Louis F. Gugel was born icon December 12, 1919 in Wayland, Iowa the son of John and Tillie (Rapp) Gugel. He attended Flowers Elementary and graduated from Wayland High School in 1938. On July 18, 1948 he was united in marriage to Orpha Yoder in Wayland. She died in April of 1979. On June 16, 1984 he was united in marriage to Lois Brenneman Swartzendruber at the Lower Deer Creek Mennonite Church. Louis lived in the Wayland, Brighton and Kalona communities where he was a carpenter. He did Civilian Public Service in Colorado and Michigan, and worked in voluntary service serving three terms in Ecuador and a term in Texas. He was a member of the Lower Deer Creek Mennonite Church. In his retirement years he caned chairs. Louis died on Tuesday, August 23, 2011 at the Pleasantview Home in Kalona from renal failure at the age of 91 years. Louis is survived by his wife Lois of Kalona; three sons - Donald (Ruth Ann) of Washington; Duane (Karen) of Kalona; David (Julie) of Wauseon, OH; a step son Scott Swartzendruber (Beth) of Kalona; eight grandchildren - Jeremy Gugel (Lisa), Natasha Miller (Ryan), Kyle Gugel, Shannon Redig (Scotty), Aleigha Gugel, Jessica Smallman (Jeremy), Caleb Gugel, Brooke Gugel, two step grandchildren - Maryjo Rich (Matt), Wendi Neff-Ulin (Michael) seven great grandchildren - Micah, Ashlyn, Traevin Gugel, Aubrey, Cameron, Lauren Miller, Lilly Redig; and a brother Ezra Gugel of Washington. He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Orpha, an infant son, a grandson Shaun Gugel, and a brother Edward Gugel. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 27, 2011 at the Lower Deer Creek Mennonite Church in rural Kalona. Pastor Don Patterson and Pastor Dick Swartzendruber will officiate. Burial will be in the Lower Deer Creek Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 1:00 - 8:00 p.m. on Friday at the Yoder-Powell Funeral Home in Kalona where the family will greet friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. A memorial fund has been established for the Ecuador Project of Central Plains Mennonite Conference.

Susanna Gingerich was born icon October 3, 1921 in Kalona, Iowa the daughter of John D. and Amanda (Miller) Gingerich. She passed away July 12, 2011 at her home in Kalona at the age of 89 years, 9 months and 9 days from respiratory complications. She accepted Christ in her youth and was baptized in the Old Order Amish Church and remained a faithful member until her death. Susanna is survived by her half brother David Gingerich and wife Vera of Kalona, six nephews and four nieces : Daniel Gingerich (Miriam) of Lockridge; Galen Gingerich (Beth) of Seward, NE; Leslie Gingerich (Marlene) of Congress, AZ; Wesley Gingerich (Karen) of Kokomo, IN; John Dale Gingerich (Wanda) of Kalona; Fred Gingerich (Lillian) of Irvington, KY; Ollie Gingerich, Miriam Gingerich, Nina Miller (Vernon), Susanna Gingerich all of Kalona; and thirty great nieces and nephews. Susanna was preceded in death by her parents John and Amanda; her step mother Anna; a brother Lloyd Vernon; and a great niece Krystle. Susanna’s family wishes to thank everyone for the love, prayers, food and many acts of kindness expressed to them at this time of loss. Funeral Services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Friday, July 15, 2011 at the John Dale Gingerich residence at 2179 Johnson Washington Rd SW in rural Kalona. Bishop Vernon Yoder will officiate. Burial will be in the South Gingerich Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 4:00 p.m. Wednesday at the John Dale Gingerich residence and will continue all day on Thursday. The Yoder-Powell Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

SIGOURNEY - James Grove, Sr., age 86, of Sigourney, died Monday, October 1, 2012, at the Sigourney Care Center. James was born icon September 6, 1926, in South English, Iowa, to Homer and Dorothy (Miller) Grove and graduated from South English High School. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. James was united in marriage to Shirley Utterback. To this union they were blessed with four children: Jim, Lyle, Shirley and Larry. The couple later divorced. James was a life long farmer retiring in 1992. He enjoyed having coffee with the guys, going to his daughter’s on Friday night for supper with the grandchildren, going out to eat, Old Threshers, driving around and working on the farm. Survivors include two sons: James, Jr. of Des Moines and Lyle of Ankeny; a daughter: Shirley Ann (Dan) Kelderman of Oskaloosa; 3 grandchildren: Chelsie, Abby and Caleb Kelderman; a brother: Charles Grove of South English and a sister: Phyllis James of Ft. Worth, Texas and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a son: Larry Grove. Celebration of Life Service will be 10:00 am Friday, October 5, 2012 at the Powell Funeral Home in Sigourney. Burial will be in the South English Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at Powell Funeral Home in Sigourney. Memorials are for Keokuk County Hospice.

Pearl Gladys Mound was born icon February 2, 1911 in rural Keota, Iowa the daughter of Herman and Matilda (Kracht) Luers. She graduated from Keota High School. On April 30, 1933 she was united in marriage to Keith Mound at her parents home in Keota. She has lived in the Keota community all of her life where she owned and operated the Central Café for 45 years. She was a member of the United Church of Faith and a founding member of the L.G.V Club. Pearl enjoyed seeing people, visiting and making homemade pies. Pearl died on Monday, October 1, 2012 at the McCreedy Home in Washington at the age of 101 years. Pearl is survived by a son - Roger ( Nan) Mound of Plover, Wisconsin; five grandchildren, four great grandchild, and five great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Keith, a son James ( Patricia) Mound; three sisters - Louise Giles, Alma Turnipseed, Marie Britten; and two brothers - Albert and Carl Luers. Celebration of life service will be held 10:30 am Friday, October 5, 2012 at United Church of Faith in Keota, Iowa. Pastor Remigio Panlaqui will be officiating. Burial will be at the Keota Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:30 to 7 pm Thursday, October 4, 2012 at Powell Funeral Home in Keota. Memorial fund has been established for the Keota Fire Department and Keota QRS.

Bonnie "Lynn" Knerr

WELLMAN-Bonnie “Lynn” Knerr, age 53, of Wellman, died Friday, October 5, 2012, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. Lynn was born icon August 20, 1959 in Washington, Iowa, to Gerald and Bonnie (Neal) Smith, Sr. She graduated from Keota High School and attended Iowa State University for three years. On January 2, 1982, she married icon Roger Knerr at her parents’ home near South English. Lynn was a homemaker and worked as a cleaning lady for 20 years at several locations. She enjoyed her family, friends, reading, playing backgammon, card games, crosswords, hand-held games and playing with her cats and dogs. Survivors include her husband: Roger of Wellman; two children: Shaun Knerr of Wellman and Ashley Knerr of Ely; step-mother: Roberta Smith of South English; brothers: Gerry Smith, Jr. and wife Violet of Keota, Kenny Ragsdale of Texas, Robert Smith and wife Heather of South English; sister: Denise Ehrman of Keota; mother-in-law: Shirley Knerr of Wellman; many nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles. She was preceded in death by her parents: Gerald and Bonnie Smith; infant brother: Jimmy; sister: Melody “Sam” Reed and husband Steve; father-in-law: Richard Knerr and her grandparents. Visitation is from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 10, 2012, at Powell Funeral Home in Wellman. Cremation will follow the visitation and no services are planned at this time. A general memorial fund has been established. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Wellman is caring for Lynn and her family.

WAYLAND - Gary Dale Karr was born icon August 30, 1942 in Richland, Iowa the son of Frank and Ruth (Smith) Karr. He grew up in Washington county and moved to Wayland in 1971. On June 25, 1967 he was united in marriage to Viola Young in Washington. He worked at Modine, Kalona Plastics, Nypro Iowa and the University of Iowa as a custodian. He enjoyed fishing, horseback riding, deer hunting, and bowling. Gary died on Sunday, October 7, 2012 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City at the age of 70 years. Gary is survived by his wife Viola, a daughter Sandra Karr, a son Jason Karr all of Wayland; three sisters - Linda Nason of Harper, Julie Karr of Keota, Holly Sue White of Ottumwa; and two brothers - Greg Karr of Harper, and Scott Karr of West Chester. He was preceded in death by his parents, and three sisters Karen Karr, Shelby Karr and Connie Bienart. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, October 11, 2012 at the Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints in Washington. Burial will be in the Wellman Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5-7:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the Yoder-Powell Funeral Home in Kalona. A memorial fund has been established for Washington County Hospice.

IOWA CITY-Jaynane “Jayne” Lillig, age 69, of Iowa City, died of pancreatic cancer Monday, October 8, 2012, at her home. Jayne was born icon April 22, 1943, in Washington, Iowa, to James, Sr. and Lillian (Osweiler) Coffman. She graduated from Keota High School in 1961 and attended Ottumwa Heights College. On July 6, 1963, Jayne married icon Michael “Mick” Lillig at St. Mary Catholic Church in Keota. The couple lived in Keota until moving to Iowa City in 1994. Jayne worked as an associate for Keota Schools for several years. She then worked in the Communications Studies department at the University of Iowa following their move to Iowa City. Jayne, along with her late husband, Mick, were co-owners of River Products Company and subsidiaries of Iowa City. Jayne was associated with the quarrying industry for over 50 years. In 2002, Mick, Jayne and long-time business partner Tom Scott founded and funded the community based RPC, Inc. Charitable Foundation. Jayne has served the past 11 years as chief presenter of the Chris Lillig Memorial Cup to the all-around trophy winner of the foundation sponsored Old Capitol Criterium bicycle races held each spring in downtown Iowa City. Jayne was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Iowa City. She and her ‘63 Corvette were members of the Classy Chassy Cruisers Car Club. Jayne enjoyed traveling the world and doing many activities with her many friends. Survivors include her brother: James B. Coffman, Jr. and wife Claudette of Iowa City and daughter-in-law: Teresa Lillig Lineer. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband: Mick in 2004 and son: Christopher in 1996. Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, October 12, 2012, at Holy Trinity Parish - St. Mary Catholic Church in Keota with Rev. Charles Fladung and Rev. Rudolph Juarez officiating. Burial will be at Holy Trinity Cemeteries - St. Mary Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 11, 2012, at Powell Funeral Home in Keota, where there will be a wake service at 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established for the Jayne Lillig memorial or donor’s choice. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Keota is caring for Jaynane and her family.

WELLMAN - E. Duane “Mouse” Miller was born icon December 8, 1929 in Wellman, Iowa the son of Melvin and Marjorie (Blumenstein) Miller. He graduated from Wellman High School in 1947 and Iowa State University in 1952. He served in the Air Force during the Korean war. Duane worked for Maple Crest, Herman Feeds, Allied Mills and he also worked for the University of Iowa Hospitals in the medical records department for 11 years. Duane was a member of the First Baptist Church in Wellman, Wellman Rotary Club, KAABA Shrine, 50 year member of the Washington Lodge #26, and a 59 year member of the American Legion. He enjoyed attending Minnesota Vikings and Iowa Hawkeye games and he attended the Drake Relays for 49 straight years. Duane died on Monday, October 8, 2012 at the Washington County Hospital in Washington at the age of 82 years. Duane is survived by a sister Sharleen Freel of Wellman, two brothers Dean Miller of Wellman, Bill and wife Karyl Miller of Washington and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Don Miller, two sisters-in-law JoAnn Miller and Patty Miller, a brother-in-law Wes Freel, a nephew Steve Freel, a niece Kathy Miller, a great niece Allison Yoder and 2 great nephews: Zachary Miller and Bradley Miller. Celebration of Life Service will be held 10:30 AM on Friday, October 12, 2012 at the First Baptist Church, Wellman. Pastor Mark Larson will officiate. Burial will be in the Wellman Cemetery with military rites. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 2-8 PM at the Powell Funeral Home, Wellman where the family will greet friends from 4-8 PM and a Masonic service will be held at 7:00 PM.. A memorial fund has been established for the First Baptist Church, Wellman and the Shrine Hospital.

Frances W. Riess

North English, Iowa

Frances Gilmore Riess, 95, of North English, died Tuesday, October 9, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. Upon cremation, there will be family graveside services at the North English Cemetery. Memorial funds have been established for the Valley View Assisted Living in North English and the English Valley’s High School “Dollars for Scholars”. Frances Wilson Gilmore was born icon September 18, 1917, in Garden Grove, Iowa, to Alexander and Sarah Little Gilmore. Her family moved to Williamsburg in 1918 and then to North English in 1920. She attended elementary school and graduated from North English High School in 1935. She was a teacher at Grant School in Keokuk County from 1936-1937. In 1937, Frances married icon William Riess in Galesburg, Illinois, and returned to farm near North English until 1977 when they built a home in town. William died in 2004, and Frances moved to Valley View Assisted Living in 2008 and remained there until her death. Frances was active in support of her children’s activities including music boosters, boy scouts, 4-H, and numerous others. Her greatest joy was her family, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Frances and William were strong advocates of education; they supported their children and spouses and grandchildren in their educational endeavors. Their family has achieved a total of 21 degrees from various colleges and universities. Survivors include her daughters Ramona (John) Hall from North English, Sandra (Dexter) Hyde of Cedar Falls, and son William, Jr. (Beverly) from West Des Moines, five grandchildren, Julie (Hyde) Creeden and husband Paul of Cedar Falls, Michelle (Hyde) Swanson and husband Chad of Cedar Falls, Sarah (Hall) Dickson and husband Lance of The Netherlands, Chris Hall and wife Jamie from North English, and Jennifer (Riess) Lundberg and husband Tim of Urbandale. Frances thoroughly enjoyed her 11 great-grandchildren: Matthew and Elizabeth Swanson, Margaret and Thomas Creeden, Allie and Luke Lundberg, Tucker, Madeline, and Elijah Dickson, and Kaden and Delaney Hall. Frances was preceded in death by her husband William, her parents and two sisters: Margaret Kirkpatrick and Evelyn Harvey; four brothers: Robert, Fred, George, and David Gilmore.
