piano, playing cards with friends and family and socializing at the North English Community Center. Opal became a resident at the English Valley Care Center in North English on August 1, 1995. Opal died Wednesday December 31, 2008 at the English Valley Care Center after a brief illness at the age of 105 years. She is survived by her daughter: Pat (Gene) Denison of South English; a son: James McNally of Chapel Hill, North Carolina; three grandchildren: Deanne (Dan) Cornelison of Van Meter, Doreen Ferris and Ayla McNally both of Chapel Hill, NC and six great grandchildren: Chase and Cole Ferris, Max, Molly and Chelsea Cornelison and Jessica Drake and three great great grandsons: Tristan, Mason and Kael Drake and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, four brothers: Carl, Kenneth, Floyd and Herschel Wymore and two sisters: Louie McMickle Spears and Ida Marie Casady and a grandson-in-law: Scott Ferris. Celebration of Life Service will be 11:00 am Saturday, January 3, 2009 at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in North English. Fr. Pat Lumsden will officiate. Visitation will be Saturday from 9:00am to 10:30 am at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North English. Burial will be in the Mt Calvary Cemetery in Marengo. Memorials are for the St. Joseph Altar and Rosary Society or North English Community Center.

Lloyd Swain

Williamsburg - Lloyd E. Swain was born icon November 28, 1936 near Marengo, Iowa, the son of Herbert and Hannah (Misel) Swain. He attended rural schools and graduated from Williamsburg High School. Lloyd was united in marriage to Nancy Byram on June 7, 1959 at the Millersburg Methodist Church. Together the couple has lived on a farm east of Williamsburg. Lloyd was a life long farmer and worked at Fetzer Amoco for 32 years. He enjoyed spending time with his family, collecting Oliver tractors and Studebaker cars and trucks. Lloyd died Sunday, January 4, 2009 at his home after congestive heart failure at the age of 72 years. He is survived by his wife: Nancy of Williamsburg; three children: Diane Yoder of Williamsburg, Brian (Geri) Swain of Oxford and TeriLea (Terry) Schwarting of Marengo; five grandchildren: Michelle Swain, Melissa Swain, Shantel Schwarting, Jesse Yoder and ShaeLyn Schwarting; two step grandchildren: Jeremy Biwer and Cory Miller; three great grandchildren: Aaron and Matthew Perdue and Sierra Henry; a sister: Shirley Wachal of Cedar Rapids. Lloyd was preceded in death by his parents. Celebration of Life Service will be 10:30 am Wednesday, January 7, 2009 at the Uhlmann-Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Williamsburg. Pastor Richard Meyer will officiate. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at the funeral home. A general memorial has been established.

Williamsburg - Jessica ReAnn Stallman, was born icon on May 15, 1994, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, a daughter of Craig D. and Kathy A. (Costanzo) Stallman. She attended Williamsburg High School where she was a freshman. Her school activities included volleyball, FCCLA, marching band, concert band, jazz band, drama and National Honor Society. She was also involved in 4-H and Club Volleyball. She regularly attended The Loft and New Covenant Bible Church. She enjoyed horseback riding, photography, scrapbooking, and anything outdoors. She loved teaching her brother and sister how to ride horses and she enjoyed trail rides with family and friends. She loved her school, her friends and her family, but most of all, she loved her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She will be missed by all who knew her. She was a great daughter, sister, friend, and teammate. Jessica went to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday, January 12, 2009, at the University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City, after a courageous battle with HLH, an autoimmune disease, at the age of 14 years. She is survived by her parents Craig and Kathy, a brother Ty and sister Mickala, all of Williamsburg. She was preceded in death by her grandmother Eileen Stallman, and her mamaw and papaw Costanzo. Celebration of Life Services will be held 10:30 AM on Friday, January 16, 2009, at the Harvest Baptist Church, in Williamsburg. Visitation will be on Thursday from 4-8 PM at the Uhlmann-Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Williamsburg. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established for the Children’s Miracle Network.
