WILBER McNEAR 73, of Mapleton passed away on Sunday, March 6, 2005, at Burgess Health Center in Onawa Iowa. Services: Friday, March 11, 2005 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Mapleton, with the Rev. Mark Duchaine officiating. Burial:in St. Mary's Cemetery, Mapleton. Wilbur was born icon on April 18, 1931, rural Anthon, Iowa, to George and Marvel (Howard) McNear. He graduated from Oto High School with the class of 1949. On September 4, 1961 Wilbur married icon Agnes Heisler at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Mapleton. Wilbur farmed with his father as well as owning and operating his own Sinclair Service Station in Oto and then Mapleton for over 50 years. He was active in the Mapleton Flying Club and had his own plane for several years. He was also a member of the Mapleton Community Club and Maple Valley Development. Wilbur was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He lived for going to work every day and visiting with all his friends. Survivors include his wife, Agnes; three sons, Kent and his wife Samantha of Ute, Lynn and his wife Tami of LeMars, Iowa and Mark and his wife Molly of Danbury, Iowa; Grandchildren Chris, Brittany, Alexandria, Taylor and Tyler; two brothers, Ronnie and his wife Barb of Fort Gibson, Oklahoma, and Gary and and his wife Susan of Fort Myers, Florida; and two sisters, Virginia and her husband Dale Hayworth of Correctionville, Iowa, and Betty Colesman of Aurora, Colorado. Wilber was preceded in death by his parents; one niece, Sheri Lou Hayworth; and one nephew, Todd Hayworth.

MARY ANN (GREEN) SCHINK 75, of League City, Texas, formerly of Oto, passed away on Saturday, February 26, 2005, at St. John's Hospital in Nassau Bay, Texas. Services: Wednesday March 9, 2005 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Oto with Monsignor Mark Duchaine officiating. Burial:St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, rural Oto. Mary Ann was born icon to Bert and Anna (Hawn) Green east of Oto, on June 2, 1929. Her parents both died when she was young and she was raised by her Grandma and Aunt. She attended and graduated from Oto High School in 1947. On January 17, 1948 she was united in marriage to Herman Schink. The couple traveled and lived all over the world while Herman was serving in the U.S. Air Force. He retired in 1975. Mary Ann worked as an accountant, office manager as well as a department store manager. She enjoyed gardening and collecting antiques. Survivors include her husband, Herman; three children; Gene, Greg, and Michelle O'Connell, six grandchildren; and three brothers, Don, Joe and Ken. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Chuck and Bert Jr.

LORETTA W. SPEER 91, of Anthon passed away on Sunday, February 13, 2005, at the Good Samaritan Center in Holstein, Iowa. Services: Wednesday, February 16, 2005 at the United Methodist Church in Anthon, with the Rev. Karl Harman officiating. Burial: in Oak Hill Cemetery, Anthon. Loretta was born icon in Anthon to George and Hattie (Rice) Yockey on January 10, 1914. She grew up in the Anthon area, graduating with the Anthon High School class of 1932. After graduation, she was a waitress for Mook's Cafe in Sioux City. On May 16, 1936 she was united in marriage to Lesley William Speer at Elk Point, South Dakota. The couple farmed together in the Kingsley, Iowa area. Loretta also worked at the Union Consolidated School as a cook and at Nafe Studio in LeMars, Iowa. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, crocheting, especially making afghans and doll dresses, playing cards, dancing and church activities, and gardening, with a special love for flowers. She loved to share her flowers with everyone. Her family was very important to her. While living in the Kingsley area, she was a member of Union Township Presbyterian Church, where she was active in the Ladies Aid Society. She served as an officer as well as being on many committees at the church. When Les and Loretta retired from farming they moved to Anthon. Loretta was a member of the United Methodist Church at Anthon and remained an active member until failing health. Survivors include two daughters and their husbands, Marllys and Rodney Brosamle and Judi and Arley Vondrak; grandchildren and spouses, Jeff and Mikell Brosamle and Joy and Duane Babcock; great-grandchildren, Chris, Emily and Matthew Brosamle and Danielle and Nicholas Babcock, all of Galva, Iowa; a sister-in-law, Marion Speer of Sioux Center, Iowa; and other family and friends. Loretta was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Les; a brother, Cecil; and three sisters, Bertha, Erma and Margaret.

MARGIE J. SCHMIDT 59, of Anthon passed away on Sunday, Feb. 6, 2005, at a Sioux City hospital after a long bout with lung disease, COPD and emphysema. Services: Wednesday February 9, 2005 at Armstrong Funeral Home in Anthon with Pastor Karen Handke officiating. Burial: Oak Hill Cemetery at Anthon. Margie Jane Peterson was born icon on October 4, 1945, to Clarence T. and Delta D. (Ehlers) Peterson at Storm Lake, Iowa. She married icon Darrell Schmidt March 31, 1995. She was previously married icon to Paul Durham on Feb. 3, 1962, and then married icon Don Paulsen in May 1972. Margie was a registered nurse at the Correctionville (Iowa) Nursing and Rehab Center until her disability forced her to retire. Survivors include her husband, Darrell; two sons, Dennis Paulsen and his wife, Lilly, of Des Moines and Don Paulsen of Ames, Iowa; two daughters and their husbands, Lana and Dave Comstock of Ames and Kimberly and Jay Rinker of Beaver, Iowa; seven grandchildren, Latasha, Zachary, and Damien Paulsen, Sarah and Justin Neely and Skyler and Caid Rinker; and two stepchildren and their spouses, Denice and Dallas Kohn and their children, Zachary, Allison and Stephanie of Washington, N.J., and Dennis and Suzanne Schmidt and their children, Justin and Adrianna of Boyden, Iowa. Margie was preceded in death by her parents and grandparents.

MARTIN KETELSEN, 61 of Smithland and formerly of Anthon was killed in an automobile accident Thursday, January 27, 2005 south of Anthon. Services: Monday January 31, 2005 at the United Church of Christ, in Oto.

VINCENT J. O'CONNELL, 85 of Oto passed away on Monday, January 24, 2005. Services: Friday, January 28, 2005 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Oto. Burial: St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, rural Oto, Iowa. Vincent Jeffrey O'Connell was born icon on November 19, 1919, northwest of Oto, to Jeffrey and Elva (Gothier) O'Connell. He lived in the Anthon and Oto area all of his life. He attended rural school, St. Joseph's Catholic School at Anthon and Oto Public School, graduating from Oto High School in 1936. He attended college in Cedar Falls, Iowa, then returned home and farmed with his family. On April 17, 1941 Vincent married icon Doris E. McElrath at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Oto. Vince and Doris worked hard farming raising both crops and livestock as well as a family. When they decided to retire they moved into Oto and enjoyed their retirement years taking care of their home, yard, garden as well as dancing and traveling. Vince especially enjoyed his trips to Canada, fishing with family and friends and hunting wild turkey and deer. Both Vince and Doris enjoyed spending lots of time with their families. Doris passed away November 29, 2000. Vince was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of Oto and a 50-year member of the Knights of Columbus, receiving the Fourth Degree in 2002. He also spent lots of time working with 4-H clubs, and kids as well as the Woodbury County Fair. He also served as a council member for the town of Oto. He is survived by his children and their spouses, Marcia and Ray Brown of Sioux City, Dennis and Linda O'Connell of Upland, California, and Bill and Nancy O'Connell of Anthon; grandchildren and spouses, Steve and Michelle Brown of Omaha, Nebraska, Brenda and Tom Kellen of Kremmling, Colorado, Christy Brown and fiance, Andy Sweany of Portland, Oregon, Amy and Matt Kirby of Tempe, Arizona, Stacy O'Connell and friend, Lucas Etheredge of Fredericksburg, Texas, Jennifer and Jarrett Beeson of Correctionville, Iowa, and Eric and Jennifer O'Connell of Anthon; great-grandchildren, Camille and Alec Brown, Benjamin Kellen, Carina and Ciera Kirby, Kaleb and William O'Connell, Brennan Hoaglund, Justin and Isaac Beeson and Tyler, Cameron and Hannah O'Connell; one brother-in-law; Francis Kirsch of Holly Springs, Iowa; and many extended family members and friends. Vince was preceded in death by his wife Doris, his parents; and one sister, Pauline Kirsch.

RALPH W. WILCOX, 95, of Kingsley passed away on Saturday, January 15, 2005, at the Kingsley Nursing and Rehab Center. Services: 10:30 a.m. Friday January 21, 2005 at the Rock Branch United Methodist Church, rural Correctionville, Iowa, with the Rev. Karl Harman, Th.D. officiating. Burial: Rock Branch Fairfield Cemetery. Visitation: after 2 p.m. Thursday, January 20, with the family present 5 to 7 p.m., at Rohde-Earnest Funeral Home in Kingsley. Ralph Wayne Wilcox, the second child of William and Rebecca (Yount) Wilcox, was born icon Aug. 10, 1909, on the family farm in Wolf Creek Township, Woodbury County, Iowa. His early education was received at home from his mother, a former school teacher. He attended Moville (Iowa) High School, graduating with the class of 1924. He attended Morningside College in Sioux City and Iowa State University in Ames. As a young man, he farmed with his father and worked on threshing crews in the Dakotas. In 1934, he moved to a farm in Wolf Creek Township and farmed there until retiring in 1969. It was here that he and his wife, Elsie (Bohle), whom he married icon on July 20, 1936, raised six children and became active members of the Rock Branch community. He was a director of Wolf Creek School No. 1, a member of the Anthon (Iowa) School board, was active in the Farm Bureau and a leader for the Wolf Creek Progressors 4-H Club. He was a 69-year member of Rock Branch United Methodist Church, being confirmed there Jan. 26, 1936. He was the longest standing member of the church. He served on the board as a Sunday school teacher and in various other capacities. He also served on the board of the rural Woodbury Unit of the American Cancer Society. His wife, Elsie, passed away on May 6, 1963. A pioneer in the area of soil conservation, he was instrumental in the formation of the Woodbury County Soil Conservation District and served 18 years as a commissioner. He built some of the first terraces in Woodbury County on his farm in the late 1930's and was one of the first farmers in the area to use contour farming. He received numerous awards for his conservation practices. After complications with eye surgery, he turned much of the farming over to his growing family. He was elected to the Woodbury County Board of Supervisors, serving for 15 years, from 1961 to 1976. An avid reader and writer, he maintained an active interest in local government affairs and expressed his views often in mini editorials and letters to the editor of the Sioux City Journal well into his 90's. He married icon Alma Erdman on Aug. 20, 1965. They resided on the home farm until moving to an acreage near Kingsley and eventually into Kingsley. They enjoyed many winters at their home in McAllen, Texas. Alma died April 2, 2002. Survivors include six children and their spouses, W. Gary and Venita Wilcox of Correctionville, Iowa, Leonard and Karen Wilcox of Correctionville, Duane and Barbara Wilcox of Philadelphia, Pa., Gayle and Carl Palmquist of Lawton, Iowa, Rex and Cathy Wilcox of Storm Lake, Iowa, and Dr. Lori Wilcox and Stephen Creasey of Minneapolis; 13 grandchildren and spouses, Renee and Troy Jerman, Ryan and Debra Wilcox, Robin Wilcox and Christian Niera, Denise and Scott Masters, Roger Wilcox, Christopher and Brenda Wilcox, Jennifer and Robert Stratton, Dr. Eric, Palmquist, Dr. Bradley and Missy Wilcox, Rebecca Palmquist-Clausen and Nicolaus Clausen, John Wilcox, Kaitlyn Creasey and W. Blake Creasey; and 14 great-grandchildren.In addition to his wives, he was preceded in death by a sister, Hazel Wilcox; and two infant daughters, Cheryl and Joyce.In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be directed to Rock Branch United Methodist Church, the Woodbury County Library or the Goodwill Mission's annual children's shoe party.

MAXINE LUCILLE FEDDERSEN 88, of Anthon passed away on Friday, January 7, 2005, at the Holstein Good Samaritan Center in Holstein, Iowa. Services Monday, January 10, 2005 at the United Methodist Church in Anthon, with the Rev. Sheryl Ashley officiating. Burial: in Mount Hope Cemetery, Battle Creek, Iowa. Armstrong Funeral Home in Anthon is in charge of arrangements. Maxine was born icon on February 16, 1916, in Battle Creek, Iowa to Max and Eva (Wheeler) Spiese. She grew up and was educated in Battle Creek. On August 5, 1936 she married icon Lester Feddersen also of Battle Creek, Iowa in services in Sioux City. Maxine spent most of her life raising her six children on the family farm. Maxine and Lester moved to their farm southeast of Anthon in 1952. Lester passed away on March 11, 2001. Maxine and Lester enjoyed dancing and playing cards with their family and friends. She also enjoyed the many shopping trips with her sisters. She especially enjoyed visits from her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a member of the Rebecca Lodge of Battle Creek and the Anthon Women's Club for many years. Les and Maxine were members of the United Methodist Church at Anthon. Survivors left to cherish her memory include four sons and their wives, Bob and Marci of Hornick, Larry and Marge of Anthon, Vince and Kathy of Sioux City and Phil and Peggy of Hornick; two daughters, Marlene Albers of Battle Creek and Dianna Lillie and her husband, Ray, of Mankato, Minnesota; 15 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; six sisters, Katherine Kisenmacher of Holstein, Mildred Ernst and her husband, Ray, of Ida Grove, Iowa, Becky Schmidt and her husband, Roger, of Holstein, Bonita Diamond and her husband, Don, of Pleasant Hill, Iowa, Alice Miller and her husband, Earl, of Santa Monica, Calif., and Linda Mattson and her husband, Bob, of Gardenville, Nev.; along with many nieces and nephews and many neighbors and good friends. Besides her husband Lester, Maxine was preceded in death by her parents; a stepmother; one brother; and one sister.

PRISCILLA PITKIN GILBERT, 79, died in St. Louis, Missouri, on January 2, 2005, following a valiant, 10-year struggle with several different types of cancer. PRICILLA Born May 18, 1925, in Anthon, she graduated from Anthon High School in 1943 and enrolled in the College of Nursing at the University of Iowa. With World War II on, and she joined the Cadet Nurse Corps while in school, spending the last six months of her training at the U. S. Naval Hospital in San Diego, California. She then took a position as a registered nurse at the University of Michigan Hospitals in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where she met Richard L. (Dick) Gilbert. They married icon on June 6, 1948.
In 1949, after Dick's graduation from law school, the Gilberts moved to St. Louis, Missouri, Dick to begin a long association with Gilbert Buick Co. and Priscilla to establish a home. Priscilla considered homemaking and child rearing important and noble professions and she was very accomplished at them. She and Dick raised four children, providing each nurture, support, encouragement, and instillation of values. She also found time for activity with a wide variety of community organizations, including major involvements with the Webster Hills United Methodist Church in Webster Groves, Missouri.
As a member of what has been called "the greatest generation, " Priscilla valued loyalty and patriotism. She was especially proud of her family's connections, extending over four generations, with the United States Navy. He father was in the Navy during World War I. During World War II, she served as a Cadet Nurse in a Naval Hospital and her future husband was a Naval officer in the Pacific. A son and a grandson each graduated from the Naval Academy and a granddaughter currently serves as a Naval officer.
Priscilla always exhibited a zest for living, a spirit of adventure, and a passion to experience all life had to offer. When her children were small, she organized and directed family camping trips every summer that eventually covered most of North America. Later, when she and Dick were alone, they traveled extensively throughout the world. Even the increasing vicissitudes of age and disease could not dull her relish to see new places and meet new people. Her last trip, an Alaskan cruise, came just a few months before her death.
Although she had not lived in Anthon for many years, Priscilla (or Percy, as she was known in Anthon) maintained strong ties with her hometown. She visited frequently and attended a number of high school reunions. She often said she wanted to be buried in Anthon and, on Memorial Day, 2005, her family gathered at Oak Hill Cemetery to inter her remains.
Survivors include her husband of 55 years, their four children: Richard P. Gilbert of Weston, Florida; The Reverend Virginia Wheeler of Laguna Beach, California; Dr. William M. Gilbert of Sacramento, California; and Roderick C. Gilbert of Lexington, South Carolina; eight grandchildren; a sister, Helen Pitkin Johnson of Moberly, Missouri; and a brother, Roy M. Pitkin of La Quinta, California.

CHARLES "CHUCK" DICUS 73, of Sioux City and formerly of Anthon passed away on Friday, December 24, 2004. Services: Tuesday, December 28, 2004 and burial in Memorial Park Cemetery. Christy-Smith Funeral Home in Sioux City was in charge of arrangements. Chuck was born icon in Anthon on July 14, 1931 to James and Julia (Clausen) Dicus. He grew up in Anthon, and lived most of his life in Sioux City, California and Washington state. Survivors include two brothers, Benjamin and Ardel and his wife Gladys; two sisters Bonnie and Oscar Draper and Jeanette and Richard Martin, and a sister-in-law Charlene Rush, all of Sioux City; as well as several nieces and nephews. Chuck was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, James of Killeen Texas, Dean of Shelton, Washington, George and Dale Dicus of Sioux City, and Jerry Schmidt of Sioux City.

RAY T. ENGLAND 86, of Anthon, and formerly of Bondurant, Iowa passed away Tuesday, December 21, 2004. Services; Tuesday, December 28, 2004 in Altoona, Iowa at the Hamilton Funeral Home. Burial: Sandiago Cemetery, Bondurant, Ray Thomas England was born icon in Dayton, Ohio on August 18, 1920 to Charles and Claudia England. He graduated in 1938 from Stivers High School in Ohio. In September of 1942 he entered the United States Army. He was honorably discharged in October 1945. He served his combat duty in Italy during W.W. II. On September 8, 1947, he was united in Darlene McCleary at Bondurant. Darlene passed away on January 27, 1967. On September 24, 1970 he married icon Gwendolyne (Shever) Heckman in Bondurant where the couple made their home until they moved to Anthon in 1987. Gwen passed away on October 22, 2004. Ray was a member of the Christian Church in Bondurant and the American Legion Post #396 in Bondurant. Survivors include two daughters and their husbands; Linda and Ken Pollock of Huxley, Iowa and Patty and Jeff Haven of Clearwater, Florida; one son and his wife, Tom and Sheila England of Berwick, Iowa; a stepson and his wife, George and Lois Heckman of Marietta, Georgia; nine grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren; one brother and his wife, Eugene and Elsie England of Hurber Heights, Ohio. Ray was preceded in death by both his wives, his parents and several brothers and sisters.

GERALD "SHORTY" W. NELSON 82, of Oto passed away on Wednesday, December 15, 2004.Burial: Mount Hope Cemetery, Mapleton, Iowa, Monday, December 20, 2004. Gerald William was born icon to Harry and Meta Nelson on March 7, 1922 at Turin, Iowa. On March 25, 1944 he married icon Betty Jean McClure in Onawa, Iowa. Gerald and Betty Jean lived in Whiting and in 1957 the family moved to a farm northwest of Oto, Iowa where they made their home and living. Betty Jean passed away September 27, 1991. Survivors include one daughter; Betty Nelson of Anthon, three sons, James of Oto, Dave of Iowa and Harold of Texas; four Grandchildren, Bob Nelson, Jennifer Knutson, Thomas Ferdig, and Tracy Nelson; four great-grandchildren, three sisters, Lenora Gloyer, Maxine Christianson, and Shirley and her husband Guy Richardson, all of Whiting, Iowa and two brothers; John and his wife Eva of Whiting, and Raymond of Mapleton, Iowa. Armstrong Funeral Home of Mapleton was in charge of arrangements.
