I. O. Weede

BLOOMFIELD - I. O. Weede, 84, of rural Bloomfield, Iowa died June 18, 2008. He was born icon March 20, 1924 to Oda R. and Martha S. Francis Weede. He married icon Christine Baker January 13, 1945 in Bloomfield. A lifetime resident of Davis County he was a farmer and a member of the Stiles Christian Church. He had served as an Elder of his church for several years. I.O. Weede will be remembered for his devotion to God, his family, and friends. He loved gardening. He was known for his sense of humor, his smile, and helping others.

He is survived by his wife; 3 daughters, Kathy (Gene) Proctor of Keokuk, Iowa, Diana Jones of LeRoy, Illinois, Jane (J.) Cook of Jacksonville, Illinois; 8 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Lucille Christy of Mountain Home, Arkansas.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son-in-law, Gary Jones; and 2 brothers, Lowell and Dean Weede.

Funeral Services will be at 10:30 am on Monday, June 23, 2008 at the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield, Iowa with Matt Proctor, J. Cook, and Kramer Smith officiating. Burial will be in the Inskeep Cemetery in Davis County, Iowa. Visitation will begin after 9:00 am on Sunday with the family present to greet friends from 3-5 pm at the funeral home. Memorials have been established to Central Christian College in Moberly, Missouri and to Ozark Christian College in Joplin, Missouri.

Sharon Kay Wheaton

BLOOMFIELD - Sharon Kay Wheaton, 64, of Bloomfield, Iowa died June 21, 2008 at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa. She was born icon September 28, 1943 in Pulaski, Iowa to Floyd and Leola Hendricks Miller. She married icon Larry Weller October 17, 1964 in Des Moines, Iowa. He preceded her in death December 2, 1988. She later married icon Everett “Buck” Wheaton in May 1993 in Pulaski, Iowa. She was a cook and an aide at the Bloomfield Care Center.

She is survived by 2 daughters, Dee (Skip) Johnson, Kathi (Craig) Scott, both of Bloomfield, Iowa; a son, Mikel Weller of Bloomfield; a step-daughter, Rose Wheaton of Bloomfield; 6 grandchildren; 1 great-grandson; and a sister, Pat Hecker of Warrensburg, Missouri.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and 2 brothers, Bill and Jerry Miller.

A celebration of life will be on Friday, June 27 at 7pm at the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield, Iowa with Rhonda Eakins officiating. The family will be at the funeral home from 6pm until the time of the service to greet friends. A memorial has been established to the Bloomfield Main Street Christmas Light Fund.

Jarold “Jerry” Leon Fleming

DRAKESVILLE - Jarold “Jerry” Leon Fleming, 71, of White, Georgia, passed away Sunday, January 6, 2008 at the Cartersville Medical Center in Cartersville Georgia, surrounded by his loving family. Born September 11, 1936 in Centerville, Iowa, he was the son of the late Harold and Lila Herteen Fleming, and was a graduate of Mt. Union High School, in Mt. Union, Iowa. Jerry was a retired master plumber and pipe fitter, and was a veteran of the United States Navy. He loved hunting, fishing, and shrimping while living in Florida. Jerry was also an avid history buff.

Survivors include his daughters and son-in-law, Marcia Fleming of Grimes, Iowa and Glenda (David) Gonzales of Manchester, Tennessee; his siblings and their spouses, Charlene (Clifford) Pepper of Batavia, Iowa, Dwayne (Connie) Fleming of Ankeny, Iowa, Diane (Mike) Quince of Phoenix, Arizona, and Roger (Judy) Fleming of Palm Bay Florida; his grandchildren, Ashley Bailey and Jennifer Bailey; his great-grandson, Gage Thompson; and his former wife Ella Juanita Anderson Fleming.

A service to celebrate the life of Jarold Fleming will be held at 10:30 am on Saturday, June 28, 2008 at the Bloomfield Christian Church in Bloomfield, Iowa with Rev. James Wakelin officiating. Burial of the cremains will be in the Drakesville Cemetery in Drakesville, Iowa. Visitation will begin at 9 am until the time of the service at the church. A memorial has been established to the Bloomfield Christian Church Scholarship and may be mailed to: Bloomfield Christian Church, 107 N. Davis St, Bloomfield, Iowa 52537.

David C. Hughes

OTTUMWA - David C. Hughes, 88, of Ottumwa, Iowa died July 5, 2008 at the Ridgewood Care Center in Ottumwa. He was born icon February 18, 1920 in Bunch, Iowa to Jay A. and Hazel I. Glassburner Hughes. He married icon Illa Fae Hawkins on October 3, 1943 in Memphis, Missouri. She preceded him in death August 2, 1998. He was an electrician for Robertson Electric in Ottumwa. He was a member of the Dunnville Baptist Church in Bloomfield, Iowa and enjoyed music, teaching children how to square dance, gardening and was a member of the B Squares Dance Club. He served in the United States Army during World War II.

He is survived by 3 sister-in-laws, Judy Morse of Bloomfield, Iowa, Edith Smith of Ottumwa, Iowa, Sandy Hughes of Lake Charles, Louisiana; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; 2 sisters, Zella Thompson, Elva D. Cole; 2 brothers, Donald and Doran Hughes; and a companion, Violet Chapman.

Graveside services will be at 11:00am Tuesday, July 8, 2008 at the IOOF Cemetery in Bloomfield, Iowa with Pastor Marvin Martin officiating. Visitation will begin after 9am on Tuesday at the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield with the family present to greet friends from 10:00 am until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established to the Dunnville Baptist Church Educational Camp for Children and Hospice Inc.

Dean “Bogie” Bales

OTTUMWA - Dean “Bogie” Bales, 75 of Ottumwa, Iowa and former resident of Floris, Iowa died July 20, 2008 at the Hospice House in Ottumwa. He was born icon January 8, 1933 in Floris, Iowa to Delphin B. and Marita Hawkins Bales. He was a member of the Horse-N-Around Saddle Club and the O.B. Nelson Post #3 of the American Legion in Ottumwa. He was a farmer and served in the United States Army during the Korean War.

He is survived by 3 daughters, Rachel Pettit of Bloomfield, Iowa, Phyllis Buseman of Ottumwa, Laurie Hopkins of Floris; a son, Russell Bales of Floris; a stepdaughter, Sue Slycord of Ottumwa; 3 grandchildren, Darrell Roberts Jr., Deana Horney, Melissa Weeks; 2 great-granddaughters; 4 step-grandsons; 13 step-great-grandchildren; a sister, Martha Clark of Bloomfield; 4 brothers, Carl Bales of Bloomfield, William Bales of Richland, Iowa, Robert Bales of Pahrump, Nevada, Larry Bales of Riverside, California; and Margie White of Ottumwa.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Bruce Bales; and a step-great-grandson, Jordan Johnson.

Funeral services will be at 10am on Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield, Iowa with Pastor Kevin Gingerich officiating. Burial with military rites performed by Reed Whisler Post #78 of the American Legion in Bloomfield will be in the Floris Cemetery in Floris, Iowa. Visitation will begin after 9am on Tuesday with the family present to greet friends from 6-8pm at the funeral home. Memorials have been established to Hospice Inc. and his family.

VERNA DE VRIES

PELLA — Verna De Vries, 86, of Hull, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2007.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Oct. 30, at 2 p.m. in the First Christian Reformed Church in Pella. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery in Pella. Visitation will be Monday, Oct. 29, beginning at 6 p.m. at the Garden Chapel Funeral Home; family will be present from 7 to 8 p.m. Garden Chapel Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

MARGARET STEENHOEK

PELLA — Margaret (Vander Linden) Steenhoek, 88, of Pella, passed away Thursday morning in the Long Term Care Unit at the Pella Regional Health Center.

Funeral services will be held Monday, Oct. 29, at 10:30 a.m. in the Third Church Chapel in Pella. Interment will follow in the Oakwood Cemetery in Pella. Visitation will be all day Sunday at Van Dyk-Duven Funeral Home; the family will be present from 5 to 7 p.m. Memorials may be given for the Third Church Building Fund or the Hospice of Pella. Van Dyk-Duven Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

NELLIE LEWIS

ALBIA — Nellie (Bay) Lewis, 94, of Albia, died Thursday, Oct. 25, 2007, at the Monroe County Hospital in extended care in Albia.

Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 28, at the Winfield Funeral Home. Family will be present Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m. and Sunday from 5 to 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held Monday, Oct. 29, at 11 a.m. at First Christian Church in Albia, with the Rev. Lynda Carlson officiating. Interment services will be held prior to the memorial service at 10 a.m. at Oak View Cemetery in Albia. Memorials have been established to the First Christian Church.

CARLETON POWERS

OSKALOOSA — Carleton E. “Carty” Powers, 66, of Oskaloosa, died Thursday night, Oct. 25, 2007, at the Comfort House in Pella.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Oct. 30, at 10:30 a.m. in the Central United Methodist Church in Oskaloosa with the Rev. Robert Dean officiating. Burial will be in the Forest Cemetery, Oskaloosa, with graveside military rites given by members of the Oskaloosa D.A.V., VFW and American Legion. Visitation will begin at the Bates Funeral Chapel on Monday after 10 a.m.; the family will be at the funeral chapel from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. to greet friends and relatives. There will be a Masonic Memorial Service Monday at 6 p.m. at the funeral chapel. Memorials in lieu of flowers may be directed to Central United Methodist Church or to the Isaac Walton League.

RICHARD PROVENZANO

PERSHING — Richard Paul Provenzano, 63, of Pershing, passed away on Oct. 26, 2007, at the Hospice Comfort House in Pella.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Oct. 30, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Knoxville with the Rev. Joel Picard officiating. Interment was in Zion Cemetery in Pershing. Memorials may be made to Hospice Comfort House in Pella. Condolence messages may be sent to the family at www.williamsfhknoxville.com. Williams Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

GAIL PARKER

NEW SHARON — Gail L. Parker, 89, of New Sharon and formerly of Bussey, passed away Oct. 28, 2007, at the New Sharon Nursing and Rehab Center, where she had been a resident for the last eight and one-half years.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 2, at Bussey United Methodist Church with Pastor Shannon Munday of the Platte Valley Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in Pringle Cemetery near Bussey. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Friday at the Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel; the family will be at the funeral chapel from 6 to 8 p.m. to greet visitors. Memorials may be made to the Gideons.

CAREY SMITH

OSKALOOSA — Carey E. “Ike” Smith, 82, of Cambridge, formerly of Oskaloosa, died Monday, Oct. 2007, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Knoxville.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Nov. 3, at 10 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Pastor Alvern Boetsma officiating. Burial will be in the Friends Cemetery at Oskaloosa, with graveside military rites given by members of the Oskaloosa VFW, D.A.V. and American Legion. Visitation will begin Friday after 10 a.m., and the family will be present Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. to celebrate his life, and greet friends and relatives.

The family extends thanks to the United States Veterans Administration Medical Centers of Des Moines and Knoxville for their loving care, and of Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

GAIL PARKER

NEW SHARON — Gail L. Parker, 89, of New Sharon and formerly of Bussey, passed away Oct. 28, 2007, at the New Sharon Nursing and Rehab Center.

ROBERT STANLEY

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Robert “Bob” Evan Stanley Sr. passed away peacefully in his home on Oct. 29, 2007, surrounded by his loving family.

A memorial service will be held Friday, Nov. 2, at 3 p.m. at Sawyer-George Funeral Home Chapel in Corpus Christi. In lieu of flowers, there is a memorial set up in his name at Christus Spohn Cancer Center, 1415 Santa Fe St., Corpus Christi, Texas 78404. The family invites you to join us for lunch at noon, prior to services, at St. John Lutheran Church, 3316 Hummingbird Lane, Robstown, Texas 78380.
