Mary Jean Johnston was born icon on January 26, 1922, near North English, IA, the daughter of Lawrence Cyrus and Ida V. Neal Van Dee. She grew up in the North English community. Jean was united in marriage to Ward Allen Johnston on September 23, 1942, in North English. They farmed near White pigeon until moving into North English in 1965. Jean managed the Carson’s Clothing store until it closed and then worked at Bob’s U-Save. Jean worked at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics from 1975 until her retirement in 1987. Jean and Ward spent many happy winters snowbirding in Rockport, TX. Jean was a lifelong member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. She was a member of the Red Hat Society and the VFW Auxiliary. Jean enjoyed her family, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She also enjoyed reading, doing crossword puzzles, and her Monday night card playing at the Community Center. She enjoyed playing “hand & Foot: with her two sisters and brothers-in-law. She died suddenly at her home in North English on Wednesday, May 19, 2010, at the age of 88 years, 3 months and 23 days. Jean is survived by daughters: Julie Thein of North Liberty, IA and Mary Lu (Rick) Ayers of North English, IA; sons: Gerald (TokSun) Johnston of Buford, GA and Michael (Honore) Johnston of Davenport, IA; 12 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren; a brother Alfred Van Dee of North English; sisters Nellie (Milo) Cobb of Vinton, IA; Reta Albert of Corpus Christi, TX, She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Ward in May 2001, a son David, grandson David Michael, and brothers Charles, Floyd and Donald. A funeral mass will be held at 10:30 AM on Monday, May 24, 2010 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in North English, with the Rev. Joseph Roost presiding. Visitation will be at the Powell Funeral Home in North English from 4 PM to 8 PM on Sunday, May 23, 2010 with a prayer service at 7:30 pm. Burial will be in the North English Cemetery.
A general memorial fund has been established.

Kenneth White

Parnell- Kenneth G. White Sr, was born icon January 24, 1940 in Lynn, MA the son of Henry C. and Gladys M. (Comeau) White. He graduated from Lynn High School, BS from School of Anestisia at the Walter Reed Hospital, BA at the University of Maryland and his PHD at Michigan State. Kenneth served as a Captain in the U.S. Army during Vietnam. Ken was a Nurse Anesthetist during his working life. He was united in marriage to Marlene Niedbala on October 1, 1966 at the Walter Reed Chapel. They lived in numerous places before moving to Parnell, IA 5 years ago. Ken was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Williamsburg; the National Trap Shooting Association and the American Legion. Kenneth died on Wednesday, May 19, 2010, at his home near Parnell, at the age of 70 years. He is survived by his wife Marlene of Parnell; a daughter Michelle Krupp and husband Dave of North Liberty and a son Ken and wife Katie White Jr, of Gurnee, IL; four grandsons: Trey, Kyler, Coleson and Andrew; a brother Henry White and a sister Evelyn Saulnier both of Salem MA. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Bertha Durst was born icon December 12, 1917 in Wapello, Iowa the daughter of Harry and Abby (Genzler) Lewis. On September 27, 1940 she was united in marriage to John Durst Sr. in Kahoka, Missouri. They made their home in rural Wellman. Bertha worked as a cook at Keota Community School for 21 years, and then cooked at the Wellman Senior Center for 10 years. She was a member of the Asbury United Methodist Church, Rebekah’s, Eastern Star, HNS Club, 76 Community Club, and DAR in Keota. Bertha passed away on Sunday, May 23, 2010 at the United Presbyterian Home in Washington at the age of 92 years. Bertha is survived by 4 sons - John and wife Sydna of Wellman; Mike of Keota; Richard and wife Bonnie of Wellman; Duane of Fairfield; and 2 daughters - Nancy Fisher of North English; Johnette Criss of Coralville; 20 grandchildren; 42 great grandchildren; a great great grandchild; and a sister Mabel Law of Muscatine. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband John Durst Sr., a daughter-in-law Carol Durst; 3 brothers and 2 sisters. Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 27, 2010, at the Powell Funeral Home in Wellman. Rev. Rich Pippert will officiate. Burial will be in the Wellman Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. on Wednesday at the Powell Funeral Home where the family will greet friends from 6-8 p.m. A memorial fund has been established for Asbury United Methodist Church, Hospice of Washington County, and Wellman Senior Center.

Williamsburg - John "Jack" V. Driscoll, Jr, was born icon June 16, 1923, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa the son of John Vincent and Rosina Pearl Rush. He was baptized, confirmed and was a lifelong member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Williamsburg. He graduated from Williamsburg High School in 1941 and attended Iowa State University. Jack was united in marriage to Kathleen V. Clear on August 30, 1945, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Holbrook. He was a life long farmer and resident of the Williamsburg Community. Jack was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Iowa County Fair Board, County, Iowa & American Angus Associations, Hampshire & National Swine Registries, Farm Bureau and the NFO. He was a member of the National Catholic Society of Forresters, and a Troy Township Trustee. Jack had three major priorities: his family, his Catholic faith and his farm, Walridge Farms, where he lived his entire life and which he and his father brought to national prominence in the 1940s. He enjoyed farming and exhibiting livestock, dancing and going for drives. Jack died on Wednesday, May 26, 2010, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City, following a brief illness, at the age of 86 years. He is survived by his wife Kathleen; 2 sons: Elliott (Rita) Driscoll and Erle (Renee) Driscoll all of Williamsburg; 10 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; and a sister Virginia Driscoll (Richard) Breaker of Golden, CO. He was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral Mass will be held 10:30 AM on Saturday, May 29, 2010, at St. Mary’s Church, Williamsburg, Fr. Joseph Roost officiating. Burial will be at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Williamsburg. Visitation is 2-8 PM on Friday, May 28, 2010, with a prayer service & rosary at 6:00 PM, at Powell Funeral Home, Williamsburg. A memorial fund has been established.

KEOTA - Dorothy K. Greiner, age 86, of Keota, died Friday, May 28, 2010, at Maplewood Manor in Keota. Dorothy was born icon January 8, 1924, in Keokuk County, Iowa, to William and Margaret (Rettler) Greiner and received her education in Shinbone and Clear Creek country schools. She lived in the home where she was born icon until moving to Maplewood Manor in April of 2008. Dorothy milked cows for 50 years and also enjoyed raising chickens. She was a member of Holy Trinity Parish - St. Mary Catholic Church. Survivors include her brother: Danny Greiner and wife Hazel of Brighton; three nieces and three nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother: Donald Greiner and sister-in-law: Edith Greiner. A memorial mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 2, 2010, at Holy Trinity Parish - St. Mary Catholic Church in Keota, with Rev. Paul Appel officiating. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 2, 2010, at the church. A memorial fund has been established for the Holy Trinity Cemetery Fund, Keota Fire Department or Hospice Compassus. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Keota is caring for Dorothy and her family.

Gerald Leroy Wyant, was born icon August 28, 1920, to Alfred and Coral Mae (Humphrey) Wyant, living in the rural Millersburg area. He graduated from Millersburg High School in 1938, working with his family farming, threshing, making molasses and milking. Gerald married icon Hazel Mae Wolf on January 17, 1946, who died August 12, 1990, from cancer. To this union was born icon two daughters. He proudly served in the Army, stationed in Japan. Gerald spent most of his years farming, milking, and raising livestock on his farm 2 ½ miles east of Deep River. He also partner farmed with his son-in-law Gary Worrall for a number of those years. He remarried on October 12, 1991, to Eleanor (Tompkins) Dietrich and spent retirement years enjoying wood crafting and traveling. He was a member of United Church of Deep River and attended Cornerstone Church, near Millersburg. He was a founding member of the Poweshiek County NFO, a former member of the Deep River School Board and supporter of the East Iowa Bible Camp near Millersburg. Gerald went home to his Lord on Tuesday, June 1, 2010, passing peacefully at the English Valley Care Center. He is survived by his wife Eleanor, Williamsburg; 2 daughters: Vera(Gary) Worrall, Montezuma and Nancy (Eldon) Newberry, Amana; grandchildren: Gary Patrick (Kim) Worrall, Park View, Danny Worrall, Belle Plaine and Scott (Angie) Worrall, Montezuma; great grandchildren: Breanna, Bryce, Katie, Jordan, McKenna and Brody; 9 step children Helen Warnick, Arlene Warnick, Juanita Sarver, Esther Lown, Dolores Grimm, Ethel Cronbaugh, Carl Dietrich, Keith Dietrich and Ronald Dietrich; 21 step grandchildren; and 13 step great grandchildren. brother Arland (Reva) Wyant, North English; Preceding him in death are two sisters Helen Horras and Marilyn Gorsch, and his parents.

Thomas H. Charlton

Thomas H. Charlton, 71, of Wellman, IA, died suddenly Wednesday, June 2, 2010, in Iowa City. Dr. Charlton was born icon August 17, 1938, in Scarborough, ON, Canada, the son of Thomas H. (Harry) Charlton and Winnie (Taylor) Charlton. He received a BA in Anthropology in 1960 from the University of Toronto, and a PhD in Anthropology from Tulane University in 1966. He taught at the University of Toronto and at Grinnell College before joining the University of Iowa’s Department of Anthropology in 1967, where he continued teaching until his death. Dr. Charlton’s primary research focused on the archaeology of Mesoamerica and Mexico, in particular. He also had been involved in historical archaeology in Iowa and continued excavations at the Plum Grove Historic Site in Iowa City from 1974 until his death. He loved Lake Ontario, mountains, Mexico, books, stamps, and his Triumph sports cars and had a soft spot for small animals. Thomas is survived by his wife Cynthia Otis Charlton, whom he married icon in Iowa City in 1976. He is also survived by a son Thomas H. Charlton, IV, of Calgary, AB and his fiancée Karen Eldridge of Iowa City; two brothers: Eric C. Charlton and special friend Carol Burton of Calgary, AB and William J. (Carol) Charlton of Bracebridge, ON; mother-in-law Lucille Otis of Cedar Rapids, IA, brother- and sister-in-law Brian and Diane Otis of Fairfax, IA, and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. A private memorial will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Charlton Fund for Archaeological Research c/o USBank, Po Box 1880, 204 E Washington St., Iowa City, IA, 52240.

Phyllis Marie Gingerich was born icon December 28, 1929 in Wellman, Iowa, the daughter of Glen and Lavanda (Fisher) Eash. She graduated from Wellman High School in 1948. On August 12, 1952 she was united in marriage to Leo Glenn Gingerich at the Wellman Mennonite Church. They lived and farmed in rural Parnell. She was a member of the Wellman Mennonite Church. She enjoyed baking, quilting, sewing and spending time with her grandchildren. Phyllis died on Wednesday, June 9, 2010, at the Pleasantview Home in Kalona at the age of 80 years. Phyllis is survived by three children; Nancy Gingerich of Iowa City; Charles Gingerich and wife Sharon of Iowa City; Angela Eash and husband Mike of Kalona; eight grandchildren - Heather Parizek (Matt), Kendra and Brent Martin; Jesse Gingerich and Kyle Gingerich (Tasha), Samantha Leaton (Zeph); Zachary and Seth Eash; five great grandchildren - Skyler, Jade and Alexis Parizek, Naysa and Niah Leaton; a brother - Gene Eash (Ruth) of Wellman; and a sister Mary Kate Klopfenstein of Tucson, Arizona. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Leo; an infant brother, two infant sisters, and a brother-in-law Harry Klopfenstein. Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 12, 2010, at Wellman Mennonite Church. Pastor George O’Reilly will officiate. Burial will be in the Wellman Mennonite Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 2-8 p.m. on Friday at the Yoder-Powell Funeral Home in Kalona where the family will greet friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. A general memorial fund has been established.

Betty Fisher

Betty J. Fisher, PhD Betty J. Fisher, PhD, 48, passed away at St. Francis Hospital in Evanston, IL, on March 25, 2007, surrounded by family and friends. She had been diagnosed with breast cancer in March 2006; after completing nearly a year of treatment, she learned the cancer had metastasized to her lungs on January 30, 2007. Her exit was filled with the same spirit, strength, and grace as her life. “Dr. Betty” was an attending clinical psychologist and Coordinator of Behavioral Medicine Service at John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County, Department of Psychiatry, since November 1998. She was actively involved in the treatment of chronic-pain patients and patients with diabetes, participated in clinical research activities, and was Director of the Behavioral Health Psychology Practicum, a clinical training program for doctoral students. Betty graduated from Sigourney High School in 1976. She went on to earn a B.A. in Psychology from Goshen College in Goshen, IN (1982); Master’s degree in General and Experimental Psychology from Ball State University in Muncie, IN (1989); and her PhD in Clinical Psychology from Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, MI (1996). She completed a post-doctoral internship at Victoria Hospital, London, Ontario, and a post-doctoral fellowship in Behavioral Medicine at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, MD. Betty was born icon June 28, 1958, at the Keokuk County Hospital. She is the daughter of Cloyd Jr. and Mabel L. Fisher of rural Sigourney, IA. She is survived by her husband Stanley (Themba) Fakude of Chicago, IL. Betty and Themba were married icon March 25, 2006, at Coit Tower in San Francisco with her sister, Susan, officiating. Betty’s siblings are Susan (David) King of La Jolla, CA; Amy (Kevin) Molyneux of Rose Hill, IA; Randy (Coleen) Fisher of Keswick, IA; Steve (Sherry) Fisher of Sigourney, IA; Mary (Ed) Fowler of Rose Hill, IA; and Kathleen Fisher of Minneapolis, MN. Betty was aunt to Melissa (Molyneux) Van Donselaar, Aaron Molyneux, Joe and Josh Fowler, Amanda (Fisher) Berg, Brittany Pitzer, Skyler Fisher, Sara Fisher, Damien Grant, Danette Moore-Diamond, and Deric Bayzn. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to the Block Medical Center, which treated her cancer and provided options to pursue when no one else would. Those donations can be sent to the Institute for Integrative Cancer Research and Education [501(c)(3) Tax ID# 363252419], 1800 Sherman Ave., Suite 515, Evanston, IL 60201. In addition, Betty was an avid walker, having completed the Dublin Marathon, three Chicago Marathons, and the Hustle up the Hancock. Thus, she was also a huge supporter of the availability and accessibility of public restrooms, and a founding director of the American Restroom Association; donations can be made in her name at www.americanrestroom.org/admn/donate/index.htm. A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 7, 2007, at the Reynolds-Powell Funeral Chapel in Sigourney. A reception will follow the service at the Copper Lantern in Sigourney. Reynolds-Powell Funeral Chapel and Cremation Service in Sigourney is handling the local arrangements.
