Lynn G. Rumer, age 84, of Thornburg, died on Friday, March 22, 2013, at Jefferson Place in Pella. Lynn was born icon on September 27, 1928, in Hope, North Dakota, to Frank A. and Vera Emily (Proctor) Rumer. He graduated from high school in Edgeley, North Dakota and received degrees from Kletzing College in University Park, Iowa and Iowa Wesleyan College in Mount Pleasant, Iowa. On June 1, 1949, he married icon Betty Haselton in Eddyville. Following their marriage the couple made their home in the Keswick and Thornburg communities. Lynn served as a student pastor in Keswick and Webster from 1949 until 1957. He then taught High School English and Social Studies at Keota, Lynnville-Sully and Oskaloosa, retiring in 1991. Lynn enjoyed traveling, reading, writing articles for the local newspaper and keeping the politicians on their toes. Survivors include his wife: Betty of Thornburg; three children: Larry (Julia) Rumer of Pella, Shirley (Mike) Pendleton of Ankeny and Dale (Susan) Rumer of Walford; five grandchildren and six great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister: Atha Trusler and brothers Dale and Wayne Rumer. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 26, 2013, at the Keswick United Methodist Church with Revs. John Tunnicliff and Vince Homan officiating. Burial will be at Sixteen Cemetery near Thornburg. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until service time on Tuesday at the church. A memorial fund has been established for the American Red Cross. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North English is caring for Lynn and his family.

Marguerite E. Plecker was born icon August 29, 1918, near Iowa City, Iowa the daughter of John and Addie (Reynolds) Kleinschmidt. She attended Hartsock rural school. On February 24, 1938, she was united in marriage to Everette Plecker at the Zion Lutheran Church in Iowa City. They lived and farmed near Iowa City for 4 years and West Chester for 14 years. They moved to Wellman in 1955, where they owned and operated Wellman Cleaners for several years. She enjoyed sewing, gardening and traveling. Marguerite was a member of the Asbury United Methodist Church, where she was the custodian for 12 years. She was a member of the Lioness Club and a 35 year member of the Rebakah Lodge. Marguerite died on Wednesday, March 20, 2013, at Parkview Manor in Wellman at the age of 94 years. Marguerite is survived by 4 children - Joyce Millice of Wellman; Karen Louise of Washington; Larry Plecker and wife Miriam of Kalona, Phyllis Martin of Wellman; 12 grandchildren; 37 great grandchildren; 11 great great grandchildren; 2 sisters - Leona Buchmayer of Solon; Bessie Capper of Williamsburg; and a brother John (Vivian) Kleinschmidt of Iowa City. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, 3 brothers Emery, Joseph, and Roy and a grandson Daniel. Celebration of Life Service will be held 10:30 A.M. on Monday, March 25, 2013 at the Asbury United Methodist Church in Wellman. Burial will be in the Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington. Visitation will be held from 3-7 P.M. on Sunday at the Yoder-Powell Funeral Home in Kalona. A memorial fund has been established for Hospice Compassus.

Mary Margaret Pope, age 93, of Newton and formerly of Millersburg, died on Monday, March 18, 2013, at Nelson Manor in Newton. A funeral mass will be held at 10: 00 AM on Saturday, March 23, 2013, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in North English with Rev. Joseph Roost presiding. Visitation will be from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM (with a vigil service at 4:00 and a rosary at 7:30 PM) on Friday, March 22, 2013, at Powell Funeral Home in North English. Burial will be in the Millersburg Cemetery. A general memorial fund has been established. Mary Margaret Pope was born icon on October 17, 1919 in Iowa County, Iowa, a daughter of James W. and Kathryn “Kitty” Carney Healey. She graduated from St. John’s Catholic School in Victor. Margaret married icon Lloyd John “Joe” Pope on March 27, 1940, in Victor. She was a life-long resident of Iowa County. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in North English. Margaret worked a number of years at the Landmark Restaurant, at nursing homes and in home health care. Margaret was a kind and loving mother. She loved to dance. She became a resident of Nelson Manor in September 2008. North English- Rickey Lee Dhondt, was born icon December 22, 1948, in Williamsburg, Iowa the son of Marvin James & Nedra (Claypool) Dhondt. He attended Williamsburg High School. Rick served in the United States Army. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing cards, Nascar and collecting coins and fishing reels. Rick died on Saturday, March 9, 2013, at the St. Cloud VA Health Care System, St. Cloud, MN, at the age of 64 years. He is survived by 4 children: Matthew Dhondt of North English, Jill Kuster of Hedrick, Jennifer (Ryan Jennings) Dhondt of Gibson and Adam (Ann Lyons) Dhondt of Williamsburg; 13 grandchildren; 1 great grandchild; his mother Nedra Dhondt of Parnell; a brother Jerry (Rita) Dhondt of Williamsburg; a sister Samra Ollendick of North Liberty and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded by his father Marvin and a brother-in-law Joe Ollendick. Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held 12:00 PM on Saturday, March 23, 2013, at the Powell Funeral Home, Williamsburg. Visitation will be held on Saturday from 10:00 AM until service time. Mary Brenneman was born icon January 7, 1911 near Kalona, Iowa, the daughter of Benjamin and Barbara (Kauffman) Brenneman. She attended East Lincoln rural school. Mary has lived in the Kalona community all of her life where she worked as a seamstress, operator at Sharon Telephone Company and cleaned homes in Iowa City. She was a charter member of the Fairview Conservative Mennonite Church. She volunteered with prison ministries correcting Bible studies. Mary enjoyed traveling and entertaining. Mary died on Thursday, March 14, 2013 at the Pleasantview Home in Kalona at the age of 102 years. Mary is survived by several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers - Ephriam, Simon, Ezra; and four sisters - Emma Hostetler, Barbara Swartzendruber, Sarah Swartzendruber and Katie Hostetler. Funeral Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 19, 2013 at the Fairview Conservative Mennonite Church in rural Kalona. Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 2-8 p.m. Monday at the Yoder-Powell Funeral Home in Kalona. A memorial fund has been established for Fairview Conservative Mennonite Church, Iowa City Hospice, and Pleasantview Home.

SIGOURNEY - Rolin Charles “Rod” Whitmire, age 76, of Sigourney, died Saturday, March 9, 2013, at Crystal Heights Care Center in Oskaloosa. Rod was born icon June 14, 1936, in Delta, Ohio, to Leroy and Leta (Gaudern) Whitmire and graduated from Liberty Center High School. On March 19, 1955 he married icon Evelyn Carol Kethel in Swanton, Ohio. Rod worked in a factory in the Toledo, Ohio area for 13 years. Then, in 1974, he became a minister and served churches in Ohio, Missouri and Iowa. While in Coffey, Missouri, he also owned and operated Whitmire Service. Rod retired from the ministry and moved to Sigourney in 1997, where he worked at Duro-Last Roofing until 2005. Rod enjoyed riding horses, hunting, fishing and playing slow pitch softball with his congregations. He was active in F.F.A. in high school and won many awards. While in Coffey Rod served as mayor, fire chief and was on the school board. Survivors include his wife: Carol Whitmire of Sigourney; six children: Charles (Anita) Whitmire of Liberty Center, Ohio, Susan Hendricks of Sigourney, Rebecca O’Brien of Sigourney, Michael (Koby) Whitmire of Bethany, Missouri, Daniel Whitmire of Eagleville, Missouri and Kelley (Reggie) Horstman of Ida Grove; 13 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren and one brother: Duane (Diane) Whitmire of Bowling Green, Ohio. He was preceded in death by his parents; son-in-law: Lee Hendricks: great granddaughter: Dacey Whitmire in infancy and brother: Cecil Whitmire. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a. m. on Wednesday, March 13, 2013, at Lancaster Christian Church in rural Sigourney, with Revs. Dave Matteson, Chuck Whitmire and Jim Eschenbrenner officiating. Burial will be at Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Sigourney at a later date. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. A memorial fund has been established for the family. Leona Ferne Brenneman Yoder was born icon October 5, 1925 in rural Kalona, Iowa the daughter of Irwin B. and Mattie (Miller) Brenneman. She graduated from Kalona High School in 1944, attended Goshen College and La Junta Colorado School of Nursing, and graduated in 1950 with a BS in Nursing. Leona worked as a registered nurse for Doctors Sattler, Beckman, and Koenig. She was a volunteer on-call nurse during the start-up years of Pleasantview Home. Leona married icon L. David Yoder on September 6, 1951. Leona was life-long member of East Union Mennonite Church where she taught Sunday School, Bible School and was a member of WMSC. She was a charter member of the Kalona Lioness Club and served as treasurer from 1979 to 2012. Leona was a devoted wife, mother, and nurse and enjoyed helping people. Leona was a resident of Pleasantview Home for 2-1/2 years where she died on Friday, March 1, 2013 at the age of 87 years. Leona is survived by her husband L. David Yoder, a son Leon and wife Suzanne Yoder of Johns Creek, Georgia, granddaughter Katherine Yoder, niece Lucy Ann Conley and husband Ottis of Crockett, Kentucky, nephew Keith Brenneman and wife Robin of Akron, Ohio, and close friends Louise Sattler and Ruth Ann Yoder of Kalona. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Edna Niles, brother Harold Brenneman, and nephew Lon Brenneman. A Graveside Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 6, 2013 in the East Union Cemetery followed by a Memorial Service at 11:00 a.m. at the Pleasantview Home Chapel in Kalona. Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. on Tuesday at the Yoder-Powell Funeral Home in Kalona. A memorial fund has been established for Pleasantview Home and Iowa City Hospice.

Sigourney- Henry “Hank” John Fowler, age 65, of Sigourney died on Thursday, February 28, 2013, at the VA Hospital, Iowa City. Henry was born icon September 24, 1947, in Vinton, Iowa, the son of Don Frederick and Mildred Marie (Alpers) Fowler. He was a 1964 graduate of Vinton High School. He served in the US Navy during Vietnam from 1965-1969, where he was a cook on the USS Aucilla. On August 26, 1978, Henry married icon Thea Adams. They later divorced. He worked at Perfex in Vinton for several years and Bender Foundry in Sigourney. Henry enjoyed rabbit and mushroom hunting, fishing and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and his dog Angel. He is survived by his children: Carrie Fowler and husband Travis Hendricks of Sigourney; Curt Fowler and wife Lacy of Fremont, Tina (Tony) Sill of Oakville and Tammy (Matt) Albright of Muscatine; three grandchildren: Robyn Holland, Trent Hendricks, and Avery Fowler; his companion of 17 years Wanda Blakley of Sigourney; four brothers: Ted Fowler of North Buena Vista, Gary (Shirley) Fowler of North Buena Vista; Tim Fowler and Jim Fowler both of Vinton; and 2 sisters: Donette (Lauren) Just of Center Point and Susan (Jim) Davis of North Buena Vista. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother Joe Fowler and an infant son Nathan Allan Fowler. Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 5, 2013, at Powell Funeral Home in Sigourney. Cremation will follow the visitation and no services will be held. Keswick - Edward William Striegel was born icon June 23, 1948, in Harper, Iowa, the son of Delbert W. and Alma Bombei Striegel. He graduated from Keota High School and attended Indian Hills Community College. He served as a Staff Sgt in the United States Air Force during Vietnam. He was a life-long resident and farmer in the Harper and Keswick communities. On December 19, 1970, Ed married icon Barbara A. Moore at St Mary’s Catholic Church in Sigourney. Ed was a member of Our Lady of the Lourdes Catholic Church, Keswick, the Keswick American Legion Post #319 and the Keswick Volunteer Fire Department. He enjoyed rebuilding Oliver tractors, farming, watching his sons hunt and fish and being “Chairman” of the Keswick Lumber Yard Coffee Club. Ed died on Thursday, January 3, 2013, at the Hospice Serenity House in Oskaloosa, at the age of 64 years. He is survived by his wife Barb of Keswick; 4 sons: Jason of Keswick; Nicolas (Dana) of Kalona, Patrick (Mary Catherine) of Monroe; and Ryan (Kylee) of Williamsburg; eight grandchildren: Neesa, Halle, Delaney, Macey, Cody, Tayley, William & Timothy; brothers and sisters: Kenneth (Deb) Striegel of Ollie; Larry (Sandy) Striegel of Harper; Joyce Webster of Rhome, TX; Francene (Lou) Lorenzo of New Jersey; Jeanette (Richard) Peirce of Williamsburg; Leo (Jacque) Striegel of Harper; Dennis (Jeannie) Striegel of Harper; Leroy (Deb) Striegel of Carlisle; Sharon (Ed) Banks of Letts; Raymond (Virginia) Striegel of Indianola; and Jane (Sam) Mendenhall of Garden Grove. He was preceded in death by his parents, infant brother Danny, and mother and father-in-law Bill & Letha Moore. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 am on Monday, January 7, 2013, at St Mary’s Catholic Church in Sigourney. Visitation will be from 2 pm to 8 pm on Sunday, January 6, 2013, at the Powell Funeral Home in North English. Burial with military rites will be in the Bailey Cemetery, rural Keswick. A general memorial fund has been established.

SIGOURNEY - Lois Lorene Killian passed away on February 24, 2013 at Parkview Manor in Wellman, Iowa. Lois was born icon October 29, 1923 in Delta, Iowa to Guy Rohloff and Neva Rohloff Schultz. She graduated from Delta High School and immediately thereafter worked as a telephone operator for a short time. On May 17, 1942, she married icon George Wade Killian. They were proud to celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary this year. To this union three children were born: Karen Koob (Sioux Falls, SD); Lancey (Linda) of Sigourney, IA; George Wade (Angie) of McGregor, IA. Grandchildren include Jennifer Larsen, Kristen Carlson, Jill Heinsius, Ann Noska, Mary Lea Forrest, Ginny Lutjen, Trevor Killian, Joel Killian and Lindsay Killian. There are twelve great grandchildren and two great- great grandchildren. Other survivors include brothers, Larry Schultz (Vickie) and Richard Schultz (Martha); and sister Mary Ellen Latona; as well as a number of nieces and nephews. Lois was preceded in death by her father, Guy Rohloff; her stepfather and mother, William and Neva Schultz; sisters, Helen Jewell and Dorothy Ruck; grandson, Phil Alan Killian and son-in-law: Dr. K. Gene Koob. Lois was a hard working farm wife and was active in the Bethel Methodist Church. After retirement, she took great pleasure in entering her hickory nut pies in the annual pie auction for the Keokuk County Hospice. Wade and Lois also enjoyed traveling throughout the U.S., Mexico, and Europe after retirement. A celebration of life service will be held at Bethel Methodist Church in rural Sigourney on Saturday, March 2, 2013 at 10:30 a.m, with Rev. LuAnn Benge officiating. Burial will be at Bethel Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday evening, March 1,2013 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home in Sigourney Donations in Lois's memory may be made to the Keokuk County Hospice. KEOTA - Judy Williams, age 65, of Keota, died Wednesday, February 20, 2013, at the Washington County Hospital. Judy was born icon August 9, 1947, in Washington, to Anton and Gladys (Sheetz) Buch. Her mother died when Judy was seven, so she was raised by her aunt, Rosey Buch. Judy attended Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic School and graduated from Keota High School in 1967. A lifelong resident of Keokuk and Washington Counties, Judy worked in Human Services for Vista, HACAP and Parkview Manor in Wayland for several years. On June 4, 1982, she married icon Charles H. Williams in Ainsworth. Judy especially enjoyed baking and her grandchildren. Survivors include her husband: Charles H. Williams of Keota; four sons: John Warren and fiancé Dawn Hurlbut of Clarence and his two children, James Warren and wife Brenda of Keota, their four children and six grandchildren, Tony Warren of Mt. Pleasant and his four children and Chas Williams and fiancé Jamie Collum of Grinnell and his two children. She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter-in-law: Ruth Warren and ex-husband: Jim Warren. Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, February 25, 2013, at Powell Funeral Home in Keota, with Rev. Jim Bringman officiating. Burial will be at Holy Trinity Cemeteries - Ss. Peter and Paul Cemetery in rural Harper. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 24, 2013, at the funeral home. SIGOURNEY - Dorothe Lee Baker (Farmer) Woods, age 86, of Sigourney, died Saturday, February 16, 2013, at her home. Dorothe was born icon June 29, 1926, in Sigourney, to Oscar and Lesta (Engle) Baker. She attended school in Washington, Iowa and graduated from Sigourney High School in 1944. Dorothe married icon Ernest Farmer in 1944 and he was killed in Germany in 1945. On September 6, 1947, she married icon Harold Woods in Sigourney. A homemaker most of her life, Dorothe worked as a Nurses Aide at Keokuk County Health Center for five years. Dorothe was a member of the Sigourney United Methodist Church, the Keokuk County Historical Society, Daughters of the American Colonists, Mahaska Chapter and Daughters of the American Revolution, James McElwee Chapter. She enjoyed her family, genealogy and reading. Survivors include her husband of 65 years: Harold of Sigourney; four sons: Don (Farmer) Woods (Pauline) of Parker, Colorado, Jon (Farmer) Woods, Hal (Barbara) Woods and Bob (Linda) Woods, all of Muscatine; two daughters: Jan Woods Conner (Dan) of Muscatine and Kay Woods Ruggiero (Vincent) of Des Moines; nine grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Besides Ernest, she was preceded in death by her parents; one brother: Cloyce Baker and one sister: Bernadine Baker Springman. Private family services will be held at Powell Funeral Home in Sigourney. There will be no visitation. Burial will be at a later date at Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Sigourney. A memorial fund has been established for the Sigourney Public Library. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Sigourney is caring for Dorothe and her family.

Williamsburg – Dale Welsh was born icon June 14, 1929 near Williamsburg, Iowa, the son of Glenn and Florence (Dall) Welsh. He graduated from Williamsburg High School. Dale was united in marriage to Arlene Osmundson on June 26, 1949 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Dale owned and operated ACE Electronics for many years retiring in th early 90s. He enjoyed traveling throughout the world, taking pictures and talking with friends and family. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Williamsburg. Dale died Saturday, February 16, 2013 at Mercy Hospital at the age of 83 years. He is survived by five children: Nicki Marthe of Williamsburg, Debbie Welsh of Cedar Rapids, Steven Welsh of Tucson, AZ, Dalene Roher of Williamsburg and Jeffrey Welsh of Williamsburg; 13 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Arlene, a grandson Bradly Beilstein and a great granddaughter Attison. Celebration of Life Service will be 10:30 am Wednesday, February 20, 2013 at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Williamsburg. Pastor Kip Murphy will officiate. Burial will be in the Pilot Grove Cemetery near Williamsburg. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at the funeral home.
