BERNARD SCHAER

BLOOMFIELD - Bernard J. Schaer , age 83, of Fairfield, and former Bloomfield resident, died June 21, 2007 at the Parkview Care Center, in Fairfield, Iowa. He was born icon April 14, 1924, in Peoria, Illinois, to Jacob and Magdalena Risius Schaer. He married icon Leah Marie Mogler, November 12, 1950 in Lester, Iowa. She precedes him in death, March 12, 1997. A resident of Fairfield since 1998, he was a dairy farmer and raised livestock. He was a member of the Bloomfield Apostolic Christian Church, and was Baptized in Christ September 1949 at the Apostolic Christian Church in Peoria, Illinois.

He is survived by two sons Donald Schaer, of Drakesville, Iowa, and David Schaer, of Burlington, Iowa, three daughters Vera Lindeen, of Wapello, Iowa, Janet Schaer and Jane Reiman, both of Canton, Missouri, eight grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and a sister Helen Owens, of New Whiteland, Indiana.

He is preceded in death by his parents, two grandchildren, two brothers, Theodore and Chris Schaer, and two sisters Martha Mahnesmith and Anna Mae Gerber.

Funeral services will be at 10 AM Thursday, June 28, 2007, at the Apostolic Christian Church in Bloomfield, Iowa, with ministers of the Apostolic Christian Church officiating. Burial will be in the Pulaski cemetery in Pulaski, Iowa. Open visitation will begin at 9 AM, Wednesday, June 27, 2007 at the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield, Iowa. The family will be present to receive friends from 5-8 PM at the Wagler Funeral Home. Memorials have been established to the Bloomfield Apostolic Christian Church or The American Red Cross.

SHERRY ALEXANDER

BLOOMFIELD - Sherry Denise Taylor Alexander, age 50, of Gillette, Wyoming, and former Bloomfield resident, died June 19, 2007 at the Campbell County Memorial Hospital, in Gillette, Wyoming. She was born icon January 3, 1957, in Kirksville, Missouri to Grover Nym and Betty Jean Sylvara Taylor. She was raised and educated in Bloomfield, Iowa, graduating from Davis County Community High School in 1975. Upon her graduation Sherry attended Indian Hills Community College in Centerville, Iowa. She met and married icon Stephen J. Jackson. Together they operated a family fuel hauling business in Centerville. They later divorced. In 1997 Sherry and her two sons moved to Douglas, Wyoming where she drove for different transportation companies, hauling railroad crews, she continued this work after to moving to Gillette, Wyoming in 1999. In 2000 Sherry met her soul mate, Andy Alexander. They were married icon on December 20, 2001 in Gillette. Sherry was an artist of many talents. She loved her animals: dogs, cats, horses, and the occasional raccoon. She enjoyed camping and fishing. Sherry was most in her element collecting rocks in the mountains or shells on the beach.

She is survived by her husband Andrew Alexander of Gillette, Wyoming, two sons, Eric Jackson, of Gillette, Wyoming, and Justin Jackson, of Centerville, Iowa, her mother Betty Pexton, of Douglas, Wyoming, a brother, Stanley Taylor, of Denver, Colorado, a niece, a nephew, and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

She is preceded in death by her father, a son, Joseph Jackson, and a brother, Steven Taylor.

Memorial services will be at 10:30 AM, Saturday, June 30, 2007, at the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield, Iowa. With Pastor Kevin Gingerich officiating. Burial of the cremains will be in the IOOF Cemetery in Bloomfield. Memorials have been established to Hospice Inc. or The American Cancer Society.

Donald E. Smith

Bloomfield — Donald E. Smith age 75 of rural Bloomfield died June 11, 2007 at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics in Iowa City. He was born icon January 16, 1932 in Baylis, Illinois to Glen and Ann McLaughlina Smith. He married icon Jerry Lee Brown March 2, 1957 in Fairfield, Iowa. She precedes him in death October 14, 1998. He married icon Gloria Kelly October 27, 2000 in Bloomfield. He served in the United States Navy during the Korean War. A resident of Davis County since 1966, he was a farmer and worked Citizens Mutual Telephone Co. in Bloomfield for 17 years. He was affiliated with the Cantril Christian Church and the Word of Life Fellowship in Bloomfield. He was a member of Reed-Whisler Post #78 American Legion in Bloomfield.

He is survived by his wife; a son, Dan Smith of Drakesville; two daughters, Debbie (Rocky) McSparen and Denise (Mike) Payne both of Bloomfield; 8 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; a brother in law Buster Brown of Bloomfield and his step-father Gerald Lidtka of Montezuma, Iowa; two step daughters; Connie (David) Heiser of Pulaski and Robin (Calvin) Bartholomew of Milton, Iowa; two step sons, Dick (Sandy) Kelly of Cantril, Iowa and David (Dianne) Kelly of Sigourney, Iowa ; four step grandchildren and a step great-grandson.

He is preceded in death by his first wife and a sister, Emily Longman.

Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday June 14, 2007 at the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield with Rev. Jerry Coughron officiating. Burial with graveside military rites by Reed-Whisler Post #78 of the American Legion will be in the Drakesville Cemetery in Drakesville, Iowa. Visitation will begin at 9:00 a..m. Wednesday at the funeral home with the family present 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. A memorial has been established.

Barbara Ann Hawkins

FAIRFIELD - Barbara Ann Hawkins, age 67 of Fairfield and former Bloomfield resident died June 5, 2007 at her home. She was born icon August 22, 1939 in Ottumwa, Iowa to Thomas and Beulah Leighton Orman. She married icon James Lewis Hawkins on October 12, 1958 in Bloomfield, Iowa. He precedes her in death May 24, 1994.

She was self-employed with “Queen’s Way To Fashion”, women’s party- plan fashions from 1967 to 1987. She completed a Micro Computer Specialist Program at Indian Hills Community College in 1992. She was employed at Indian Hills Community College since 1992 and was a secretary in the Economic Development Business and Industry. She was a vocational computer instructor since 1996.

She was affiliated with the Bloomfield United Methodist Church and was a member of the Red Hat Ladies of Fairfield. She also enjoyed doing needlework, playing cards and taking care of her home and yard. She found joy in spending time and traveling with her children and grandchildren.

She is survived by one daughter, Kathy (Woods) & Craig Norris, Davenport, Iowa; two sons, Kevin Hawkins, North Fond du Lac, WI; Keith Hawkins, Tooele, UT; two grandchildren, Stephanie Woods and Cody Hawkins; two step-grandchildren, Amy (Norris) & Himar Hernandez; two sisters, Bernice Humphrey, Union Grove, Wi; Phyllis (Arnold) Staub, Ottumwa, IA; two sister in laws, Judy (Jerry) Hawkins, Bloomfield, IA; Norma Orman, Macon, MO; one brother in law Royce Jensen, Eau Claire, Wi; father in law Alva Garrett, Memphis, MO.

She is preceded by her parents, husband, mother in law, Cora Elizabeth Hawkins (Garrett), father in law, Larval Hawkins, two sisters; Maxine Jensen and Martha Weeks, three brothers; Bernard, Jack and Herman Orman and a brother in law, Dean Humphrey.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 9 2007 at the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield with the Pastor Kevin Gingerich officiating. Burial will be in the IOOF Cemetery in Bloomfield. Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m. Friday June 8, 2007 with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to her grandchildren’s educational fund and Indian Hills Foundation.

DOROTHY MAXINE COOK PICKRELL

DRAKESVILLE - DOROTHY MAXINE COOK PICKRELL, age 83, originally from Drakesville, Iowa passed away on May 20, 2007 in the Evergreen Commons Nursing Home near her daughter’s home in Averill Park, New York. She was born icon on February 18, 1924 to Clarence E. and Dovie V. Eakins Cook. She married icon David Pickrell on April 16, 1943 in San Francisco, California where she worked welding ships while her husband served in the Navy during World War II. After they returned to Iowa they operated a grocery store and farmed. In 1959 they returned to the west coast spending 22 years working and living in various national parks including Death Valley, California, Glacier Bay, Alaska, Yosemite, California and Fort Clatsop, Oregon. In 1980 they retired back to Drakesville, Iowa providing summertime fun for their visiting granddaughters. Some of Dorothy’s many hobbies were quilting, sewing and crocheting.

Dorothy is survived by a daughter and son-in-law Sherry and Dan Dattilio of Averill Park, New York; 2 granddaughters Rachel Wheatley and Emily Dattilio; 3 sisters Evelyn Parcel of Drakesville, Iowa, Marjorie Smallwood of Oskaloosa, Iowa and Lucy Balcom of Frenchtown, Montana and a brother Charles Dean Cook.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, 5 brothers and 4 sisters.

The family will be at the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield for visitation from 5:00-7:00 pm Friday, June 15, 2007. Graveside services and burial of cremains will be at 11:00 am Saturday June 16, 2007 in the Floris Cemetery in Floris, Iowa, with Pastor Kevin Gingerich officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America and may be sent to 322 Eighth Ave. 7th Floor, New York City, New York 10001.

GERALD D. YAHNKE

OSKALOOSA - GERALD D. YAHNKE, age 61 of Oskaloosa and former Davis County resident died May 20, 2007 at the Davis County Hospital in Bloomfield. He was born icon January 17, 1946 in Ottumwa, Iowa to Howard E. and Ollie B. Prevo Yahnke. He served in the United States Army. He worked at Pella Corp in Pella, Iowa. He was a member of Faith Evangelical Methodist Church in Oskaloosa and the Fraternal Order of the Eagles Aerie #276 in Oskaloosa.

He is survived by his mother Ollie Yahnke of Bloomfield; a brother Harold (Linda) Yahnke of Bloomfield; 2 nephews David (Shari) and Alan (Melissa) Yahnke both of Bloomfield; a great nephew; 6 great nieces and a great great nephew.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Graveside services will be at 10:00 am Thursday May 24, 2007 at the Rouch Cemetery in Davis County, Iowa with Pastor Dave Brown officiating. Visitation will begin at 9:00 am Wednesday at the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield, with the family present from 7:00-8:30 pm. A memorial has been established to his church.

EDWIN C. MILLER

ELDON - EDWIN C. MILLER, age 60 of Eldon and former Bloomfield resident died May 5, 2007 at his home. He was born icon August 12, 1946 in Lenox, Iowa to Raymond D. and Edith Nixon Miller. He graduated from Northwest Missouri State University in 1968 and later earned a Masters Degree in English. He married icon April Smith August 11, 1968 in Maryville, Missouri. He taught high school at South Page Community Schools for 10 years and Davis County Community Schools in Bloomfield for 22 years. He was active with the ISEA, contest speech and the Bloomfield Public Library. He loved gardening and reading.

He is survived by a son Jason Miller of Floris, Iowa; 4 grandchildren Jonny Jackson, Bradie, Michael and Sonja Miller all of Davis County, Iowa; 3 brothers Donald Miller of Durant, Iowa and Allen and Harlan Miller both of Lenox, Iowa and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and 2 brothers Dickie and Gail Miller.

The body has been cremated. The family will meet with friends Saturday May 12, 2007 from 1:00-4:00 pm at the American Legion in Bloomfield. Memorials have been established to his family or the Friends of the Bloomfield Public Library and may be sent to Jason Miller 15746 Velvet Ave. Floris, IA 52560. Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield is assisting the family.

VIRGIL W. ARMSTRONG

BLOOMFIELD - VIRGIL W. ARMSTRONG, age 73 of Bloomfield died May 20, 2007 at the Davis County Hospital Long Term Care in Bloomfield. He was born icon July 22, 1933 in Davis County, Iowa to Cecil and Leona Irene Bacus Armstrong. He married icon Garnet Ritz June 26, 1959 in Bloomfield. He worked at the Bloomfield Foundry and Bimco, retiring in 1998. He was affiliated with the Midway Calvary Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife; a son Rodney Armstrong of Ottumwa, Iowa; 2 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; a sister Virginia Albertson of Ottumwa, Iowa and 2 brothers Charles Armstrong of Bloomfield, Iowa and James Armstrong of Ottumwa, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Graveside services will be at 10:00 am Wednesday May 23, 2007 at the Floris Cemetery in Floris, Iowa with Rev. Harold Baker officiating. Open visitation will be from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm Tuesday at the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield. A memorial in lieu of flowers has been established to the Midway Calvary Baptist Church for the choir or Junior Church.

Dr. Henry M. Perry

Bloomfield - Dr. Henry M. Perry, 85 of Bloomfield, Iowa, died May 15, 2007 at the Long Term Care Facility at the Davis County Hospital in Bloomfield, Iowa. He was born icon December 28, 1921 in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania to John E. and Regina Miller Perry.

He graduated from Ithaca, New York High School in 1940 and Franklin and Marshall College of Lancaster, Pennsylvania in 1944. Dr. Perry served in the United States Army during WW II from 1943 to 1946. He graduated from Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1949. Upon completing his internship and gastroenterology residency at the Robert Packer Hospital-Guthrie Clinic in Sayre, Pennsylvania; he joined the staff from 1952-1962. He married icon Elaine Hazelton January 5, 1957 in Greentown, Pennsylvania.

Dr. Perry joined the Gilfillan Clinic in Bloomfield, Iowa in 1963 and practiced internal medicine and gastroenterology at the Davis County Hospital and St. Joseph Hospital in Ottumwa, Iowa. He retired from his medical practice in 1990.

He was a member of the Bloomfield United Methodist Church, the Iowa Medical Society and the Davis County Medical Society. He was a member of the Davis County Fine Arts Council, Rotary Club and a strong supporter of Davis County Dollars for Scholars. In 1998 he received the Silver Beaver Award from the Boy Scouts. He was a thirty-second degree Mason and 50 year member of the Rural Amity Lodge #0070 in Athens, Pennsylvania.

Throughout his entire life, Dr. Perry was an avid student of World History and the Civil War and enjoyed photography as a hobby.

Surviving are his wife, one son Richard (Anne) Perry of Peach Tree City, Georgia; 3 daughters, Virginia (Gary) Russell, Lisa (Ray Cook) Wilcox both of Bloomfield and Jacqueline Perry of Moline, Illinois; four grandchildren, Dustin (Jessica) Umphress, Clayton Wilcox, Rachel and Catherine Perry. Three step-grandchildren, Bill, Joey and Amy Russell, three great grandchildren and his mother in law Anna London of Bloomfield, Iowa.

He is preceded in death by his parents and a brother John E. Perry.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday May 19, 2007 at the Bloomfield United Methodist Church with Pastor Kevin Gingerich officiating. Burial will be at the Bloomfield South Cemetery in Bloomfield, Iowa. Visitation will begin after 9:00 a.m. Friday with Masonic services at 6:00 p.m. followed by family visitation until 8:00 p.m. at the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield, Iowa.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to the Boy Scout Troop #91 in Bloomfield.
