Darwin “Dean” Cartwright, age 81, died Wednesday, October 24 at Iowa City Hospice in Iowa City. Dean was born icon in Villisca, Iowa on September 12, 1931 to Paul and Vera (Arbuckle) Cartwright. He graduated in 1950 from Osceola High School in Osceola, Iowa. In July of 1951 he joined the Navy and attended the U.S. Naval School for training in electronics and communications. He served as a Communications Technician during the Korean War, stationed on Oahu, Hawaii. After discharge from the service in June of 1955, he attended San Jose Community College and San Jose State to study electrical engineering. For 3 summers between college academic years, he travelled to Alaska to work as a fire fighter, on the U.S. Distant Early Warning (DEW) line, and on construction of communication towers near Fairbanks, Alaska. In 1959 he returned to Iowa. In 1961 he married icon Judith Chadwick in Indianola, IA. They moved to Rapid City, South Dakota and then Tucson, Arizona where he worked for Martin Marietta on U. S. Missile Sites. After a short stay in Sunnyvale, California and Ames, Iowa they settled in at Lake Mills, Iowa where they lived for 12 years. In 1981, they moved to Lucas, Iowa where Dean worked for the Iowa Department of Transportation until his retirement in 1997. After retirement, they decided they wanted to be closer to their daughter and family so they moved to North English, Iowa. Dean loved to attend golf meets, soccer games, volleyball meets and band concerts that his grandchildren were involved in. He enjoyed golfing, fishing and woodworking with his grandchildren. He spent many hours in his woodworking shop building furniture for family members. He is survived by his wife, Judy of North English, his daughter, Lori Flugum (Doug) of Cedar Rapids, three grandchildren, Ryan Flugum (Jenna) of Columbia, Missouri, and Austin Flugum and Kerstin Flugum of Cedar Rapids. Also surviving is a brother James Cartwright of Oseola. He was preceded in death by his parents. Visitation will be held at Powell Funeral Home on Friday, October 26 from 5:00 – 7:00 PM. Burial and grave side rites will be held at 10:30 AM on Saturday, October 27 at Maple Hill Cemetery in Osceola, Iowa. Fellowship will follow at the First Christian Church in Osceola. In Lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established for iowa City Hospice and Cancer Care of Iowa City.

Arletta was born icon on October 18, 1920, near Sigourney, IA the daughter of Virgil H. and Anna (Winegarden) Fridley. She married icon W. Wayne Edmundson on February 8, 1939. Arletta was a homemaker and worked for a short time in the grocery store in South English. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Marion and a member of the United Methodist Women and Rebecca Circle. Arletta was a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She will be greatly missed and remembered with much love. Arletta is survived by her daughters Dixie (Leland) Fry of Cedar Rapids and Sheryl Axmear of Castle Rock, CO; grandchildren Kristin and Sara Fry of Cedar Rapids, Ethan and Molly Fry of Marion and Melissa and Nicholas Hill of Castle Rock, CO: great grandchildren Owen, Emily, Carter and Harper Fry and Olivia and Jacob Hill; a sister Alberta (Bernard) Volz of Grimes; sisters-in-law Ethyl Edmundson of Sigourney, Jessie Blaylock of North English, and Harriett (Gerald) Denison of Keswick; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and son-in-law William T. Axmear.

KEOTA - Robert E. “Bob” Baughman, age 86, formerly of Keota, died Thursday, November 1, 2012, in Augusta, Georgia. Bob was born icon February 7, 1926 on a farm southeast of Keota, the son of Curvin and Margaret (Seitsinger) Baughman. He attended rural schools in the South English and North English areas and graduated from North English High School in 1943. Shortly after, he entered the U.S. Navy where he served for 32 months, mainly aboard the U.S.S. Tappahannock in the Pacific Theatre. After military service he was employed in heavy high-line construction, having worked in 24 states for 43 years before retiring in Augusta, Georgia in 1989. Having worked in the area, he decided to make Augusta his winter home for 23 years and lived in Davenport in summer months during that time. Bob was a lifetime member of the Keota V.F.W. Post # 4716. Survivors include two brothers: Daryl (Irene) Baughman and Cleo Baughman; two sisters: Leita Manthei and Margaret Harriman; numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister: Marjorie (Laymon) Coble; brothers: Kenneth and Cloyce Baughman; brothers-in-law: Jerry Manthei and Dale Harriman; sister-in-law: Katie (Mrs. Cleo) Baughman and nephew: Doug Roberts. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, November 7, 2012, at Powell Funeral Home in Keota, with Rev. Frances Baumert officiating. Burial will be at Brethren Cemetery in rural South English. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home. A memorial fund has been established for the Keota V.F.W. Post # 4716. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Keota is caring for Bob and his family.

Anne M. O’Rourke, age 88, died suddenly on Sunday, November 4, 2012. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 am on Wednesday, November 7, 2012, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in North English with the Rev. Joseph Roost presiding. Visitation will be from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm Tuesday, November 6th at the Powell Funeral Home in North English. Burial will be in the Armah Cemetery, rural North English. A memorial fund has been established for the North English QRS. Anne M. O’Rourke was born icon on June 9, 1924, in the Clear Creek Community near Keota, the daughter of Michael and Margaret Greiner Sieren. She attended school at Clear Creek. Anne was united in marriage to Joseph Robert O’Rourke on November 28, 1946 at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church. They lived in Keota a year before moving to the farm near North English. They moved into town in 1980. Anne worked 30 years at the English Valley Care Center. She enjoyed being on the farm, wintering in Arizona, gardening, playing cards, cooking and especially spending time with her family, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She is survived by her children: Joanne Broadus; Bob (Marty) O’Rourke of North English, IA; Tom (Maggie) O’Rourke of Earlham, IA; Angie (Gregg) Hartwig of Iowa City, IA; 10 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; sisters: Corrine Lenaghan and Theresa Peiffer; sisters-in-law Pat Sieren and Theresa O’Rourke. Anne was preceded in death by her parents, husband Joe in 2006, daughters Carolyn & Margaret O’Rourke, a granddaughter Katelyn O’Rourke, son-in-law Jerry Broadus, brothers: infants Leo & Albert, Raymond, Carl, Leonard, Joe, Elmer Paul Sieren and Sister Helen Sieren.

Kathleen Jeanette Swartzendruber was born icon December 25, 1925, near Kalona, Iowa, the daughter of Ray A. and Kathryn Pearl (Miller) Yoder. She grew up in the Kalona community. After graduating from Center High School and attending a year of college, she taught in rural schools for 5 years. She married icon Dale Swartzendruber, June 26, 1949, at Lower Deer Creek Mennonite Church. They lived in California, Indiana, and Nebraska before moving to the Pleasantview community in Kalona in 2008. Kathleen taught English as a second language for 15 years at Lincoln Literacy Council in Lincoln, NE, and worked at the MCC store in Seward, NE for 20 years Kathleen is a member of the Beth-El Mennonite Church, Milford, NE. She taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School for many years. She was active in WMSC. She most recently attended Kalona Mennonite Church. Kathleen died on Thursday, November 8, 2012 at Pleasantview Home in Kalona at the age of 86 years. She is survived by her husband, Dale of Kalona, 4 children- Karl (Lynn) Swartzendruber of Plano, TX, Myra (Patrick) Tierney of Lakewood, CO, John (Evonne) Swartzendruber of Indianapolis, IN and David (Kay) Swartzendruber of Lakewood, CO; 7 grandchildren; 2 brothers- Robert K. Yoder of Kalona and Hobert Yoder of Iowa City and a sister, Marjorie Waybill of Harrisonburg, VA. She is preceded in death by her parents and a granddaughter, Sara Kay Swartzendruber. Celebration of Life Service will be held 2:00 pm Sunday, November 11, 2012 at Lower Deer Creek Mennonite Church in Kalona. Rev. Scott Swartzendruber will officiate. Burial will be in the Lower Deer Creek Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 8:00 pm Saturday, November 10, 2012 at the Yoder-Powell Funeral Home in Kalona. A general memorial fund has been established. The Yoder-Powell Funeral Home in Kalona is in charge of the arrangements.

H. Lynn Miller was born, August 20, 1927 in Stuttgart, AR the son of Thomas and Ruth (Brenneman) Miller. On March 22, 1951 Lynn was united in marriage to Mertice Brenneman at Lower Deer Creek Mennonite Church in rural Kalona. They lived in rural Wellman for 61 years where Lynn farmed and raised turkeys. He was a member of the Lower Deer Creek Mennonite Church. He enjoyed singing in choirs, helping others and also did volunteer service work. Lynn died on Tuesday, November 13, 2012 at Parkview Manor in Wellman at the age of 85 years. Lynn is survived by his wife Mertice of Wellman, four children; Byron (Virginia) Miller of Minatare, NE; Georgia (Mark) Gingerich of Goshen, IN; Joan (Greg) Miyauchi of Grand Lake, CO; and Tom (Michelle) Miller of Kalona; fourteen grandchildren; six great grandchildren; a brother Ned (Maggie) Miller of Des Moines; two sisters; Jean Thomas of Lancaster, PA; Nedra (Leo) Schrock of Kalona; and a sister- in- law Wanda Miller of Kalona. He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 granddaughters; Heather Gingerich and Amanda Miller, a brother Roger Miller and a brother-in-law Leon Thomas.

Helen Joan Lee, age 79, died at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City, on Tuesday, November 13, 2012. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:00 AM on Monday, November 19, 2012, at the United Methodist Church in Webster, Iowa, with Rev. John Tunnicliff officiating. Visitation will be on Sunday, November 18th from 4 PM to 7 PM at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North English. Burial will be in the South English Cemetery. A memorial fund has been established for Webster United Methodist Church. Helen Joan Lee was born icon on January 20, 1933, at home near Webster, Iowa, the daughter of J. W. And Mary Weber Snakenberg. She graduated from Webster High School and worked several years at Rockwell-Collins in Cedar Rapids. Helen married icon Roscoe Lee on September 20, 1959, in Sigourney, Iowa. Helen lived in the Webster community until becoming a resident of the English Valley Care Center in January 2012. She was a member of and former Sunday School teacher at the Webster United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the UMW. Helen was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother and she kept a meticulous home. She enjoyed having card parties with the Webster neighbors and going to Texas and Arizona to visit their son Kevin and his family. She is survived by her husband Roscoe of Webster; sons: Bryan (Valerie) Lee of Webster, Iowa; Kevin Lee of Chandler, Arizona; five grandchildren: Zachary, Jason, April, Ben and Giselle Lee. Also surviving is a sister Mignon Dumont of Sigourney, a brother David Snakenberg of Sigourney, and a brother-in-law Gene Snakenberg of Sigourney. Helen was preceded in death by her parents, a sister Marietta Snakenberg, half-brother Ray (Paduke) Snakenberg and a brother-in-law Jerry Dumont.

KEOTA - Dorothy Fickling, age 98, of Keota, died Wednesday, November 14, 2012, at All American Restorative Care in Washington. Dorothy was born icon July 13, 1914, in Iowa County, the daughter of George and Stella Pearl (Walton) Groff. She grew up north of Wellman and received her education in rural schools. On December 10, 1952, she married icon Waldo Fickling in West Chester. The couple made their home in the West Chester area, where Dorothy was a homemaker. She enjoyed cooking, gardening and going to town to shop. Survivors include her son: Rodney Fickling of Washington and one grandson: Jeremy Fickling of Washington. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband: Waldo in 1989; brother: Warren Groff and sister: Goldie Nejedley. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 17, 2012, at Powell Funeral Home in Keota, with Pastor Vince Homan officiating. Burial will be at Wellman Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. on Friday, November 16, 2012, at the funeral home. A memorial fund has been established for All American Restorative Care. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Keota is caring for Dorothy and her family.
