Adeline Johnson

Adeline Ida "Addie" Johnson, 96, of Winfield, died Wednesday, June 16, 2004, at Sunrise Terrace Care Center in Winfield.

Born Feb. 20, 1908, in Cassville, Wis., she was the daughter of Thomas and Nancy Moorland Bramble. In 1927, she married Louis Melvin Johnson in Chicago. He died in 1973.

Mrs. Johnson was a cook at various restaurants.

She was of the Catholic faith and was a member of the Moose. She enjoyed doing needlework.

Survivors include eight daughters, Virginia Polley of Sikeston, Mo., Marilyn Bove of Phoenix, Ariz., Betty Johnson of Tennessee, Arlene Cline of Winterset, Hazel Apodaca of Aurora, Ill., Jane Johnson of Des Moines, Laura Johnson of Winfield and Adeline Johnson of Sioux City; six sons, Tony Walker of New Jersey, Jerry Johnson and Alan Johnson, both of Sullivan, Ill., Neil Evans of Earlham, Gene Evans of Cassville and David Johnson of Illinois; 65 grandchildren; and many, many great–grandchildren and great–great–grandchildren.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, one daughter, three sons, several grandchildren and brothers and sisters.

There will be no visitation.

The graveside service for Mrs. Johnson will be at 3 p.m. Saturday in Trinity Cemetery in Mount Union, with the Rev. Murray Phillips officiating.

Honts Funeral Home in Winfield is in charge of arrangements.

Anna Dennison

Anna Louise Dennison, 95, of Oquawka, Ill., died at 8:55 a.m. Friday, June 18, 2004, at Community Medical Center in Monmouth, Ill.

Born April 17, 1909, in Kirkwood, Ill., she was the daughter of Asa F. and Beulah Dughman Wever. On Oct. 24, 1941, she married Leman A. Dennison in Henderson County, Ill. He died Aug. 30, 1992.

Mrs. Dennison taught in country schools near Kirkwood and Point Pleasant, Ill. She also taught at Seaton, Roseville and Biggsville, Ill., schools. She later taught at Willits Elementary School in Monmouth until retiring in 1973.

She was raised and educated in Kirkwood and attended Monmouth College and received her teacher's certificate from Western Illinois Teacher's College in Macomb, Ill.

She was a member of Oquawka United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women. She was a former member of the Illinois Teachers Association, Henderson County Retired Teachers Association, Chief Shaubena chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution and Oquawka Chapter of Order of the Eastern Star until it disbanded. She loved to teach.

Survivors include a number of cousins.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents.

Visitation will be from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Monday at Turnbull Funeral Home in Monmouth.

The funeral for Mrs. Dennison will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Turnbull Funeral Home, with the Rev. Richard Lewis officiating. Burial will be in Center Grove Cemetery in Kirkwood, Ill.

Memorials have been established for Oquawka United Methodist Church and Extended Care at Community Medical Center.

Dorothy Griffin

Dorothy Pogemiller "Dottie" Griffin, 82, of New Orleans, formerly of Morning Sun and Burlington, died of congestive heart failure Friday, May 30, 2003, at Memorial Medical Center in New Orleans.

Born May 5, 1921, in Morning Sun, she was the daughter of Henry Earl and Nancy Harriet Pogemiller. She married Darrell E. Griffin Jr.

Mrs. Griffin was a homemaker.

She graduated from the nursing program at Burlington General Hospital. She joined the Army Nurse Corps during World War II and served on active duty in the Philippines, Japan and Alaska. She was one of the founding members of Ikebana International. She was a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in New Orleans and active with the German Seamen's Mission. She lived in New Orleans for the past 36 years.

Survivors include her husband; one daughter, Nancy Griffin–Dittli of Neumunster, Germany; one son, Darrell E. Griffin III of Tacoma, Wash.; three grandchildren; and four sisters, Betty Harsh of Morning Sun, Mary Witek of Picayune, Miss., Earleen Henry of LaGrange, Ga., and Joanne Moard of Chandler, Ariz.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters and one brother–in–law.

A memorial service for Mrs. Poggemiller was held on Thursday, June 5, 2003, at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in New Orleans. Since she donated her body to Tulane University Medical School, burial will be at a later date.

Memorials have been established for Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in New Orleans, the American Diabetes Association and a charity of the donor's choice.

Bill Armold

William "Bill" John Armold, 47, formerly of Burlington, died Tuesday, July 29, 2003, in Astoria, Ore.

Born Aug. 18, 1955, in Cedar Rapids, he was the son of John C. and Janet Van Skike Armold. In 1990, he married Diane Musselman in Red Lodge, Mont. She died in December 1993.

He graduated from Burlington High School in 1973 and from the University of Montana in 1982 with a bachelor of arts in geography. He was a land–use planner and planning administrator for 22 years in Montana and Oregon. He was the community development director for Clatsop County, Ore.

Survivors include his parents, two sisters, Cheryl Buck of Peoria, Ill., and Sandra Petersen of Kearney, Neb.; numerous nieces and nephews, one great–niece and one great–nephew.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at First Baptist Church in Astoria. The family can be reached at 5350 Ash St., Astoria, Ore. 97103.

Memorial contributions may be made to Lower Columbia Hospice or the American Cancer Society in care of Hughes–Ransom Mortuary, 576 12th St., Astoria, Ore. 97103.

Cynthia Styron

Cynthia Styron, 30, of Mount Pleasant, died Thursday, Aug. 1, 2002, at Henry County Health Center in Mount Pleasant.

Visitation will begin after noon Saturday at Olson–Powell Memorial Chapel in Mount Pleasant, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

A memorial service for Ms. Styron will be at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Olson–Powell Memorial Chapel. A funeral service and burial will be in Missouri next week.

A memorial has been established for the education of her children.

Charles Wasson Jr.

Charles "Charlie" Larry Wasson Jr., 45, of Burlington, died at 10:45 a.m. Friday, July 30, 2004, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics after a year's battle with acute myelocytic leukemia.

Born March 15, 1959, in Burlington, he was the son of Charles Wasson Sr. and Nancy Diewold Corman.

Mr. Wasson was a carpenter for 10 years before becoming disabled. He was educated in Danville and Burlington. He was a member of Harmony Bible Church.

He enjoyed boating, camping, working in his garage and decorating for holidays outside.

Survivors include his wife, Sheila Heath Wasson of Burlington; one stepdaughter, Shannon Reynolds of Burlington; one stepson, Tom Heath of Oxford; his father of Burlington; his mother of Mount Sterling; five grandchildren; two brothers, Dewey Wasson of Carlisle, Ky., and Ed Wasson of Burlington, and one sister, Melody Brewer of Mount Sterling.

The funeral for Mr. Wasson will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Harmony Bible Church in Danville with the Rev. Danny Dingus officiating. The body has been cremated.

Gay–Ciha Funeral Home and Crematory in Iowa City is in charge of the arrangements.

A memorial has been established.

Alene Miller

Alene M. Miller, 64, of Keokuk, died at 6:50 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2003, at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, Ill.

Born March 19, 1939, she was the daughter of Paul and Florence Jones. On July 13, 1979, she married Ralph Miller.

Mrs. Miller worked with Community Action as a family development specialist for more than 20 years.

She was a 40–year resident of Keokuk and a member of Southside Boat Club.

Survivors include her husband; one son, Paul George of Keokuk; one daughter, Michele Samuelson of Durant; one stepson, Harold A. Miller of Watts, Okla.; and seven grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. Sunday at DeJong's Funeral Home in Keokuk, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m.

The funeral for Mrs. Miller will be at 10 a.m. Monday at DeJong's Funeral Home, with the Rev. Craig Burton officiating. Burial will be in Keokuk National Cemetery.

Paul D. Rynell

Paul Duane Rynell, 69, of Burlington, died Sunday, August 10, 2003, at his home.

Born May 30, 1934, in Trenton, Missouri, he was the son of Conrad and Agnes Erickson Rynell.

Mr. Rynell was the Des Moines County Assessor for 33 years, retiring in 1998. He graduated from Trenton, Missouri High School and the University of Missouri at Columbia. He was a member of Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity, Elks Club Lodge No. 84, Fraternal Order of the Eagles Aerie No. 150, Des Moines County Conservation, Ducks Unlimited, Pheasants Forever, and V.F.W. Post 7641 of New London. He was an avid sportsman with a sharp mind who enjoyed playing the stock market and winning local drawings and sports pools with Mary Lou. He was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church. Paul was also a champion corn grower in Missouri in 1951 and 1952.

Survivors include his long time best friend and partner, Mary Lou Kitterman; two daughters, Lesley (Todd) Rynell Vlaanderen of Sioux City and Jacqueline Anne (Richard) Saunders of Waconia, Minnesota; three granddaughters, Lauren and Kathryn Vlaanderen and Sydni Saunders; one sister, June Pickett of Trenton, Missouri.

His parents preceded him in death.

The graveside memorial funeral service for Mr. Rynell will be Thursday, August 14th at 1:00 PM at Walnut Grove Cemetery , Media, Illinois. Friends may meet at Lunning Chapel on Thursday and plan to leave at 12:30 PM for the cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for Partners for Conservation Foundation, P.O. Box 714, Burlington, Iowa 52601.

Alfred Kokjohn

Dr. Alfred J. Kokjohn, 80, of Fort Madison, died at 1:10 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2003, at Fort Madison Community Hospital. Arrangements are pending at King–Lynk Funeral Home in Fort Madison.

Calvin Packard

Calvin E. Packard, 80, of Fort Madison, died at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 14, 2004, at his home.

Born Aug. 30, 1923, in Renwick, he was the son of Harry H. and Ruth K. Obermeier Packard. On June 20, 1943, he married Carol K. Holverson in Little Rock, Ark.

Mr. Packard served in the Army as a staff sergeant during World War II. He owned and operated Urick Implement in Garner. He later owned and operated Downtown Plymouth in Mason City and was a pilot and instructor for Dwyer Aircraft in Mason City. He also owned and operated A & W in Fort Madison for 10 years.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, and was a 50–year member of Claypoole Masonic Lodge 13 AF & AM. He loved fly fishing.

Survivors include his wife of Fort Madison; two sons, Paul Packard and Brent Packard, both of Fort Madison; one daughter, Faith Smith of Niota, Ill.; eight grandchildren; seven great–grandchildren; one brother, Keith Packard of Palm Desert, Calif.; one sister, Joyce Scott of Auburn, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, one sister and one great–grandson.

Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. Monday at King–Lynk Funeral Home in Fort Madison, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., with a Masonic service at 7 p.m.

The funeral for Mr. Packard will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at King–Lynk Funeral Home, with the Rev. Brenda Goodall officiating. Burial will be in Soldiers Circle in Oakland Cemetery.

A memorial has been established.
