Ruth Marie Miller was born icon June 29, 1921 at her parents home in rural Wellman, Iowa the daughter of Chris and Matilda (Swartzendruber) Gingerich. She attended Greene Center School and West Union Mennonite Church in her youth. In 1940 Ruth graduated from Parnell High School. She then went on to attended Cedar Falls Teacher’s College in the summer, and taught one room country grade schools for six years. She attended classes at Hesston College one year and studied one summer at Goshen College. In 1944-45 she did Child Evangelism work in Denver, Colorado. Ruth was united in marriage on December 28, 1947 to D. Max Miller at the Wellman Mennonite Church. They lived north Wellman where they farmed. Ruth was a member of the Wellman Mennonite Church, where she enjoyed teaching summer bible school and Sunday school as well as attending WMSC as long as her health permitted. Ruth died on Sunday, November 18, 2012 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City at the age of 91 years. Ruth is survived by her son Rex Miller of Wellman. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband D. Max Miller; and three half brothers; Jerry, Leroy and Aldine Gingerich and a half sister Luella Blosser. Celebration of life service will be held 10:00 a.m Wednesday, November 21, 2012 at the Wellman Mennonite Church in Wellman. Pastor Nathan Ramer will officiate. Burial will be held at the Wellman Mennonite Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 2-8 p.m. at the Powell Funeral Home in Wellman. A memorial fund has been established for Wellman Mennonite Church.

HARPER - John Robert Gretter, age 91, of Williamsburg, formerly of Harper, died Sunday, November 18, 2012, at Highland Ridge Nursing Home in Williamsburg. Robert was born icon February 10, 1921, in Keota, to Wynn Craven and Margaret (Flander) Gretter and graduated from St. Elizabeth High School. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. On February 11, 1947 he married icon Bertha A. Fladung at St. Mary Catholic Church in Keota. The couple lived and farmed in the Harper area. Robert was a member of Holy Trinity Parish - St. Mary Catholic Church in Keota and St. Mary Catholic Church in Williamsburg, the Knights of Columbus, and was a former member of the V.F.W. in Brooklyn. He enjoyed working with and for his neighbors, old time dancing, having a good time and his grandkids. Survivors include his wife: Bertha of Williamsburg; daughter: Barbara Jean (Dr. Randy) Blaylock of Sigourney; four sons: Donald J. (Linda) Gretter of Peyton, Colorado, Samuel C. (Cheryl) Gretter, Anthony C. (Pam) Gretter and Kenneth A. (Angie) Gretter, all of Harper; 12 grandchildren; two step grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren and a brother: F. William Gretter of Keota. He was preceded in death by his parents; son: John Wynn Gretter and three sisters: Martha Miter Hammes, Dorothy Mikel and Virginia Bombei. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, November 21, 2012, at Holy Trinity Parish - St. Mary Catholic Church in Keota, with Rev. Charles Fladung officiating. Burial will be at Holy Trinity Cemeteries - St. Elizabeth Cemetery in Harper. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 20, 2012, at the church, where there will be a wake service at 4:00 p.m. A memorial fund has been established for the Holy Trinity Parish Restoration Fund or Highland Ridge. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Keota is caring for Bob and his family.

SIGOURNEY - Donna Winfrey, age 66, of Sigourney, died Thursday, November 22, 2012, at her home. Donna was born icon December 2, 1945, in El Paso, Texas, the daughter of Rev. Arthur and Helen (Skidmore) Wessel and graduated from High School in Seattle, Washington. On January 2, 1966, she married icon Jack M. Winfrey in Seattle, Washington. The couple lived in Seattle for eight years, San Diego for 16 years, San Jose, California for three years and Westminster, Maryland for 16 years before moving to Sigourney 14 years ago. Donna retired in 1998 as Manager of a Black & Decker outlet store. She was an active member of the Sigourney Christian Church and enjoyed quilting, gardening and caring for others. Survivors include her husband: Jack of Sigourney; three children: Ramah Lee Winfrey Ross and husband Larry Ross of Delta, Gary W. Winfrey and wife Melissa of Hanover, Pennsylvania and Shari Winfrey Drew and husband Tim of Braymer, Missouri; four grandchildren: Jenny, Hunter, Chris and Courtney; three great grandchildren: Michael, Maia and Rylee; three sisters: Jeannie Wessel Farabee and husband Dwayne of Ashboro, North Carolina, Ginger Wessel Dawkins and husband Rev. Junior of Randleman, North Carolina and Connie Wessel Stout and husband Nathan of Ramseur, North Carolina; brother: James Danby of Melkshem, England and step-mother: Florena Wessel of Gardendale, Alabama. She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter: Lyn Rushton and in-laws: Henry and Dorothy Winfrey. Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, November 27, 2012, at the Sigourney Christian Church, with Pastors Jim Bringman and Kyle Ryun officiating. Burial will be at Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Sigourney. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until service time on Tuesday at the church. Homestead– Helen A. Sandersfeld was born icon July 22, 1922, to Rev. Otto and Lena (Blume) Beer in Sao Leopoldo, Brazil, where her parents served as church missionaries. The family returned to the United States in 1930, and they eventually settled in Homestead, Iowa in 1938. After graduating from Marengo High School, Helen worked for a local attorney and at the Iowa County Court House. Helen was united in marriage to Waldemar (Wally) Sandersfeld on October 5, 1947, at St. John Lutheran Church near Homestead. They made their home in rural Homestead, where they raised their three sons, John, Tom and Charles. Helen enjoyed serving on the St. John’s Ladies Aid, Tuesday afternoon bowling in Williamsburg and watching sports of all kinds, especially the Cubs. Helen lived in Williamsburg from 2002 until 2011, when she became a resident at Lantern Park Nursing and Rehab Center in Coralville. Helen died Thursday, November 22, 2012 at the Lantern Park Nursing and Rehab Center at the age of 90 years. She is survived by her son: Thomas R. (Jerilyn) Sandersfeld of Iowa City; two brothers: Herb (Amanda) Beer of Cedar Rapids and Martin (Jo) Beer of Iowa City; four sisters: Paula Sandersfeld of North English, Norma Mollison and Sylvia Taulbee both of Minneapolis, MN and Lois Dunnavent of Harrisburg, PA; a brother-in-law: Vernon (Esther) Sandersfeld of Homestead; two daughters-in-law: Sandra Sandersfeld of Sioux Falls, SD and Barbara Sandersfeld Denison (Eric) of North English; four grandchildren: Erin (Matt) Nosbisch, Tyler Sandersfeld, Justin Sandersfeld and Shaelyn Sandersfeld; two great grandchildren: Rainey and Trice Nosbisch, and many nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Wally, two sons: John and Charles (Chuck) and two sisters: Dorothea and Esther. Celebration of Life Service will be 2:00 pm on Sunday, November 25, 2012 at St. John Lutheran Church near Homestead. Pastor Terry Small will officiate. Burial will be at St. John Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be Saturday November 24, 2012 from 4:00 to 6:00 pm at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Williamsburg.

KEOTA - LeRoy Eugene Ewald, age 67, of Keota, died Saturday, November 24, 2012, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. LeRoy was born icon January 30, 1945, in What Cheer, the son of Ray and Neva (Fisher) Ewald and graduated from Sigourney High School in 1963. He was drafted into the Army in 1965, where he served for two years. On June 22, 1968, LeRoy married icon Kathleen Sigler at St. Mary Catholic Church in Keota. He owned and operated LeRoy’s Body Shop for 26 years, then worked for Keota Community Schools for 17 years, retiring in 2008. Following retirement LeRoy worked part time at the V.A. Hospital in Iowa City and Gretter Motors. He was a lifetime member of the Keota V.F.W. Post # 4716, where he served as Commander for about 20 years. He also was a member of the American Legion, the Corn Cruisers Car Club, served on the Keota Volunteer Fire Department and coached Little League. Survivors include his wife: Kathy of Keota; two daughters: Christina (Rex) Brejnik of Ham Lake, Minnesota and LeeAnn (Mark) Baumert of Harper; four grandchildren: Brittany and Bailey Baumert, Mason Brejnik and Logan Brejnik; mother: Neva Ewald of Sigourney; two sisters: Linda (Denny) Weber and Nancy (Steve) Quelle of Cedar Rapids; two brothers: Ron Ewald of West Branch and Gary Ewald of Marion; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father: Ray. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, December 1, 2012, at Holy Trinity Parish - St. Mary Catholic Church in Keota, with Rev. Charles Fladung officiating. Burial will be at a later date. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Friday, November 30, 2012, at Powell Funeral Home in Keota, where there will be a wake service at 7:00 p.m. A memorial fund has been established for Hope Lodge or the Iowa Donor Network. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Keota is caring for LeRoy and his family.

Fred D. Plank was born icon May 3, 1952 in Washington, Iowa, the son of David and Faith (Wilkins) Plank. On January 3, 1975 he was united in marriage to Sandy Ross, they later divorced. He has lived in the Wellman community all of his life. He worked at Payless Cashways for 25 years and then at Gilcrest Jewett Lumber for five 5 years. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. Fred died on Friday, November 23, 2012 at Parkview Manor in Wellman at the age of 60 years. Fred is survived by a daughter Tami (David) Edwards of Riverside; a son Derik (Shelly) Plank of Riverside; 4 grandchildren; Kaitlyn Redden, Sandra Edwards, Addison and Corbin Plank; his mother Faith Plank of Wellman; a sister Sandra (Charles) Klopp of Wellman; 4 brothers; Larry (Karen) of Kalona, Greg of Wellman, Jay of Wellman, and Justin Plank of North English; a sister-in-law Sharon Plank of Iowa City; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, a granddaughter Chloe Jean Plank; and a brother Bill “Willie” Plank. Celebration of Life Service will be held 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, November 27, 2012 at the Powell Funeral Home in Wellman. Chaplain Carroll Yoder will officiate. Burial will be in the Wellman Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. on Monday at the Powell Funeral Home in Wellman. A general memorial fund has been established.

SIGOURNEY - William"Bill" Louis Roberts, age 81, of Lake Charles, Louisiana, formerly of Sigourney, died Friday, November 9, 2012, at his home. Bill was born icon April 10, 1931 in Sigourney to Milferd "Pug" and Tarana Cox Roberts. He graduated from Sigourney High School in 1949. He started in the men's clothing business in 1947 for Pfaff and Holt in Sigourney. He went to the service and was stationed at Fort Sill, Oklahoma from 1952-1954. After returning from the Army he lived in Sigourney for a short time before moving to Waverly in 1955 to work for Leuthold-Johannson Clothing until 1961. He then moved to Waterloo to work with Larry's Clothes as buyer and manager. In 1978 Bill returned to sigourney and with his wife Linda owned and operated Sox N' Sideburns (men's clothing and barbershop) and continued until closing in 1991. Bill was a member of the Sigourney Christian Church. Bill was married icon to Marilyn Chestnut and she died 2 weeks after their son Radley was born. He later married icon Marla Barthlomew and they were the parents of Scott. In 1977 he married icon Linda Hurst. Survivors are two sons Radley A. of San Francisco, California and Scott W. and his wife Tammy of Grand Prairie, Texas; two grandchildren Hilary Roberts Lee and Clinton Roberts; great grandson Drake Lee; brother Jim and his wife Joyce of Puyallup, Washington; a niece and nephew Jill Tresslar and Jeff Roberts; stepson Darby Hurst and 4 step grandchildren Amanda, Austin, Jesse and Hana. Preceding him in death, besides his parents, were his first wife Marilyn Chestnut Roberts and a brother Junior Roberts. A memorial graveside service will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 1, 2012, at Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Sigourney with Rev. Frances Baumert officiating. There will be no visitation. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Sigourney is caring for Bill and his family.

Alice J. Holden, age 87, died on Sunday, November 25, 2012, at Mercy Hospital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, November 30, 2012, at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North English. Scott Young will officiate. Visitation will be from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM on Thursday, November 29, 2012, at the funeral home. Burial will be in the North English Cemetery. A general memorial fund has been established. Alice Jester Holden was born icon on August 8, 1925, in Greenwood, South Carolina, the daughter of Robert Boyd and Sallie Alma King Jester. She was raised in Greenwood, South Carolina and attended school there. She worked at Eastwell’s Inc. Making shirts and jackets for the military during WWII. Alice met Edwin Wesley Holden who was stationed at Coronaca Air Base and on January 25, 1946, they married icon in Newberry, South Carolina. They moved to Iowa in 1946 and they made their home in the North English community. Alice attended the Methodist Church in South Carolina and was baptized at the Pleasant Grove Grace Brethren Church near Millersburg. She was a farm wife, a member of the Rebekah Lodge where she served as Noble Grand along with many other offices. She was a member of the TL Community Club, and the Ladies Auxiliary. Alice worked tirelessly to start the English Valleys School Lunch Program. Alice moved to the English Valley Care Center in December 2011. She was a character and will be missed by all who knew her. Alice is survived by a daughter Connie Hanna of Ely, IA; a son Richard (Kathy) Holden of North English, IA; seven grandchildren; and five great grandchildren; She was preceded in death by her parents, two infant sisters, an infant brother Earl, and a brother Robert Benjamin Jester.

Williamsburg - Ronald Lee Bressler was born icon November 24, 1947, in Inyokern, California, the son of Whitner and Winnagene (Inman) Bressler. He attended Franklin School and Washington High School in Cedar Rapids. On September 4, 2001, he married icon Lois Stoddard in Cedar Rapids. He worked for Wilson’s in Cedar Rapids for over 20 years. Ron enjoyed spending time with children, writing music, and was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan. At age 15 he played drums for Herb Albert and was later inducted into the Iowa Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Ron died on Monday, December 17, 2012, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City at the age of 65 years. He is survived by his wife Lois of Williamsburg; a son Todd (Michelle) Bressler of Long Beach, California; a granddaughter Chloe Bressler; his mother Winnagene Caslavka of Marion; and two step children: Tracie (Dave) Kubas of Williamsburg and Chad Von Lienen of Conroy and 8 step grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father. Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held 1:00 PM on Wednesday, December 19, 2012, at the Powell Funeral Home, Williamsburg. Pastor Gary VanHeuklon will officiate. Burial will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery. A memorial fund has been established for the St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
