Jacob N. "Jake" Yoder was born icon July 3, 1951 in rural Kalona, Iowa, the son of Noah A. and Catherine (Miller) Yoder. He has lived in the Kalona community all of his life. He worked at the Kalona Sales Barn until 1994. He has since provided transportation for the local Amish community. He was a member of the Fairview Conservative Mennonite Church. Jake died on Monday, May 11, 2009 at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City following a short illness at the age of 57 years. Jake is survived by a sister - Maryann Bremer and husband Robert of Iowa City; 2 brothers - Ezra Jay Yoder and wife Wilma of Goshen, Indiana; Joel N. Yoder and wife Cindy Stutzman of Denver, Colorado; 4 nieces; a nephew; 4 great nieces; 6 great nephews; and a step great niece. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a great nephew. Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 14, 2009 at the Fairview Conservative Mennonite Church in Kalona. Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday at the Yoder-Powell Funeral Home in Kalona where the family will greet friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. A memorial fund has been established for the Fairview Conservative Mennonite Church, Pleasantview Home and Washington County Hospice.

Leonard Doyle (Johnnie) Hollingsworth, 88, died Saturday, May 16, 2009, at University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City. A celebration of his life will be held at the Powell Funeral Home in North English on Tuesday, May 19, 2009 with Revs. Joel Love and David Wilkening officiating. Visitation will be from 4-7 PM on Monday, May 18th at the funeral home with Masonic Rites following. Burial will be in the Pennington Cemetery near Sigourney. A memorial fund has been established for the American Heart Association and the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center. Leonard Doyle (Johnnie) Hollingsworth was born icon on July 31, 1920, on a farm southeast of Hayesville, IA, a son of Ira and Myrtle Kinkade Hollingsworth. He attended several country schools in Keokuk County and graduated from Martinsburg High School in 1938. He was united in marriage to Bessie Jean Wilkening on August 21, 1940 in Lancaster, MO. They moved to a farm east of North English in 1942 and farmed for 66 years. Johnnie was a former member of the Kinross and English Valleys School Boards. He was a 50 year member of the Kinross Masonic Lodge, had served on the English Valleys Cooperative Creamery Board, the Knoll Ridge Country Club Board, and as a Keokuk County Supervisor from 1981 to 1984. Johnnie died on Saturday, May 16, 2009, at University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City at the age of 88 years, 9 months and 16 days. Johnnie is survived by his wife Bess of rural South English; a son Gary ( Brenda ) Hollingsworth of of Coralville, IA; daughters Kathy (Sid) Moore of South English, IA and Jayne (Joel) Love of Reinbeck, IA; 10 grandchildren: Mark Hollingsworth of Los Angeles, CA, Mandy Hollingsworth of Coralville, IA, Matthew Hollingsworth of Centennial, CO, Brad (Brenda) Moore of North English, IA, Brent (Brooke) Moore of Newhall, IA, Brian (Tracy) Moore of Altoona, IA, Brock (Danielle) Moore of North English, IA, B. J. (Anne Tedore) Love of Chicago, IL, Jonathan (Jessie) Love of Cedar Falls, IA, and Geoffrey (Jess) Love of Ames, IA. 12 great grandchildren: Shay, Lexie & Clayton Moore, Grace & Jack Hollingsworth, Bailey Alderson, Brayden & Bowen Moore, Cody & Karsyn Moore, and Ashton & Emmerson Moore; sisters Helen Reed of Ottumwa, IA and Ruth Coble of Dubuque, IA; a sister-in-law Mary Hollingsworth of Waterloo, IA; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Howard, Chester and Willard Hollingsworth, and sisters Maxine Bond, Ethel Hayes, Opal Parr and Margaret Newman.

WELLMAN - Irene Cordelle Groff was born icon November 28, 1915 in Wellman, Iowa the daughter of Edward and Minnie (Perrin) Blumenstein. She graduated from Wellman High School in 1934. On April 14, 1940 she was united in marriage to Willard Groff in Iowa City. Irene has lived in the Wellman community all of her life. She cleaned homes in Iowa City for 12 years and worked at the University of Iowa Hospital for 12 years. She was a member of the Methodist Church. Irene died on Saturday, May 23, 2009 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City at the age of 93 years. Irene is survived by a son: Ron (Cindy) Groff of Wellman; two daughters: Sharrie Groff of Wellman; Darlene Gingerich of Iowa City; 8 grandchildren; 2 step grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren and 5 great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, three brothers: Wayne, Merle and Clayton, and two sisters: Marjorie Miller and Vonetta Brannon. Graveside services will be 10:30 am Tuesday, May 26, 2009 at the Wellman Cemetery. Rev. Marlene Janssen will officiate. Visitation will be Monday from 2:00 to 8:00pm at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Wellman. Memorials are for the Wellman Ambulance or the Iowa City Hospice.

KEOTA - Geraldine (Gerry) Margaret Rezac, age 92, of Keota, passed away on Saturday, May 23, 2009, at Maplewood Manor in Keota. Gerry was born icon August 25, 1916, in East Lancaster Township, Keokuk County, Iowa, the daughter of Mathias and Mary (Conrad) Osweiler. She attended school at Ss. Peter and Paul in Clear Creek and St. Mary’s in Keota. In February, 1937, she married icon Vincent Moroney in Marshalltown, Iowa. He died December 22, 1970. On April 22, 1972, she married icon former Park Rapids, Minnesota Chief of Police, Frank J. Rezac. He died February 18, 1981. Gerry lived in Park Rapids, Minnesota for 52 years and worked at Bishops Department Store for many years. She moved to Keota in April of 1999, where she was a member of Holy Trinity Parish - St. Mary Catholic Church. Survivors include four sisters: Lillian Coffman of Keota, Irene Clubb of Sigourney, Lorraine (Stan) Kolosik of North English and Marlene (LaVerne) Pennington of Winter Haven, Florida; sister-in-law: Nadine Osweiler of Keota; three step-children: Bonnie (Dick) Carpenter and Sharon Rezac (Gary) Andersen, all of Park Rapids and Joe (Barb) Rezac of Baxter, Minnesota along with her loving step-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Gerry was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands and three brothers: Richard Osweiler, Cyril Osweiler and Louis Osweiler. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 28, 2009, at Holy Trinity Parish - St. Mary Catholic Church in Keota, followed by a memorial mass. Rev. Bernie Weir will officiate. Burial will be at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Nevada, Iowa. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Holy Trinity Parish or Iowa City Hospice. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Keota is caring for Gerry and her family. The family wishes to extend special thanks to Iowa City Hospice and the staff at Maplewood Manor.

Loretta Greiner, age 89, of Washington, formerly of Keota, died Tuesday, June 2, 2009, at the Washington County Hospital. Loretta was born icon March 4, 1920, near Keota, to Frank and Lucy (Haupert) Britten. She attended St. Mary’s Parochial School and graduated from Keota High School in 1938. On September 24, 1940, she married icon Cyril F. Greiner at St. Mary Catholic Church in Keota. The couple lived in the Harper, North English and Keota communities. Loretta moved to Washington in the fall of 2006. She was a member of Holy Trinity Parish-St. Mary Catholic Church and its Altar and Rosary Society. Survivors include three sons: Jerome A. and wife Marlene Greiner of Cedar Rapids, Gary Greiner of Cedar Rapids and Marvin F. Greiner and wife Jeannie of Keota; one daughter: Kathy Brinning and husband Roger of Keota; 18 grandchildren; 40 great grandchildren; and a brother Raymond Britten of Parnell. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband: Cyril on November 25, 1997; daughter: Donna Jean Greiner in October of 1988; two grandchildren: Joe Greiner and Casey Greiner and three sisters: Lucille Britten in infancy, Helen E. Kaska, and Dorothy Peck; and a brother John “Jack” Britten. Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, June 5, 2009, at Holy Trinity Parish-St. Mary Catholic Church in Keota, with Rev. Charles Fladung officiating. Burial will be at Holy Trinity Cemeteries-St. Mary’s Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 4, 2009, at Powell Funeral Home in Keota, where there will be a wake service at 7:00 p.m. A memorial fund has been established for Holy Trinity Parish - St. Mary Catholic Church.

Blanche Rosina Montross was born icon on November 6, 1912, north of Millersburg, IA, the daughter of James McClelland and Laura Louise Emal Gerard. She graduated from Millersburg High School in 1930 and attended Cedar Rapids Business School. Blanche worked several years at the creamery in Millersburg. She was united in marriage to Hubert Maxwell Montross on June 25, 1934, in Kirksville, MO. They farmed northwest of Millersburg until moving into town in August 1965. Blanche was a member of the Millersburg United Methodist Church and the UMW. She and Hubert wintered in Florida and Texas for many years. She enjoyed her garden and belonged to the local garden club. She also liked camping, fishing and feeding the birds. Blanche died in her home on Tuesday, June 2, 2009, at the age of 96 years, 6 months, and 27 days. She is survived by six children: Charles (Mary Ellen) Montross of Deep River, IA; Jeanette (Joe) Bender of Paris TX; Keith (Linda) Montross of Iowa City, IA; Linda (David) Slotwinski of Gainesville, FL; Phyllis (Donald) Gorsch of Millersburg, IA; James (Gloria) Montross of The Woodlands, TX.; 13 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. Blanche was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in September 1990, 2 grandchildren, brothers Walter Gerard, Evan Gerard, Clayt Gerard, and Glen Gerard, and sisters Elsie Fetzer, Hazel Reinhart, Lulu Faas, and Mabel Tanke. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:30 AM on Saturday, June 6, 2009 at the Millersburg United Methodist Church with Pastor Ben Wilson officiating. Visitation will be at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North English on Friday, June 5, 2009 from 4 PM to 8 PM. Burial will be in the Community Cemetery near Millersburg. A memorial fund has been established for the Millersburg United Methodist Church and Iowa City Hospice.

Travis Joseph Filben, was born icon on August 4, 1989, in Iowa City, Iowa, the son of Ken and Traci (Filben) Shaffer. He was a 2007 graduate of Keota High School. He was employed at Systems Unlimited in Washington. He was a member of the Iowa National Guard. He has lived in Washington, Hannibal, MO and Keota. He enjoyed music, singing, working on cars and collecting wooden ships. Travis died on Sunday, June 7, 2009, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics of injuries sustained in an auto accident, at the age of 19 years. He is survived by his parents Ken & Traci Shaffer of Keystone; 2 brothers: Raymond Shaffer and Colby Shaffer both of Keystone; maternal grandparents John and Ruth Vest of Keota. Celebration of Life Service will be held 2:00 pm on Thursday, June 11, 2009, at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Wellman. Burial will be in the Wellman Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2-8 pm on Wednesday, at the Powell Funeral Home in Wellman. A general memorial fund has been established.

Williamsburg – Dorothy Marie (Smith) Gorsh was born icon August 11, 1923 in Lincoln township, Iowa County near Victor, Iowa, the daughter of Henry Sr. and Minnie (Schmidt) Smith. Dorothy attended Lincoln #2 School and graduated from Victor High School in 1941. Dorothy was united in marriage to Alfred Erwin Gorsh on April 14, 1945 at the St. James Lutheran parsonage in Victor. The couple lived in the rural Williamsburg area until 1991 when the moved to town. Dorothy was a homemaker and helped Alfred on the farm. She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Williamsburg. Dorothy died Wednesday, June 10, 2009 at the Colonial Manor in Amana at the age of 85 years. She is survived by five children: Terry Gorsh and fiancee Kim Escher of Boone, Iowa, Karen Schmidt and husband Stan of Homestead, Gary Gorsh and wife Mary of Davenport, Larry Gorsh and wife Pam of Independence, Missouri and Becky Gorsh Stohlmann and husband Ken of Phoenix, Arizona; 6 grandchildren: Curt Gorsh and wife Keri, Jordan Gorsh and wife Steph, Brenda Dexter and husband David, Lacy Gorsh, Alan Gorsh and Kristin Schmidt Solberg and husband Jason; four great grandchildren: Cody and Chloe Solberg and Luke and Lexi Gorsh. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, husband in 2001, a sister: Jennie Steffen and three brothers: Walter, Henry Jr. and William L. Smith. Celebration of Life Service will be 10:30 am on Friday, June 12, 2009 at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Williamsburg. Pastor Carl Cloeter will officiate. WELLMAN-Bo Hammen, age 2, of Wellman, died Wednesday, June 10, 2009, at University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City and was welcomed into Heaven. Bo was born icon September 13, 2006, to Marty and Simone (Pogue) Hammen, at the Washington County Hospital, then was airlifted to University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City. He always laughed and smiled bringing joy and happiness to everyone he touched. Bo enjoyed watching Sponge Bob Square Pants, looking at lights, having his picture taken, traveling with his family, and laughing at everything. Bo will be deeply missed and will remain in our hearts forever. Survivors include his loving parents: Marty and Simone Hammen of Wellman; four sisters: Natasha, Rebecca, Sorcha and Harley, and one brother: Shawn, all of Wellman; grandfathers: Marvin Hammen and special friend Maureen Robertson of Keota and Brian Pogue of Coventry City, England; three aunts: Angie (Rick) Adrian of Iowa City, Tami (Todd) Clements of Iowa City and Jenna Pogue and friend Stuart Liggins of Coventry City, England; one uncle: Patrick (Jo) Pogue of Darlington, England, five cousins and family friends Donald Nunley and Travis Hedges. He was preceded in death by his grandmothers: Betty Hammen and Teresa Pogue. Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, June 15, 2009, at Holy Trinity Parish-St. Mary Catholic Church in Keota with Rev. Charles Fladung officiating. Burial will be at Holy Trinity Cemeteries-St. Mary Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 14, 2009, at the Wellman Fire Station, where there will be a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. A memorial fund has been established for the family. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Keota is caring for Bo and his family. The family would like to thank the Wellman Fire and Rescue Team, Ambulance Service, UIHC Air Care Team, Dr. Lori Christensen, Janine Petitgout, Dr. Daniel Bonthius, Dr. Jose Manaligod, and all of the doctors, nurses, therapists, housekeepers and staff at the UIHC for the wonderful and compassionate care provided to Bo and the entire family throughout his life.
