Evelyn D. Pitman
(September 20, 1919 - February 15, 2012)

Evelyn D. Pitman, 92, of Montezuma died Wednesday, February 15, 2012 at the Montezuma Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Funeral services will begin at 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, February 18, 2012 at the Holland Coble Funeral Home in Montezuma. Visitation will begin at noon on Friday, February 17, 2012 at the Holland Coble Funeral Home with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M.

Evelyn was born icon on September 20, 1919 to Scott and Emma (Moyer) Dee. She graduated from Barnes City High School in 1937. She married icon Rex Pitman on August 12, 1942 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. She and Rex lived in several places including Louisiana and California while Rex was in the Air Force. Following WW II, they moved to a family farm east of Montezuma in 1947. They began farming and Evelyn was a homemaker and later worked at the Montezuma Schools as a cook for several years. To this union four children were born.

Evelyn was very active and enjoyed her time as a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, the VFW Auxiliary, the Montezuma Presbyterian Church, UPW, and the Willing Workers Club. She served as a board member of Diamond Life and loved to bowl and attend the 17th Bombers Group reunion each year. She also enjoyed many fishing trips to Minnesota with her family, bird watching and gardening. She was a true farmer's wife and loved farm life and all it had to offer.

Evelyn is survived by her children: Rex Pitman II of Kansas City, Missouri, Robert (JoAnn) Pitman of Florence, Montana, Sandra (Charlie) Fry of Barnes City, Iowa and Joe (Deb) Pitman of Montezuma, Iowa. She is also survived by six grandchildren; Michael Fry, Christopher Fry, CJ Fry, Shaun Pitman, Scott Pitman and Evelyn Pitman, three great grandchildren and her sister Helen (Bill) Silvers of Salt Lake City, Utah.

Evelyn is preceded in death by her husband Rex, her brother Robert Dee and her sister Phyllis Van deWalle.

Larry Keith Sanders
(May 20, 1943 - February 16, 2012)

Larry Sanders, 68, of Montezuma passed away Thursday, February 16, 2012. Funeral services will begin at 10:00 A.M. Monday, February 20, 2012 at the Holland Coble Funeral Home in Montezuma. Visitation will begin at 2:00 P.M. on Sunday with the family present from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M. Burial will be in the Jackson Township Cemetery at Montezuma. Memorial contributions may be made to the Faith Christian Center or Safe Haven of Iowa County.

Larry Keith Sanders, son of Lyle Keith Sanders and Edith Arlene Vail, was born icon May 20, 1943 in Sioux City, Iowa. He graduated from the Montezuma High School in 1962 before joining the Army Iowa National Guard in 1964. Larry was honorably discharged from his guard duty in 1970. On June 6, 1965 he was united in marriage to Linda Carter at the Millersburg Methodist Church. Larry joined his father's farming operation in 1965 as well as working in various factories and Lage Mfg. He continued his family's farming heritage until his health began to fail in the mid 90's. Larry enjoyed square dancing, wood working and motorcycling. He served on the Poweshiek County Extension Council and was a member of Faith Christian Center, Iowa Pork Producers and the Christian Motorcyclist Association.

Larry is preceded in death by his father Lyle Sanders and three infant siblings: Anna Marie, Etta Louise and Raymond James Sanders.

He is survived by his mother Arlene Sanders of Grinnell, his devoted wife Linda Sanders; his children: Loren (Renee) Sanders and Stacy (Doug) Helm all of Montezuma; mother-in-law, Jean Carter of Williamsburg; three brother-in-laws, Mike (Linda) Carter , Cliff (Mary) Carter both of Williamsburg, Ray (Michelle) Carter of Deep River; a sister-in-law, Jill (Dan) Smothers of North English. Larry's life was also blessed with four grandchildren: Morgan Sanders, Dillon Sanders, Shane Helm and Shelby Helm.

Stanley Lee Hibler
(August 25, 1933 - February 24, 2012)

Stanley Hibler, 78 of New Sharon passed away Friday, February 24, 2012 at the Pella Regional Health Center in Pella. Funeral services will begin at 10:30 am Tuesday, February 28, 2012 at the Union Mills Christian Church with Pastor Kerry Lake officiating. Visitation will be held from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm Sunday, February 26, 2012 at the Union Mills Christian Church. Interment will be held in the Union Mills Cemetery at Union Mills. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Union Mills Christian Church, the American Cancer Society or Pella Hospice.

Stanley Lee Hibler, son of Harold and Lula (Stem) Hibler, was born icon on August 25, 1933 in Iowa City, Iowa. He was a 1953 graduate of Fremont High School. On June 16, 1957, Stanley was united in marriage to Donna Alexander in Oskaloosa, Iowa. To this union three children were born, Allan, Terri and Tony. Stanley worked various jobs before he began driving truck and farming in the early sixties. He was very mechanically minded and did most of his own repair work. He enjoyed working with machinery. Stanley was very proud of being one of the first to buy a diesel tractor. He also enjoyed fishing, playing cards, square dancing, and roller skating and watching his grandchildren’s activities. He was a member of the Union Mills Christian Church and also belonged to a neighborhood card club.

His memory will be cherished by his wife of 54 years, Donna; his three children, Allan Hibler, Tony (Mary Jo) Hibler and Terri (Matt) Readshaw; seven grandchildren, Kristan Hibler (Shane Luckett), Megan Hibler (Scott Van Wyk), Paige (Zac) Moorman, Cassie Hibler, A.J. Hibler, Colton Moore and Dakota Readshaw and two step great-grandchildren, Reese Van Wyk and Teia Luckette.

Stanley was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Wesley Hibler.

Robert Peter Wiese
(May 19, 1926 - February 26, 2012)

Robert Peter Wiese died Sunday, February 26, 2012 at the age of 85 at his home in Newton, Iowa. Funeral services will begin at 10:30 am Wednesday, February 29, 2012 at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Newton. The Reverend John Moore will officiate. Burial will follow the service at Newton Memorial Cemetery in Newton, with a reception at the church afterwards. A visitation with the family will be held at the church on Tuesday, February 28, 2012 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Bob was born icon in Round Lake, Minn., on May 19, 1926 to Peter and Lela (Bell) Wiese and grew up in a farming community of family and friends. He graduated from high school in Brewster, Minn., and in 1950, enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserve Corps. during the Korean War. He served as a Corporeal, working in a motor pool in France from October 1950 to October 1952. Bob married icon Darlene Elsie Zierke on June 21, 1953 in Worthington, Minn., where he worked for Graff Motor Supply. He went to work for Sather Cookie Company in Round Lake, Minn., as a truck driver in 1956, and then went into sales for the company, moving his family to Newton, Iowa in 1963. He finished his career at Des Moines Brokerage, where he was an award-winning salesman from 1969 to 1991. Bob always appreciated a good sales pitch. His early years on the farm were the source of many fond memories and a host of stories. After retiring, he and Darlene revisited those memories at thresher’s and steam engine reunions and festivals. He also took up ham radio operation, and he and Darlene hit the road with a fifth wheel camper, spending winters in Arizona for a number of years. Bob maintained close ties with his extended family in Minnesota. One of his favorite things was to go fishing with his brother Harold. He enjoyed spending time outdoors and family vacations invariably included camping. He had a beautiful singing voice, planted and tended a vegetable garden wherever he lived and never met a dog he didn’t like.

He is survived by his wife, Darlene, five siblings — Gladys Weibel, Adelia (and Russell) Hawkinson, Luella Karstans, Linda Warden and Alice Kansanback — sister-in law Doris Wiese, and six children and their spouses: Janice and Jim Fales of New Franklin, Mo.; Steve and Norma Wiese of Sioux Falls, S.D.; Jim and Valerie Wiese of Ankeny, Ia.; Barb and Jeff Hill of Kansas City, Mo.; Brad and Terry Wiese of Omaha, Neb.; and Shelly and Marvin Smith of Columbia, Mo. He also leaves behind 16 grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Clarence and Harold Wiese.

Memorials may be made to the Jasper County Animal Rescue & Humane Society in care of Holland-Coble Funeral Home.

Kevin Donald Erquist
(May 14, 1958 - February 27, 2012)

Kevin Erquist, 53 of Waterloo passed away Monday, February 27, 2012 at the Harmony House Care Center in Waterloo. Memorial services will begin at 10:30 am Saturday, March 3, 2012 at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home in Montezuma. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Inurnment will be held in the Jackson Township Cemetery in Montezuma. Memorials may be directed to the Harmony House Activities Fund.

Kevin Donald Erquist, son of Donald and Barbara (Peterson) Erquist was born icon on May 14, 1958 in Des Moines, Iowa. He was a 1976 graduate of Montezuma High School. A year following his graduation, he was in a terrible car accident causing him to become a paraplegic. Kevin was residing in the Harmony House Care Center in Waterloo for the last 28 years. He absolutely loved living there and he enjoyed the people that worked there and cared for him. He enjoyed music, Cribbage, spending time at Camp Courageous, the Green Bay Packers and his coffee club.

He is survived by his mother, Barb Erquist of Grinnell; his sister, Ann (John) McAteer of Gilman; his niece Kaitlyn McAteer of Gilman and all of the people that cared for him at the Harmony House Care Center.

Kevin was preceded in death by his father, Don Erquist.

Clara Maria Sophia Ranfeld
(September 30, 1916 - February 28, 2012)

Clara Ranfeld, 95 of Montezuma passed away Tuesday, February 28, 2012 at Grinnell Regional Medical Center in Grinnell. Funeral services will begin at 10:00 A.M. Friday, March 2, 2012 at the Calvary Lutheran Church in Deep River, Iowa. Visitation will begin at noon on with the family present from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M. at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home in Montezuma. Burial will be in the Jackson Township Cemetery at Montezuma. Memorials may be directed to the Calvary Lutheran Church in Deep River, Iowa.

Clara Maria Sophia Ranfeld, 95, daughter of John and Anna (Sticht) Schlesselman, was born icon on September 30, 1916 in Lincoln Township, near Victor, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church, rural Victor. She was a charter member of the Calvary Lutheran Church in Deep River. In 1935, she was married icon to Cloyd Johnston. To this union one son was born, Harvey Johnston. On January 17, 1946 she was married icon to Mern Ranfeld. They farmed near Deep River and Montezuma until his death in 1987. She belonged to the LWML Ladies Aid, Busy Bees and Pleasant Ridge Clubs and enjoyed gardening, sewing, doll making and spending time with her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two husbands, Cloyd Johhnston and Mern Ranfeld, her sons Harvey Johnston and Larry Ranfeld, her daughter-in-law Mabel Muck, her brothers; Martin, Albert, Walter and Raymond Schlesselman.

She is survived by her children: Inez (Don) Scott of Brooklyn, Merna (Douglas) Duffus of Grinnell, Sylvia (Marvin) Waline of Brookyn, Glenn and Donna (Ranfeld) Ratcliff of Newton, Melvin (Mary) Ranfeld of Deep River and Randy (Mary) Ranfeld of Montezuma; twelve grandchildren: Rick (Julie) Scott of Audubon, Randy (Kay) Scott of Tucson, AZ, Julie (Matt) Ryan of Marengo, Kathy (Dustin) Langreck of Blairstown, Jane Waline of Victor, (friend Mark Westphal of Millersburg), Karen (Michael Turczak) Buhr of Council Bluffs, Mark (Tammy) Ranfeld of Carlisle, Craig (Candace) Ranfeld of Grimes, Cheri (Doug Hayes) Ranfeld of Des Moines, Alicia (Eric) Hasley of Grinnell, Dianna (Jason) Bryan of Jefferson and Rachel Ranfeld (friend Tommy Posey) of Montezuma; fifteen great-grandchildren: Megan and Ryan Scott, Logan and Hayden Scott, Amanda, Max and Colette Franks, Luke, Grace and Hannah Ryan, Emily Waline, Noah Buhr, Raegan Ranfeld, Miguel Ranfeld, Ethan Hasley, and many friends and relatives.

Sheryl Lynn Applegate
(January 22, 1960 - February 27, 2012)

Sheryl Applegate, 52, of New Sharon passed away Monday morning, February 27, 2012 at the Mahaska Health Partnership Hospice Services Serenity House in Oskaloosa after a courageous battle with cancer. As was her wish, her body has been cremated and private interment of her ashes will be held at a later date at Friends Cemetery in New Sharon. Holland – Coble Funeral Homes entrusted with the arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to MHP Serenity House.

Sheryl Lynn Applegate, daughter of Larry and Linda Small Applegate, was born icon January 22, 1960 in Oskaloosa, Iowa. Sheryl was a 1978 graduate of North Mahaska High School. Following her education, Sheryl worked for Younkers Department Store in Des Moines for two years; there she worked as a bookkeeper and a hand model, modeling jewelry. She was then employed at Stonehenge Supper Club as a bartender for several years. She subsequently purchased and operated the Cellar – Peanut Pub and later worked as a legal secretary for Brice and Smith Law Offices. Her final employment was with Wal-Mart, until her health required she retire in 2006. Sheryl enjoyed making jewelry and counted cross stitch.

Sheryl’s family includes a son and daughter-in-law, Ben and Jessi Thompson of West Des Moines; grandsons: Dylan and Owen and her parents, Larry and Linda Applegate of New Sharon.

Lori Lynn Hazen
(April 15, 1966 - January 8, 2012)

Lori Hazen, 45, of What Cheer, died Sunday, January 8, 2012. Funeral services will begin at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, January 13, 2012 at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home formerly the Harden Funeral Home in What Cheer. Visitation will begin at noon on Thursday; family present from 6 to 8 P.M. Burial will be in the Humes Cemetery near What Cheer. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the family.

Lori Lynn Hazen was born icon April 15, 1966 in Sigourney, Iowa the daughter of Bobby and Carol Craff Hazen. She attended Tri-County High School and later worked as a security guard in Memphis, Tennessee as well as a manager of a lingerie store. Lori also worked several modeling opportunities over the years. She enjoyed fishing, bowling, her cat and spending time with her family.

Lori is survived by her mother Carol Hazen of What Cheer; her father Bobby Hazen and wife Deanna Shull of Apache Junction, AZ; her maternal grandparents, Wanda Kahl of Sigourney and Glen Kahl of Glenwood; a son Nick Hazen of Williamsburg; two daughters, Natalie Kinkead and friend Aric of Cameron, MO and Destiny Bruggeman of Dubuque; her sister and best friend Lisa Hazen of Delta; friend and companion Joe Bower of Sigourney; a grandson Gage Hazen and her loving cat, Madam Blue.

She is preceded in death by her grandparents Dee and Violet Hazen and a brother Todd Hazen.

Floyd Little
(Died January 3, 2012)

Floyd Little, 87 of Montezuma passed away Tuesday, January 3, 2012 at the Grinnell Regional Medical Center in Grinnell. Funeral services will begin at 10:30 am Saturday, January 7, 2012 at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home in Montezuma. Visitation will begin after 11:00 am Friday, January 6, 2012 at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home with the family present from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Interment will be held in the Jackson Township Cemetery in Montezuma. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Grinnell Regional Medical Center.

Floyd Junior Little, the first of five children, was born icon on January 19, 1924 to John Russell and Helen Marie (Bates) Little near Delta. He received his education in rural schools in the area and finally in Gibson. On June 4, 1946, Floyd was united in marriage to Marjorie Tarvin at the First Presbyterian Church in Montezuma. To this union three daughters were born, Kathleen, Carol and Eleanor. They began their married icon life on a farm near Gibson, then near Ewart and finally near Montezuma. Floyd loved the farm and especially his livestock. His home and his family was very dear to his heart. Floyd had a special way with young people. He always made farm chores and haymaking a time of fun together. Floyd truly enjoyed helping others and lending a hand when ever needed.

His memory is honored by his wife of 65 years, Marjorie; a daughter, Kathleen (Derold) Meyer and her family: Doug (Angie) Meyer, Caleb, Dustin and Courtney; Laurie (Matt) Novotny and Nathan; Stephanie Meyer; and Melissa (Michael) Ryan: Avery, Jasmine, Collin, Cora and Titus; a daughter, Carol Simmons and family: Randy (Cedar Rohrer) Simmons and Amy (Tammy Brain) Simmons and Tegan; a daughter, Eleanor (Alan) Robinson and family: Andy (Falicia) Robinson: Damen and Treyton; a brother, Robert Little; a sister, Ada Buckmaster and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Floyd was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Gerald and Dwayne.
