ELDON "HANK" PUTZIER SR., 67, Anthon died Tuesday, April 1, 2003, at his residence. Services were Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Anthon, with the Rev. Thomas Sabel officiating. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery. Eldon Henry "Hank" Putzier Sr. was born icon Aug. 20, 1935, near Cushing, Iowa, the son of Elvin and Mamie (Rohwedder) Putzier.In June 1957, he married icon Sharon Heath of Correctionville, Iowa. He married icon Marian Peltier in February 1990, in Texas. He worked in the construction industry as a heavy equipment operator. He was most recently employed with Mathers Construction of Correctionville. Prior to that, he enjoyed farming for Don Hennings of Moville, Iowa. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Anthon. He enjoyed any outdoor activity including, hunting and fishing. He also liked to play cards, but most of all he found pleasure in spending quality time with his family. He is survived by his wife, Marian; three sons, Donald "Hoss" Putzier and his wife, Cindy, of Pea Ridge, Ark., Dale Putzier and his fiancee, Sandy Holmes, of Wilton, Calif., and Dennis Putzier and his wife, Michelle, of Sioux City; a stepson and his wife, Robert and Lynle Presley of Rogers, Ark.; four daughters, Debra and her husband, Chris Fegenbush, Tina and her husband, Douglas Young, and Krystal and her husband, Douglas Gough, all of Sioux City, and Kandi Putzier of Lawton, Iowa; three stepdaughters, Tina and her husband, Dwain Coleman, of Boles, Ark., Brenda Presley and her fiance, John Gustafson, of Rogers, Ark., and Teresa Presley and her fiance, Kevin Artman, of Bentonville, Ark.; two brothers and three sisters, Frank and Bonnie Putzier and Fritz and Sis Putzier, all of Anthon, Evelyn Livermore of Lynchburg, Mo., Helen Fundermann of Battle Creek, Iowa, and Tootie and Ed Lapko of North Edwards, Calif.; 37 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; along with numerous nieces and nephews, and many good friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Eldon "Bud" Putzier Jr. and David Putzier, a great-granddaughter, Natallie McNelly; and two brothers-in-law, Jim Livermore and John Fundermann.

DOROTHY A. MAHRT 81, of Anthon died Sunday, March 30, 2003, at Correctionville Nursing and Rehab Center in Correctionville, Iowa. Services were held Thursday, April 3, 2003 at the Church of Christ in Anthon, with the Rev. Ted Sieck officiating. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery. Dorothy Arlene Mahrt was born icon Aug. 12, 1921, near Anthon, the daughter of Leonard and Grace (Bryant Cobbs) Dicks. She lived her entire life in the Anthon area. As a young girl she liked to write songs and poetry and was very much a tomboy. She married icon John "Jack" Mahrt in 1940. They farmed in the Danbury, Iowa, and Anthon area until 1962, when they moved into Anthon. She worked for several years at Willow Dale Nursing Home in Battle Creek, Iowa. She was a very active member of Church of Christ, where she taught Bible school. Her belief in the Lord stood by her through her whole life. She loved to bowl and was in leagues in various towns until her health caused her to quit, but she never stopped wanting to bowl again. She also enjoyed riding horses and playing the piano, especially hymns. She was ahead of her time as she taught both of her daughters that they could do anything a boy could do. She also continued this thought with her granddaughters. She is survived by a son and his wife, DougDorothy A. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today, with the family present after 6 p.m., at Armstrong Funeral Home in Anthon. She was preceded in death by a son, Gerald Mahrt; her parents, one brother, and two sisters.

LOREN BAINBRIDGE 77, of Smithland died Wednesday, March 5, 2003, at a Sioux City hospital. Services will be 1 p.m. Monday March 10, at Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton, with the Revs. LeRoy Struble and Kent West officiating. Burial will be in Little Sioux Township Cemetery, Smithland. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Sunday, with a prayer service at 6 p.m., at the funeral home. Loren Bainbridge was born icon July 3, 1925, at Oto, Iowa, the son of Joseph and Ruth (Plummer) Bainbridge. He grew up in the Oto area and attended Oto High School. On June 30, 1944, he was united in marriage to Ida Maxine Brown in Dakota City. His life's work was as a heavy equipment operator and foreman for 35 years with Irving F. Jensen. His passion was his farm in Smithland, where he had been a resident since 1945. Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Ida; five children, Gaylyn and her husband, Don Beckner of Des Moines, Cecil W. Bainbridge of Smithland, Rhonda and her husband, Jack Sandy of Atlanta, Ga., Marla and her husband, Rick Allen of North Sioux City, and Marlin Bainbridge and his wife, Patty of Denver, Colo.; seven grandchildren, Ron, Dawn, Toni, Shelly, Tracy, Deidra and Amanda; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a grandson, Aaron Bainbridge in 1992. Loren was a very good husband to Ida and father to his children. He will be missed by many, many friends.

JOHN "EARL" PIERCE, 87, of Oto died Thursday, Feb. 13, 2003, at a Sioux City hospital. Services were held on Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2003 at Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton, Iowa, with the Rev. Karen Handke officiating. Burial was in Westfork Township Cemetery in Climbing Hill, Iowa. John "Earl" Pierce was born icon Nov. 25, 1915 in rural Woodbury County, the son of John C. and Jennie V. (Coon) Pierce. He graduated from Oto Public High School in 1933. On Dec. 16, 1937, he married icon Genevieve E. Kirkpatrick in Elk Point, S.D. Earl started his own livestock trucking business shortly after graduating from high school. He and his wife owned and operated Pierce Trucking Service for 52 years before retiring in 1985. He was one of the first recipients of the Pioneer Trucking Award. Earl was a member of the Oto United Church of Christ, the A.A.R.P., a former member of the Oto Public School Board, the Anthon-Oto Community School Board, the Oto Fire Department and the Iowa Better Trucking Bureau. He enjoyed baseball, basketball, dancing, dogs and county fairs. After retiring, he and his wife were involved in many Senior Citizen activities. Survivors include Genevieve, his wife of 67 years; a son, Larry of Sioux City; a sister and her husband, Wanda and Clifton Weber of Cushing, Iowa; a favorite cousin and his wife, Cliff and Lucille Coon of Sioux City; numerous other cousins, nieces and nephews; along with a host of friends and old truckers.

JACOB "JAKE" HUFFMAN, 23, of Anthon died Thursday, Feb. 6, 2003, of injuries suffered in an automobile accident north of Anthon. Services were held on Monday February 10, 2003 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Anthon. Burial was in St. Joseph's Cemetery.
Jake was born icon Aug. 24, 1979, in Kenosha, Wis. He moved to the Anthon area at the age of 4, where he attended Woodbury Central School. Later, he went to Anthon-Oto School and then River Valley High School, where he graduated in 1998. In August of 2001 he married icon Niki Rensink. He was employed with Dixon Construction in Correctionville, Iowa since his graduation from high school. Jake loved to fish, hunt, play pool and golf. He was an Iowa State fan and loved to be with his many friends. Survivors include his wife, Niki; his parents, Stan and Kerry (Cavanaugh)Huffman of Correctionville; a sister and her husband, Kate and Greg Schrage of Lenexa, Kan.; a brother, Steve at home; his grandparents, Bob and Florine Huffman of Anthon, and Ellen Cavanaugh of Sioux City; many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends who will miss him dearly. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Leonard "Doc" Cavanaugh; and an uncle, Dan Cavanaugh.

FLORENCE DREA 100, of Oto died Saturday, Feb. 1, 2003, at her residence following a six-month illness. Services were held on Wed. Feb. 5 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Oto. Burial was in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. Florence Cerena Sengleman was born icon on a farm near Battle Creek, Iowa to Henry and Cecelia (Johnson) Sengleman on Sept. 23, 1902. She was the youngest of seven children. She graduated from Battle Creek HIgh School and attended Normal School and taught in the Garfield Township School near Battle Creek as well as in the surrounding area. On September 24, 1927 she married icon Matthew Drea in Ida Grove, Iowa. They farmed near Danbury before moving to a farm near Oto, Iowa where they made their home until Matthew's death in 1961. Florence remained on the farm until moving to town in 2000. Florence was a 4-H leader, enjoyed attending her children's school events and enjoyed being a busy farm wife. She was an active member of St. Mary's Catholic Church at Oto, St. Mary's Altar Society and Catholic Daughters of American. She was a former Grand REgent of the Catholic Daughters of America and a former member of the Mesa, AZ and Sioux City Women's Clubs.
Survivors include a son and his wife Michael "Mick" and Donna Drea of Sergeant Bluff; two daughters, Geraldine Meylor of Oto, and Janice and her husband, Lee West of Barnsdahl, OK; nine grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, grandsons, Patrick Farber, in infancy and Maurey Drea; and a son-in-law, Kenneth Volk.

KENNETH G OREGON 76, of Salix died Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2003, at a Sioux City hospital. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Mapleton, Iowa, with the Rev. Mark Duchaine officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the 185th Iowa Air National Guard Unit. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton. Kenneth Guy Oregon was born icon Sept. 19, 1926, in rural Oto, Iowa, the son of Phillip and Opel (Green) Oregon. He grew up in the area and graduated from Oto High School. He then served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II with the occupation forces in Japan. On Feb. 14, 1952, Ken was united in marriage to Ruth Koenigs at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Mapleton. He farmed with his father for a time and then started working at Koenigs' Furniture and Appliance in Mapleton and later at Little Joe's TV and Appliance for a total of 30 years. After having endured a heart attack, he began work as a janitor at Maple Valley High School in Mapleton, where he worked for 10 years before retiring. The couple moved to Salix in 1992. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and a past member of the Knights of Columbus. He served his community on the Mapleton Volunteer Fire Department for 20 years. He was also a member of the Mapleton Community Club and American Legion Loren Hollister Post 496 of Mapleton. Ken was a man who loved the outdoors and the time he could find to go fishing, but the time he spent with little kids and his family brought him the greatest pleasure. Those survivors left to cherish Ken's memory include Ruth, his wife of 50 years; a daughter and her husband, Karen and Greg Trucke of Bronson, Iowa; two sons, Phil Oregon and his wife, Kira of Oto, and Pat Oregon of Luton, Iowa; eight grandchildren; a great-grandchild; a sister and her husband, Louise and Gary Crouch of Windsor, Colo.; along with several other relatives, neighbors and numerous friends. Ken was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Darrell and Ken's twin brother, Keith.

KAREN KAY (SHEVER) DUNCAN 62, of Spencer, Iowa died Sunday, Jan. 12, 2003, at her residence. Funeral services were held on Friday, January 17, 2003 at the Warner Chapel in Spencer, with Allen Lindholt officiating. The family is making private plans for disposition of the cremains. Arrangements were under the direction of Warner Funeral Home in Spencer. Karen Kay was born icon on June 21, 1940 in Clay County, Iowa to Kenneth and Alice (Ginger) Shever. She graduated from Anthon High School with the class of 1958. She attended the Methodist Church in Anthon and was active in 4-H while growing up. She was married icon in December of 1959, and made her home in Spencer, where she was employed at the North "Y" Cafe. Throughout her marriage, she lived in various communities. She spent most of her life in Aurora, Minnesota where she raised her family. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Aurora. She moved back to Spencer in the summer of 1992. She had been the manager at Subway for the past five years. She is survived by three daughters, Sally and her husband, Pat Lindholt, of Paola, Kan., Linda Pond of San Angelo, Texas, and Vikki and her husband, Greg Weigum, of Wellington, Mo.; her 12 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two sisters and their husbands, Kathryn and Chris Sands of Schleswig, Iowa, and Lois and Chuck Farber of Woodbine, Iowa; a brother and his wife, Raymond and Arlene Shever of Hampton, Iowa; and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents. Memorials may be directed to Survivors of Homicide, 100 First St. S.W., Suite 200, Cedar Rapids, Iowa 52404.

EVA E. KARHOFF 94, of Anthon, passed away on Sunday January 12, 2003. Funeral services were held Thursday, January 16, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Anthon, with the Rev. William Schreiber officiating. Burial was in Mount St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. There was a Catholic Daughters of America rosary, a vigil wake service and an American Legion Auxiliary service, all on Wednesday, January 15, 2003 at Armstrong Funeral Home in Anthon. Eva Edith Karhoff was born icon March 13, 1908, in Lake City, Iowa, the daughter of James K. and Katherine (Redenius) Sharkey. She moved with her family to Danbury, where she grew up and received her education. She became the bride of Bernard Karhoff, on April 25, 1927 at Danbury, Iowa. They farmed near Anthon from 1936 until Bernard's death on December 16, 1954. Eva moved into town in 1965 and worked as a cook and a janitor at the A-O School and as a cook at different restaurants in Anthon. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Catholic Daughters of America and the Altar Society. She was a long time member of the American Legion Auxiliary McNiff Unit 389 of Anthon, and several card clubs. She was an accomplished seamstress and did a great deal of sewing and enjoyed making crafts. She also enjoyed playing bingo but was especially happy when she could baby-sit her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who lovingly called her "Grandma Great." Those survivors left to cherish her memory include a son and his wife, Bob and LaVonne Karhoff of Pocahontas, Iowa; two daughters, Marian and her husband, Albert Sevening and Katherine "Dottie" Maguire, all of Anthon; 10 grandchildren, Mike Karhoff and his wife, Rose of Pocahontas, Kevin Karhoff and his wife, Jean of Omaha, Jeff Karhoff and his wife, Shirley of Milwaukee, Wis., Pat Maguire and his wife, Freda of Anthon, Tim Maguire and his wife, Michele of Bloomington, Minn., Becky and her husband, Jim Venteicher of Anthon, Kate Maguire Stessman of Omaha, Polly and her husband, Allan Pithan of Anthon, Faye and her husband, Bryan Hill of Anthon, and Sue and her husband, Tom Lewis of Estherville, Iowa; 21 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Pauline Newman, who resides at Correctionville Nursing and Rehab Center in Correctionville, Iowa, and Rose and her husband, Frank Franzkowiak of Ida Grove, Iowa, along with several friends and neighbors within the Anthon community. She was preceded in death by her husband Bernard, her parents; a son-in-law, Leo Maguire; a grandson-in-law, Jim Stessman; and five brothers and three sisters.

WILLIAM HEINSE JR 81, of Anthon died Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2003, at Maple Heights Nursing Home in Mapleton, Iowa, following a lengthy battle with cancer. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Midway, rural Battle Creek, Iowa, with the Rev. Thomas Sabel officiating. Burial will be in St. Paul Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Friday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. Friday evening, at Armstrong Funeral Home in Anthon. William Paul Heinse Jr. was born icon June 1, 1921, on the home place at Midway, rural Battle Creek, the son of William and Carrie (Hanson) Heinse Sr. On Dec. 17, 1941, he was united in marriage to Wilma Lee in South Sioux City. The couple moved to a farm near Anthon, where they farmed until 1973, when they moved into Anthon. He was a lifetime member of St. Paul Lutheran Church at Midway, where he was baptized and confirmed. Those left to cherish his memory include his wife Wilma, of 61 years; a son and his wife, Kevin and Martee Heinse of Anthon; two brothers and their wives, Fred and Jeanette Heinse of Anthon and Ed and Lucille Heinse of rural Anthon; two sisters, Frieda Mickelsen of Anthon and Bertha King of Florida; four grandchildren, Terrance, JoLynn, Nikki and Justus; two great-grandchildren, Tyler and Alexis; and many good friends and neighbors. He was preceded in death by his parents.
