Myrlin S. “Pete” Strausser was born icon on June 9, 1915 in Millersburg, IA the son of Christopher and Mary L. Cheney Strausser. He grew up and attended school in Millersburg. Myrlin found work as young man in Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Chicago. He eventually ended up in Ames, Iowa where he met Wilda Seeger. They were married icon on Thanksgiving Day, 1941.Soon after, Myrlin joined the US Army and served in the Pacific during World War II and later in the Korean War. After the war they settled in North English in 1945. He purchased and operated the family house moving business fulltime or parttime for nearly 30 years. In 1965 he took a job as a nursing assistant at the VA Medical Center in Iowa City and retired in 1980. Myrlin proudly earned his GED from Kirkwood Community College in his 50’s. He was an active member of the North English Christian Church and a former member of the Odd Fellows Lodge. After his retirement he enjoyed woodworking, making items for his family and friends. He also enjoyed raising flowers and sharing them and their seeds with the people he met. Myrlin died following a brief illness at the English Valley Care Center in North English on Saturday, January 31, 2009. He lived 93 years, 7 months and 22 days. He is survived by daughter Lynn (David) Hickman of Aurelia, IA; son Lanny (Ann) of Waterloo; grandchildren Jeanette Cornforth, Jon Hickman, Sara Strausser, Adam Strausser, Erin Strausser and three great grandchildren: Aimee Hickman, Tyler Cornforth and Chloe Hickman. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Wilda in December 2002, grandson Joel Hickman; 4 sisters: Violet Smith, Betty Ward, Lorane Colon and Lola Hindman; 8 brothers: William, Dean, Donald, Gerald, George, Kenneth, Clarence and Richard Strausser. A Celebration of His Life will be held at 10:30 AM on Tuesday, February 3, 2009 at the North English Christian Church with Pastor Kirk Statler officiating. Burial will be in the North English Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Monday, February 2, 2009 from 4:30 PM to 7:00 PM. A memorial fund has been established for the North English Christian Church.

Williamsburg - Ruth J. Sandersfeld was born icon May 4, 1919 near Homestead, Iowa, the daughter of Basil and Frieda (Schuermann) Zuber. She attended St. John’s Parochial School. Ruth was united in marriage to Elmer Sandersfeld on February 2, 1941 at St. John Lutheran Church near Homestead. The couple lived and farmed in the rural Homestead area until moving to Williamsburg in 1973. Ruth worked for Colony Village Restaurant for a number years until retiring 2001. She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, Ladies Aid and enjoyed playing cards going for walks and spending time with friend talking and eating out. Ruth died Tuesday, February 3, 2009 at her home in Williamsburg after a sudden illness at the age of 89 years. She is survived by a number of nieces and nephew. Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; husband in 1978; a brother: Eugene Zuber and four sisters: Lydia Olson, Hildegard Stohlmann, Norma Rudin and Erna Wardenburg. Celebration of Life Service will be 10:30 am at St. John Lutheran Church near Homestead on Saturday, February 7, 2009. Burial will be in the St. John Cemetery. Pastor Wayne Woolery will officiate. Visitation will be Friday from 4 to 8pm at the Uhlmann-Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Williamsburg. Memorials are for the St. John Lutheran Church.

KALONA - Mary M. Helmuth was born icon June 12, 1918 in Yoder, Kansas the daughter of Harvey C. and Mary (Fry) Miller. Her family moved to Kalona when she was 12 years old. On October 16, 1941 she was united in marriage to John C. Helmuth in Kalona. She was a charter member of the Sharon Bethel Church. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, quilting, gardening, and playing games. Mary died on Thursday, February 5, 2009 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City following a short illness at the age of 90 years. Mary is survived by 6 children - Lynn Helmuth (Ethel) of Kalona; David Helmuth (Char) of Atwater, MN; John Dale Helmuth (Shirley) of Kalona; Bertha Yutzy (Ray) of Kalona; Floyd Helmuth (Charlene) of Kalona; James Helmuth of Phoenix, AZ; a daughter-in-law Barbara Helmuth of Kalona; 24 grandchildren; 49 great grandchildren; a brother Harvey Miller of Kalona; and 2 sisters - Susan Yoder of Riverside; and Edna Miller of Kalona. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in March of 1992; a daughter-in-law Esther Helmuth, and 8 brothers and 3 sisters. Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 8, 2009 at the Sharon Bethel Church in rural Kalona. Minister’s in charge are Delmar Bontrager, Gabriel Beachy, Jacob Yoder, and Lamar Ropp. Burial will be in the North Gingerich Cemetery in rural Kalona. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 7, 2009 at the Sharon Bethel Church, with the family present from 1-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. A memorial fund has been established for the Sharon Bethel Church. The Yoder-Powell Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

KEOTA - Johnathon Dietze, age 19, of Keota, died Saturday, February 7, 2009, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, following a long illness. Johnathon was born icon August 31, 1989, in Iowa City, to Gerald, Jr. and Laura (Guthridge) Dietze. He graduated from Keota High School in 2007 and attended Indian Hills Community College, taking courses in Computer Drafting. Johnathon also worked at Subway in Washington and Fairfield. He loved his dog, Cerb, his horse, Domino, camping, fishing, working on his truck and making people laugh. Survivors include his parents: Gerald, Jr. and Laura Dietze of Keota; two sisters: Trisha of Rubio and Cathrine of Keota; grandparents: Dr. Troy and Diane Guthridge of What Cheer, Gerald Dietze, Sr. of Williamsburg and Margaret Urban of Sumpter, South Carolina and girlfriend: Cassie Riegel of Birmingham. He was preceded in death by his grandmother: Cheryl Dietze. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, February 10, 2009, at the United Church of Faith in Keota, with Rev. Dennis Hopes officiating. Burial will be at Keota Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Monday, February 9, 2009, at Powell Funeral Home in Keota. A memorial fund has been established for the University of Iowa Pediatric Activity Fund. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Keota is caring for Johnathon and his family.

Williamsburg - Karen Kay Hohle, was born icon May 23, 1950, in Sigourney, Iowa, the daughter of Levirne “Butch” and Della (Northup) Allum. She grew up in Webster and graduated from English Valley High School in 1968. She has lived in Williamsburg for the past 30 years, where she had her own cleaning business. She was a Chicago Cubs and Iowa Hawkeye fan, she enjoyed fishing and camping, but most of all she enjoyed her family and grandchildren. Karen died from brain cancer on Monday, February 9, 2009, at the English Valley Care Center in North English, Iowa, at the age of 58 years, 8 months and 17 days. She is survived by a son Chad Hohle of Dillon, CO; 2 daughters- April (Brad) Otto of Oxford, IA and Kimberly (Chad) Yearian of Williamsburg, IA; 5 grandchildren- Anna Dystkra of Iowa City, Chloe and Gwen Yearian both of Williamsburg, and Caleb and Dillon Otto both of Oxford; and a special friend Richard Ayers of Williamsburg. She was preceded in death by her parents Butch & Della Allum, and a brother Rickie Allum. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, February 14, 2009, at the Uhlmann-Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Williamsburg. Chaplin Maurie Campbell will officiate. Burial will be in the Sorden Cemetery, rural Webster, IA. Visitation will be on Friday, February 13, 2009, from 4 PM to 7 PM at the Uhlmann-Powell Funeral Home in Williamsburg. A general memorial fund has been established.

Netha Marie Meyer passed away at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa on Friday, February 13, 2009 following a lengthy illness at the age of 88 years. She had been hospitalized since December 21st, 2008. Netha Marie Noyes was born icon at her grandmothers home in Honey Creek Township, Iowa County, Iowa on November 24, 1920 to Henry and Gladys (Croft) Noyes. She attended Honey Creek Township School #11 for eight years, Marengo High School for two years and graduated from Iowa City High in Iowa City in 1937. Netha married icon Harvey William Meyer on September 18, 1937 at Bertha, Minnesota at the Lutheran parsonage by Rev. George Eschenbacher. They resided in Williamsburg for one year, then moved to their farm one mile west of town where Netha lived until being hospitalized. Netha was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Williamsburg on February 20, 1938. She served in St. Paul Lutheran Altruistic Society, Lutherans Women’s Guild, and Nightlights. She served as the first woman treasurer of St. Paul, treasurer and corresponding secretary of the Eastern Iowa LWML. She was a member of the Iowa County Preservation Commission, Iowa County Sesquicentennial Committee and the Williamsburg Sesquicentennial Committee and had served as treasurer of the Iowa County Historical Society. Netha became interested in genealogy research in 1985 and was a charter member of the Iowa County Genealogy Society. Through the Iowa county Genweb she provided hundreds of people throughout the United States with genealogy research. Through this research Netha made countless friends. For decades Netha bowled with her friends of Gahring Dozers. She loved to watch her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren compete in sports and participate in other school events. She loved to hear her family sing. Netha is survived by children: Sandy (Ed) Ficken of Williamsburg, their children Chris (Richard) Cloeter, Michael (Margi) Ficken and Netha (Mike) Larsen-Schrimpf, Monte Meyer of Dateland, Arizona, Virginia (Gary) Rickard of Troy, Ohio, and Rita (William) McDonald of rural Parnell and their children Pat and Sam, six great grandchildren Netha and Rich Cloeter, Kelly, Michael and Megan Ficken, and Jordan Larsen, a brother Dale Noyes (Shirley) of Victor, sisters-in-law Ilene Meyer of Deep River and Helen (Barney) Fetzer of Williamsburg, and very special friends Karen Wichmann and Leona Wardenburg. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Harvey who passed away on September 18, 1969 on their 32nd wedding anniversary. Celebration of Life Service will be 10:30 am on Monday, February 16, 2009, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Williamsburg. The Rev. Carl Cloeter will officiate. She will be laid to rest at the St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be on Sunday from 2-7 pm at the Uhlmann-Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Williamsburg.THE NETHA MEYER MEMORIAL FUND has been established and will be used for the preservation of Netha’s extensive genealogy collection. Eunice Lucille Kyle

Eunice Lucille Kyle was born icon February 12, 1915 near Washington, Iowa the daughter of Walter and Margaret (Brooks) Kyle. She accepted Christ and was baptized on her confession of faith and was a member of the Sharon Bethel Church. Eunice spent many years teaching in various locations including local schools around Washington and Kalona, also schools in Arkansas, Indiana, Nebraska and Wisconsin. In 1984 she moved a trailer to Cephas Kauffmans and lived there until August of 2003, when due to declining health, she moved in with Cephas’ in her own room. Iowa City Hospice gave very able and appreciated care and support beginning December 16, 2008. In her later years Eunice did taxi work for the Amish and enjoyed gardening and bonding as an elderly friend to her close neighbors, the Grabers and Kauffmans. Sylvia Ropp, a church sister and neighbor provided transportation on sundays and also many hours of companionship. Fannie Miller, also a church sister, has been a long time friend of Eunice. Eunice died on Sunday, February 15, 2009 at her home in rural Kalona at the age of 94 years and 3 days, after an 8 years decline of health due to Alzheimer’s. Eunice is survived by a sister - Naomi Tinnes of Washington; 2 nieces - Shirley (Lloyd) Reed of Nebraska, Angela (Keith) Nofziger of Colorado; 3 great nieces - Tonya Popp, Amber Kauffman and Lisa Kriederman. She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister Florence, a brother-in-law Cloyce Tinnes; a nephew Edwin Tinnes, and a niece Claudia Short. The family as well as the Cephas Kauffman family would like to express their deepest appreciation for the many prayers and acts of kindness shown them during this time. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 19, 2009 at the Sharon Bethel Church in rural Kalona. The minister’s in charge are Delmar Bontrager, Jacob Yoder, Gabriel Beachy and Lamar Ropp. Burial will be in the Sharon Bethel Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday at the Sharon Bethel Church. The Yoder-Powell Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Homestead–Edna Leona Wetjen was born icon February 3, 1913 near Homestead, Iowa, the daughter of Otto and Rosina (Von Ahsen) Trimpe. She was baptized on March 2, 1913 and confirmed March 28, 1926. Edna attended St. John Parochial School. Edna was united in marriage to George Wetjen on January 16, 1941 at St. John Lutheran Church. The couple lived and farmed in Benton County from 1947 to 1964 when they moved back to the Homestead area. Edna had worked for the Bill Zuber Restaurant in Homestead for 30 years. She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church. Edna enjoyed gardening and spending time with her grandchildren. Edna died Sunday, February 22, 2009 at the Highland Ridge Care Center in Williamsburg due to complications of age at the age of 96 years. She is survived by two sons: James Wetjen of Amana and Ron (Judy) Wetjen of Homestead; five grandchildren: Tony Wetjen, Scott Wetjen, Tammy Wetjen-Kesterson, Heath Wetjen and Georgia Wetjen; four great grandchildren; a brother Paul (Mildred) Trimpe of Williamsburg; four sisters: Ida Strunk of Williamsburg, Viola Lemon of Davenport, Esther (Harvey) Huedepohl of Williamsburg and Luella Barnes of Cedar Rapids. Edna was preceded in death by her parents, husband George, a son Gordon, two sisters: Lorena Moennich and Ruth Koehn and three brothers: Arnold, Alfred and Raymond Trimpe. Celebration of Life Service will be 10:00 am Wednesday, February 25, 2009 at St. John Lutheran Church near Homestead. Pastor Wayne Woolery will officiate. Burial will be in the St. John Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4 to 7:00 pm at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Williamsburg. Memorials are for St. John Lutheran Church, Lutheran Interparish School or Highland Ridge Care Center.

Shaull Catherine

Williamsburg – Catherine Renee Shaull was born icon December 15, 1953 in Belle Plaine, Iowa, the daughter of Harlyn (Gump) and Elaine (Meyer) Shaull. She graduated from Williamsburg High School in 1972. Cathy worked in Iowa City for 2 years until being transferred to Colorado in 1975 to Northwestern Bell-AT&T. She enjoyed her niece Emily and nephew Todd, her cats, gardening her flowers and fishing (no matter the size). Cathy died Friday, February 20, 2009 in Arvada, Colorado after a sudden illness at the age of 55 years. She is survived by her mother: Elaine Shaull; a brother: Larry J. (Colleen) Shaull all of Williamsburg; a nephew and niece: Todd (Melanie) Shaull of Cedar Rapids and Emily (Shane) Phillips of Williamsburg; five great nieces and nephews: Patrick, Breanna and Kyla Shaull and Landon and Hanna Phillips. Cathy was preceded in death by her father in 1999; grandparents: John and Evelyn Meyer and Earnest and Emma Shaull. Celebration of Life Service will be 10:30 am Friday, February 27, 2009 at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Williamsburg. Fr. Pat Lumsden will officiate. Burial will be in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Williamsburg. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 pm Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials are for Safe Haven for Iowa County. Honorary Casket Bearers: Lou Ann Martinson, Margie Lillis, Nina Bullers, Kevin Dane, Roger Nidey and Mark Newhaus. Casket Bearers: Verlyn Reick, Les Duncalf, Shane Phillips, Todd Shaull John Tiernan, Jr., John Schwarting.
