DOROTHY M. DAVIS, 96, of Anthon passed away on Wednesday, June 30, 2004, at the Correctionville Nursing and Rehab Center in Correctionville, Iowa. Services: Friday July 2, 2004 at Armstrong Funeral Home in Anthon, with the Rev. Karl Harman officiating. Burial: Oak Hill Cemetery, Anthon. Dorothy Mae was born icon Feb. 26, 1908, at Holly Springs, Iowa, to Joseph and Nell (Forney) VanCleve. As a child she lived in Nebraska and then returned to Holly Springs. Dorothy helped her mother operate the area telephone service. Dorothy married icon Clarence Henry Davis at Sioux City, Iowa on March 3, 1926. The couple farmed in the Rodney, Smithland, and Anthon, Iowa areas. They moved into the town of Anthon in 1946. Dorothy worked as a cook at the Anthon High School for 25 years. She was well known as a great cook and was praised especially for her taverns. Her dear husband Clarence passed away on Jan. 27, 2004. Dorothy took pride in her flower gardens. She especially enjoyed her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Survivors left to cherish her memory include one daughter, Wilma Rewey of Sioux City; a son and his wife, Don and Maureen Davis of Efland, North Carolina; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Margaret Blackwell of Colorado. Besides her husband, Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Geraldine Bainbridge of Anthon; two grandsons; a great-grandson; a great-granddaughter; a brother; and five sisters.

ERIC ROBERT DIXON, son of former residents Robert and Dianne (McDermott) Dixon died as a result of injuries sustained in a plane crash near Sioux Lookout, Canada on 18 May 2004. Eric's funeral Mass was held at St John's Catholic Church in Waunakee, Wisconsin, where Eric was a member until last September, when he was transferred to Columbus, Ohio. His Mass was 25 May 2004 with Monsignor James Gunn and Father Laurin Wenig, a personal friend of Eric, concelebrating. Father Wenig also gave the eulogy. Military honors were conducted by the United States Army and the US flag was presented to Eric's wife, Holli, by Eric's brother, Tim.
Eric was 39, just having had his birthday. He was Eastern Regional Claims Manager with American Family Insurance out of Madison, Wisconsin. He graduated at Dominican High School and was a graduate of the University of Wisconsin, in Milwaukee.
Eric spent time here at Anthon and Oto in his younger years, visiting his grandparents; Leo and Loretta McDermott of Oto, and Francis "Flip" and Edna Dixon of Anthon, all deceased, as well as Aunts, Uncles, and cousins still in the Iowa area. Survivors are his wife, Holli and son Noah, age two. Other immediate survivors are his parents, sisters; Kelley and Kerry both of St. Paul, Minnesota, Jill of Philadelphia, PA, and a brother, Tim who is with the United States Air Force, at Hurlburt Field, Florida. He is also survived by seven nieces and nephews, brothers-in-law and Holli's family. Eric's parents Rob and Dianne are currently residing at 346 Michael Court, Mary Esther, Florida 32569. Thoughts and prayers are with all of Eric's family.

MICHAEL RAY ZAWODNY 36, of Anthon, formerly of Leavenworth, Kansas, died in Omaha, Nebraska on Sunday, May 23, 2004. Services were held Thursday, May 27, 2004 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Leavenworth, Kansas. Burial was in Mount Muncie Cemetery, Kansas. Arrangements were under the direction of Barnett-Larkin-Brown Funeral Home in Leavenworth. Michael was born icon on March 24, 1968 to Dennis J. Zawodny and Darlene S. (Leavitt) Zawodny Rivera, in Leavenworth, Kansas. He graduated from Lansing High School in 1986 and attended Pittsburg State University. He had been the manager at the Wheel Thing Skate Center in Leavenworth, had DJ'ed at skate parties, and was a Magician who loved doing tricks for kids. He also loved computers and anything to do with electronics. He had worked as a farm laborer in Iowa during harvest time and had also done home remodeling and woodworking projects. He worked in the carnival business since he was 18 years old and was also the owner of Z-Games Concessions. He was a graduate from Clown College and was known as "Zippy the Clown." He loved spending time with his son, Jacob. He was a single dad, and had raised his son Jacob on his own since Jacob was a baby. He was a big kid at heart. Jacob's friends always told him he had the "coolest dad." Jacob was especially grateful that his dad never grew up. Jacob will always have the memories of his Dad always being there for him and doing things together. Michael was very involved as a parent in school activities and always attended field trips, and helped during school events. Jacob also has fond memories of playing the guitar and the drums together with his father. They were both big KISS fans and were both personally acquainted with the KISS rock group. Michael was a big joker and was a great friend to all. He would drop whatever he was doing to help his friends. He had many friends and had a huge heart. He was very talented and could do anything. His son Jacob was his life and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends. He was a member of the Church Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Leavenworth. He is survived by his son, Jacob A. Zawodny at home; his mother, Darlene S. Zawodny Rivera of Leavenworth; his father, Dennis J. Zawodny and his wife, Alberta A. Zawodny of Leavenworth; his grandmothers, Claudine Leavitt Zule and Priscilla Fleek, both of Leavenworth; a brother, Jeffery of Leavenworth; a sister, Scarlett of Sabetha, Kan.; four uncles; three nieces; a nephew; and many cousins, and friends. The family requests that any memorials be made to the Jacob Zawodny Trust Fund in care of the Barnett-Larkin-Brown Funeral Home, 707 S. 6th Street, Leavenworth, Kansas 66048.

KENDELL O. SLENTZ, 76, of Anthon passed away Sunday, May 2, 2004, at Maple Heights Nursing Home in Mapleton, Iowa. Funeral service: Thursday May 6, 2004 at the Oto United Church of Christ in Oto, Iowa, with the Rev. Karen Handke officiating. Burial: in the Oto Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the American Legion Henry McKenna Post #651 and the Little Sioux Valley Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #9125, both of Oto. Arrangements:under the direction of Armstrong Funeral Home in Anthon. Kendell Oliver Slentz was born icon June 30, 1927, in Smithland, Iowa, to Roy Earl and Olive Vivian (Neumayer) Slentz. As a small boy, his family moved to the Mapleton area and then to the Oto, Iowa area. While attending High School at Oto during the 1945 school year, Kendell left to join the U.S. Navy with his twin brother, Kenneth. They served their country together during World War II. Upon his honorable discharge, Kendell returned home and went back to school, graduating with the Oto High School class of 1948. On Dec. 26, 1948, he married icon Doris Ives, also of Oto. He continued his higher education and received his bachelors degree from Wayne State College in 1954. In 1962, he did graduate work in Boulder, Colo. He was a school teacher in Iowa for several years and later the couple taught military children in the countries of Japan, Germany and Newfoundland. The couple moved to Illinois. Kendell worked there for the U.S. government teaching transportation of hazardous materials until his retirement in 1987. He and Doris moved from Thompson, Illinois to Anthon in 1998. For 16 years, the couple spent winters in Weslaco, Texas. Kendell was a member of the Oto United Church of Christ, the American Legion Henry McKenna Post #651 and the Little Sioux Valley Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #9125. He loved outdoor activities such as fishing and hunting, as well as working with his hands and being with friends and family. He had a great sense of humor and was an avid story teller. He is survived by his wife, Doris of Anthon; his twin brother and his wife, Kenneth and Dorothy Slentz of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada; two sisters and their husbands, Zella and Albert Copley of Prescott Valley, Ariz.; and Gayla and John Wilson of Anthon; an aunt, Opal Brandt of Holstein, Iowa; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and good friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; and three sisters, La Vonne and twins, Karon and Sharon.

CLIFFORD R. HESS 95, of Onawa, formerly of Anthon, Iowa, passed away on Friday, April 30, 2004, at Pleasant View Care Center in Whiting, Iowa. Funeral services: 1 p.m. Monday May 3, 2004 at Castana Community Church in Castana, Iowa, with the Revs. Bob Fritzmeier and Karen Handke officiating. Burial will be in Piero Bethel Cemetery, rural Anthon. Clifford was born icon April 1, 1909, in Ida Grove, Iowa, to Burton and Ethel (Grace) Hess. He graduated from Lawton (Iowa) High School in 1926, and attended Morningside College. He was united in married icon Florence Shoemaker on June 6, 1934, in Bronson, Iowa. She passed away on Feb. 14, 1972. He married icon Lois Brink on Aug. 15, 1981, in Castana. Clifford worked for Eberly Contracting of Lawton, Iowa, in dirt construction and farmed near Anthon from 1942 until moving to Onawa in 1999. He was a member of Castana Community Church. Survivors include his wife, Lois of Onawa; two sons and their wives, Jon and Carmen Hess of Moville, Iowa, and Joe and Carolyn Hess of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; a daughter-in-law, Vicki Hess of Rock Island, Ill.; a stepdaughter, Patty Brink of Minneapolis; four stepsons, Bill Brink and his wife, Cathy, of Castana, Ardel Brink of Denver, Colo., Gary Brink and his wife, Sherrie, of Alexandria, Minn., and Roger Brink and his wife, Susie, of Onawa; 17 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren. In addition to his first wife; Florence, he was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Charles; an infant daughter, Mary Isabelle; and a brother, Roscoe Hess.

MARGARET (WILSON) BRENNER 88, of Anthon died Friday, April 9, 2004, at Correctionville Nursing and Rehab Center in Correctionville, Iowa. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Anthon. Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. Monday, with a Catholic Daughters rosary at 3:30 p.m., and a vigil wake service at 7 p.m., at Armstrong Funeral Home in Anthon. Margaret Christine Brenner was born icon on Sept. 18, 1915, at Anthon, Iowa, to Raymond E. and Anna C.(Lorenzen) Wilson. She attended St. Joseph's Catholic Grade School and High School in Anthon and graduated from Anthon Public High School in 1934. On June 18, 1934, she was united in marriage to Vivian M. Franks in Anthon. The couple sold automobiles and Allis Chalmers machinery for Petersen Chevrolet Company at Battle Creek, Iowa. In 1945, they started their own automobile repair service in Battle Creek as well as selling Dodges and Plymouths. Margaret was the bookkeeper and parts manager there until they sold the business in 1954. They moved to Storm Lake, Iowa, for a short time before moving to Tucson, Ariz., in 1955 due to Vivian's health. Margaret worked at a GMC dealership there. Vivian passed away Feb. 7, 1976. Margaret returned to Anthon and lived with her mother and furthered her education at Western Iowa Technical College. She then worked for Wilson-Drea Implement - the local John Deere Dealership at Anthon. On March 27, 1987, she married icon John Brenner at Anthon. They made their home in Danbury and Anthon. Margaret did bookkeeping for her nephew John at Wilson Motor Company at Anthon and later at the Anthon Retirement Homes, Inc. Her second husband passed away Oct. 24, 1995. Margaret was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Anthon, a lifetime member of the Catholic Daughters of America and was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. Survivors include a brother and sister-in-law, Ralph and Grace Wilson of Anthon; step children, Maureen Sitzman of Anderson, S.D., Sarah Grenier and her husband, Lloyd of Colorado Springs, Colo. and Mark Brenner of Danbury, Iowa; a step grandson, Robbie Brenner of Danbury; a sister-in-law, Irene Franks of Newport News, Va.; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husbands, Margaret was preceded in death by her parents.

ALVIN SCHWARZ 86, of Anthon passed away on April 4, 2004. Funeral services were held April 7, 2004 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Anthon.

DORIS JAN BANTA 65, of Anthon died Thursday, March 18, 2004, at a Sioux City hospital. Services were Saturday March 20, 2004 at the Church of Christ in Anthon, with the Rev. Kody Killian officiating and assisted by the Rev. Ted Sieck. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery. Armstrong Funeral Home in Anthon was in charge of arrangements. Doris Jan Banta was born icon Aug. 14, 1938, in Farnhamville, Iowa, to Clyde Richard and Mabel Arlone (Gray) Wood. She moved with her family to Syracuse, N.Y., for a couple of years and then the family returned to Iowa and resided in Correctionville, Iowa. She graduated from Correctionville High School with the class of 1956. On June 8, 1957, she was united in marriage to Dave Vic Banta in Correctionville. The couple lived in Sioux City and later made their home at Anthon. She worked at the Correctionville and Battle Creek, Iowa, nursing homes and at K-Mart in Sioux City until retiring. She was a member of Church of Christ and served as the secretary of Oak Hill Cemetery since 1969. Survivors include her husband, Dave Vic; a son and his wife, Mark and Melanie Banta of Cedar Falls, Iowa; a daughter and her husband, Vicky Lynn and Adam Marder of Fairfax, Va.; four grandchildren; two sisters and their husbands, Kathy and David Easley of Mustang, Okla., and Marilyn and Henry Skoglund of Farnhamville, Iowa; a brother, Richard Wood of Oregon; and other relatives and many good friends and neighbors. She was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Clifford.

MARVIN J. GODBERSEN 65, of Anthon, passed away on Sunday March 14, 2004, at a Sioux City hospital. Services were held on Tuesday March 16, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Anthon with burial in Oak Hill Cemetery, Anthon. Marvin was born icon June 10, 1938 to John and Emma (Petersen) Godbersen near Correctionville, Iowa. He attended and graduated from Anthon High School and worked for his father on the family farm and for other area farmers. On July 14, 1963 he married icon Louise Admire in Anthon. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and enjoyed spending time with his friends, especially at the local coffee shop. Survivors include a daughter; Caroline and her husband, Dan Barnes of Anthon; three grandchildren, Amanda and Shawn Nelson and Jacob Barnes. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son John, and a grandson, Marvin Nelson III.

GLENN E. MEISTER 62, of rural Correctionville died unexpectedly Tuesday, March 2, 2004, at a Sioux City hospital. Services: Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Moville, Iowa, with the Rev. Michael Kroona of Trinity Lutheran Church, and the Rev. Burt Burwell of Salem Lutheran Church, officiating. Burial: Arlington Township Cemetery. Mr. Meister was born icon Dec. 16, 1941, in Sioux City, the son of Otto Fredrick and Ruth Louise (Hughes) Meister. He attended and graduated from school in Moville in 1960. He married icon Betty J. Fendrick on July 31, 1965, in Thurston, Neb. He had farmed near Correctionville from 1969 to the present. He was baptized, confirmed and a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Moville. He was currently attending Salem Lutheran Church near his home in rural Correctionville. He enjoyed hunting with his son, Greg, traveling, playing cards daily at the Pierson Elevator and also enjoyed family members spending weekends and summers at the farm and letting them enjoy all of the experiences that the farm could give them. He is survived by his wife, Betty Jane (Fendrick) Meister of Correctionville; a son, Greg Meister; a brother and his wife, Verle and Connie Meister of Cheyenne, Wyo.; and two sisters and their husbands, Wilma and Frank Bollin of Anthon, Iowa, and Darlene and Lee Morey of Grundy Center, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Lloyd Meister; and his first wife, Connie (Holzman) who was killed in a car accident in 1962.

JANELL "NELLIE" McDERMOTT 42, of Anthon joined the Lord Jesus Christ on Monday, March 1, 2004, after being stricken at home. Services were held on Thursday, March 4th, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Anthon, with the Rev. Terry Roder officiating. Burial was in Mount St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery at Anthon. Janell Lea (Kemp) McDermott was born icon July 8, 1961, in Pocahontas, Iowa, to Donald "Pug" and JoAnn (Simington) Kemp. She grew up and attended school in Laurens, Iowa. On Jan. 24, 1986, she married icon Dean McDermott of Anthon. They lived at Oto, Iowa, until making Anthon their home in 1988. Janell and Dean had two children; Amber and Adam and later were blessed with two grandchildren; twins, Kyler and Kylee. She was also host-mother to the family's foreign exchange student they hosted in 1998 with the world wide organization; Youth For Understanding. "Nellie" was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church at Anthon and had taught Sunday school. She loved kids and enjoyed spending time with friends and family, especially her grandchildren. She always wore a smile, and had a sparkle in her eyes. She loved making hand-made quilts and spending as much time as she could at their second home; their cabin on Lake Superior in Hovland, Minnesota. The family did extensive traveling together operating their successful carnival business throughout the Midwestern states. Left to mourn Nellie's untimely passing is her husband, Dean; two children, Amber and Adam, both of Anthon; two grandchildren, Kyler and Kylee, both of Anthon; her mother JoAnn Kemp of Laurens, Iowa; four sisters, Julie Birchard and Rodney of Spencer, Iowa, Janeen Kemp and friend, Danny Cole of Somerset, Texas, Jill Rink and David of Eugene, Ore., and Jayne Johnson and Alex of Havelock, Iowa; Grandparents, Richard and Dellas Omen of Ruthven, Iowa; She will also be missed by many in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was preceded in death her father, Donald "Pug"; a sister, Jackie; her paternal grandfather; both maternal grandparents; and her father-in-law.
