Rebecca Lynne Stanley
(May 2, 1946 - September 29, 2011)

Rebecca Stanley, 65 of What Cheer died Thursday, September 29, 2011 at the Serenity House in Oskaloosa. A celebration of life gathering will be held on Saturday, October 8, 2011 at the Harden Funeral Chapel in What Cheer from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Hope Lodge in Iowa City.

Rebecca Lynne Stanley the daughter of Walter and Ida Marie Wymore Casady was born icon May 2, 1946 in Williamsburg, Iowa. She was a 1964 graduate of the English Valley High School. Rebecca loved attending live concerts with her daughter Elaine. She also enjoyed working at Teet & Tobe’s restaurant in Keswick for the past twenty plus years. Above all Rebecca enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and visiting with her neighbors.

She is preceded in death by parents.

Rebecca is survived by two daughters, Sheila (Bruce) of Waukee and Elaine Stanley of Pella; two sons, James (Linda) Stanley of Clarksville and Craig (Angela) Stanley of Oskaloosa; one brother, Joel Ned (Carol) Casady of Warsaw, IL. Rebecca also leaves behind seven grandchildren.

Linda Kay Giese
(November 15, 1949 - September 26, 2011)

Linda Giese, 61 of What Cheer, died Monday, September 26, 2011. Funeral services will begin at 10:00 A.M., Saturday, October 1, 2011 at the Harden Funeral Chapel in What Cheer. Interment will be held privately at a later date in the Malpine Cemetery near Muscatine. Visitation will begin at noon on Friday; family will be present from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. In lieu of flowers please direct memorial contributions to the family.

Linda Kay Giese, daughter of Kenneth and Florence Herline Swanson was born icon November 15, 1949 in Muscatine, Iowa. She was a 1969 graduate of the Muscatine High School. Linda married icon John E. Giese in 1971. She attended Beauty College in Davenport where she received her Associates Degree in Cosmetology. Linda also worked for Kingsberry Homes in Sigourney. She was an avid Hawkeye fan and she enjoyed camping, fishing and expanding her M&M memorabilia collection. She was proud to live in the small town of What Cheer. The community members brought joy and meaning to her life. Linda was compassionate and non judgmental. Helping friends and family through both good and bad times in life was important to her. Above all Linda was proud of her sons and what they have become.

She is survived by her parents Kenneth and Florence Swanson of Muscatine, her long time companion Richard Moode of What Cheer; two sons: Paul (Glenda) Giese of Carlisle and Terry Giese of Beacon; a sister Diana Edwards of Muscatine; an aunt Annabelle Duede of Davenport as well as several other aunts and uncles. Linda’s life was also blessed with six grandchildren: Kalie, Amber, Dakota and Ian Giese, Jessica (Shallom) Doty and Erica (Ryan) Groom. Five great grandchildren: Libby, Ryan and Aydan Groom, Sadie and Taylor Doty.

Linda is preceded in death by her grandparents and an aunt, Gladys Swanson.

William Leroy Harris
(May 29, 1929 - September 24, 2011)

U.S. Veteran
William Harris, 82 of What Cheer died Saturday, September 24, 2011 at the Mahaska County Hospital. A graveside funeral service will begin at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, September 28, 2011 at the McFarlan Cemetery at What Cheer. Family and friends will gather at the Harden Funeral Chapel at 10:30 AM Wednesday to form a procession to the cemetery. A luncheon will be provided by the family at the Hill Top Chapel in What Cheer following the service. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be directed to the family.

William Leroy Harris was born icon May 28, 1929 in New Sharon, Iowa the son of Leslie and Mary Fogle Harris McClune. On September 18, 1950 William was united in marriage to Joyce Padgett. Then in 1951 he joined the United States Army and served two years during the Korean War. William returned home and worked at What Cheer Clay products for sixteen years. He later worked for Amana Refrigeration and after twenty six years with the company William retired in 1991.

He is preceded in death by his parents, a brother Ronald Harris and an infant sister.

William is survived by his wife Joyce of What Cheer, a daughter Debra (John) Bookout of Altoona; and a sister Genevieve (Kenneth) Johnson of Ottumwa.

Ralph Eugene Helmick
(March 4, 1926 - August 28, 2011)

Ralph Helmick, 85 of Cedar Falls and formerly of What Cheer, died Sunday, August 28, 2011 at the Western Home Communities in Cedar Falls. Funeral services will begin at 10:00 AM on Friday, September 2, 2011 at the Harden Funeral Chapel in What Cheer. Burial will be in the Sixteen Cemetery near Thornburg. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the What Cheer Opera House. Ralph Eugene Helmick was born icon March 4, 1926 near Blakesburg, IA the son of Isaac and Opal Husted Helmick. He was a 1944 graduate of Bussey High School. Ralph then moved to Texas where he worked on an oil rig until 1950. That same year, he moved to Des Moines where he worked at Super Value. Ralph was united in marriage to Shirley Foster in 1953 at the Des Moines Iowa Central Christian Church. The couple later moved to Waterloo where Ralph worked for Clute’s Super Market and John Deere. In 1973 he retired, moving to What Cheer in 1974. Ralph relocated to Ottumwa in 2005 before settling at the Western Home Communities in Cedar Falls in 2009.

Over the years Ralph enjoyed performing at musical concerts held at the What Cheer Opera House. His music continued through playing the organ, guitar, and ring chimes at the Western Home. He also enjoyed chatting on his CB Radio, camping, and attending Blue Grass Festivals. Ralph was a member of the Christian Church, What Cheer Lions Club and the Waterloo Sportsman Club.

He is preceded in death by his wife, two brothers: Melvin and William Helmick; and four sisters: Lucille Moody, Flossie Smith, Dorothy Lorenz and Neva Matthews.

Ralph is survived by three sons, Victor (Donna) Helmick of Waterloo, David (Kelley) Helmick of Spring, TX, Douglas (Kim) Helmick of Fort Dodge; a daughter Angeleta (Mikeal) Smith of Hopkins, MN; and a sister Esther (Don) Dannels of Newton. He was also blessed with eight grandchildren.

ROBERT MASON

BLOOMFIELD — Robert T. Mason, 85, of Bloomfield, died Dec. 16, 2007, at the Davis County Hospital Long Term Care in Bloomfield.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 19, at the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield with Pastor Kevin Gingerich officiating. Military rites will be performed by Reed Whisler Post No. 78 of the American Legion in Bloomfield. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Tuesday with the family present from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Cremation will follow the service with interment at the Bellefountaine Cemetery in Tracy at a later date. Memorials have been established to the Davis County Hospital Long Term Care Activity Fund.

MARY E. HENDERSON

BLOOMFIELD - MARY E. HENDERSON, age 97 of Bloomfield died September 12, 2006 at the Bloomfield Care Center. She was born icon March 26, 1909 in Humboldt, Tennessee to William A. and Etta Jones Mosley. She married icon Earl E. Henderson March 17, 1952 in Carnith, Mississippi. He preceded her in death February 20, 1970. She was a homemaker and had been a resident of Davis County since 1977. She was a member of the Tabernacle Baptist Church in Bloomfield.

She is survived by a son Billy Joe Henderson of Des Moines, Iowa; a grandson Joseph Lee Forsythe of Bloomfield, Iowa; 2 granddaughters of Des Moines, Iowa and 2 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

Graveside services will be at 10:00 AM Friday September 15, 2006 at the Johnson Cemetery south of Monterey, Iowa in Davis County with Pastor Charles Jackson officiating. Visitation will begin at 2:00 PM Thursday at the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield with the family present from 6:00-7:00 PM.

PHYLLIS M. THOMAS

BLOOMFIELD - MRS. BILL THOMAS, SR. (PHYLLIS M. THOMAS), age 77 of rural Bloomfield went to be with the Lord after a courageous battle with cancer on September 11, 2006 at the Davis County Hospital in Bloomfield. She was born icon June 6, 1929 in Ottumwa, Iowa to Floyd Pearl and Ruby Audrey Dunning Roberts. She married icon William L. Thomas, Sr. November 1, 1947 in Ottumwa, Iowa. She was a 1947 graduate of Ottumwa High School. She was a homemaker and had lived in Bloomfield since 1959. She was a member of the Dunnville Baptist Church, the Davis County Genealogical Society, the Saved to Serve Ladies Group and had been a 4-H leader.

She is survived by her husband; a son Bill (Sharon) Thomas, Jr. of Bloomfield; a daughter Diana (Steve) Bartlett of Bloomfield; 4 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren and a sister Shirley Carr of Ottumwa.

She was preceded in death by her parents and an infant brother.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 AM Thursday September 14, 2006 at the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield with Pastor Marvin Martin officiating. Burial will be in the Fiedler Cemetery in Wapello County, Iowa. Visitation will begin at 9:00 AM Wednesday with the family present from 6:30-8:00 PM. A memorial has been established to the Dunnville Baptist Church.

WILLIAM METCALF

PULASKI - WILLIAM E. METCALF, age 81 of Pulaski, Iowa died September 9, 2006 at the Davis County Hospital in Bloomfield. He was born icon September 1, 1925 in Bloomington, Illinois to William Thomas and Estella Adell Yarder Metcalf. He married icon Ginger Shute May 13, 1952 in Chicago, Illinois. He served in the United States Navy during World War II. He was a farmer and had been a resident of Pulaski since 1968. He was a member of the Bloomfield United Methodist Church and the American Legion in Delavan, Illinois.

He is survived by his wife; 2 daughters Mary (Wayne) Rogers and Brenda Whisler both of Pulaski; a son Terry (Cindy) Metcalf of Fulton, Missouri; 8 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; 5 sisters Edith May of Bloomfield, Mary Jurgens of Naples, Florida, Betty Loveridge of Gilbert, Arizona, Beverly Groenewold of Delavan, Illinois and Callie Hauptli of Mesa, Arizona.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son Jerry Metcalf; a son-in-law Jay Whisler and 2 sisters Beatrice Lamie and Helen Hackney.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 AM Wednesday September 13, 2006 at the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield with Pastor Kevin Gingerich officiating. Burial with graveside military rites by Reed Whisler Post #78 of the American Legion in Bloomfield, will be in the Pulaski Cemetery in Pulaski, Iowa. Visitation will begin at 9:00 AM Tuesday with the family present from 6:00-8:00 PM. A memorial has been established to the Pulaski Fire Department.

CHARLES D. HARWARD

FLORIS - CHARLES D. HARWARD, age 78 of Floris, Iowa died September 9, 2006 at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa. He was born icon November 21, 1927 in Floris, Iowa to Ross and Jessie Gant Harward. He married icon Maxine Gilland June 11, 1949 in Ottumwa, Iowa. He served in the United States Army during World War II. He had been a resident of Floris his lifetime and had owned and operated the general store in Floris for several years. He worked for J.P. Strother Construction Company and was a retired rural mail carrier. He was a member of the Floris Christian Church and attended Living Hope Bible Church in Eldon. He was a member of Reed Whisler Post #78 of the American Legion in Bloomfield and was the first fire chief in Floris. He served on the Floris City Council for 16 years and was sexton of the Floris Cemetery for several years.

He is survived by his wife; 2 grandsons Michael (Erika) and Christopher (Deana) Harward both of Floris; daughter-in-law Dawn Rebecca Harward of Floris; 5 great grandchildren Gary, Kaitlyn, McKenna, Jordan and Bailey Harward and 2 sisters Alice Harward of Bloomfield and Olive Wilbraham of Dallas, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son Steven Harward and 3 brothers Maurice “Buck”, James and Wendel Harward.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 AM Tuesday September 12, 2006 at the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield with Pastor David Albert officiating. Burial with graveside military rites by Reed Whisler Post #78 of the American Legion in Bloomfield, will be in the Floris Cemetery in Floris, Iowa. Visitation will begin at 9:00 AM Monday with the family present from 6:00-7:30 PM. Memorials have been established to Living Hope Bible Church and the Floris Baptist Church.

CHARLES EDDIE HANCOCK

BLOOMFIELD - CHARLES EDDIE HANCOCK, age 84 of Bloomfield died September 13, 2006 at Hospice House in Ottuwma. He was born icon May 17, 1922 in Murphysboro, Illinois to Art and Ruth B. White Hancock and was raised by his grandparents George and Eulah White. He married icon Mary L. Jones June 7, 1947 in Lancaster, Missouri. He served in the United States Army during World War II. He lived most of his life in Davis and Appanoose County. He did body and fender work and also worked at John Deere. He was a member of the Bloomfield Christian Church, Reed Whisler Post #78 of the American Legion in Bloomfield, VFW and DAV.

He is survived by his wife; 2 daughters Shelia Ann (Steve) Armstrong of Marshalltown and Cindy (Dave) Eakins of Bloomfield; 4 grandchildren Lisa Zimmerman, Tammy Brown, Katie Eakins and Kevin Eakins; a great granddaughter Tana Jo Eakins and 4 step great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; 2 brothers killed in World War II Wayne and Roger Hancock and a great grandson.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 AM Saturday September 16, 2006 at the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield with Rev. James Wakelin officiating. Burial with graveside military rites by Reed Whisler Post #78 of the American Legion in Bloomfield, will be in the IOOF Cemetery in Bloomfield. Visitation will begin at 9:00 AM Friday with the family present from 6:00-7:30 PM. A memorial has been established to Hospice, Inc.

WILLIAM “WILLIE” DAVIS

MOULTON - WILLIAM “WILLIE” DAVIS, age 50 of Moulton, Iowa died September 19, 2006 at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa. He was born icon July 5, 1956 in Centerville, Iowa to Charles A. and Bonnie Kirby Davis. He graduated from Davis County High School in 1974 and later served in the United States Army. He had worked at Turner Concrete in Ottumwa for 10 years as a concrete finisher.

He is survived by a daughter Taylor Davis of Unionville, Iowa; his mother Bonnie Davis of Moulton, Iowa; 2 brothers Russell Davis of Centerville, Iowa and Louis Davis of Louisburg, Kansas; a sister Peggy Spaw of Des Moines, Iowa; a special friend Lori Grimm of Moulton, Iowa, several nieces and nephews and 4 great nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father; 2 brothers Gilbert and Scott Davis and a brother-in-law Joe Spaw.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 PM Sunday September 24, 2006 at the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield with Jerry Weller officiating. Burial will be in the Burgher Cemetery in Davis County, Iowa. Visitation will begin at 11:00 AM Saturday with the family present from 6:30-8:30 PM. A memorial in lieu of flowers has been established to his family.

TERRENCE “TERRY” MIXER

BLOOMFIELD - TERRENCE “TERRY” MIXER, age 52 of Fairfield and former Bloomfield resident died September 27, 2006 at the Jefferson County Hospital in Fairfield. He was born icon February 22, 1954 in Quincy, Illinois to Donald W. and Helen L. Sparks Mixer. He had been a resident of Fairfield since 1975 and worked at TENCO in Fairfield for several years. He was a member of the Bloomfield United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his parents Don and Helen Mixer of Bloomfield and a brother Dennis Mixer of Texas.

Graveside services will be at 10:00 AM Monday October 2, 2006 at the IOOF Cemetery in Bloomfield with Pastor Kevin Gingerich officiating. Visitation will begin at 9:00 AM Sunday at the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield with the family present from 2:00-3:00 PM. A memorial has been established to the Bloomfield United Methodist Church.
