H. Wayne Kurtz of Highland Ridge in Williamsburg, Iowa, passed into a new life on Monday, July 4, 2011. Wayne was born
on September 1, 1917, to Homer and Beulah (Korf) Kurtz, near Keota, Iowa where he later farmed. On January 30, 1940, he was united in marriage to Evelyn Wade at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They had recently celebrated their 71st anniversary. He was a former member of the Scotland Presbyterian Church, South English. He enjoyed visiting with family and friends and farming. He is survived by his wife Evelyn of Williamsburg; 2 daughters Susanne (Doug) Wolrab of Cedar Rapids and Katherine (Ted) Rogers of Center Point; 2 grandsons Kelly & Joel Rogers and 2 great granddaughters Brexlyn & Joah Rogers. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, John Robert Kurtz. There will be no services at this time. Private inurnment will be at a later date. KALONA - Chriss E. Miller, 89, of Goshen, Indiana formerly of Kalona, died Tuesday, July 5, at The Maples at Waterford Crossing, Goshen, Indiana. He was born
on February 10, 1922, in Shipshewana, to David and Mollie (Miller) Miller. He married
Lizzie Ann Miller who died in 1996. On August 13, 2000 in Middlebury, Indiana he married
Lovina Schwietert, she survives. Survivors in addition to his wife are two daughters, LaVina (Vernon) Christner of Goshen, Leora (Laverne) Miller of Kalona, IA; a son, Lester (Marilyn) Miller of Goshen; 11 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren, one great great grandchild; three step daughters, Lucille Hodge of Sun City, AZ, JoAnn (Neal) Beachy of Etna Green, Indiana, Rosetta (Ray) Miller of Bristol, Indiana; two step sons, Eugene (Martha) Schwietert of Goshen, Indiana, Randy (Robin) Schwietert of Edwardsburg, Michigan; 11 step grandchildren, 22 step great grandchildren; three brothers, Elmer (Mary) Miller of Goshen, Indiana, Dennis (Barbara) Miller of Topeka, Indiana, Levi "Lee" (Ida) Miller of Shipshewana, Indiana; Sister-in-law - Ida Miller of Shipshewana, Indiana. He was preceded in death by his first wife, both parents, daughter, Laura Miller, brother, Lester Miller. He was a member of Roselawn Mennonite Church in Middlebury. He was a farmer, grounds keeper, had a bakery route, and worked at Goshen Stamping & Tool. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 9, 2011 at the Sunnyside Mennonite Church in Kalona. Pastors John King and Floyd Helmuth will officiate. Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 9:30 until service time on Saturday at the Church. The Yoder-Powell Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. KEOTA - Verda T. Sieren, age 92, of Keota, died Monday, July 11, 2011, at the Washington County Hospital in Washington, Iowa. Verda was born
October 2, 1918, in Harper, Iowa, to Peter and Pearl (Sondag) Adam. On May 3, 1939 she married
John W. Sieren at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Harper. She grew up, lived and farmed in the Harper community until moving to Keota in 1970. Verda was a cook at Keota Schools for 17 years, retiring in 1989. She was a member of Holy Trinity Parish - St. Mary Catholic Church and the Altar and Rosary Society. Verda especially enjoyed playing cards, baking cinnamon rolls for her family and leading the rosary before mass. Survivors include four sons: LaVerne Sieren and wife Mildred of Keota, Gary Sieren and wife Judy of Washington, Leland Sieren and wife Shirley of Sigourney and John R. Sieren of Mesa, Arizona; one daughter: Mary Beth Cave and husband Mike of Harper; 12 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; two sisters: Verena Snakenberg of Sigourney and Edith Hammes Warnick of Delta and one brother: Harry Jo Adam of Columbus Junction. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband: John in 2009; five sisters: Adella Greiner, Ruth Ann Adam, Oda Reed, Theophala in infancy and Ruth Ann in infancy and three brothers: Juan Richard Adam, Elmer Adam and Theodore in infancy. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 14, 2011, at Holy Trinity Parish - St. Mary Catholic Church in Keota, with Rev. Troy Richmond officiating. Burial will be at Holy Trinity Cemeteries - St. Mary Cemetery in Keota. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 13, 2011, at Powell Funeral Home in Keota, where there will be a rosary at 7:00 p.m. A general memorial fund has been established. October 27, 1931, in rural Sigourney, to Nick R. and Clara (Mersch) Sieren. She lived in the Clear Creek, Harper and Sigourney communities her entire lifetime. On September 28, 1950, Isabelle married
Charles Keith Beinhart at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Clear Creek Township. Isabelle worked as a Certified Nurses Aide at Manor House Care Center in Sigourney from 1984 until 2008. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Sigourney. Survivors include her husband: Keith; five children: Roger (Molly) Beinhart of Keota, Rhonda Beinhart of Sigourney, Murray (Connie) Beinhart of Bloomfield, Brenda (Chris) Frazier of DeWitt and Marcia Beinhart of Sigourney; 16 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; one sister: Rosella Bayliss of Keota and three brothers: Harvey Sieren of Hedrick, Howard Sieren of Ottumwa and Fremont Sieren of Sigourney. She was preceded in death by her parents; son: Bruce Beinhart; three sisters: Evelyn Weber, Luanna Weber and Luvina Bayliss and three brothers: Forrest Sieren, Clarence Sieren and LeRoy Sieren. Memorial mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 21, 2011, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Sigourney with Rev. Robert Harness officiating. South English- Steven Lloyd Frederick, was born
September 2 1953, in Sigourney, Iowa, the son of Edwin Earl and Betty Louise Hearn Frederick. He graduated from English Valley High School in 1971. He worked for Multi-County Oil in North English for many years. He enjoyed fishing and Nascar. Steve died on Monday, July 18, 2011, at University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City at the age of 57 years. He is survived by a daughter Brittany (Jereme Goltz) Van Zante of West Amana; a sister Brenda (Johnny) Peppers of Blue Springs, MO; 5 brothers: Fritz (Del) of North English, Craig (Becky) of Keota, Marlin (Jan) of Webster, Raymond of South English and Brent (LeAnn) of Williamsburg. He was preceded in death by his parents. Celebration of Life Service will be held 10:00 AM on Friday, July 22, 2011, at Powell Funeral Home, North English. Williamsburg - Carroll Rowe, was born
July 29, 1936, in rural Iowa County, Iowa, the son of Edward James and Velma Gladys Maplethorpe Rowe. He graduated from North English High School in 1954. On February 14, 1965, he married
Joyce Ann Smith in Millersburg, Iowa. As a child he attended Champion Hill Methodist Church, rural North English.. He enjoyed NASCAR, country music, watching TV, having cocktails with friends and neighbors. Carroll had an amazing sense of humor and quick wit. No one was immune to his teasing. If he picked on you it meant he loved you. He kept everyone entertained with his jokes until the very end, enabling his family to smile through their tears! Family was the most important thing to Carroll. He also enjoyed researching a variety of subjects including history, genealogy and geography on the internet and had an insatiable thirst for knowledge. He loved attending and participating in classic car shows with his prized 1965 Chevy Impala SS Convertible, woodworking and tinkering in his garage. Carroll died after a courageous battle with Pulmonary Fibrosis, on Thursday, July 21, 2011, at University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City at the age of 74 years. He is survived by his wife Joyce of Williamsburg; a son Bruce and wife Sharon of Williamsburg; a daughter Lisa and fiancé Joe Pretti of Marion; 5 grandchildren Shannon (Steven) Rathjen of Savannah Georgia, Amy (Jeremy) Kaiser of Peosta, Kimberly (JJ) Frahm of Williamsburg, Kristen (Bill) Bamford and Nick (Stephanie) Pretti all of St. Louis, Missouri; 5 great grandchildren: Morgan & Logan Kaiser, Nyla Frahm and Bill & Finnegan Bamford; very special nieces and nephews including: Gary (Donna) Rowe of Cedar Rapids and Glenn (Sandy) Rowe of Wellman, Kimberly Rowe of Dallas, Texas and Kathy (Ian) Bradbury of Brighton, Michigan. Sonya Ilene Slabach was born
November 15, 1939 in Jasper County, near Alba, Missouri, the daughter of Marvin and Goldie (Jantz) Buerge. She graduated from Garden City High School and Hesston College. On May 14, 1963 she was united in marriage to Herman Slabach in Garden City, Missouri. They moved to Kalona in the fall of 1963. Sonya worked as a Registered Nurse at the V.A. Medical Center, Mercy Hospital and the Pleasantview Home. She was a member of the Lower Deer Creek Mennonite Church where she taught Sunday School of all ages, and was involved with prison ministries. She enjoyed reading, helping people and she loved her family. Sonya passed away on Friday, July 22, 2011 at her home in Kalona with her family by her side. She was 71 years old. Sonya is survived by her husband Herman of Kalona; a son Lance Slabach and wife Nichole of Iowa City; a daughter Leslie Weber and husband Conrad of Atmore, Alabama; six grandchildren - Roman, Monet, and Bronze Slabach; David, Jace and Abby Weber; her father Marvin “Eugene” Buerge and wife Beulah of Garden City, Missouri; and a brother Scott Buerge and wife Charlotte of Nevada, Missouri. She was preceded in death by her mother. Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 26, 2011 at the Kalona Mennonite Church in Kalona. Rev. Don Patterson will officiate. Burial will be in the Sharon Hill Cemetery in Kalona. Visitation will be held from 2-8 p.m. on Monday at the Yoder-Powell Funeral Home in Kalona. A memorial fund has been established for Atmore Christian School and Hillside Christian School.

Williamsburg - James Vincent Welsh, 84, of Williamsburg, passed away Sunday, July 24, 2011, surrounded by his children, from kidney failure at Marengo Memorial Hospital. He had been ill for several months. Funeral mass will be held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Williamsburg on Thursday, July 28, 2011 at 10:00 AM, with burial following at St. Michael’s Cemetery in Holbrook. on August 25, 1926 at the family farm East of Williamsburg, son of Thomas J. And Florence A. (Welsh) Welsh. He attended country school York #6 (rural Williamsburg) through 8th grade and graduated from Cosgrove High School in 1944. At age 17, he entered the Army 9th Air Corps, serving from 1944 to 1946, earning the rank of Corporal. He attended airplane and engine mechanics school at Keesler Field, Mississippi and was stationed in Germany near the end of World War II. Upon his return to Iowa, Jim farmed proudly in Iowa County, east of Williamsburg. He married
Kathleen Ann Kessler of Cosgrove on August 4, 1948 and they had nine children. In addition to farming, he held various positions with the Agricultural Stabilization Conservation Service as well as being a York Township Trustee. Jim retired from farming in 1988 when he and Kathleen (Kay) moved into Williamsburg. He obtained his real estate license and worked for Crane & Associates. He also worked part-time for Kirkwood Community College in Williamsburg. Kathleen passed away in 2000. Jim led an active, diverse life. In addition to work and family, he enjoyed golfing, hunting and fishing as well as being a dedicated fan of the St. Louis Cardinals, Iowa Hawkeyes, and a spectator of most sports. He was a lifelong Democrat. Jim was active with St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Holbrook and later a member of St. Mary’s in Williamsburg. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus for many years, including a term as Grand Knight. During retirement, he was an active member of the VFW, Iburg Polson Post 8797. He was an avid reader and made friends at the library. He enjoyed spending time with his children and especially grandchildren. Jim had a quick Irish wit, a sharp memory for details, and a quip for most any conversation. Jim is survived by 8 of his 9 children: Laura Engler (Mitchellville), Jan Welsh (Bruce Fairbanks, Cincinnati, OH), Marita Welch (West Des Moines), Joan Welsh-Grabin (Joel Grabin, Oxford), Bob Welsh (Nancy, Williamsburg), Diane Lotz (Bob Lotz, North Liberty), Tom Welsh (Holli, Williamsburg), and Kathy Welsh (Bart Brown, Iowa City)and a daughter-in-law Jeanne Welsh (Williamsburg). He also had 13 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother John J. and sister Mary R. Welsh, wife Kathleen A., son William J., and granddaughter Bond M. Grabin. Memorials may be directed to the Williamsburg Public Library, and Friends of Old St. Michael’s.

Linda lived in Omaha, Glenwood and the past nine years in Cedar Rapids. She worked at various occupations during her life but always enjoyed arranging flowers and her arts and crafts. Her greatest joy was being with her family.
