WHAT CHEER-Kenneth Ford McFarlan, age 92, of What Cheer, died Tuesday, December 18, 2012, at Manor House Care Center in Sigourney. Ford was born icon October 8, 1920, on a farm north of Thornburg, to Thomas Frederick and Bessie Mildred (White) McFarlan. He started school in the fall of 1926 in Thornburg, transferred to Springdale Country School in 1930 and graduated from Gibson High School in 1938. Ford became a member of the White Oak Presbyterian Church of rural Thornburg on January 24, 1937. In the early 1950's he transferred his membership to the United Methodist Church of What Cheer where he served as a member of the Administrative Board and was head usher for several years. Ford served in the US Army from November 1942 until October 1945, where he trained in Camp Polk, Louisiana, was a member of the Co. B 56th Engineer Battalion, 11th Armored Division. He served in the European Theater from October 1944 until October 1945. Ford received the Bronze Star in May 1945. On March 22, 1943, he married icon Juanita Howard in Leesville, Louisiana. The couple lived most of their married icon lives in the What Cheer area. His working years were spent at the What Cheer Clay Products Company, Alfred J. Whyle Furniture and Funeral Home, Robinson Ford Motor Company and was appointed What Cheer Postmaster in June 1957. He retired from the post office in December 1980, then worked part time for Harden Funeral Chapel in What Cheer and New Sharon, retiring in 2006. During his years in What Cheer he served as Master of the Masonic Lodge in 1954 and was a 50-year plus member. He was a sixty-year plus member of the American Legion Post #0319 in Keswick, served two years on the Keokuk County Compensation Board as chairman, was a fifty-year plus member of the What Cheer Lions Club, served two terms on the What Cheer City Council, was very active in Boy Scouts of America several years and served as Advancement Chairman for one year, served on the What Cheer Library Board and What Cheer Housing Development, both for several years. Survivors include his wife: Juanita; two children: Gary (Barbara) McFarlan of Altoona and Carolyn Sue (Ron) Merz of Harper; four grandchildren: Kimberly (Doug) Arndt, Alison and Andrew of Indianola, Gregory (Andrea) McFarlan, Keaton and Garrison of Urbandale, Brooke Schmidt of Des Moines and Cathrine Schmidt of New York City; two step grandsons: Gregory (Charlene) Merz, Molly and Graham of Minneapolis, Minnesota and Christopher (Jill) Merz, Ben and Matt of Cedar Falls. His parents preceded him in death. Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 22, 2012, at the What Cheer United Methodist Church, with Pastor Vince Homan officiating. Burial will be at McFarlan Cemetery in What Cheer. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. on Saturday at the church. A memorial fund has been established for Keokuk County Hospice, Manor House Care Center or the What Cheer United Methodist Church. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Sigourney is caring for Ford and his family.

Ruth VerWaayen was born icon August 31, 1932 near North English, Iowa the daughter of Ira and Ethel (Glantz) Netser. On March 31, 1970 she was united in marriage to Lorence VerWaayen in North English. They moved to Iowa City in 1979. She has lived at Chatham Oaks in Iowa City since 1995. Ruth enjoyed drawing, bowling, shopping and playing cards. Ruth died on Wednesday, December 19, 2012 at Iowa City Rehabilitation and Health Care in Iowa City, at the age of 80 years. Ruth is survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters - Nona, Gladys, JoAnn, and three brothers - Donald, James and Stanley. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 28, 2012 at the Powell Funeral Home in Wellman. Burial will be in the South English Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 9:00 AM until service time on Friday.

George Hanson

Williamsburg - George James Hanson was born icon August 16, 1924 near Holbrook, Iowa, the son of Thomas E. And Mary E. (Armstead) Hanson. He graduated from Parnell High School. He served during WWII in the US Army Air Corp from Feb. 1944 to Nov. 1945. George was united in marriage to Roberta H.Edwards on September 3, 1949 in Holbrook. He farmed east of Williamsburg all of his life. He was a former member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Holbrook for many years, and a present member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, a 3rd degree Knights of Columbus and the Iburg Poulson VFW Post #8797 in Williamsburg. George and Roberta enjoyed wintering in Arizona. George died Friday, December 21, 2012 at his home in Phoenix, Arizona at the age of 88 years. He is survived by his wife Roberta of Phoenix; their children: Mike Hanson and Roberta S. Hanson both of Phoenix; 3 grandchildren: Chad (Angela) Hanson of Cedar Rapids, Robbie (Brian) Pauly of Mason City and Nicholas Hanson of Phoenix; 4 great grandchildren and a brother: Thomas (Sally) Hanson of Denver, Colorado. George was preceded in death by his parents; a son: Terry Hanson; 4 sisters: Helen Knight, Catherine McDonald, Norma Hanson and Mary Laurine Lower and 2 brothers: Clement Hanson and Joseph Hanson. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 am on Friday, December 28, 2012 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Williamsburg. Fr. Joseph Roost will preside. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, with Military Rites by the Iburg Poulson VFW Post #8797. Visitation will be Thursday, December 27, 2012 at the Powell Funeral Home in Williamsburg from 3:30 to 7:00 pm. There will be a KC Rosary and Prayers Service at 3:30.

KEOTA - Pamela J. Smith, age 52, of Keota, died Sunday, December 23, 2012, at Parkview Manor in Wellman. Pam was born icon July 4, 1960, in Maysville, Kentucky, to Frank and Wanda (Kidder) Smith. She graduated from High School in Ohio and received her LPN. Pam has lived in Keota the past 20 years. She worked as a nurse at Parkview Manor in Wellman and Greenwood Manor in Iowa City. Pam enjoyed shopping, reading, puzzles and being with her friends. Survivors include her step-mother: Linda Woodruff of Keota; two brothers: Frank of Maysville, Kentucky and Dennis of Aberdeen, Ohio and two sisters: Vickie of Maysville, Kentucky and Denise of Aberdeen, Ohio. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister: Kimberly. Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, December 28, 2012, at Prairie Flower Baptist Church in rural Washington, with Pastor Don Collings officiating. Burial will be at Keota Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. until service time on Friday at the church. A memorial fund has been established for Prairie Flower Baptist Church or Iowa Hospice. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Keota is caring for Pam and her family.

Lanah A. McLain

Lanah A McLain, a resident of the English Valleys Care Center passed away on Wednesday, December 26 at age 96. Lanah, the daughter of Clark and Jennie McLain, was born icon December 13, 1916 in rural South English. There are no survivors. Lanah was preceded in death by her parents and a brother Ralph. She attended school in Webster, Iowa. She worked on the family farm before starting work at the English Valleys Care Center in North English when it first opened. She continued working there for 28 years. Lanah became a resident there in February 2009. At her request there will be no services. Burial will be in the South English cemetery. Powell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Lorraine W. Williams, age 88, of rural Williamsburg, died on Thursday December 27, 2012, at the English Valley Care Center in North English. Memorial services will be held at 10:30 AM, Wednesday, January 2, 2013 at the Powell Funeral Home & Cremation Service, North English. Pastor Paul Nus will officiate. Visitation will be Wednesday from 9:30 AM until service time. Burial will be in Golden Rod Cemetery in Deep River. A general memorial fund has been established. Lorraine W. Williams was born icon on June 13, 1924, in Wellsburg, Iowa, a daughter of Henry and Louise Sennen Koch. She was united in marriage to James Richard Williams on November 24, 1946 in Wellsburg. They made their home near Wellsburg, Oskaloosa, back near Wellsburg and Victor before moving to her present home near Williamsburg. She worked for Holden Foundation Seeds, later Montezuma Manufacturing and in her spare time she sold Amway Products. Lorraine was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Millersburg. She was a wonderful cook and loved to tell tales of her family when she was growing up. James preceded her in death in March 2010. Lorraine became a resident of the English Valley Care Center in April 2011. She is survived by a daughter Sharon Williams of North English; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded by her parents, husband and 10 brothers and sisters.

Carl Selby
January 04, 1917 - January 02, 2013
Williamsburg, Iowa

Williamsburg – Carl William Selby was born icon January 4, 1917, in Sioux City, Iowa, the son of Bert and Ellen (McFadden) Selby. In 1931, Carl's family moved to Bronson, Iowa where he graduated from Bronson High School in 1935. Following graduation, Carl attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls. Before serving his country as a gunner's mate with the US Navy during WWII, Carl taught high school history at Wapello and Dike. On April 23, 1955, Carl was united in marriage to Agnes Weldon in Parnell. After the service, Carl signed a contract with Parnell School where he taught high school and elementary for 37 years before retiring in 1982. Carl's summer employment included Amana Refrigeration, Milwaukee Railroad, Component Homes, and in 1970, began working for Holden's Foundation Seeds Inc. Carl died Wednesday, January 2, 2013, at the Highland Ridge Care Center in Williamsburg at the age of 95 years. Carl once said, "The difference between a rut and a grave, is that of dimension." He stated, "I never found that to be true." Carl is survived by five daughters: Vicki Wise (David) of Goshen, KY, Kati Selby of Juneau, AK, Leann Wilson (Joseph) of Parnell, Karla Gallo (Tony) of Grinnell and Donna Dyson (Dan) of Palm Bay, FL; four sons: Burt Selby (Dawn Folkman) of Parnell, Bill Selby of Colorado, Bob Selby of Parnell and John Selby (Kristin) of Boone; 13 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife in 1996 and a son Scott in 1973. A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held March 16, 2013, with the family present from 10am-1pm. A general memorial has been established and may be sent to Karla Gallo at PO Box 367, Grinnell, Iowa 50112. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service are caring for Carl and his family.

Marlene (Worrall) Deatsch, age 69, of Louisburg, Kansas and formerly of North English and North Liberty, died on Saturday, January 5, 2013 at Vintage Park in Louisburg, Kansas. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, January 10, 2013 at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North English. Visitation will be on Wednesday, January 9, 2013, from 4 pm to 8 pm. at the funeral home. Burial will be in the North English Cemetery. A general memorial fund has been established. Marlene Jean Deatsch was born icon on May 14, 1943 near Deep River, Iowa, a daughter of Leighton Arthur and Eva Ruth Grimm Worrall. She grew up in the North English community and graduated from English Valley High School in 1961. Marlene married icon James Deatsch in 1963. They were later divorced. She lived in the Iowa City area before moving to Kansas four years ago. She enjoyed scrap-booking, sewing, embroidery and quilting. She is survived by her children: James (Cathy) Deatsch of North Liberty, IA; Paula Shull (Shane Feeney) of North Liberty, IA; and Kelly (Christiane) Deatsch of Louisburg, KS; eight grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; a brother Gary (Vera) Worrall of Montezuma, IA; sisters Frances (Mike) Thomas of Olathe, Kansas, and Janice (Gary) Semler of Keswick, IA; and several nieces and nephews. Marlene was preceded in death by her parents and an infant sister Sandra.

Evelyn Sieren was born icon August 24, 1918 near Washington, Iowa the daughter of Israel and Christena (Gray) Hoxworth. She worked for the American Red Cross during WWII. On February 19, 1946 she was united in marriage to Wilfrid Peiffer in Washington. They made their home near Van Horne where they farmed. Wilfrid died April 1, 1968. On June 8, 1974 she was united in marriage to Albert Sieren in Van Horne. They made their home in Keota. She was a member of the Holy Trinity Parish St. Mary Catholic Church, Altar and Rosary, Garden Club and the Birthday Club. Evelyn also volunteered at Maplewood Manor for 11 years. She enjoyed making crafts and spending time with family. Evelyn died on Friday, January 4, 2013 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City at the age of 94 years. Evelyn is survived by five daughters - Julia Miller (Duane) of Blairstown; Joyce St. John of Cedar Rapids; Marilyn Sieren (Charlie) of Keota; Linda Mather (Jack) of Cedar Rapids; Elizabeth Papesh (Dean) of Hartwick; three step daughters - Diana Vittetoe (Ed) of Washington; Rosie Vittetoe (Leo) of Washington; Mary Lou Bower of Oskaloosa; six step sons - Donnie Sieren (Edna) Keota; Bob Sieren (Katherine) of Davenport; Jim Sieren (Connie) Keota; Denny Sieren of Keota; Jerry Sieren (Gail) of New Harmony, UT; Charlie Sieren (Marilyn) of Keota; 17 grandchildren; 37 step grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren; 58 step great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands Wilfrid and Albert; a brother Ralph; a sister Velda Lewis; a son-in-law James St. John; and a step daughter-in-law Dolores Sieren. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, January 8, 2013 at Holy Trinity Parish St Mary Catholic Church in Keota. Rev Charles Fladung will officiate. Burial will be in the Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington. Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. on Monday at the Powell Funeral Home in Keota where a Rosary will be recited at 4:00 p.m. and a Wake Service will be held at 7:00 p.m. A memorial fund has been established for Holy Trinity Parish St Mary Catholic Church, Camp Courageous, and Iowa City Hospice.
