KEOTA - Dorothy L. Singleton, age 82, of Keota, died Friday, April 16, 2010, at Manor House Care Center in Sigourney. Dorothy was born icon March 20, 1928, in Keswick, Iowa, to Alfred and Nina (Cave) Fitzsimmons and graduated from Keota High School. On January 19, 1950, she married icon Dale Singleton at the Keota Methodist Church. The couple lived in Keota where Dorothy was a waitress at the Central Café for over 30 years. She was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church in Keota, Rebekah Lodge and Order of the Eastern Star, where she was a Past Noble Grand. Survivors include a daughter: Pam Riffel and husband Mark of What Cheer; son: Ken Singleton and wife Jennifer of Cedar Rapids; four grandchildren: Jason (Tammy) Riffel, Justin (Erin) Riffel, Nicholas and Julianne Singleton; three great grandchildren: Chase Sellers, Kobe Riffel and Bleyke Mullen and a brother: Jim Fitzsimmons of Guthrie, Oklahoma. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband: Dale in 1987 and two sisters: Elizabeth Seitsinger and Mary Shafer. Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, April 19, 2010, at Powell Funeral Home in Keota, with Rev. Dennis Hopes officiating. Burial will be in Keota Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 18, 2010, at the funeral home. A memorial fund has been established for the Keota Q.R.S. and Breast Cancer research. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Keota is caring for Dorothy and her family.

Russell B. Schaffner was born icon on March 18, 1929, north of Millersburg, Iowa, a son of Lloyd Everet and Aura Sophia Smith Schaffner. He attended rural Rose Hill School and graduated from Millersburg High School. Russell was united in marriage to Betty Marie Himler on January 11, 1951. They farmed near Millersburg and Deep River. Russell loved fishing, farming, trapping, gardening and square-dancing. He became a resident of the English Valley Care Center in North English in January 2008. Russell died at the Care Center on Friday, April 16, 2010, at the age of 81 years and 21 days. He is survived by his wife Betty of rural Deep River, IA; seven children: Gary (Marnita) Schaffner of North English, IA; Patricia (Arlen) Fisher of North English, IA; Stephen Schaffner of North English, IA; Charlene Oehl of Millersburg, IA; Mary (Bryan) Greene of North English, IA; David Schaffner of Deep River, IA; Deborah (David) Grimm of Williamsburg, IA; 21 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; a brother Richard (Bonnie) Schaffner of Millersburg, IA; and an aunt Phyllis Smith of Deep River, IA. He was preceded in death by his parents and a great granddaughter Joely Schaffner. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10 :00 AM on Monday, April 19, 2010 at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North English with Bryan Greene and Carol Dale officiating. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Sunday, April 18, 2010, from 5 PM to 7 PM. Burial will be in the Zion Cemetery, rural Williamsburg.

Lucille Rachel Yoder was born icon December 7, 1920 in rural Milford, Nebraska, the daughter of Edward Joseph and Fannie (Roth) Beckler. She attended Pleasantview District #47 rural school. She was baptized at the East Fairview Mennonite Church in Mildford. In 1940 she moved to Iowa. On February 14, 1943 she was united in marriage to Joseph Max Yoder in Milford. They made their home in the Wellman and Kalona communities where Lucille was a homemaker. She was a member of the Lower Deer Creek Mennonite Church. She enjoyed gardening, flowers and bird watching. Lucille died on Saturday, April 17, 2010 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City at the age of 89 years. Lucille is survived by four children Gaylord Yoder (Shirley) of Kalona; Wanda Yoder (Kenneth) of Kalona; Weldon Yoder (Patty) of Billings, Montana; Waneta Neuzil (Steve) of Kalona; seven grandchildren Chris Yoder, Jeremy Yoder, Devin Yoder, Nicholas Stoddard, Nathan Stoddard, Erika Rodriguez, Nikita Yoder; two great grandchildren Max and Macy; three brothers Clayton Beckler (Berniece) of Milford, NE; Maurice Beckler (Irene) of South Hutchinson, KS; Norman Beckler (Daine) of Philadelphia, TN; and four sisters Ethel Beckler of Glendale, AZ; Grace Stauffer (Morris) of Beaver Crossing, NE; Inez Stauffer (Thurlowe) of Phoenix, AZ; and Faye Beckler of Glendale, AZ. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Max, two sons Lyle and Gordon, and a sister Margaret Kauffman. Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, April 19, 2010, at the Lower Deer Creek Mennonite Church in rural Kalona. Pastor Don Patterson and Pastor Dick Swartzendruber will officiate. Burial will be in the Lower Deer Creek Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 3-6 p.m. on Sunday, April 18 at the Yoder-Powell Funeral Home in Kalona. A memorial fund has been established for Iowa City Hospice and Lower Deer Creek Mennonite Church.

High Amana-Jerry Randall Riggs was born icon April 3, 1935 in Fairfield, Iowa, the son of Roscoe and Oshia (Wood) Riggs. He graduated from Fairfield High School. Jerry was united in marriage to Ruth Frescoln on June 10, 1956 in Batavia, Iowa. Jerry owned and operated Quincy Tire and Service Center in Ottumwa, before retiring. He was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps. The couple lived in Fairfield and Ottumwa before moving to High Amana in 2002. Jerry was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Williamsburg, KAABA Shrine, Scottish Rite Freemasonry, Clinton Lodge 15 AF & AM Freemasonry of Fairfield and the Amana Heritage Society. Jerry enjoyed gardening, fishing, traveling, camping, hunting (especially mushrooms) and woodworking. Jerry died Wednesday, April 21, 2010 at his home at the age of 75 years. Jerry is survived by his wife Ruth of High Amana; a daughter: Andrea (Lanny) Haldy of Amana; two grandsons: Zachary Neumann of Sacramento, CA and Benjamin Neumann of Amana; a twin brother: James (Rose) Riggs of Norwalk; three sisters: Ruth Wilson of Rogers, Arkansas, Charlotte Klise of Wakarusa, Kansas and Shirley (Gene) Freeman of Bettendorf. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: Harry Riggs and Wayne Riggs and a sister: Vera Whitmore. Celebration of Life Service will be 10:30 am Saturday, April 24, 2010 at St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Williamsburg with Pastor James Parks officiating. Visitation will be Friday from 5:00 to 8:00 pm at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Williamsburg. Burial will be Saturday at 1:30 pm at the Batavia Cemetery. Memorials are for the St. Paul United Methodist Church, Amana Heritage Society, Essence of Life Hospice in Amana or the American Heart Association.

William Ambrose Hester, of North English and 2238 Palmer Circle in Iowa City died April 23, 2010 at University of Iowa Hospitals at 1034 PM of an aneurysm. Bill was born icon April 30, 1922, in Emmetsburg, Iowa to Ambrose and Teresa (McGinty) Hester. He was the seventh child of nine. The Hester family moved to Cedar Rapids during the depression and Bill lived there until his twenties. Bill volunteered for the Navy at the onset of World War II and served 3 years. Before he shipped out, he met and married icon Mary Barron, a nurse from Ft. Madison, on April 9, 1942, in Cedar Rapids. Upon his return, Bill and Mary made their home in North English, where they lived for 65 years and raised six children. Bill and Mary were married icon for 68 years. Bill and brother Michael (MJ), and then friend Benny Osweiler, established a farm and feed service on Main Street in North English after moving into town. Called Hester Farm Service, they ran their company for five years. Bill then worked 30 years for Cargill/Nutrena Feeds as a territorial sales representative, semi-retired and worked as a car salesman for B& B Motors in Belle Plaine. Bill volunteered and dedicated much of his adult life to the Association for Retarded Citizens and served as national President for that organization. He also served on the City Council for the town of North English. He joked about, lived and loved being a Democrat his entire life. Bill is survived by his wife Mary of 68 years, who now resides with her daughter in Iowa City. He is also survived by 4 of his children, 11 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. His surviving children include: Terry (Sharon) of Ft. Meyers, Florida and Davenport, Iowa and their son Greg (Denise) of Bettendorf; John (Linda) of Lone Tree and their children Angie of Lone Tree, Shelly Martin (Ron A.) of West Liberty, Jody (Dave R.) of Bozeman, MT, and Kelly Howell (Rick) of Solon; Bill and Mary’s special daughter Sandy of North English, Jim (Candy) of Des Moines, and their children Phil (Chris) and Steve (Stacy) of North English, Laura Stallman (Ray) of Amana, and Brian (Marsha) of Conroy; Rosemary Adam of Iowa City and her children Amy (Dave) Johnson of North Liberty and Christopher (Amanda) Fry of Conroy. He was preceded in death by his parents and all but 1 of his siblings, 2 of his children: Francis and Tommy, and one granddaughter Tracy (Hester) Weisrock. Funeral Mass will be held 10:30 AM on Monday, April 26, 2010, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, in North English. Father Joseph Roost will preside. Burial will be in the North English Cemetery. Visitation will be on Sunday, from 3-6 PM, with a prayer service at 5:00 PM at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North English. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established for the Iowa City Systems Unlimited.

Richard Frederick "Dick" Hall

North English Richard Frederick “Dick” Hall was born icon on November 19, 1944 in Marengo, Iowa, a son of Orlando D. and Phyllis Janet Torrance Hall II. Dick grew up in Iowa County, graduating from English Valleys High School in North English. He attended Cornell College in Mt Vernon and the University of Iowa. Dick served in the US Army in Vietnam. He was a member of the New Life Fellowship in Keswick and had served with the Keokuk County Jail Ministry since August 1991. He enjoyed reading and was very active in the church. Dick died on Saturday, April 24, 2010 at the VA Medical Center in Iowa City. He lived 65 years. He is survived by a brother Orlando “Don” (Lynda) Hall of Chicago, IL and two first cousins Judy Hergesheiner of Thousand Oaks, CA and Diane Chase of Burnsville, MN. Dick was preceded in death by his parents. Celebration of Life Memorial Services will be held at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North English, IA at 10:30 AM on Wednesday, April 28, 2010. Pastor Chester Render will officiate. Visitation will be from 9:30 AM until service time on Wednesday. Burial will be in the North English Cemetery. A memorial fund has been established for the New Life Fellowship in Keswick.

John Joseph Canott

Kalona–John Joseph Canott was born icon November 20, 1920 near Wellman, Iowa, the son of John A. and Pearl M. (McClelland) Canott. He graduated from Wellman High School in 1939. John served in the United States Army from 1942 to 1945. John was united in marriage to Elsie May Arch on January 20, 1945 in Pinner, England. He worked as a mechanic on cars and tractors at the Glider and Canott Garage in Wellman for many years. The couple lived in the Wellman and Kinross communities until moving to Kalona in 1985 when John retired. John was a member of the Asbury United Methodist Church in Wellman, Commander of the American Legion for 15 years and a lifetime member of the Riverside VFW. John enjoyed cooking, baking, working in his garden, playing cards and was an avid reader of many books. He made great potato salad, pickled beets and refrigerator pickles. John died Friday, April 30, 2010 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City at the age of 89 years. He is survived by two sisters: Mildred (Keith) Lemley of Lone Tree and Evelyn Leigh of Wellman and many nieces and nephews. John was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 57 years, Elsie in October 2002, his brother: Francis in June 2007 and his sister Virginia Townsend in September 2007. Celebration of Life Service will be 10:00 am Monday, May 3, 2010 at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Wellman. Rev. Rich Pippert will officiate. Visitation will be Sunday from 3:00 to 6:00 pm at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Wellman Cemetery with Military Rites. Memorials are for the Wellman Senior Center or Iowa City Hospice.

KEOTA - Rozella J. Geil, age 84, of Keota, died Friday, April 30, 2010, at Halcyon House Care Center in Washington. Rozie was born icon June 5, 1925, in Radcliffe, Iowa, to John and Rachel (Tjelta) Stole. She attended rural schools and graduated from New Providence High School. She then received her Elementary Education Certificate from Ellsworth Junior College, B.A. in Education from William Penn College and M.A. from the University of Iowa in 1974. On May 4, 1947, Rozie was married icon to Joe Doud in Garden City, Iowa. Rozie lived in Eldora, Hubbard and Cedar Rapids, teaching school in Zearing, Hubbard and Cedar Rapids. On December 28, 1957, she married icon Joseph Ward Geil in Cedar Rapids. The couple made their home in Keota where Rozie taught second grade at Mid Prairie Elementary School in Wellman from 1960 until retiring in 1987. Rozie served as Deputy County Superintendent of Schools in Hardin County from 1946-1948, served as Chairman of Ladies Day and other offices of Lagos Acres Country Club, was a member of the United Church of Faith, Women United and Fortnightly Club. Rozie also served on the Care Review Board for Maplewood Manor. In 1972 Rozie was named the Outstanding Elementary Teacher of America. She enjoyed golfing, gardening, her flowers, sharing time with her family, baking and cooking and most of all being with her grandkids and great grandkids. Survivors include sons: Raymond (Janice) Doud of Schaumburg, Illinois, Charles (Mary) Geil of Keota and Michael (Dora) Geil of Fairbanks, Alaska; daughters: Rita Jo (Jim) Flynn of Harper, Shari (Michael) Schleef of Columbus Junction and Cynthia (Randy) Tarrence of Keota; 20 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; three sisters: Alvina Brinkmeyer of Hubbard, Ilene (Wayne) Wiley of Albion and Marilyn (Bill) Carlson of Cumberland, Wisconsin and sister-in-law: Margaret Stole of Prairie Farm, Wisconsin. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband: Joe in 2000, sister: Janice Carter and brother: Irvin Stole. Celebration of Life Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 6, 2010, at the United Church of Faith in Keota, with Rev. Dennis Hopes officiating. Burial will be at Keota Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 5, 2010, at Powell Funeral Home in Keota. A memorial fund has been established for Lagos Acres, the Wilson Memorial Library and Hospice of Washington County. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Keota is caring for Rozie and her family.

Paula Jae Thomas was born icon on September 10, 1956 in Sigourney, IA, the daughter of David Allen and Ruth Marie McCombs Bouslog. She grew up on a farm near South English, graduated from English Valleys High School and the American Institute of Business in Des Moines. She was employed at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in the Rheumatology Department from 1977 to September 1992. Paula was united in marriage to Michael Thomas on March 21, 1981 in the English River Church of the Brethren near South English. Paula served on the English Valleys School Board and the English Valleys Dollars For Scholars committee for many years. She also worked with a variety of organizations and businesses following her retirement from the University. Paula died on Sunday, May 2, 2010 at the Keokuk County Health Center in Sigourney at the age of 53 years, 7 months and 22 days. She is survived by her husband Michael Thomas and son Jeremy Thomas both of South English; siblings: Kathryn (William) Durbin of Parkersburg, IA; Karyl (Steve) Thomas of Oskaloosa, IA; Sherry (Daniel) Strohman of North English, IA; Sally (Charles) Davey of Indianola, IA; Kent (Christine) Bouslog of South English, IA; Kevin (Sue) Bouslog of South English, IA; Marci Bouslog of Omaha, NE; Melodie Bouslog of South English, IA; Kelly Bouslog of Centerville, IA; mother-in-law Marge Thomas of What Cheer, IA; brother-in-law Jim Thomas of What Cheer, IA; sister in-law Peggy (Alan) Stromberg of Marengo, IL and a number of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and their families. She was preceded in death by her parents and sisters Meri and Pamela Bouslog as well as her grandparents Jay and Zola McCombs and Paul and Mary Bouslog, uncles Bill Dennis, Merle Fishel, Wayne McCombs and father-in-law Dick Thomas. A private family Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:30 AM on Wednesday, May 5, 2010, at the English River Church of the Brethren near South English. Public visitation will be at the Powell Funeral Home in North English on Tuesday, May 4, 2010 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM. A memorial fund has been established for Keokuk County Hospice.
