BLOOMFIELD - LaVERNE D. LAWSON, age 87 of Bloomfield and former Monterey, Iowa resident died January 26, 2007 at the Davis County Hospital in Bloomfield. He was born
March 16, 1919 in Davis County, Iowa to John Arthur and Iva Ethel Daniel Lawson. He married
Violet Myrtle Willamon in June 1949, they later divorced. He served in the United States Army during World War II. He was a farmer and a resident of Davis County most of his life.
He is survived by a daughter Keren Stevenson of Seiverville, Tennessee; 3 granddaughters; a brother Ronald Lawson of Bloomfield, Iowa and a sister Ilene Trimble of Bloomfield, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents; 3 sisters Reva, Faye and Mabel Lawson and 5 brothers Flavey, Arthur, Clifford, Marvin and Donald Lawson.
Funeral services will be at 1:30 PM Tuesday January 30, 2007 at the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield with Rev. Reg Higginbottom and DeWayne Lawson officiating. Burial with graveside military rites by Reed Whisler Post #78 of the American Legion in Bloomfield, will be in Sunset View Cemetery in Moulton, Iowa. Visitaiton will begin at 9:00 AM Monday with the family present from 6:00-8:00 PM. A memorial has been established to Hospice, Inc.
VELMA L. ROBERTS
BLOOMFIELD - VELMA L. ROBERTS, age 91 of Bloomfield died January 21, 2007 at the Davis County Hospital Long Term Care in Bloomfield. She was born
October 15, 1915 in Davis County, Iowa to Clay and Mary Gray Martin. She married
Bert C. Roberts March 14, 1931 in Davis County, Iowa. He preceded her in death October 28, 2002.
She was a resident of Davis County her lifetime. She was a homemaker and owned and operated a gas station and grocery store in Stiles, Iowa with her husband. She was a member of the Barker United Methodist Church.
She is survived by 3 daughters Nancy Holt of Memphis, Missouri, Gurada Russell of Bloomfield, Iowa and Judy Stice of Lapine, Alabama; 10 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; a great great granddaughter; a sister Ora Myrtle Peterson of Harriman, Tennessee and a brother Cardon Martin.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a daugthter Clella Mae Roberts; a sister Inez Luko and an infant sister.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 PM Friday January 26, 2007 at the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield, Iowa with Kramer Smith officiating. Burial will be in the Barker Cemetery in Scotland County, Missouri. Visitation will begin after 9:00 AM Thursday with the family present from 7:30-8:30 PM. A memorial has been established to the Barker United Methodist Church.
LEOTA G. HORTON
PULASKI - LEOTA G. HORTON, age 89 of Chillicothe, Missouri and former Pulaski, Iowa resident died January 20, 2007 at the Hedrick Medical Center in Chillicothe, Missouri. She was born
January 28, 1917 in Davis County, Iowa to Charles and Ella May Nighswonger Hutchings. She married
Jake Horton November 28, 1947 in Bloomfield, Iowa. He preceded her in death April 14, 1997. She was a homemaker and had been a resident of Chillicothe since 2004. She was a member of the Pulaski United Methodist Church and Rebekah Lodge #1 in Bloomfield.
She is survived by a son Charlie (Jyl) Horton of Chillicothe, Missouri; 3 grandsons; a great grandson and a sister Chrystal Andert of Florissant, Missouri.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband and 2 brothers Wayne and Forrest Hutchings.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 PM Wednesday January 24, 2007 at the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield with Rev. James Wakelin officiating. Burial will be in the Pulaski Cemetery in Pulaski, Iowa. Visitation will be from 1:00 PM Wednesday until the time of the service. Memorials in lieu of flowers have been established to the Pulaski Corn Show and the Pulaski Cemetery.
CHRISTINE BAILEY
DRAKESVILLE - CHRISTINE BAILEY, age 66 of Drakesville, Iowa died January 19, 2007 at the Davis County Hospital in Bloomfield. She was born
June 10, 1940 in Davis County, Iowa to Orlando and Dovie Hopkins Bailey. She was a resident of Davis County her lifetime and was a secretary in the health occupations department at Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa, retiring in 2002. She was a member of the Drakesville United Methodist Church and a lifetime member of the United Methodist Women.
She is survived by 2 sisters Barbara Moore of Drakesville, Iowa and Virginia Lockman of Moravia, Iowa; 5 nieces Teresa Peterson of Des Moines, Iowa, Pat Holmertz of Johnston, Iowa, Pam Johnson of Moravia, Iowa, Sherri Hanna of Winterset, Iowa and Susan Knapp of Bloomfield, Iowa; a nephew Bryan Moore of Drakesville, Iowa and several great nieces and nephews and great great nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a great niece Amy Johnson.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 AM Wednesday January 24, 2007 at the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield with Pastors Kevin Gingerich and Jeff Freese officiating. Burial will be in the Drakesville Cemetery in Drakesville, Iowa. Visitation will begin at 9:00 AM Tuesday with the family present from 6:00-7:30 PM. Memorials in lieu of flowers have been established to Davis County Dollars for Scholars and the Indian Hills Nursing Program.
MARSHALL TUCKER
FAIRFIELD - MARSHALL TUCKER, age 28 of Fairfield, Iowa died January 18, 2007 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa. He was born
December 14, 1978 in Birmingham, Iowa to Tim and Trudy Rysdam Tucker. He graduated from Fairfield High School in 1997 and the University of Northern Iowa in 2002 with a BA in Religion and Philosophy. He was attending the University of Iowa in Iowa City and working at Primus of Coralville, Iowa.
He is survived by his parents Tim and Trudy Tucker of Fairfield, Iowa; 2 brothers Keith (Kerry) Tucker of Henderson, Nevada and Cliff (Miranda) Tucker of Ottumwa, Iowa; nephews Hunter and Ty and niece Rilee; grandparents Frank Jr. and Jeana Rysdam of Floris, Iowa and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by a nephew Eric Tucker; grandparents Robert and Jean Tucker and great grandparents Frank and Edith Rysdam.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 AM Monday January 22, 2007 at the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield with Rev. Gordon Hawkins officiating. Cremation will follow the service. Visitation will begin at 9:00 AM Sunday with the family present from 2:00-4:00 PM. A memorial has been established to the family.
ROBERT “BOB” AXTELL
DRAKESVILLE - ROBERT “BOB” AXTELL, age 80 of Ottumwa and former Drakesville resident died January 16, 2007 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. He was born
January 24, 1926 in Davis County, Iowa to Eldon and Mearlie Cayton Axtell. He married
Mary Baird April 29, 1951 in Nashua, Iowa. He served in the United States Army. He had been a resident of Davis and Wapello counties his lifetime and was a farmer. He was a member of the National Farmers Organization.
He is survived by his wife; 2 sons Phill (Cindy) Axtell of Oskaloosa, Iowa and Keith Axtell of Drakesville, Iowa; 2 daughters Linda Axtell of Drakesville, Iowa and Deb (Mark) Fenton of Drakesville, Iowa; 8 grandchildren and a great grandson.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a great grandson Xander Axtell and a sister Betty Axtell.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 PM Friday January 19, 2007 at the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield with Pastor Kevin Gingerich officiating. Burial will be in the Drakesville Cemetery in Drakesville, Iowa. Visitation will begin at 9:00 AM Thursday with the family present from 5:00-7:00 PM. A memorial has been established to the Davis County Girls Little League.
EDWARD L. MAST
BLOOMFIELD - EDWARD L. MAST, age 82 of rural Bloomfield died January 3, 2007 at his home. He was born
November 6, 1924 in LaGrange, Indiana to Levi and Susan Gingerich Mast. He married
Elizabeth E. Eash November 4, 1948 in Topeka, Indiana. He was a farmer and had lived in Davis County, Iowa since 1978. He was a member of the Old Order Amish.
He is survived by his wife; 6 sons Ervin J. Mast, Freeman Mast, Richard Mast, Levi Mast and Harley Mast all of Bloomfield, Iowa and David Mast of Nappenee, Indiana; 6 daughters Edna Mast, Rhoda Troyer and Lena Mast all of Bloomfield, Iowa, Elsie Borkholder of Shipshewana, Indiana, Rosa Kauffman of Arthur, Illinois and Marianna Yutzy of Norwood, Missouri; 87 grandchildren; 43 great grandchildren and 2 brothers John Mast of Lake Placid, Florida and Melvin Mast of Circle City, Arizona.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a great grandson; 6 brothers and 3 sisters.
Funeral services will be at 9:00 AM Saturday January 6, 2007 at the Harley Mast residence 17189 200th St. Bloomfield, Iowa with the Minister in Charge, Melvin Schrock officiating. Visitation will be held Thursday, January 4th and Friday, January 5th at the Harley Mast residence. Burial will be in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Davis County, Iowa. Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield, Iowa is assisting the family.
PAUL WILLARD STOGDILL
BLOOMFIELD - PAUL WILLARD STOGDILL, age 92 of Bloomfield died December 31, 2006 at the Bloomfield Care Center. He was born
July 16, 1914 in Drakesville, Iowa to Orda and Sarah Welcher Stogdill. He married
Maye Lillian Armstrong October 25, 1940 in Ottumwa, Iowa. She preceded him in death April 2, 1993. He was a welder at John Deere for 29 years, retiring in 1976. He was a member of the Church of the Open Bible in Bloomfield.
He is survived by 2 sons Paul Dean and Willard Lee Stogdill both of Brandon, Florida; 2 grandchildren and 4 great grandhchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; a brother Walter Stogdill and 2 sisters Alice Ritz and Margaret Stogdill.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 AM Thursday January 4, 2007 at the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield with Pastor Charles Courtney officiating. Burial will be in the Hopkins Cemetery in Davis County, Iowa. Visitation will begin at 9:00 AM Wednesday with the family present from 7:00-8:00 PM. A memorial has been established to the Church of the Open Bible in Bloomfield.
LARRY L. GARRETT
BLOOMFIELD - LARRY L. GARRETT, age 70 of Bloomfield died December 29, 2006 at his home. He was born
May 27, 1936 in Fremont, Iowa to Glenn and Alta E. Smith Garrett. He married
Vanda L. Goode May 18, 1956 in Bloomfield, Iowa. He served in the United States Air Force. He was a security guard at John Deere, retiring in 2002 and lived most of his life in Bloomfield. He was a member of the Bloomfield United Methodist Church, Franklin Lodge #14 AF & AM and Ottumwa Lodge #16 AF & AM and was a Past Master. He was a former member of KAABA Shrine, Davenport and Knights Templar.
He is survived by his wife; a son Brett Garrett of South Milwaukee, Wisconsin; 2 daughters Lynn Spilman of Davenport, Iowa and Robin Hicks of Federal Way, Washington; 4 grandchildren; a great grandson; his mother Alta Snowbarger of Ottumwa, Iowa and 3 brothers Ed Garrett of St. George, Utah, David Garrett of Cottage Grove, Wisconsin and Jim Snowbarger of Marshalltown, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his father and step father Harold Snowbarger.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 AM Wednesday January 3, 2007 at the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield with Pastor Kevin Gingerich officiating. Cremation will follow the service, burial of the cremains will be in the Bloomfield South Cemetery at a later date. Visitation will begin at 9:00 AM Tuesday. Masonic services by Ottumwa Lodge #16 AF & AM will be at 6:30 PM Tuesday, with family visitation following until 8:00 PM. A memorial has been established to the Shriners Hospitals for Children.
Leland H. Jones
BLOOMFIELD - Leland H. Jones, 85, of rural Bloomfield, Iowa died May 22, 2008 at the Davis County Hospital. He was born
May 2, 1923 to D.F. “Shook” Jones and Annie Bennett Jones in Davis County, Iowa. Leland was a lifelong farmer of Davis County, Iowa with the exception of time served in the Army/Air Force during WWII. He married
Olive Humphreys November 29, 1942 at her parent’s home in Davis County. Leland was a member of the Ford Model T “Tin Lizzie” Club and was a charter member of the Southeast Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement.
He is survived by his wife of 66-years; a son, Frank; a daughter, Doris; a sister, Mary Hancock; 3 grandsons, Joe Forsythe and wife Sonia, Thad Jones and wife Lee, Wes Jones and wife Mandy; 2 granddaughters, Ronni Jones and Angeline Davis; and 6 great-grandchildren, Kristen and Cody, Anthony and Stone, and Anna and Jacob.
Leland was preceded in death by his parents; 3 brothers, Derrel, Edwin, and Max; a sister, Kathy, and a step-grandson, Jason.
Funeral Services will be at 1:30 pm Sunday, May 25, 2008 at the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield with Sonny Smyser officiating. Burial with graveside Military Rites by Reed Whisler Post #78 of the American Legion will be in the Howell Cemetery in Davis County, Iowa. Visitation will begin after 4 pm Saturday with the family present from 6-8 pm at the funeral home. A memorial has been established to Hospice Inc.
