Brett Sterling Hamrick was born icon April 4, 1974 in Des Moines, Iowa the son of Dale and Marilyn (Rediger) Hamrick. He graduated from Iowa Mennonite High School in 1992. He attended Greenville College and Mercy Hurst College where he was a music major. He lived in Round Lake, Illinois and worked at Snap On Credit for several years before moving to Iowa City in December of 2008. He was currently working at ACT. He attended the Faith Baptist Church in Iowa City. He enjoyed music, opera, St. Louis Cardinal Baseball and playing ping pong. Brett died on Sunday, January 6, 2013 at his home in Iowa City at the age of 38 years. Brett is survived by his father Dale Hamrick of Iowa City; and two brothers - Chad Hamrick of Kansas City, Missouri and Randy Rediger of Kalona. He was preceded in death by his mother Marilyn. Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 PM on Thursday, January 10, 2013 at the Kalona Christian Fellowship Church in Kalona. Pastor Larry Rediger will officiate. Burial will be in the Sharon Hill Cemetery in Kalona. Visitation will be held from 2-8 PM on Wednesday at the Yoder-Powell Funeral Home in Kalona where the family will greet friends from 2-4 and 6-8 PM. A general memorial fund has been established.

HARPER - Marjorie Hotchkiss, age 90, of Harper, died Tuesday, January 8, 2013, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. Marjorie was born icon March 30, 1922, in Wellman, Iowa, to Otto and Cora (Wetrich) Ossman. She graduated from Wellman High School and Ottumwa Beauty Academy. On August 18, 1944, she married icon Gale Hotchkiss at the Chatham Airfield Chapel in Savannah, Georgia. The couple lived and farmed in the Keota area and moved into Harper in 1977. Marjorie was a member of the Kinross Christian Church, where she taught Sunday School for many years, the Kinross Social Club and was a 4-H leader. She enjoyed cooking, gardening and caring for her family. Marjorie was a compassionate person who always put others first. Survivors include two children: Karen Dawson and husband Steve of Iowa City and Tom Hotchkiss and wife Billie of South English; five grandchildren; eight great grandchildren and a brother: Harold Ossman of Washington. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband: Gale in 2005; one granddaughter: Jill Hotchkiss and two sisters: Dorothy Lyle and Loretta Stoutner. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, January 11, 2013, at Powell Funeral Home in Keota, with Rev. Jim Stout officiating. Burial will be at Brethren Cemetery near South English. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 10, 2013 at the funeral home. A memorial fund has been established for the Kinross Christian Church. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Keota is caring for Marjorie and her family.

WELLMAN - Dennis James Brown was born icon April 16, 1955 in Des Moines, Iowa the son of William and Evelyn (Broherd) Brown. He graduated from Mid-Prairie High School in 1973. On October 19, 1974 he was united in marriage to Shirley Stumpf at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Richmond. He has lived in the Wellman community all of his life. He was a truck driver for Wellman Produce. Dennis attended the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Wellman where he served on the church council and attended the Grace Community Church in North Liberty. He was a member of the NRA, and the North American Hunting and Fishing Club. He loved being in the outdoors hunting and fishing. Dennis died on Wednesday, January 9, 2013 near Fairfield at the age of 57 years. Dennis is survived by his wife Shirley of Wellman; three children - Karissa Brincks (Ryan) of Center Point; Stacey Brown (Jennifer) of Wellman; Shaylee Brown of Wellman; six grandchildren - Gavin and Jackson Brincks; Caden, Colby, Cain, and Cash Brown; his parents Bill and Evelyn Brown of Wellman; his mother-in-law Dorothy Stumpf of Kalona; and two sisters - Janice Long (Max) of Brighton; and Sharon Miller (Larry) of Wellman. He was preceded in death by his grandmother Rowena Mangold; and his father-in-law Richard Stumpf. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, January 12, 2013 at the Powell Funeral Home in Wellman. Pastor Brooks Simpson will officiate. Burial will be in the Wellman Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 2-8 p.m. on Friday at the Powell Funeral Home in Wellman where the family will greet friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. A memorial fund has been established for a College fund for Shaylee and the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation.

Williamsburg - Ruth Eloise Stout was born icon March 10, 1924, in Panora, Iowa, the daughter of Frank Lee and Helen (Burgess) Walker. She graduated from Burlington High School. She went on to receive secretarial training and worked as a secretary for the Iowa Employment Security Commission office for 34 years. Ruth married icon William Lane Stout on March 17, 1944, in Mediapolis, Iowa. She grew up in the Burlington community, lived in Des Moines after she married icon and moved to Williamsburg in 2000. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary for the Disabled Veterans. She enjoyed bowling, gardening, arts and crafts and watching the Cubs. Ruth died on Wednesday, January 9, 2013, at the Highland Ridge Care Center, Williamsburg, at the age of 88 years. She is survived by 2 children: Nancy Prizant (Ed Truslow) and Ralph (Liz) Stout all of Des Moines; 3 grandchildren: Lisa McMillin, Kelly McNulty and Douglas Stout; 2 step grandchildren: Jill Crees and Brian Truslow; 4 great grandchildren: Sidney McMillin, Stuart McMillin, Jake Stout and Phillip Stout; 5 step great grandchildren: Emily, Foss, Griffin Truslow, Sadie and Charlie Crees; a great great grandson: Bently Stout; a sister: Marjorie Nelson of Mediapolis and a brother: Robert Walker of North Webster, IN. She was preceded by her parents; husband in 1954; a brother LeRoy Walker, a sister Kathryn Hemphill and a grandson Rick Stout. Celebration of Life Service will be held 10:00 AM on Saturday, January 12, 2013, at the Powell Funeral Home, Williamsburg. Pastor Gary Van Heuklon will officiate. Visitation will be from 9:00 until service time. Burial will be at 2:00 PM in the Kossuth Cemetery, Mediapolis. A memorial fund has been established for the Highland Ridge Benevolent Fund, Disabled American Veterans or the Alzheimer’s Association.

WELLMAN - Ralph Vernon Glider, 96 of Hiawatha, formerly of Webster and Wellman passed away at the Hiawatha Care Center, on Thursday, January 10, 2013. Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 13, 2013 at the Asbury United Methodist Church in Wellman with Pastor Moody Colorado officiating. Burial will be in the Wellman Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. until service time on Sunday at the Church. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established for the Asbury United Methodist Church and the Webster Methodist Church. The Powell Funeral Home in Wellman is in charge of the arrangements. Survivors include his loving wife of 72 years, Opal. Five daughters and sons-in-law: Betty and Duane Munson, Jean and Bob Bisinger, all of Cedar Rapids, Shirley and Steve Knight of Solon, Kathy and Charlie Ford of Lincoln, Missouri, Sonja and Charlie Wald of Greenwood, Missouri, twelve grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren, a great great grandson, a sister Hazel Kelley of Eureka, Montana, a sister-in-law Doris Glider of Rock Island, Illinois, and numerous nieces and nephews. Ralph was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Carl and Arlis, sisters Vera and Opal, and a great grandchild Niklas Lars Hybel. Ralph was born icon the second child of Lewis and Jessie Canott Glider, on January 3, 1917. He grew up, on the family farm near Wellman, Iowa and graduated from Wellman High School, in the class of 1935. He was united in marriage, to Opal Wade on March 30, 1940. They spent 42 years farming, together. He was a member of the Knights of Pythias and Advanced Order of the Pythias Lodge, member of Keokuk County Farm Bureau, and Isaac Walton League. Also a member of the Sigourney Flying Club. Ralph was very active in the Webster Methodist Church, serving on committees and singing in the choir. After retiring, Ralph and Opal enjoyed 16 years at their lake home in the Ozarks. Moving back to his hometown of Wellman, Iowa, they spent 8 years renewing friendships. He and Opal made the decision to move closer, to family and lived in the Cedar Rapids area. Ralph loved farming his land, flying, hunting, fishing, trapping, camping, reading, and playing cards. Traveling to 49 states, in the Union, was a highlight. Ralph was skilled in carpentry, wood carving, poetry and oil painting. He played the accordion, mouth harp and violin and loved to dance with Opal. His love of the family he and Opal created was foremost in his life. He was a generous man of faith, character, strength and determination. He had a zest for life and adventure. As a farmer, Ralph cared for his land, so that others might also prosper and know the rewards of working the soil.

Williamsburg - Orville John William Baack, was born icon August 27, 1922, near Homestead, Iowa, the son of Diedrich and Emma (Kummer) Baack.He was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church near Homestead. He attended country school and served in the United States Army Medical Corp, his first training in Ft. Jackson, South Carolina and later stationed in the Phillipines during WWII. Orville was united in marriage to Dorothy Emma Heitshusen on July 2, 1943 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, near Williamsburg. Together they lived and farmed south of Homestead for 68 years, before moving to Williamsburg in 2001. Orville was a active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, served on the Immanuel Lutheran School Board and he also was a past member of the Oxford American Legion. He enjoyed going to the sale barn to watch the sale and have a piece of pie. Orville died on Saturday, January 12, 2013, at the Highland Ridge Care Center, Williamsburg, at the age of 90 years. He is survived by two sons: James (Marcia) Baack of Williamsburg and Donald (Christina) Baack of Arlington, TX; six granddaughters: Lynn (John) Gahring, Amy (Doug) Harrison, Rose (Paul) Cutting, Emmie (fiancé Phillip Jones), Brandi (Billy) Roe and Amber Baack; and 10 great grandchildren: Logan, Grayson &Abbie Gahring; Tucker, Garrett & Samantha Harrison; Asa & Tilla and Ella Cutting and Bailey Roe; 2 sisters-in-law: Myrle Stanerson of Williamsburg and JoAnne Baack of Cedar Rapids and a brother-in-law: Clifford Heitshusen. He was preceded by his parents; wife Dorothy in 2012; two brothers: Ivan Baack and Clifford Baack. Celebration of Life Service will be held 10:30 am on Wednesday, January 16, 2013, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, rural Williamsburg. Rev. Richard Meyer will officiate. Burial will be in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at the Powell Funeral Home, Williamsburg. Memorials are for Immanuel Lutheran Church or Oxford American Legion.

In lieu of flowers a general memorial fund has been established. Leonard Albert Steele was born icon on February 8, 1942, in Chicago, Illinois, a son of Leonard J. And Helen Mary Mikos Steele. He lived in Chicago until the age of seven when the family moved to the North English community in 1949. Leonard served in Vietnam with the US Army. On September 2, 1972, he married icon Linda Kay Frimml in Marengo, Iowa. Leonard was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in North English, served as president of the parish council several terms, was a member of the Knights of Columbus (Fourth Degree), and served on St. Bernard’s Cemetery Committee. He is survived by his wife Linda Steele of rural North English, IA; two sons: Clancy (Amy) Steele of Mitchell, S.D.; and Cheyan (Heather) Steele of Iowa City, IA; five grandchildren; and a sister Bernadine (Robert) Oberruter of Camp Verde, AZ.

Williamsburg – John William Appleget was born icon August 20, 1929 near Ollie, Iowa, the son of Dallas Dale and Clarys Eloise (Moore) Appleget. He graduated from Sigourney High School and attended Iowa State University in Ames. John served in the Korean War from 1950 to 1954, he was an Airman 1st Class in the United States Air Force. John was united in marriage to Mary Serena Beach on November 1, 1953 in Sigourney, Iowa. The couple lived in Seneca, IL while John worked at Caterpillar Tractor Company as a machinist for 32 years. After John’s retirement the couple moved to Williamsburg in 1994. He was a active member of the St. Paul United Methodist Church in Williamsburg and enjoyed woodworking. He was a good, hard working man. John died Monday, January 14, 2013 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City at the age of 83 years. John is survived by his wife Mary of Williamsburg; two sons: Charles (Danita) Appleget of Joliet, Illinois and Roy (Katie) Appleget of Fairfield, Iowa; four grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; and a brother James Appleget of Mitchellville, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter: Mary Charlene Appleget and a brother; Paul Appleget. Celebration of Life Service will be 10:30 AM on Saturday, January 19, 2013, at St. Paul United Methodist Church, Williamsburg. Rev. James Parks will officiate. Burial will be held 1:00 PM in the Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Sigourney. Visitation will be on Friday from 4-7 PM at the Powell Funeral Home, Williamsburg. A general memorial fund has been established.
