KEOTA - Duane L. Ruenger, age 77, of Keota, died Saturday, January 19, 2013, at Maplewood Manor in Keota. Duane was born icon October 31, 1935, in Portage, Wisconsin and was raised by his mother, Marguerite and step-father Archie Koenig. On December 8, 1951, he married icon Sharon E. Anderson in Indianapolis, Indiana. Duane worked for Sundstrand Aviation for 44 years in Rockford, Illinois and Grand Junction, Colorado, retiring as a Quality Supervisor in 1996. He was a member of the Baltic Lodge in Rockford and Eagles Lodge in Rockford and Grand Junction. Duane enjoyed his cars, riding motorcycles and drinking beer. Survivors include five children: Mike Ruenger of Kansas City, Kansas, Randy Ruenger of Rockford, Illinois, Kristy Braunschwieg of Watertown, Wisconsin, Danny (Pam) Ruenger of Waterloo, Wisconsin and Casey (Ronda) Ruenger of Washington, Iowa; 22 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; four great great grandchildren; a sister: Diane Gettle and a brother: Don Ruenger, both of Rockford, Illinois. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife: Sharon in 2001 and daughter: Kelly M. Barrie. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 22, 2013, at Powell Funeral Home in Keota. There will be no services. A general memorial fund has been established. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Keota is caring for Duane and his family.

SIGOURNEY - Darlene Hicklin, age 80, of Sigourney, died Sunday, January 20, 2013, at the Keokuk County Health Center in Sigourney. Darlene was born icon August 5, 1932, in Sigourney, to Earl and Golda (Leininweaver) Hammond. She graduated from Sigourney High School in 1950 and attended AIB in Des Moines. Darlene lived in Runnells, where she worked for the Department of Human Services for several years before transferring to the Sigourney DHS office and returning to Sigourney. She retired in 1995. On August 6, 1995, Darlene married icon Charles Hicklin in Clarksburg, West Virginia. Darlene was a member of the Lancaster Christian Church and Aspasia Chapter #198 Order of the Eastern Star. She enjoyed traveling and collecting glassware. Survivors include her husband: Charles of Sigourney and two cousins: Rose Smith of Whitehall, Montana and Anita Havig of Davenport. She was preceded in death by her parents. Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, January 24, 2013, at Lancaster Christian Church in rural Sigourney, with Revs. Dave Matteson and Mark Doll officiating. Burial will be at Mt. Zion Cemetery near Martinsburg. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 23, 2013, at Powell Funeral Home in Sigourney, where there will be an Eastern Star service at 7:00 p.m. A memorial fund has been established for Lancaster Heritage Association, Lancaster Christian Church or Aspasia Chapter #198 O.E.S. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Sigourney is caring for Darlene and her family.

Louise Faye Banes, age 89, died on Tuesday, January 22, 2013, at the Hospice Unit at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City, A Celebration of Life Service will be held at the Powell Funeral Home in North English at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, January 25, 2013. Pastor Michelle Williamson will officiate. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Thursday, January 24, 2013, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Burial will be in the North English Cemetery. A memorial fund has been established for Iowa City Hospice. Louise Faye Banes was born icon on December 16, 1923, in Floyd County, Iowa, and was adopted by her parents Ellsworth and Elsie Taylor Van Fleet. She has lived in the North English community since the age of seven and graduated from North English High School in 1941. Louise taught rural school near Marengo and the White Pigeon community for 1-1/2 years. She was united in marriage to William Melvin Banes on December 13, 1942, in South English, Iowa. They farmed in the White Pigeon community before moving into North English in 1978. Louise was a wonderful cook, baked great pies, and cooked at the high school for several years. Louise loved to dance. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, and served as a den mother for the Boy Scouts for many years. She is survived by her husband William of North English; a daughter Karen (Harley) Westfall of Riverside; three sons: Ronald (Barbara) Banes of North English; Jeffrey (Lori) Banes of Williamsburg; and Kevin (Shari) Banes of North English; 12 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; a sister Ethel Hildebrand of Bettendorf; sisters -in-law Marilyn Van Fleet of North English and Donna Criswell of Shenandoah. Louise was preceded in death by her parents, a sister Pearl Rogers, brothers Charles Van Fleet; Ed Criswell, and Bob Hickman.

SIGOURNEY - Ronald Eugene Lippard, age 80, of Marshalltown, formerly of Sigourney, died Thursday, January 24, 2013, at the Marshalltown Medical and Surgical Center. Ronald was born icon April 11, 1932, near Keswick, to Ernest and Josephine (Koch) Lippard and attended Sigourney schools. Ronald served in the United States Marine Corps from 1951 until 1954, during the Korean Conflict. On June 13, 1953, he married icon Velda Mae Veach at the Sigourney Christian Church. Following marriage the couple lived in California, then returned to Sigourney when he was discharged from the Marine Corps. Ronald was a carpenter with Conner Brothers for many years, then opened “Lippard’s Cabinet Shop” until his retirement. He loved spending time fishing and hunting. Survivors include four sons: Steve Lippard and wife Cathy of Sigourney, Rick Lippard and wife Carol of Ames, Don Lippard and wife Irene of Mesa, Arizona and Ron Lippard and wife Pennie of Menifee, California; seven grandchildren; seven step grandchildren; several great grandchildren; sister: Lucy Freed of Golden Valley, Arizona and brother: Jim Lippard of Las Vegas, Nevada. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife: Velda in 2000 and three brothers: Gus, Charles and Darrell. Celebration of Life Service will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 27, 2013, at Powell Funeral Home in Sigourney. Visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home. A general memorial fund has been established. Joseph Franey, Jr.

Williamsburg – Joseph E. Franey, Jr. was born icon September 24, 1922, the son of Joseph Sr. And Mildred (Halvorson) Franey. He graduated from Marengo High School, St. Ambrose University and Ohio State University. Joe was united in marriage to Margaret Harvey in 1944, they were blessed with a daughter Patti. Margaret died in 1972. Joe then found and married icon his love of 38 years Naomi Hatchell Dougherty on April 13, 1974 in Cedar Rapids. With this union he gained another daughter Linda and two sons, Mike and Van. He worked as an industrial engineer for Rockwell Collins and retired from Amana Refrigeration. Naomi and Joe loved spending time with family and their friends at the Elks Lodge in Cedar Rapids. He loved being around young people and the great grandchildren were a special light in his life. Joe served in WWII and was a member of the Elks Lodge and the VFW. Joe died Saturday, January 26, 2013 at the Highland Ridge Care Center in Williamsburg at the age of 90 years. He can now enjoy the grand and wonderful view on his porch in Heaven. He is survived by two daughters: Patti (Steve) Smith of Johnston and Linda (Bob) Driscoll of Williamsburg; two sons: Mike (Gaye) Dougherty of Okoboji and Van Dougherty of Iowa City; 10 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Joe was preceded in death by his parents, wife Margaret in 1972, wife Naomi in 2011 and a brother, James Franey. Celebration of Life Service will be 11:00 am Tuesday, January 29, 2013 at Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Williamsburg. Visitation will be from 10:00 am until service time. Memorial fund has been established for Elks Lodge in Cedar Rapids.

KEOTA - Darlene M. Greiner, age 87, of Keota, died Wednesday, January 30, 2013, at Vista Woods Care Center in Ottumwa. Darlene was born icon March 12, 1925, in Harper, to William J. and Theresa Frances (Sondag) Clarahan and graduated from St. Elizabeth High School. On January 22, 1946, she married icon James P. Greiner at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Harper. The couple lived in the Talleyrand area. Darlene moved into Keota in 1976. She was the head cook at the Keota Senior Center for about eight years and was a member of Holy Trinity Parish and the Altar and Rosary Society. Darlene was a past member of the St. Theresa Study Club and St. Mary’s Reading Circle. She enjoyed being active in various card clubs. Darlene was also an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan. Darlene's family was the center of her life. She lived for the moments when the whole family was together. She loved to cook and always had a meal and dessert ready to serve to her arriving guests. For many years she hosted Christmas and prepared a feast for her large family. She enjoyed attending her grandchildren's baptisms, first communions, school graduations and weddings. She was a proud mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Survivors include eight children: Hubert (Melissia) Greiner of Keota, Janice (Ray) Doud of Schaumburg, Illinois, Eugene (Karen) Greiner of Harper, Leon (Toni) Greiner of Keota, Linda (Terry) Powers of Ottumwa, Joyce (Charles) Dayton of Marion, Marlene Greiner of Maryland Heights, Missouri and Marion (Lisa) Greiner of Indian Trail, North Carolina; son-in-law: Don Rowland of Ottumwa; 16 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband in 1971; daughter: Diana Rowland and two brothers: Kenneth Clarahan and Elmer Clarahan in infancy. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, February 2, 2013, at Holy Trinity Parish - St. Mary Catholic Church in Keota, with Rev. Charles Fladung officiating. Burial will be at Holy Trinity Cemeteries - Ss. Peter and Paul Cemetery in Clear Creek Township. Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Friday, February 1, 2013, at Powell Funeral Home, where there will be an altar and rosary society rosary at 3:30 p.m. and a wake service following. A memorial fund has been established for Macular Degeneration research (https://www.carverlab.org/) or Holy Trinity Parish. SIGOURNEY - Lois Weber, age 84, of Sigourney, died Friday, February 1, 2013, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. Lois Rosemary Harris Weber was born icon October 8, 1928, in Webster, Iowa, the daughter of George and Ida (Van Dee) Harris. She graduated from Keswick High School in 1946 and attended Teacher’s College at William Penn. Lois taught country school at Kenersburg in Keokuk County. On August 6, 1951, she married icon Alvin A. Weber at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Keswick. Alvin and Lois have been married icon 61 years but have been sweethearts since age 17. Lois was a mother, farmer’s wife and homemaker. She loved to garden, play cards, plant flowers, decorate her home for all seasons, mow the yard and cook for her “men” and her family. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Sigourney and the Altar and Rosary Society. She attended mass and recited a ritual of prayers especially to St. Jude every day. She belonged to Dudes n Dolls square dance club and was president for several years. Survivors include her husband: Alvin of Sigourney; children: Michael (Connie) Weber and Bernard Weber, both of Sigourney, Thomas (Nancy) Weber of Keswick and Christina (Mark) Kasal of Brooklyn; six grandchildren: Gina Wiley, Jessica Moore, Alex Weber, Jennifer Weber, Jacob Weber and Joe Kasal; one great grandchild: Reese Wiley and one brother: Duane (Helen) Harris of Des Moines. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers: Bill and Maurice Harris and sisters: Theresa Lansing and Rachael Sherman. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, February 5, 2013, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Sigourney, with Rev. Charles Fladung officiating. Burial will be at St. Mary Cemetery in Sigourney. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m until 7:30 p.m. on Monday, February 4, 2013, at the church, where there will be a wake service at 5:00 p.m. A memorial fund has been established for the Hospice Unit at Mercy Hospital or St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. Dorothy Teets Swain
March 18, 1919 - January 31, 2013

- Dorothy T. Swain, age 93, was born icon on March 18, 1919, near Waterloo, Iowa, the daughter of John C. and Mabel (Teets) DeFrees. In 1927 the family moved from Becker, Minnesota to Wellman, Iowa, where she resided until moving to Hot Springs Village, Arkansas, with her husband, Lee C. Swain in August of 1978. She was a graduate of Wellman High School in 1936, and taught the rural school of Pilotburg for one year. In 1938 she married icon Leo Kinsinger until he died from injuries due to a car accident in February, 1940. In May, 1941, she married icon Lee C. Swain, and lived in Wellman for 37 years. During this time she participated in church, school and community activities, as well as assisting at her husband's veterinary office. She returned to Iowa in March of 2001. Her passions were reading all types of books, traveling, genealogy, and making picture scrapbooks for family. She and her husband enjoyed many summers at their cabin in Canada. She was a very caring person and enjoyed being with family and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband on March 20, 1990, in Hot Springs Village, Arkansas. She is survived by two sons, Lee R. Swain (Deborah) of Davenport, Washington and Gary R. Swain (Claudia) of El Paso, Texas, and one daughter, Marcia "Mush" Zapf (Tom) of Iowa City. She has 8 grandchildren; Cliff Swain (Jordan), Mark Swain (Lindy), Cindy Swain, Cate Dimisi (Kevin), Ryan Swain (Carin), Dan Swain (Kristin Goetz), Darin Zapf (Kim), and Amy Poggemiller (Bryan). She has 11 great-grandchildren; Thomas Swain, Justin Swain, Evan Swain, Grady Goetz, Leigh Dimisa, Caylin Dimisi, Caleb Zapf, Kierra Zapf, Taya Zapf, Megan Poggemiller and Camryn Poggemiller. A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held at a later date. A memorial fund has been established for Iowa City Hospice.

PARNELL- Raymond M. J. Britten, age 98, of rural Parnell, died on Saturday, February 2, 2013, at the English Valley Care Center, North English. Raymond was born icon on August 29, 1914, near What Cheer, Iowa, the son of Frank S. and Lucy Elizabeth (Haupert) Britten. He graduated from Keota High School in 1932. He served in the US Army during WWII. On August 10, 1942, he married icon Marie Anna Luers in San Luis Obispo, California. He was a life long farmer and resident of Southeastern Iowa. Raymond was a member of the Holy Trinity Parish- St. Mary Catholic Church, the Catholic Order of Foresters and a lifetime member of the Keota VFW. He enjoyed farming, working, carpentry and doing farm improvements. He is survived by his daughters Linda Grice of South English and Ethel (Gordon) Doehrmann of Williamsburg; eight grandchildren: Thomas (Dr. Jennifer) Grice, Matthew Grice, Dr. Elizabeth (Mike Cornelius) Grice, Jennifer (Vince) Dvorak, Shelby (LeDawne) Britten, Ryan Britten, Tracy (Chris) Bond and Nikki (Corey) Stackhouse, and 11 great grandchildren. He was preceded by his parents; wife Marie; son Ethan Britten; four sisters Helen Kaska, Dorothy Peck Loretta Greiner and Lucille in infancy and a brother: John Britten. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, February 11, 2013, at Holy Trinity Parish - St. Mary Catholic Church, Keota. Rev. Charles Fladung will officiate. Burial will be in Holy Trinity Cemeteries - St. Mary Catholic Cemetery, Keota. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m until 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 10, 2013, at the Powell Funeral Home in Keota, where there will be a rosary at 4:00 p.m. A memorial fund has been established for the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center.
