KALONA - Sarah Miller Helmuth was born icon August 30, 1927 in Kokomo, Indiana, the daughter of Menno and Katie (Schlabach) Mast. She grew up in Indiana and moved to Iowa in 1945. On October 7, 1947 she was united in marriage to Edward F. Miller in Kalona. They made their home in rural Kalona where Sarah was a homemaker. Sarah and Edward spent 2 years involved in mission work in Ukraine. Edward died in September of 2006. On September 29, 2007 she was united in marriage to Eli C. Helmuth in Kalona. Eli died in October of 2008. She was a member of the Sharon Bethel Church. Sarah died Sunday, May 2, 2010 at her home in rural Kalona at the age of 82 years. Sarah is survived by 6 children David Lee Miller (Martha) of Kalona; Lucy Stoltzfoos (Roman) of Kinzers, PA; Elaine Miller of Kalona; Evelyn Miller (Steve) of Hutchinson, KS; Nancy Miller of Iowa City; Louise Miller of Kalona; stepson L.J. Helmuth (RoseMary) of Whiteville, TN; 26 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; 5 step grandchildren; 3 step great grandchildren; and a sister - Mary Hershberger (Mark) of Kalona. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands Edward Miller and Eli Helmuth; 3 sons - Arden, and infants Raymond and Howard; a daughter Mary Catherine Miller; 3 brothers - David Mast, Andrew Mast, and infant Abraham Mast; 2 sisters - Esther Mast and infant Susanna Mast. Funeral Services will be 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 5, 2010 at the Sharon Bethel Church in rural Kalona. Ministers in charge are Jacob Yoder, Delmar Bontrager and Gabriel Beachy. Burial will be in the Sharon Bethel Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 2-8 p.m. on Tuesday at the Sharon Bethel Church where the family will be present from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday. The Yoder-Powell Funeral Home in Kalona is in charge of the arrangements.

Emery H. Miller

Emery H. Miller was born icon November 3, 1931 in rural Kalona, Iowa, the son of Henry B and Edna (Miller) Miller. In his youth he accepted Christ as his savior and was baptized in the Old Order Amish Church and remained a faithful member until his death. On March 3, 1955 he was united in marriage to Edna Marie Bontrager. To this union were born icon 4 sons and 3 daughters - Simon Duane Miller (Minerva) of Brighton; Rosemary Beachy (Paul) of Kalona; Elvin Dale Miller (Wilma) of Kalona; Verlene Faye Yoder (Wesley) of Brighton; Miriam Grace Mast (Marlin) of Brighton; Everett Lee Miller (Rosalyn) of Kalona; and David Lynn Miller (Katie Anna) of Wellman. Emery died on Sunday, May 2, 2010, at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City from injuries suffered in a buggy accident at the age of 78 years, 5 months and 29 days. Also surviving Emery are 62 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; 4 brothers - Chester Miller (Mary) of Riverside; Norman Miller (Alma); Morris Miller (Mary Jane); Vernon Miller (Nina); and a sister Mary Pearl Mast (Fred) all of Kalona. He was preceded in death by his parents; 2 grandchildren - Sharon Marie Yoder and Krystal Marlene Miller; a great granddaughter - Angela Faith Miller; and a sister-in-law Freda (Ropp) Miller. Funeral Services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, May 6, 2010, at the Albert Yoder residence at 5652 Eagle Ave SW in rural Kalona. Minister in charge is Elmer T. Miller. Burial will be in the Brenneman Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday until 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday at the Everett Miller residence at 1965 Johnson Washington Rd in rural Kalona and after 6:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Albert Yoder residence. The Yoder-Powell Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Williamsburg - Delmar H.E. Iburg was born icon April 11, 1925 near Williamsburg, Iowa, the son of Otto and Elsie (Newkirk) Iburg. He attended Immanuel Lutheran School. Delmar was united in marriage to Phyllis Sandersfeld on August 29, 1948 at Immanuel Lutheran Church. The couple had 50 wonderful years together. They lived and farmed in Iowa township for 35 years, until moving to Williamsburg in 1983. After farming all his life Delmar worked at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City on the maintenance crew for 14 years, retiring in 1997. During his retirement he enjoyed playing cards, bowling, gardening, mowing lawns and going to the Landmark Restaurant to meet with the AM coffee drinkers. He was a life time member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. Delmar was a loving, father, brother, grandfather and great grandfather. Family was very important to him. He also enjoyed attending all family activities and gathering’s especially the 4th of July at Jason’s house. He will be greatly missed by all. Delmar is survived by two sons: Gary (Brigitte) Iburg and Andrew (Lisa) Iburg all of Williamsburg; three daughters: Julie Iburg of Williamsburg, Peggy (Rick) Holtz of Kenosha, Wisconsin and Rachel (Jim) Higgins of Kennesaw, Georgia; nine grandchildren: Heidi Petersen, Jason (Angie) Iburg, Curtis (Darla) Iburg, Amy (Jeremy) Provin, Erica (Kyle) Gunderson, Christopher Holtz, Paige & Leigh Higgins and a step grandson: Michael (Jess) Higgins; eleven great grandchildren; two brothers: Robert (Elaine) Iburg of Williamsburg and Kenneth (Joleen) Iburg of Hudson, Wisconsin; three sister-in-laws: Elaine Wardenburg, Pat Sandersfeld and Joan Harlan) Heitman and two brother-in-laws: Louis (Helen) Sandersfeld and John Gerard. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Phyllis in 1998 and two brother-in-laws: Vern Sandersfeld and Orville Wardenburg and a sister-in-law: Evelyn Gerard. Celebration of Life Service will be10:30 am Friday, May 7, 2010 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church near Williamsburg. Pastor Richard Meyer will officiate. Burial will be at the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Williamsburg. Memorials are for Essence of Life Hospice or Immanuel Lutheran Church.

KEOTA - Edward W. Greiner, age 82, of Keota, died Tuesday, May 4, 2010, at the McCreedy Home in Washington. Ed was born icon April 9, 1928, in Keota, to Robert and Rosa (Adam) Greiner and graduated from West Chester High School. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. On December 28, 1968 Ed married icon Kathryn Millane in Fairfield. A lifelong resident of the Keota community, Ed farmed for 57 years. He was a member of the Keota V.F.W. Post # 4716, Knights of Columbus and St. James Catholic Church in Washington. Ed enjoyed fishing, hunting, sightseeing and having his family and friends visit. Survivors include his wife: Kathryn of Keota; six children: Carol (Mike) Biesanz of McKinney, Texas, Sara (Liam) Carolan of Park Ridge, Illinois, Joan (Gary) Edwards of Richmond, Virginia, Ed J. (Tandy) Greiner of Keota, Karen (Troy) Christensen of Cedar Rapids and Kathy Greiner and fiancee Mike Naslund of Oswego, Illinois; 11 grandchildren: Matthew and Eric Biesanz, Evan Carolan, Nathan, Adam and Stephen Edwards, Michael O’Connor, Andrew and Kassidi Greiner, Ava and Caden Christensen; three sisters: Marie Hammes of Fairfield, Sister Madeline Mary Greiner of Omaha, Nebraska and Dorothy Weber of Washington and one brother: Bob Greiner of Keota. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister: Marge McMains. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 8, 2010, at St. James Catholic Church in Washington with Rev. Paul Appel officiating. Burial will be at Holy Trinity Cemeteries - St. Mary Cemetery in Keota. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Friday, May 7, 2010, at Powell Funeral Home in Keota, where there will be a KC Rosary at 7:00 p.m. A general memorial fund has been established. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Keota is caring for Ed and his family.

Dorothy Elizabeth McClellen was born icon August 28, 1923 in North English, Iowa, the daughter of Orson and Esther (Miller) Kirkpatrick. She graduated from North English High School. On July 4, 1942, she was united in marriage to David Arthur McClellen in Macon, Missouri. Dorothy has lived in the Wellman community since 1950. Dave and Dorothy owned and operated R & M Body Shop in Wellman where Dorothy was the bookkeeper. She also worked for Wellman Telephone Company, and then at Wellman Savings Bank as a teller for 17 years retiring in 1982. She was a member of the Asbury United Methodist Church, American Legion Auxiliary, and TTT Society. She enjoyed playing golf in her retirement years. Dorothy died on Saturday, May 8, 2010, at Parkview Manor in Wellman at the age of 86 years. Dorothy is survived by two sons - Ron McClellen and Dan Olson of Iowa City; Michael McClellen and Sherry Sweeney of Hills; five grandchildren, eight great grandchildren; and special family members Susan McClellen and Ginn Azboy. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a brother Keith Kirkpatrick; and three sisters Maxine Baugh, Roxine Ruegsegger, Evelyn Reynolds, and Fern Fancher Baugh. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 12, 2010, at the Powell Funeral Home in Wellman. Rev. Rich Pippert will officiate. Burial will be in the Wellman Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. on Tuesday at the Powell Funeral Home. A memorial fund has been established for Wellman Scofield Public Library.

Marion Lee Barnes was born icon August 17, 1947 in Iowa City, Iowa, the son of Jack and Ada Arlene (Binley) Barnes. He attended Wellman High School. He served in the United States Navy. He married icon Fatima Rahali in Morocco, they later divorced. He had worked as a custodian at the University of Iowa Hospital. Marion died Wednesday, May 12, 2010, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Iowa City at the age of 62 years. He is survived by two sons - Mustapha Steve Barnes and Hafid David Barnes of North Liberty; six grandchildren; step father Owen Bringman of Wellman; six brothers - Rollin Barnes, Albert “Barney” Barnes, Steve Barnes, Jack Barnes all of Mount Pleasant; Kenny Barnes of Coralville; Mark Bringman and wife Angie of Washington; and a sister Della Stafford and husband Jay of Aurora, Colorado. He was preceded in death by his mother Ada Arlene Bringman. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 15, 2010 at the Powell Funeral Home in Wellman. Pastor Mark Larson will officiate. Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Friday at the Powell Funeral Home in Wellman. A general memorial fund has been established.

KEOTA - Leander M. Berg, age 96, of Keota, passed away Friday, May 14, 2010, at Maplewood Manor in Keota, of declining health, with his family by his side. Leander was born icon May 26, 1913, in Harper, to Nick and Magdalena (Adam) Berg. On February 1, 1938, he married icon Mary J. Merz. He farmed in the Clear Creek community most of his life until retiring to Keota in 1977. He and Mary loved dancing, traveling and a good card game. Survivors include seven children: Mary Ellen and husband Max Vail of Des Moines, Michael and wife Kathleen Berg of Harper, Peg and husband Bill Bruty of Rockledge, Florida, Kathy and husband Dave Peden of West Branch, Daniel and wife Jeanne Berg of Iowa City, Roger Berg of Keota and Alan and wife Judy Berg of Sigourney; 19 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren; one great great granddaughter; one sister: Gen Altenhofen of Harper and three brothers: Ivo Berg of Riverside, Bernard Berg of Wellman and Jerry Berg of Sigourney. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife: Mary in 2006; sister: Marie Merz; brothers: Lavern, Cletus and Urban Berg; grandson: Nicholas Berg; great grandson: Nolan Bruty and great granddaughter: Maggie Rogerson. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 18, 2010, at Holy Trinity Parish - St. Mary Catholic Church, with Rev. Charles Fladung officiating. Burial will be at Holy Trinity Cemeteries - St. Elizabeth Cemetery in Harper. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Monday, May 17, 2010, at the Powell Funeral Home in Keota, where there will be a wake service at 4:00 p.m. A memorial fund has been established for Keokuk County Hospice or the Clear Creek Heritage Association. Williamsburg, formerly of Brooklyn- Shirley J. Niemann was born icon August 13, 1930, in Brooklyn, Iowa, the daughter of Howard Alfred and Mary Jane “Jennie” (Morrison) Patten. She attended Brooklyn Elementary and graduated from Brooklyn High School in 1948. On July 4, 1959, she was united in marriage to Charles Robert “Bob” Niemann, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Brooklyn. She worked as an aide in the Brooklyn Schools and worked for the Brooklyn Chronicle and Free Press. She lived in the Brooklyn community before moving to Highland Ridge in Williamsburg in 2004. Shirley was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Brooklyn, the PEO Sisterhood and the Brooklyn American Legion Auxillary. She enjoyed golfing, playing bridge and singing in various choirs. Shirley died on Saturday, May 15, 2010, at the Brooklyn Community Estate in Brooklyn at the age of 79 years. She is survived by a son Eric & Sara Niemann of Plattsburg, MO; and a grandson Ethan Niemann. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband. Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held 1:00 PM on Tuesday, May 18, 2010, at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Williamsburg. Pastor Kirk Statler will officiate. Burial will be in the Brooklyn Cemetery, Brooklyn. A memorial fund has been established for the Citizens Scholarship Fund of BGM.

Ferne Mary Troyer was born icon February 16, 1923, in rural Parnell, Iowa the daughter of Samuel and Mary (Yoder) Fisher. She attended the Oakland School in Green Township. On May 18, 1948 she was united in marriage to Cleo Troyer at the West Union Mennonite Church. They made their home in Kalona where Ferne was a homemaker, and she worked as a cook for the Mid-Prairie Community School District for 14 years. She was a member of the Lower Deer Creek Mennonite Church, and the Lioness Club. Ferne loved to quilt and made each grandchild a quilt for their high school graduation. She also loved to garden and tend to her flower beds. She was best loved for her homemade applesauce, cinnamon rolls, graham cracker fluff salad, homemade pies and the cookies she always had for the grand kids. Ferne died on Tuesday, May 18, 2010, at the Pleasantview Home in Kalona at the age of 87 years. Ferne is survived by four children - Richard Troyer (Gayle) of Cummings, GA; Ronald Troyer (Maribeth) of Phoenix, AZ; Randy Troyer (Pat) of Kalona; Beverly Strother (Jon) of Mount Vernon; nine grandchildren - Brent Troyer, Brandy Keener, Ryan Troyer, Courtney Troyer, Tanner Troyer, Lucas Troyer, Samantha Troyer, Amber Rhodus, Taylor Strother; and 5 great grandchildren - Olivia, Jonah and Celia Keener, Caleb and Jordan Troyer. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Cleo; six brothers - Harold, Glen, Orlo, Leonard, Waldo, Vernon ; and six sisters - infant Velda, Leona Miller, Erma Kauffman; Lavanda Eash, Maggie Hochstetler, and Luetta Johnson. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 22, 2010, at the Lower Deer Creek Mennonite Church in rural Kalona. Pastor Don Patterson will officiate. Burial will be in the Lower Deer Creek Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 2-8 p.m. on Friday, at the Yoder-Powell Funeral Home in Kalona where the family will greet friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. A memorial fund has been established for Lower Deer Creek Mennonite Church, Pleasantview Home, and Iowa City Hospice.
