Williamsburg - Reta Mary Fox, was born icon February 26, 1915 near North English on the farm, the daughter of Otto Lamont and Hazel Ruth (Kelley) Kutchera. She attended Gritter Creek School, North English High School and Cedar Rapids Business College. She was briefly married icon to Walter Grimm. She later married icon William Fox on August 31, 1939 at the Little Brown Church, Nashua. Reta resided in Cedar Rapids, Deep River and in 1977 moved to North English. In 2005 she moved to Highland Ridge Presbyterian Home in Williamsburg. Reta helped organize and start the Iowa County Historical Society. She was the last remaining charter member of the Iowa Historical Society. She spent numerous hours volunteering and preserving Gritter Creek School. She was a member of the Iowa County Extension, the Millersburg Garden Club and the North English Christian Church. She enjoyed going to elder hostels, sewing, painting, quilting, playing cards, gardening, and teaching her grandchildren about gardening and flowers. Reta died on Tuesday, June 14, 2011, at the English Valley Care Center, North English at the age of 96 years. She is survived by a son: Richard (Hilda) Grimm of North English; 8 grandchildren: Thomas (Cheryl) Grimm of Swanton, Vermont, Gloria (Tim) Mesick of Bettendorf, Karla (Barry) Lee of Sigourney, John (Dawn) Grimm of Cedar Rapids, Michael (Pam) Grimm of North English, Brenda (Chris) Tompkins of Montezuma, Kurtis Grimm and Kelly Grimm both of Iowa City; 9 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren. She was preceded by her parents, her husband William Fox in 1981, a sister: Billie Brower and a brother: John Kutchera. Visitation will be held 4-7 PM on Thursday, June 16, 2011 at Powell Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Williamsburg. Private family services and burial will be held at a later date. Pastor Kirk Statler will officiate. A general memorial fund has been established.

KALONA - Arlis Stumpf was born icon January 5, 1927 near Kalona, Iowa the son of Harold and Sarah (Dawson) Stumpf. He attended school at Holy Trinity in Richmond. He served in the United States Army during WWII. On April 11, 1964 he was united in marriage to Sharon Malichky at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Richmond. They have lived in the Kalona community since their marriage. Arlis was a lifelong expert semi driver earning many safety awards. He drove for Western Transportation, Acme Transport, and later for Haines Transport until hi retirement. He enjoyed traveling, listening to music, watching television and visiting with his friends. Arlis died Wednesday, June 15, 2011 at Parkview Manor in Wellman following a courageous battle with a long term illness. He was 84 years old. Arlis is survived by his wife Sharon of Kalona; a brother James Stumpf of Tacoma, WA; four sisters - Marge Snyder of Kalona; Marilyn Charbonneaux of Napa, CA; Jane Cannon of Oregon; Mrs Dayle (Joanne) Chalupa of Kalona; a two sisters-in-law Joan Kleopfer of Kalona; Jeanne Malichky of Riverside and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved daughter Alicia on August 29, 2009, and a brother Thomas. A Prayer Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, June 20, 2011 at the Yoder-Powell Funeral Home in Kalona. Rev. Rich Adam will officiate. Burial will be in the Sharon Hill Cemetery in Kalona. Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. until service time on Monday at the Funeral Home. A general memorial fund has been established.

Patricia Anne Evans, was born icon July 6, 1931, in Nashua, Iowa the daughter of Gurdon Curry and Margaret Alice (Troutner) Chandler. They lived in Nashua when she was little then to Williamsburg. She graduated from Williamsburg High School and went on to receive her teaching certificate. She taught country school for 1 year, and was the bookkeeper for Evans Sales, Co. She married icon Carl D. Evans on April 22, 1950 at the Little Brown Church, Nashua, Iowa. She was a former member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, Williamsburg. She enjoyed playing duplicate bridge and going to tournaments, bowling and golfing. Patricia died on Friday, June 17, 2011, at Mercy Hospital, Iowa City at the age of 79 years. She is survived by her husband Carl of Williamsburg; a daughter Nancy (Richard) Bohrn of Iowa City; 3 sons: Richard (Julie) Evans, Robert Evans all of Williamsburg, and Paul (Amy) Evans of Austin, Texas; 7 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; a sister Lorelee Brown of Fairfield, Iowa and a brother Robert Chandler of Marshalltown, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister Peggy Griffis, a son Steve Evans and a grandson Calvin Evans. Family services will be held 11:00 AM on Tuesday, June 21, 2011, at Powell Funeral Home, Williamsburg. Rev. Craig Brown will officiate. Visitation will be held on Monday, from 6-8 PM at the Powell Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Williamsburg. A memorial fund has been established for the Mercy Hospice Care Unit or Iowa City Hospice.

Katie Ann (Schrock) Yoder Swartzentruber was born icon June 2, 1924 in Hartville, Ohio the daughter of Peter and Katie (Miller) Schrock. She has lived in the Kalona community since 1944. On January 1, 1945 she married icon Ray Yoder in Kalona, he died in July of 1948. On July 3, 1949 she married icon Eli Swartzentruber in Kalona. She was a rug weaver, and owned and operated Katie’s Flowers in Kalona for ten years. She was a member of the Sunnyside Mennonite Church, where she enjoyed being with her church family and attending sewing circle. She was a lifetime member of the Kalona Area Chamber of Commerce, and she managed the Kalona state fair booth for many years. She hosted Kalona tours demonstrating her rug weaving. She volunteered at the Crowded Closet for many years. Katie enjoyed crocheting, jigsaw puzzles, playing games, plants, and she loved spending time with her family. Katie died on Saturday, June 18, 2011 at the Pleasantview Home in Kalona at the age of 87 years. Katie is survived by five children Verton Yoder (Pat) of Mishawaka, IN; Barb Miller (John) of Kalona; Laban Swartzentruber (Kathy) of Junction City, KS; Joe Swartzentruber (Deb) of Kalona; Jim Swartzentruber (Sherry) of Kalona; 14 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; two brothers - Mose Schrock of Hartville, OH; Sam Schrock of Townville, PA; and two sisters - Lydiann Weaver of Elroy, IN; and Barbara Coblentz of Belle Center, OH. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband’s Ray and Eli; a grandchild; and six brothers and sisters. Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 21, 2011 at the Sunnyside Mennonite Church in Kalona. Pastor’s John King, Floyd Helmuth and Floyd Yutzy will officiate. Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 2-8 p.m. Monday at the Sunnyside Mennonite Church where the family will greet friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. A Memorial fund has been established for the Sunnyside Mennonite Church. The Yoder-Powell Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Winifred “Winnie: Wright, 97 of Venice, Florida, formerly of Keswick & Sigourney, Iowa, died June 16, 2011 in Venice. Winnie, was born icon November 21, 1913, in Keswick, Iowa. She was a member of the National Society of the daughters of the American Revolution, Myakka chapter, the chicago Area John Kinzie chapter of the United States Daughters of the war of 1812, and a life member of the society of Indiana Pioneers. She was a Roman Catholic, attending Epiphany Cathedral. Winnie retired from the Crime Division of the FBI in Washington, D.C. She is survived by many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sisters Ethel, Helen, Mary and Geraldine, and a brother Harold. Celebration of Life Service will held 2:00 PM on Wednesday, June 22, 2011, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Sigourney. Visitation will be from 1-2 PM on Wednesday at the church. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Sigourney.

North English Betty May Denison was born icon on December 18, 1924, in Des Moines, IA, a daughter of Kenneth Dale and May Brubaker Lane. Betty lived in the Des Moines area before moving to Mason City, North Dakota, Bussey, and What Cheer. She graduated from Barnes City High School. On February 27, 1951, she married icon Wilford Eugene Denison in What Cheer, They moved to North English in 1955. Betty was a member of the North English Christian Church, where she was a deacon, taught Sunday School for many years and was a member of the CWF. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the Red Hat Club. Betty worked 20 years as a postal clerk in North English for the United States Postal Service. Betty died on Thursday, June 23, 2011, at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids, at the age of 86 years. Betty is survived by daughters Ruth Ann (Jerry) Dill of Cedar Rapids; Pamela Denison of Cedar Rapids; Crystal (Stan) Wiess of Ladora; and son Gary Denison of Cedar Rapids; 5 grandchildren: David & Darren Dill; Austin, Travis & Ashley Clubb; 6 great grandchildren: Cody, Alecia & Riley Dill, and Isaac, Celie & Brooklyn Clubb. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband in January 2002 and a brother Kenneth Lane. A Celebration of Life Service will be held 1:00 PM at the North English Christian Church with Pastor Kirk Statler officiating. Visitation will be held on Saturday from 11:00 am to 1:00 PM at the church. Burial will be in the North English Cemetery. A memorial fund has been established for the North English Christian Church or Mercy Hospice, Hiawatha.

HEDRICK-LeRoy F. “Bill” Sieren, age 85, of Hedrick, died Monday, September 6, 2010, at the Manor House Care Center in Sigourney. Bill was born icon April 20, 1925, in Clear Creek Township, Keokuk County, Iowa, to Nicholas and Clara (Marsh) Sieren and attended country school. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and on August 12, 1946, he married icon Zelma Nicholson at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Clear Creek Township. The couple lived and farmed near Hedrick until moving into Hedrick. Bill moved to Manor House Care Center in Sigourney in August of 2006. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Sigourney and a 60-year member of American Legion Post #83 in Hedrick. Bill enjoyed square dancing, family gatherings and being with his family. Survivors include his wife: Zelma of Hedrick; two daughters: Diane Black of Ottumwa and Debra (Wendell) Essex of Wilton; two sons: Martin (Cindy) Sieren and Lynn (Lea) Sieren, all of Hedrick; four grandsons; two granddaughters; 12 great grandchildren; three brothers: Harvey (Marilyn) Sieren of Hedrick, Howard (Bernetta) Sieren of Ottumwa and Fremont (Marilyn) Sieren of Keota and two sisters: Rosella Bayliss of Keota and Isabelle (Keith) Beinhart of Sigourney. He was preceded in death by his parents; son: Steven Sieren; two granddaughters: Kimberly and Shelby Nelson; two brothers: Forrest and Clarence; three sisters: Evelyn Weber, LuAnna Weber and LaVinnia Bayliss and son-in-law: Donald Black. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 10, 2010, at Powell Funeral Home in Sigourney, with Rev. Charles Fladung officiating. Burial will be at St. Mary Cemetery in Sigourney. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.on Thursday, September 9, 2010, and from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m.on Friday, September 10, 2010, at the funeral home. A memorial fund has been established for Manor House Care Center, Lou Gehrig Foundation, Parkinson’s Disease Foundation, or St. Mary Catholic Church. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Sigourney is caring for Bill and his family.

She married icon Dr. Keith Dougherty and of that union they had 3 children: Linda, Mike and Van, they were later divorced. On April 13, 1974, she married icon Joseph E. Franey Jr. in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She was a sales associate at Armstrong’s Department Store for 17 years, retiring in 1987. They lived in Cedar Rapids until moving to Highland Ridge Retirement Community in August of 2008. Naomi was a former member of the Eastern Star and the Elk Auxiliary. She enjoyed spending time with her family, cooking, golfing, playing bridge, bowling and attending Hawkeye Football games. Naomi died on Tuesday, June 28, 2011, at the Highland Ridge Care Center, Williamsburg at the age of 89 years. She is survived by her husband Joe of Williamsburg; 2 daughters Linda (Bob) Driscoll of Williamsburg and Patti (Steve) Smith of Johnston, Iowa; 2 sons: Mike (Gaye) Dougherty of Okoboji, Iowa and Van Dougherty of Iowa City, Iowa; 10 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; a sister Margaret Register; and 2 brothers: Richard Hatchell and Tom Hatchell. She was preceded in death by her parents; 3 sisters Lannie, Alma and Dina; and 3 brothers: Bill, Jimmy and Herb. Celebration of Life Service will be held 10:30 AM on Thursday, June 30, 2011, at the Powell Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Williamsburg. Pastor Kirk Statler will officiate. Burial will be at a later date. Visitation will be Wednesday from 4-7 PM at Powell Funeral Home. Memorials are for Camp Courageous.

She graduated from Wapello High School and received nurses training in Burlington. On December 13, 1972 she was united in marriage to Richard Soukup at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They lived in rural Ainsworth before moving to Kalona in 1993. She worked at the Wapello Sale Barn, Wapello Grocery Store, Kalonial Townhouse, Yotty’s Ice Cream and JW’s Deli. She was a member of the Salem Church of God. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. Iris died on Friday, July 1, 2011 at the Simpson Memorial Home in West Liberty at the age of 71 years. Iris is survived by her husband Richard of Kalona; three sons Kirk Soukup and wife Karen and their children Steven and Michael of Middletown; Brad Soukup and fiancé Tina and their children Dakota, Austin and Katerina of Muscatine; Kyle Soukup and wife Laura and their children Sarah and Emma of West Branch; three sisters Shirley Samuels and husband Jack of Wapello; Karolyn Sanders and husband Art of Hartford, WI; Llewann Bryant and husband Rich of Wapello; and a brother Perry Fletcher of Wapello. She was preceded in death by her parents. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 6, 2011 at the Yoder-Powell Funeral Home in Kalona. Rev Lynn Patrick will officiate. Burial will be in the Salem Cemetery in rural Ainsworth. Visiation will be held from 4-7 p.m. on Tuesday at the Yoder-Powell Funeral Home. A memorial fund has been established for Iowa City Hospice.
