W. ARNOLD RICHARDSON 97, formerly of Smithland died Thursday, Sept. 11, 2003, at Maple Heights Nursing Center in Mapleton, Iowa, where he had resided. Services were held on Sunday September 14, 2003 at the United Church of Christ in Oto, Iowa. Burial was in the Little Sioux Cemetery, at Smithland, Iowa. Willman Funeral Chapel in Rodney, Iowa was in charge of arrangements. Arnold was born icon on February 13, 1906, in St. Louis, Mo. He was the son of George Walker and May Richardson. He grew up in Ticonic and Onawa, Iowa. The family homesteaded in Dallas, S.D. He graduated from Onawa High School and attended Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa for one year. Arnold started a dance band while in high school and continued performing in the surrounding area for more than 50 years. On March 15, 1928 he married icon Merle Aldrich. During their married icon life, he farmed and had welding and repair shops in Onawa and Smithland. He also worked at the Cherokee State Mental Hospital for 25 years. After his retirement, the couple enjoyed winters in Texas and Arizona. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on March 15, 1978. Merle died in April 1978. He married icon Maxine Mead in September 1979. He was an avid golfer. Survivors include his wife, Maxine of Oto; a daughter, Mrs. Helen Tabke of Cheyenne, Wyo.; a son and his wife, Ray and Louise Richardson of Clayton, Minn.; a son-in-law, Miller Nickolisen of Smithland; 14 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; stepchildren, Bill and Peggy Barbee of Wichita, Kan., Bill and Cheryl Mead of Denison, Iowa, and Larry Mead of Denver, Colo.; stepgrandchildren; great-stepgrandchildren; a brother and his wife, Don and Diane Richardson of Wilamina, Ore.; a sister-in-law, Leota Aldrich of Moneta, Iowa; nieces and nephews; and a special cousin, Edna Anderson of Onawa. In addition to his first wife, Merle, he was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Randall and Rex; and a daughter, Mrs. Miller (Doris) Nickolisen

ZONA PIERCE-BAGNATO 69, former Anthon resident, passed away September 1, 2003. Funeral services were in Rochester, New York. She is survived by her husband, Louis A. Bagnato; her sons, Dennis (Kathleen) Pierce, James (Lynn) Pierce; step-children, LuAnn (Chuck) Ippolito, Steven (Sharon) Bagnato; her grandchildren, Ted, Jeff (Stacey), Tara, Trisha, Kathryn and James Pierce Jr. Jennifer and Christal Ippotito. Michael, Matt, Elizabeth and Emily Bagnato; great-grandchildren, Taylor and Jerrit Pierce; her sister, Susan Reynolds of Ames Iowa; nieces & nephews. Zona was preceded in death by her parents Sam & Kathryn (Kent) Reynolds, and her brothers; Jon (Jack) Reynolds and Robert (Bob) Reynolds. Zona was a retired Chemist at Eastman Kodak Company. GENEVIEVE BROWN 89, of Anthon passed away Thursday, Aug. 6, 2003, at a Sioux City hospital. Funeral services were held Saturday August 9, 2003 at the United Methodist Church in Anthon. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery at Anthon. Genevieve Helen Brown was born icon March 4, 1914, in Sioux City, the daughter of John and Anna (Braudt) Heath. She attended country school near Anthon as well as school in Anthon. She was united in marriage to Eldon Martin Brown on Feb. 1, 1932, in Ida Grove, Iowa. To this union six children were born. The couple farmed until 1956. The following year, they moved the family to California, where they lived for a short time. Upon their return to Anthon in 1957, they started a trucking company and she ran a clothing business and worked as a shoe cobbler. Eldon died April 28, 1979. She continued to work until 1989 and remained at home in Anthon until Feb. 8, 2003, when she entered Correctionville Nursing and Rehab Center in Correctionville, Iowa. She was a member of United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women. Her interests included playing cards, having belonged to several card clubs, gardening, bingo and fishing. She also liked to travel, having spent a couple winters in Texas. Some of her best times however, were spent with her family, especially the time spent playing with her grandchildren. Those survivors left to cherish her memory include five children and their spouses, Harold and Dee Brown of Oto, Iowa, Diane and Joe Harbaugh of Anthon, Lois and Wally Duncan of Correctionville, Iowa, Gary and Janice Brown and Joe and Susan Brown, all of Anthon; 24 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Joyce Brown of Anthon; and many nieces, nephews, good friends and neighbors. Along with her husband, she was also preceded in death by her parents; a son, Charles Paul; a grandson, Dennis Brown; a great-granddaughter, Ashley Shrophshire Duncan; a daughter-in-law, Rose Brown; two brothers and three sisters.

HAROLD HERMAN BUETTNER 87, of Anthon passed away on Tuesday, August 5, 2003, at the Correctionville Nursing and Rehab Center in Correctionville, Iowa. Services were held on Friday August 8, at the United Methodist Church in Anthon, with the Rev. Karl Harman officiating. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery at Anthon. Harold Herman Buettner was born icon on November 3, 1915, to John and Marie (Zastrow) Buettner, on the family farm near Ponca, Neb. His mother Marie died when he was six years old and he was raised by his father and stepmother, Dora Buettner. He attended school in rural Ponca and took a manual training course specializing in blacksmithing and forage welding, where he learned how to make tools, along with carpentry and working with lumber. He moved with his family to a farm east of Anthon in the spring of 1939. On December 8, 1939 Harold married icon Lucille Russell of Ponca, Nebraska at the Methodist church in Ponca. To this union, two daughters were born, Deanna and Karen. The couple farmed near Anthon for 40 years and retired into Anthon in 1979. Harold was a member of the United Methodist Church at Anthon. He was active in the church and held different offices. In the 1960's besides farming, he was a dealer for Archer Oil and was also an airplane observer for the U. S. Air Force. Harold enjoyed his family and working in his shop. He also enjoyed dancing, being with his friends at the cafe for coffee hour and golfing. He and Lucille traveled extensively during their retirement and enjoyed trips to California, Oregon and Nebraska visiting family and friends. After failing health in 1997, he enjoyed being home and sharing time with his family. He entered the Correctionville Nursing and Rehab Center in August of 2002. Survivors include his wife Lucille; two daughters and their husbands, Deanna and Dick Braun of Salix, Iowa, and Karen and Jim Peters of Correctionville; five grandchildren, Dick Braun Jr. and his wife, Donna, Kevin Braun and his wife, Debbie, and Julie and her husband, Tracy Nelson, all of Salix, Scott Peters and his wife Beth of Treynor, Iowa, and Kristi Kratch and her husband Steve of Rossie, Iowa; seven great-grandchildren, Jenna and Aaron Braun, Tyler and Lenae Nelson and Dylan, Ethan and Megan Peters; and three sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, many many good friends and neighbors. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Marie Buettner; his stepmother, Dora (Wendel)Buettner; a brother, Lawrence Buettner; and his maternal grandmother, Wilma Molt who during her later years lived with her grandsons and their families; Harold and Lucille and Lawrence and Maizel Buettner.

LUELLA MAE DICUS 82, of Sioux City, died Friday, August 1, 2003 at her residence following a lengthy illness of Alzheimer's. Services were held on Monday, August 4 at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel with burial at Memorial Park Cemetery. Luella Mae was born icon July 8, 1921 at Anthon and was the daughter of Harry Benjamin and Rose (Brune) Waugh. She graduated from Anthon High School in 1940. On October 28, 1941 she was united in marriage to Ben C. Dicus in Anthon. She was a Sioux City resident for over 50 years and had worked at St. Luke's Hospital, The Flamingo Inn in South Sioux City, Ye Old Tavern and at a Packing Plant for many years. Luealla loved dancing, music and watching bowling. She was also a member of the Whitefield United Methodist Church in Sioux City. Survivors include her husband Ben; three sons, Garry of Sioux City, Rick and his wife Shirley of Wakefield, Nebraska, and Mike and wife Tracy of Sioux City; five daughters, Sharon and Skip Smith of Spirit Lake, Iowa, Diane Spaulding of McCook Lake, SD, LuAnne Tieck and special friend Jim Hoch, Roxanne and Denny Sorensen and Connie and Jeff Larsen all of Sioux City; a brother Leonard and his wife Doris Waugh of Anthon and a sister Opal Wieck of Sioux City. 26 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; two grandchildren Scott and Sean Smith; a daughter-in-law Elizabeth Dicus, her inlaws, James and Julia Dicus and other extended family.

VIOLA ISABEL CARR 98, of Anthon passed away on Friday, June 13, 2003, at her home. Services were Tuesday June 17, 2003 at the Church of Christ in Anthon, with the Revs. Kody Killian and Lowell Burkum officiating. Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery in Sioux City. Viola Isabel Carr was born icon March 22, 1905, at Council Bluffs, Iowa. She was the daughter of Oliver Grant and Christina (Holmes) Bair. The family made their home at Atlantic, Iowa, until Viola was 3. They then moved to Anthon, where she lived most of her adult life. On Jan. 5, 1927, Viola was united in marriage to Joseph Patrick Carr in Anthon. The couple lived a short time in Minnesota and Colorado before returning to Anthon. Joe died on July 28, 1981. Viola received her teaching certificate from Morningside College in Sioux City and taught school for a few years. She worked as a cook in the cafe business and also did housework. She later became a clerk in the U.S. Post Office in Anthon, where she worked for many years. She was a member of the Church of Christ at Anthon and the Christian Ladies Society. She was known as a loving and giving person. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Peggy and Duane King of Council Bluffs; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Joe; her parents; a son, Donald; and a granddaughter, Janet. She will be remembered by many in the Anthon community as a friendly, caring person, with many quiet qualities.

LEONARD L. PALMER 63, of 31 Robinson Hill Rd., Oxford, Maine passed away on Wednesday evening May 21, 2003 at St. Mary's Regional Medical Center in Lewiston, Maine following a long illness. Leonard was born icon in Anthon, Iowa on November 28, 1939 the son of Howard G. and Gladys O. (Swanson) Palmer. He served with the U.S. Navy aboard the submarine U.S.S. Redfish and on November 3, 1961 married icon a Washington state girl; Donna L. Truitt. They had three daughters. He was employed by the State of Washington in Computer Services until his health forced him to retire in 1986. Leonard loved to travel and with his wife Donna, spent 10 years on the road in a 30-foot motorhome, summering on the Olympic Penninsula of Washington and wintering in Southern California. He and his wife moved to Maine in 2001 to be near their eldest daughter and there he enjoyed time remodeling a 100-year old house and doing all kinds of baking, which he enjoyed very much. Survivors left to cherish his memory are his wife Donna; three daughters: Tami Girardin and husband Michael of Mechanic Falls, Maine; April Alanskas and her husband Timothy of Jackson, New Jersey and Janise Witten and her husband Shawn of Coosada, Alabama; six grandchildren: Tina and Casey Girardin, Travis and Mikayla Alanskas, Cory Witten and Nathan Flaskegaard; His brothers that are still living and their wives are: Richard and Carol Palmer of Covallis, Oregon; Norman and Lois Palmer of Puyallup, Washington and Charles and Pitang Palmer of San Diego, California; his sisters and their husbands are: Mary Alice Hawcroft of Longview, Washington, Mary Elizabeth and Kip Cawthra of Walla Walla, Washington and Virginia Christian of Stanwood, Washington; as well as several nieces and nephews.

JAMES FRANK DYER, 96, of Anthon passed away Sunday, May 4, 2003, at a Sioux City hospital. Services were held Tuesday May 6, 2003 at Oto United Church of Christ in Oto, Iowa, with the Rev. Karen Handke officiating. Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery in Sioux City, with graveside military honors provided by American Legion Henry McKenna Post 651 of Oto. James Frank Dyer was born icon Dec. 31, 1906, in Mohawk, Tenn., the son of William and Frona (Crittendson) Dyer. He moved with his family to the Bronson Iowa area when he was 6 years old. He served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1942 to 1944. On Oct. 14, 1944, he married icon Emily Sachau. They lived on a farm northwest of Bronson for 16 years, moving to a farm northwest of Oto in 1960. Frank was engaged in farming until his retirement in 1984. Frank and Emily moved to Anthon in the fall of 1984. Frank loved the land and farming. He grew a huge garden until 1995, when his health wouldn't allow him to do so any longer. A great source of pride, the love of his family and music kept Frank active and alert until his death. Those left to cherish his memory include Emily, his wife of 58 years; a son and his wife, Keith and Edna Dyer of Anthon; two daughters, Eleen Ashley of Anthon, and Marilyn Ashley and her husband, George of Cushing, Iowa; two grandchildren, Rob Ashley and his wife, Traci of Moville, Iowa, and Marla Kollbaum and her husband, Aaron of Anthon; four great-grandchildren, Ashley and Logan Kollbaum and Blake and Wyatt Ashley; three sisters, Bertha Kroll of Sioux City, Dorothy Abdella and her husband, Charles of Scranton, Penn., and Melvina Kisting of Norwalk, Iowa; and a brother and his wife, Clarence and Florence Dyer of Sioux City. Frank was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Mae Robinson; a brother, Alanzo "Bud" Dyer; a sister and a brother, both in infancy; and a son-in-law, Eldon Ashley.

CLEO C. YANACHEAK, 83, of Anthon died Monday, April 14, 2003 of injuries sustained in a two vehicle accident which took place north of Moville, Iowa. Funeral services were held for Mr. Yanacheak on Wednesday, April 16, 2003 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Anthon, with the Rev. William Schreiber officiating. Burial was in Mount St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, at Anthon, with military rites conducted by American Legion Hindman-Steele Post 492 of Hornick, Iowa. Armstrong Funeral Home in Anthon was in charge of services. Cleo Charles Yanacheak was born icon May 2, 1919, on a farm near Anthon, to Charles and Helenora Pauline (Tabke) Yanacheak. He grew up and was educated in the Anthon area. He served his country in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He moved to Erie, Pa., to work in an airplane factory and it was there that he met his wife. On July 17, 1942, he was united in marriage to Genevieve Marie Scheloske in Erie, PA. They couple moved to their farm near Anthon in 1946, where they lived, worked and raised their family. They retired from farming in 1995. Genevieve passed away Feb. 27, 1998. Cleo was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus and The American Legion Hindman-Steele Post #492 of Hornick, Iowa. He is survivied by his children, David and his wife, Mary of Brownington, Vt., Nedra and her husband, Rex Haley of Des Moines, Norman and his wife, Sherry of Sioux City, Ralph and his wife, Carol of Le Mars, Iowa, Art and his wife, Diane of St. Paul, Minn., and Frank who lives on the home farm near Anthon; a close family friend and his wife, Gene and Margaret Sokolowski of Sioux City; 17 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandson; along with other relatives, neighbors and good friends. Cleo was preceded in death by his wife, parents, three grandchildren, a great-grandchild and two brothers.

ROBERT PETERSEN, 82, of Anthon died Sunday, April 13, 2003, at St. John's Medical Center in Tulsa, Okla. Services were held on Friday April 18, 2003 at St. Paul Lutheran Church; Midway, rural Battle Creek, Iowa. Rev. Thomas Sabel officiated. Burial was in St. Paul Cemetery, with military rites conducted by The American Legion McNiff Post #389 of Anthon, Iowa. Armstrong Funeral Home in Anthon was in charge of the services. Robert Bernhard Petersen was born icon March 20, 1921, near Midway, rural Correctionville, Iowa. He was born icon to Jens and Luella (Strackbein) Petersen. He grew up and was educated in the area, graduating from Anthon High School in 1939. After high school, Robert began farming. He served his country in the U.S. Navy;in the South Pacific from 1944 to 1946-during World War II. Upon his honorable discharge, he returned to the Midway area and resumed farming. On July 17, 1949, he married icon Enid Neal in Moorhead, Iowa. They raised their family on the farm and retired in 1981. Robert & Enid moved to Sioux City after they retired and later moved back to Anthon. Robert was a lifetime member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and was involved with the Woodbury Residential Center for several years. Survivors include his wife Enid, of 53 years; two sons and their wives, Scott and Priscilla Petersen and their son, Alex of Independence, Kan., and Alan and Annjean Petersen and their children, April, Jeremy and Robert of Reinbeck, Iowa; a daughter and her husband, Lori and Mitch Gates and their children, Emily and Ian of Colorado Springs, Colo.; a brother and his wife, Marvin and Roberta Petersen of Anthon; a sister-in-law, Vera Petersen of Danbury, Iowa; and several other relatives, neighbors and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Lester and Benny.

Former teacher and Anthon resident KEITH FITCH, 52, of LeMars, Iowa passed away on Tuesday, April 8, 2003, at a Sioux City hospital. Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 12, with final resting in St. Paul's Lutheran Church Cemetery, Midway, rural Battle Creek, Iowa. [No information received.]

Former A-O Superintendent ELLIS H. FRANCIS, age 77, of Storm Lake, passed away on Tuesday, April 1, 2003. Funeral services were held Saturday, April 5, 2003 at the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake. Interment was in Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake. Sliefert-Asmus Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Ellis H. Francis was born icon the son of Clem and Grace (Horton) Francis on February 2, 1926 in rural Linn Grove, Iowa. He attended Linn Grove Schools and following his graduation, he attended Buena Vista College for one year. He was a gunners mate on the ESSO Dartmouth in the U.S. Navy during WW II. After his honorable discharge, Ellis finished his degree in Business and Education. He later received his Masters Degree at the University of Northern Iowa. On October 17, 1947, Ellis was united in marriage to Phyllis Heschke at the Methodist Church Parsonage. This union was blessed with five children: Marilyn, Donna, Larry, Thomas and Mark. Ellis dedicated his life to teaching. He taught at Arcadia and at Lake Township near Terril, he was a superintendent at Cornell, Bayard, Meriden-Cleghorn and Anthon-Oto schools and he was a principal in Manson. He was the business manager at Southwestern Community College. He also taught at Job Corps in Denison. Ellis retired in 1990. Ellis was very active in his community. He was a member of United Methodist Church in Storm Lake and he served with Northwest Iowa Aging. He enjoyed working with genealogy and was active in the Buena Vista Genealogy Society and Buena Vista Historical Society. He also enjoyed gardening, traveling, and spending time with his family. Ellis is survived by his wife, Phyllis, of Storm Lake; his mother, Grace Francis, of Sioux Rapids; two daughters: Marilyn Drake and her husband, Rodney, of Las Vegas, Nev. and Donna Shaver of Sioux City; three sons: Larry Francis and his wife, Linda, of Fargo, N.D., Tom Francis and his wife, Sherry, of Fort Dodge, and Mark Francis and his wife, Donna, of Wonderlake, Ill.; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one sister: Jean Hurley and her husband, Buck, of Oak Island, N.C.; and one sister-in-law: Jean Francis, of Anoka, Minn. Ellis was preceded in death by his father, Clem; three brothers: Joe, Jon and Bruce; one son-in-law, Patrick Shaver; and one brother-in-law, Robert Heschke.
