Oxford Clark Burns, age 84, who died Sunday, July 24, 2011 at Colonial Manor in Amana. Celebration of Life Services will be held at 10:30 AM Wednesday, July 27, 2011, at the Powell Funeral Home in Williamsburg. Visitation will be from 4 PM to 7 PM on Tuesday, July 26th at the funeral home with a VFW service at 7 PM. Burial will be in Memory Gardens in Iowa City at 2:00 PM on Wednesday. A general memorial fund has been established. Crawford Clark Burns was born icon on September 30, 1926 in Downing MO, a son of Roy and Osa (Black) Burns. He graduated from Maquoketa High School and enlisted in the US Army at age 17. He was in both active and reserve duty and retired as a Command Sergeant Major. He was united in marriage to Phyllis Becker on October 22, 1949 to this union they had two children Sue & Robert. The couple later divorced. Clark later was united in marriage Shirley Schumacher on May 26, 1973 in Cedar Rapids. Clark managed the Amana Feed Mill then worked for Chipman Feed in Williamsburg until retiring in 1988. Clark and Shirley enjoyed wintering in Texas for 24 years. Their summers they enjoyed mowing and working at Sleepy Hollow near Oxford, were they also lived. Clark’s greatest joy was watching his grandchildren in their activities and spending time with family and friends. Clark is survived by his wife Shirley of Oxford, IA; six children: Sue (Dale) Gosnell of Conroy, IA; Robert (Sue) Burns of Jacksonville, FL; Connie (John) Pegump of Walford, IA; Kevin (Teresa) Schumacher of Jefferson City, MO; Jeff Schumacher of High Amana, IA; Mark (Shelly) Schumacher of Amana, IA; 12 grandchildren: Ann (Blake) Kleinmeyer of Williamsburg, Greg ( Keri) Gosnell of Mason City, Catherine, Elizabeth & David Burns all of Jacksonville, FL, Justin (Julie) Pegump, Teran Pegump, Jesse (Kate) Schumacher, Nikki Schumacher and Tyler Schumacher all of Cedar Rapids, Sheena (Josh) Hogue and Kyle Schumacher all of Amana and 4 great grandchildren: Ella Kleinmeyer, Aria Pegump, Zach and Joseph Schumacher; two brothers: David (Shirley) Burns and Kenneth Burns all of Maquoketa, IA; and a sister: Beverly (Milan) Ashbrenner of Monet, VA. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers: Howard and Clarence and a sister: LaVonne Hope.

WELLMAN - Helen Elizabeth Yoder was born icon February 5, 1930 in Johnson County near Kalona, Iowa the daughter of Christian and Mary (Gingerich) Marner. She was in the first graduating class from Iowa Mennonite High School. On August 9, 1949 she was united in marriage to Clarence Yoder at the Lower Deer Creek Mennonite Church. They lived and farmed in rural Wellman. She was a member of the Lower Deer Creek Mennonite Church, Mennonite Historical Society where she served on the board for 25 years, and she was an active participant in the Kalona Fall Festival with the apple butter sales. She enjoyed spending time with her family. Helen died on Tuesday, July 26, 2011 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City at the age of 81 years. Helen is survived by a brother Ray Marner and wife Ruth of Kalona; a sister-in-law Verl Marner of Kalona; three nieces - Karen Gugel (Duane) of Kalona; Cindy Marner of Kalona; Joyce Billups (Randy) of Kalona; three nephews - Dale Marner (Linda) of Kalona; Jeff Marner (Cheryl) of Kalona; Jon Marner (Beryl) of Kalona; and forteen great nieces and nephews; and 10 great great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in September of 1991; and a brother Wallace. Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, July 30, 2011 at the Lower Deer Creek Mennonite Church in rural Kalona. Pastor Don Patterson and Pastor Dick Swartzendruber will officiate. Burial will be in the Lower Deer Creek Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 2-8 p.m. on Friday at the Yoder-Powell Funeral Home in Kalona where the family will greet friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. A memorial fund has been established for Clarence and Helen Yoder Memorial Scholarship at Iowa Mennonite High School.

Williamsburg - -Norma Larene Webert was born icon May 6, 1920, in Williamsburg, Iowa, the daughter of Henry C. and Caroline (Sandersfeld) Schmidt. She attended rural school. Norma was united in marriage to Arnold E. Webert on January 16, 1941 at Immanuel Lutheran Church near Williamsburg. Norma and Arnold farmed and lived west of Williamsburg until moving to town in 1976. Norma enjoyed gardening, sewing, camping, playing cards and Dominos. She especially enjoyed spending time with the grandchildren and family. Norma was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church. She volunteered at L.I.S and participated in church activities, including the Fellowship Club. Norma, died on Tuesday, July 26, 2011, at Mercy Hospital, in Iowa City, at the age of 91 years. She is survived by a daughter: Luanne and husband Eliseo Alcaraz of Cedar Hill, Texas; a son: Wayne and wife Linda Webert of Williamsburg; a daughter-in-law: Carol and husband Jon Eggert of Oxford; 12 grandchildren; and 22 great grandchildren and a sister: Wanda Huedepohl. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Arnold in 2008; a son Leland in 1991; a daughter Carolyn Middleton in 1984; a great grandson Adam Fitzsimmons in 2008; five brothers: Arnold, Ervin, Milton, Mellen and Orville Schmidt and a sister: Alma Stohlmann. Celebration of Life service will be held 10:30 AM on Friday, July 29, 2011, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Williamsburg. Pastor Carl Cloeter will officiate. Burial will be in the St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery, Williamsburg. Visitation will be Thursday from 4-7 PM at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Williamsburg. A memorial fund has been established for St. Paul Lutheran Church.

Lynette Ellen Glandorf was born icon May 1, 1962 in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of Derald and June (Woodrum) Glandorf. She graduated from Williamsburg High School in 1980 and attended Kirkwood Community College, receiving an associate of arts degree. She was employed as an administrative assistant for various offices which led to her career at Seabury and Smith for nearly ten years before becoming self-employed. On August 17, 1991, she married icon Patrick J. Donohoe at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Holbrook. They established their home in the rural Parnell area and began their family. Together they owned and operated Donohoe Drywall, Inc. Lynette participated in basketball and softball in high school and also enjoyed scrapbooking and family vacations. What she loved most was being a loving wife and mother, as well as creating a beautiful home for her family. She was actively involved in all of her kids’ activities from teaching religion, coaching little league and attending her sons’ athletic competitions and 4-H events. Being a well-respected member of the community, Lynette was known to be a kind, humble and giving person. Over the past years she has been an avid participant and leader in bringing a team to the annual “Especially for You” Breast Cancer Walk in Cedar Rapids. Lynette is survived by her husband, Patrick; three sons, Jarett, Jacob, and Justin, all at home; her parents: Gerald & June Glandorf of Williamsburg; two brothers, Steve (Liisa) Glandorf, Georgetown, TX and Todd (Teresa) Glandorf, Round Rock, TX; one sister, Kimberly (Mike) Jackson, Grandview, TX; one brother-in-law, Bill Donohoe, Holbrook; and five sisters-in-law, Peg (Dwight) Gildemeister, Williamsburg, Jerlynn (Pat) O’Brien, Parnell, Mary Donohoe, Holbrook, Deb Donohoe Thompson (Paul), Conrad and Carolyn Donohoe-Martens (Dale), Conroy; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Mary Woodrum Rowcliffe, Earl Woodrum and Arthur and Meta Glandorf; parents-in-law, Jerry and Kathleen Donohoe; and brother-in-law, Tom Donohoe. Funeral Mass will be held Wednesday, August 3rd at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Williamsburg. With Fr. Joseph Roost and Fr. Andrew Kelly concelebrating. Burial will be at St. Michael’s Cemetery in Holbrook. Visitation will be Tuesday from 2:00 to 8:00 pm at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Williamsburg. A prayer service will be at 2:00pm Tuesday. She passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 30, 2011, in her home surrounded by her loving family. A general memorial has been established.

Wellman Dateline Allan “Butch” Monroe Boone, was born icon September 1, 1944, in Wellman, Iowa the son of Marvin and Adella M. “Peg” (Evans) Boone. He attended Mid Prairie Schools. On December 26, 1964, he married icon Mary Jo Neal, in Iowa City. Butch was a member of the First Baptist Church, Wellman. He enjoyed spending time with his family. Butch, died on Tuesday, August 2, 2011, at his home in Wellman at the age of 66 years. He is survived by his wife Mary of Wellman; 3 children: Karen (Jeff) Fair, Corey (Valerie) Boone and Steve (Maria) Boone all of Wellman; 13 grandchildren: Kendall Hammes, Taylor Fair, Kelsi Fair, Joe, Josh, & Jesse Boone, Zach, Derek and Kyna Oxley, Joe, Ashley, Arial and Ayla Tripses; 3 great grandchildren Matthew Troyer, Noah and Rowan Lamb and 2 sisters: Connie (Jim) McKray of Riverside and Paula (Dale) Lampe of Keota. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister Jackie Johnston and a brother Alfred “Ole” Boone. Celebration of Life Service will be held 10:00 AM Friday, August 5, 2011 at the First Baptist Church, Wellman. Pastor Mark Larson will officiate. Burial will be in the Wellman Cemetery. Visitation will be on Thursday, from 4-7 PM at the Powell Funeral Home, Wellman. A general memorial fund has been established.

Williamsburg – Justin Lee Rowe was born icon June 1, 1977 in Iowa City, Iowa, the son of Douglas L. and Diane M. (Dermody) Rowe. He attended Lutheran Interparish School and graduated from Williamsburg High School in 1995. Justin was united in marriage to Sarah Melissa Sandhagen on August 15, 2009 at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Williamsburg. The couple made their home in Williamsburg. Justin enjoyed working for 20 years as a seed technician for Monsanto Seed in Williamsburg. He enjoyed being outside, fishing, riding his motorcycle, mushroom hunting, spending time with family, friends and his English Bulldog Brock. Justin died Saturday, August 6, 2011 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics at the age of 34 years. He is survived by his wife: Sarah of Williamsburg; his parents: Douglas & Diane Rowe of Conroy; four brothers: his twin, Aaron Rowe of Ames, Azariah Rowe of Conroy, Jacob Rowe of Eldridge and Jared Rowe (Amanda Finnegan) of Amana; a sister; Alisha Rowe of Cedar Rapids; a nephew: Connor Finnegan; a grandfather: Clement Dermody of North English; a grandmother: Florine Rowe of Williamsburg; father & mother in-law: Bruce & Wanda Sandhagen of Atkins; two sister-in-laws: Monica (Gary) Buser of Palestine, IL and Amy (Mike) Kubas of Williamsburg; a brother-in-law: Matt (Trina) Sandhagen of Keystone; nephews and nieces: Lance Sandhagen, Caleb & Logan Kubas and Bradley & Erin Buser. Justin was preceded in death by his grandmother: Blanche Dermody and grandfather: Ernest “Gene” Rowe. Celebration of Life Service will be 10:30 am Thursday, August 11, 2011 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Williamsburg. Pastor Carl Cloeter will officiate. Burial will be St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery. Margaret Lee Squiers, age 76, of Dallas, TX and formerly of North English, IA, died on Saturday, August 20, 2011, at the Medallion Senior Living Community in Dallas after a year-long battle with cancer. Margaret was born icon on June 28, 1935 in North English, Iowa, the daughter of Dean (Barney) and Elizabeth (Betty) Yates Thomas. She graduated from North English High School in 1953 and American Institute of Business in Des Moines. She was married icon to Dale Squiers on December 26, 1959 in North English. They later divorced. Margaret worked for Ford Motor Company in Omaha, and Jefferson Elementary School and Express Print in Des Moines. Margaret is survived by her sons, Jay Squiers of Dallas, TX and his wife, Meg, and Gil Squiers of Collierville, TN, and also by 4 grandchildren: Jack (a senior at Princeton University), Kate (a sophomore at the University of Notre Dame), Will (a senior at Cistercian Preparatory School) and Hall (a 6th grader at Collierville Middle School). She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Bruce Thomas. Graveside services will be held at the North English Cemetery on August 28, 2011, at 10 am. There will be no visitation. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society. Powell Funeral Home in North English is in charge of arrangements.

Dean Swartzendruber, 84, passed away on Monday, August 22, 2011, at Mercy Hospital, Iowa City, Iowa. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, August 26, 2011, at Lower Deer Creek Mennonite Church in rural Kalona. Burial will be in the West Union Mennonite Cemetery. Visitation will be on Thursday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Yoder-Powell Funeral Home in Kalona, where the family will greet friends from 2-5 and 6-8 p.m. Dean was born icon on August 14, 1927, near Wellman, Iowa, to Edward L. and Katherine (Erb) Swartzendruber. He grew up on a farm seven miles north of Wellman and attended White Hall School and Wellman and Parnell High Schools before graduating from Hesston (Kansas) High School. He married icon Lois Bergey on September 3, 1949, at Doylestown, Pennsylvania. Dean operated the family farm on which he was raised. He was ordained as minister of Lower Deer Creek Mennonite Church on October 2, 1960. He received further training and took Bible correspondence courses at Goshen College and completed a unit of Clinical Pastoral Care at the University of Iowa. Dean took part in two sessions at the Billy Graham School of Evangelism and attended the School of Practical Christianity and several Ministers Schools at Goshen College and Eastern Mennonite College. He earned a B.A. from Vennard College in Oskaloosa, Iowa, in 1968. Dean was very active in various church committees and evangelical efforts and taught Bible for three years at Iowa Mennonite School. He served on the Iowa-Nebraska Conference Mission Board for nine years. His service to the conference included Conference Youth Secretary, Conference Moderator, Conference Leadership Board member, Mennonite Church General Board member for six years, and Mennonite Salary Advisory Committee member. Dean was the Choice Books distributor and chaired the Mid-Prairie Crusade for Christ as well as the Keystone Bible Institute. He also served as chair of the Mid-Prairie Ministerial Association and was the President of the Board of Young House, a boy’s home in Washington, Iowa. He was overseer of three Spanish churches in Muscatine and Davenport for 20 years. Dean was also active in the Iowa State Holstein Association. After serving at Lower Deer Creek for nearly 30 years, Dean served as interim pastor at Gulfhaven Mennonite Church, Gulfport, Mississippi; Sugar Creek Mennonite Church, Wayland, Iowa; Sycamore Grove Mennonite Church, Garden City, Missouri; West Union Mennonite Church, Parnell, Iowa; and the English River Church of the Brethren, South English, Iowa. A memorable event in Dean’s life was when he was a delegate to the 1967 Mennonite World Conference in Amsterdam, Netherlands, which included a six-week study tour of Europe and the Holy Land. He found it gratifying to see lives changed by Christ, and he participated in the ordinations of over a dozen ministers. He had a particular interest in evangelism and held several series of revival meetings in seven states, giving him the privilege of watching people respond to the Gospel. Dean believed that a church that focuses on reaching out to others will avoid many problems that arise when congregations are concerned only about themselves. Dean and Lois always enjoyed the ministry. They appreciated the support and friendliness of people wherever they served and firmly believed in preaching and teaching Jesus as the way of salvation and the answer to people’s deepest needs. Dean is survived by his wife, Lois, of Kalona; 6 children: Pat (Loren) Swartzendruber of Harrisonburg, VA; Richard (Donna) of Wellman, IA; Fred (Mina) of Goshen, IN; Scott (Jan) of Kalona, IA; Cindy (Dan) Steiner of Goshen, IN; and Kris (Morris) Miller of Bradenton, FL; 16 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and 2 sisters: Ruth (Alvin) Grasse of Red Deer, Alberta, Canada and Mary Lechner of Seward, Alaska. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to Iowa City Hospice or Mennonite Mission Network.

Carolyn Jean Claypool, age 70, of North English, died on Monday, August 22, 2011, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, August 25, 2011 at the Powell Funeral Home in North English. Visitation will be from 4 pm to 7 pm at the funeral home on Wednesday, August 24th. Burial will be in the North English Cemetery. A memorial fund has been established for the North English Community Center. Carolyn was born icon on September 25, 1940 in Washington, D.C., the daughter of William L. and Hazel Weaver Boswell. She grew up blocks from the US Capital and graduated from high school in Washington DC in 1958. She was united in marriage to Winston R. Claypool on February 19, 1960, at the Pennsylvania Avenue Baptist Church in Washington, D.C. After their wedding they headed to North English where the “city girl” grew to love the country life. Carolyn worked a short time for Attorney Clarence Off, and as the city assessor, and babysat. She later worked 22 years as a secretary in the Bio-Engineering Department at the University of Iowa. Carolyn suffered a stroke in March 2004, which dramatically changed her life. She and Winston traveled to China for 4 months where she received therapy and care. Carolyn enjoyed traveling in their motor home, watching her birds, crocheting before her stroke and loved being with her family. Carolyn is survived by her husband Winston of North English; two daughters: Tina (Jay) Mihulka of Wentzville, MO and Tammy (Jeff) Hootman of Iowa City, IA; 3 grandchildren: Sam, Molly and Tucker Mihulka; a brother Mike (JoAnn) Boswell of Mechanicsville, MD; a sister Patricia DeSaulneir of Myrtle Beach, SC ; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents.
